Nick Nafahran, of Vehicle Repairs UK in Leeds, was interested in a Tecalemit tyre changer and said: “I’ve got to see it and got all the information that I need, so it’s been useful.”

“I’ve only got a little garage and I’m usually in the workshop until late but I’m glad I made the time for this – free food and drink too, so what’s not to like?” Customers are advised to look out for more events in 2019.

MOT technicians can pass potentially 'dangerous' vehicles with current coil spring regulations, Lesjöfors says MOT inspection rules changed in 2018, giving additional guidance for the testing of suspension components, including coil springs, but regulations are still too vague, the springs “The new guidelines finally manufacturer has said include ‘unsafe modification’ of a coil spring as a potential reason for rejection/failure, but still allow welded repairs in certain circumstances, despite the fact that introducing heat to a coil spring can pose a significant safety risk.

Despite some improvements, MOT regulations on coil springs are still too vague and give testers the opportunity to pass a potentially dangerous spring, Lesjöfors has said. In a statement, Lesjöfors said that the wording in the current regulations could cause confusion. They said: "These guidelines give MOT testers a lot of leeway to pass a spring which may in fact be dangerous, as words like ‘insecurely’ and ‘seriously’ are not defined.

“Once the heat-treatment process is complete, introducing extreme temperatures via welding will alter the internal structure of the spring, significantly increasing the risk of breakage.”

BRANDS LATEST POLYBUSH

Barking up the right tree: canine encounter inspired suspension bushes five times more durable than rubber What does a dog called Suba have to do with polyurethane suspension bushes? Polybush explains how its products save the automotive industry and the NHS money Polybush has claimed that its polyurethane suspension bushes have the ability to last up to five times as long as rubber alternatives, reflecting on the humourous beginnings the brand had to inspire its products. The company started at a Wrexham factory where Suba picked up a piece of polyurethane elastomer and her owner, Roy, noticed that the elastomer was completely untarnished and free of bite marks: this triggered a series of events.

“An example of a huge cost saving is a bush that was designed for the ambulance market. “The bushes were suffering premature wear due to their intense usage, but the parts required were not available separately meaning a full ARB and spring replacement was needed on a regular basis. “Polybush was able to design a bush that solved the problem of premature wear, fitted perfectly into the current ARBs, and saved the NHS £700 in parts costs.”

GSF Southend officially opens with more set to follow New branch manager Mark Woolley-Goodson explains how the culture within The Parts Alliance has ensured a seamless and successful start to branch life GSF Southend is now open and the Essex-based branch is delighted with how business has started, thanks in no small part to the national strength of The Parts Alliance and the support it has provided. Mark, who joined The Parts Alliance when the branch opened in January 2019, focused on his team quickly developing strong customer relationships. He said: "We needed to go and see our potential customers and educate them on the brand.

“Since then, we've found a pricing structure that provides the OE (original equipment) products customers want at prices that are competitive with aftermarket parts supplied by rivals. “People have been choosing OE with GSF for its parts range and availability, and that's something I've immediately noticed being a part of The Parts Alliance.” The work ethic and culture of the group to deliver what branches want and need, as well as training, has surprised Mark, and it's exactly what GSF Southend needed to hit the ground running. He noted: “I can't fault The Parts Alliance. “The way in which they approach and engage with you is really positive and completely different from anything I've ever worked in. “They're moving on very quickly and I think they can be the best in the country.”

The new branch already calls upon 12 members of full-time and agency staff and utilises four vans, in a mixture of sales, driving and warehouse roles.

BRANCH FOCUS

GSF Banbury: The Branch of the Year The inaugural winner of the Branch of the Year Award at The Parts Alliance explains the secret to their success and how their processes are helping staff serve customers better It's official: GSF Banbury is The Parts Alliance Branch of the Year; but, with national recognition from the trading group, how do you create a successful branch and deliver those high levels of service? As branch manager Max Stubbs explains, sometimes simplicity can be key. Being an award winner, you might think there is a recipe for success that is needed to be named as the number one branch within The Parts Alliance, but consistency has been one of the key methods of generating success.

Branch manager Max explains: “We just stuck to our standard internal processes laid out by GSF and The Parts Alliance. “Things can go wrong very quickly if you deviate from what you should be doing, and this has a knock-on effect on other areas of the branch.”

He continued: “Being proactive and not waiting for business to come to you - it won't. “Also building customer relationships, most of our top customers would consider us more than just a supplier, we are someone on the end of the phone that will go the extra mile for them.”

37

BRANCH FOCUS Making time for staff to better themselves is at the core of his work in the branch, and no shortage of careful employee management has been key to the recent award win.

He says: “I will always spare some time with my staff to help better themselves, if I can. “We also have an onlinebased learning platform where all members of staff can log in and progress through all manner of different courses, which is ideal for career progression.” This has all helped GSF Banbury win the first ever Branch of the Year Award from The Parts Alliance, but it could not have come as more of a surprise to Max.

“I had no idea there were even going to be awards, and even then, that we’d be up for it,” he remarks. “Knowing that what we’re doing is valued goes a long way; everyone gets on and works for each other and goes the extra mile.”

If GSF Banbury's phenomenal year could be summarised by one key element, Max is clear in his answer.

“Communicating with customers,” he maintains. “Whether it be good or bad news, or just a catch-up chat, keeping in contact is key to building and maintaining a good relationship.” Having those relationships is taking GSF Banbury to new heights, but technology is becoming increasingly important to a successful branch, and Max does not underestimate this.

“The support and resources you have within The Parts Alliance is huge, and to have the ability to go down avenues we haven't been able to before is fantastic. “It just means we can offer so much more to our customers,” Max concludes.

SCMF Croydon: Succeeding as the new kid on the block SCMF Croydon has flourished during the last year, winning the New Branch of the Year Award but, as branch manager Bill Barrett explains, a different approach to customer service has been key to their branch success

“I believe in giving clear expectations to my team and giving them the support to achieve them. “Always having a clear development plan in place to support sales growth. “Regular meetings to review performance in all areas help to make sure we are achieving all KPIs.”

“I spend no time in my office; 90 per cent of my time either with supporting the sales team, supporting the warehouse or visiting customers. “I like to remain visible and active, which I feel is proactive - and to make sure we have the right people in the right places,” Bill confirms.

39

BRANCH FOCUS Winning the award has proved pleasing recognition for SCMF Croydon.

“We were shocked and hugely appreciative to win. “It's nice to have the recognition of our blood, sweat and tears that have gone into getting the branch to where it is and we’re proud of where we’ve come in a year.”

Bill also maintains a keen focus on staff training, encouraging multi-skilling staff to have flexibility to cover absences.

“Being part of The Parts Alliance really does embrace local service with national strength. “Through trading as SC Motor Factors or Allparts, for instance, it makes you relevant in the area whilst being able to have the same offering that the trade has grown to expect.” Branch-specific initiatives can maintain customers, but The Alliance's national activity has invaluable too.

Vehicle filters - what garages and factors need to know to adapt to changing technology Latest trends and practices for correct air, cabin and oil filter replacement and maintenance are examined, and industry routines need to change, MAHLE says. “Fitting cabin filters is increasingly complex, and garages can spend a lot of time having to remove other components to ensure a correct fit.” “There is a greater demand for quality, especially from motor factors, and this is impacting on garages.”
