RECREATION
Lake Winnebago is the largest freshwater lake in Wisconsin. Year round, it is one of the more heavily fished state lakes and considered as one of the nation’s top walleye fisheries. FAST FACTS: • 137,708 acres with 88 miles of shoreline • 15.5 ft. - average depth, 21 ft. maximum depth • Fish species: Black Crappie, Bluegill, Burbot, Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Freshwater Drum, Lake Sturgeon, Largemouth Bass, Muskie, Northern Pike, Saugeye, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, White Bass • Approximately 30 miles long by 10 miles wide • Ice fishing is very popular and it’s not uncommon to view 10,000 cars parked on the lake during the frigid months. • The annual spearing hunt for the bottom dwelling, prehistoric sturgeon fish begins in February. • Fond du Lac County is home to 42 lakes plus numerous rivers and trout streams to lure the anglers. • Opening day for Wisconsin fishing is traditionally the first Saturday in May. Hook and line fishing for many species of fish on many Wisconsin waters begins the first Saturday in May. • Free Fishing Weekend is always the first full Saturday and Sunday in June. Fond du Lac is in the “elite” Area 2 turkey hunting zone of southeastern Wisconsin and a hunter’s paradise featuring a variety of landscapes form the Niagara Escarpment, the “kettles”, straight farmland and marsh areas. There is no doubt a healthy share of the state’s wild turkey population of over 320,000 Eastern turkeys. Public hunting in state recreational areas managed by the Habitat Restoration Area, Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit, Brandon Marsh, Eldorado Marsh Wildlife Area and parts of Mullet Creek Wildlife Area.
