HOW GANN IS SHAPING A NEW GENERATION OF LEARNERS The Internet. Twitter. Facebook. A constantly shifting socio-political landscape: this is the world in which Gann students are coming of age. In a society characterized by rapid change, how can we prepare a new generation to succeed and lead while remaining true to core Jewish values?

These days, “21st century learning” is a popular catchphrase in education. It refers to a broad set of skills—critical thinking, collaboration, digital literacy, problem-solving, flexibility and resilience—all vital to thriving in a dynamic, changing environment. This approach to learning has been the cornerstone of our educational philosophy at Gann Academy since day one. At Gann these skills are taught as part of the moral and ethical grounding that is deeply rooted in Jewish values. We encourage students to investigate, ask questions and test assumptions, not only while they are inside the school’s walls, but also throughout their lives. “What students are learning here goes far beyond intellectual skills and critical thinking,” says Jacob Pinnolis, the school’s Director of Teaching and Learning. “We’re teaching them to think about how to facilitate conversations, how to be flexible and how to consider the opinions of others, all through a Jewish ethical lens.”

JACOB PINNOLIS Gann students have the opportunity to practice active listening, critical thinking and open questioning at Limud Clali, the school’s community learning time. Every week students are exposed to speakers who cover a wide spectrum of subjects. They’re encouraged not to rush to assumptions, but to ask thoughtful questions in order to understand the views expressed. “One of the byproducts of thinking about pluralism, as we do here at Gann, is that it pushes students to put themselves in another’s mind space,” says Pinnolis. “You don’t have to agree with that person. But before you criticize, you have to understand. Once you understand the other individual’s position, the ground is leveled for respectful debate. Pluralism teaches that there is value in the difference. We listen to and respect each other.” When West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran Paul Chappell spoke last year about waging peace and ending war, he noted the probing questions students asked, saying it was one of the most engaged and thoughtful audiences he had ever addressed. The respect for others that we cultivate at Gann has infinite applications in the wider world. It informs how students respond to peers, how they process what they hear in the news, even what they post on a site like Facebook.

With new technologies posing an endless stream of ethical questions, Gann engages students in an ongoing social experiment to determine norms around the use of 21st century technology. We ask them: When is it okay to have a phone or tablet in front of you in a class or a meeting? What is an appropriate use of such a device that respects those around you—and what isn’t? This gives students a barometer to gauge each situation. “A Gann education is unique; it instills qualities rarely seen in most students,” says Pinnolis. “The values of Judaism are always going to help our students make better informed decisions. As the world becomes increasingly global, exposing more cultural, political and religious differences, the most effective individuals are going to be those who can bridge those differences. At Gann, we’re not merely preparing new generations of adults; we’re equipping future leaders with the 21stcentury skills they will need to be successful and ready for whatever changes may come.”

BENJAMIN COOPER, CLASS OF 2014

WHAT IS MY OWN INTERPRETATION? HOW GANN HAS HELPED ME FIND MY VOICE

MY EXTRAORDINARY SENIOR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

“Gann has helped me strengthen my Jewish identity and empowered me to embrace my independence.” When I was a freshman at Gann I found it difficult at first to grasp the variety of beliefs that exist within Judaism. As an Orthodox Jew, I was hesitant to raise my voice in classroom theological discussions because I wasn’t sure how others would regard my perspective. But in class after class, I listened to my peers—who define themselves as representing nearly every point along the Jewish spectrum—share their opinions and respond to each other in a deeply respectful way. I recognized that this is a safe space, and I soon found the confidence to share my own thoughts. Now that I’m a senior, I can really reflect on my experience and say how happy I am that Gann is pluralistic. If I hadn’t been exposed to so many other voices, opinions and sectors of Judaism, I wouldn’t have known how to have a discussion with people who believe different things. I have come to embrace those differences. The support from my peers and from the faculty has helped me mature and strengthen my identity as an Orthodox Jew, affirming for me that it’s okay to be different and empowering me to embrace my independence. Gann has also helped me change the way I think about my options and who I am. When I came here, I used to think, “How am I supposed to live my life? What rules am I supposed to abide by? Where is the law book?” But over these years, my teachers have encouraged me to learn and think for myself, and I now find myself asking, “What is my own interpretation? How do I look for the answers myself?” That line of thinking has changed the way I look at almost everything, and it has given me the confidence to ask questions and look deeper. In my humanities classes, when I read articles, I don’t take what the commentator says at

face value; I break down what that person is saying and look at how it contrasts with what another person has said and what I think. These are skills I am eager to put to use during a post-graduation gap year program, where I can engage in independent Gemara study. This will give me an opportunity to look deeply at Jewish texts, explore what different Talmudic commentators have said and discover my own interpretations. Gann has also inspired me to be curious and to follow my passions. I’ve always known I have an interest in biology, but when I had a chance to take a class last year, I fell in love with it. I found myself staying after class to have long discussions with my teacher, and she even encouraged me to apply for the Cure Program at Harvard University and the Dana Farber Cancer Center, which gives high school students handson cancer research experience in preparation for possible biomedical careers. I got in and had an incredible experience. I worked with a mentor who guided me in my research and enhanced my interest in biological research so much that I am now considering becoming pre-med. I feel so supported and so much a part of the community at Gann. I truly believe that life here revolves around the students, encouraging us in our academic goals and helping us become the adults we want to be. When I graduate, I’m comforted in knowing that our class will stay connected through the bonds we’ve developed over four years, and I’ll always be able to reach out to faculty for guidance, if and when I need it. The most important thing I’ve learned here at Gann is that if you’re interested in something, go ahead! It’s right there for you to explore.

Each year 12th grade students at Gann Academy participate in a senior capstone experience, known as Ma’avar. Ma’avar offers graduating students a framework to transition from high school to their early adult lives and allows them the freedom to spend time engaging in directed study projects or exploring their fields of professional interest through participation in guided internships.

At Children’s my time was divided between observing Dr. Orbach in the Interventional Radiology angio suite and helping to research and write a case report on a rare fetal abnormality. The research aspect of my internship was fascinating. I worked with a colleague of Dr. Orbach’s to review and summarize imaging reports, which were then translated into a paper. The study is ongoing, and when it’s complete, we are hoping the paper will be published in the Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery.

I had the great fortune of spending my Ma’avar internship “ It was a terrific experience having Benjamin here. He under the guidance of Darren Orbach, MD, PhD, a arrived early every day and showed impressive dedication, neurointerventional radiologist at Boston Children’s even coming in over Memorial Day weekend to work on Hospital. The opportunity to work with Dr. Orbach at his research project. His earnestness, commitment and Boston Children’s—a world-renowned physician at a world- enthusiasm impressed everyone in the Interventional renowned hospital—was my crowning achievement at Gann Radiology Division. ” Academy. And without the Gann connection—Dr. Orbach Darren Orbach, MD, PhD is the father of Nate (Class of 2017) and Gabi (Class of Neurointerventional Radiologist, Boston Children’s Hospital 2015) Orbach—it never would have happened. During the summer of 2013, I participated in a program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine that provided an overview of the primary medical disciplines. I wanted my Ma’avar experience to build on what I’d learned, so I could get deep exposure to the field of medicine. I am interested in both medicine and engineering, and because neurointerventional radiology is at the intersection of biomedical engineering and the practice of medicine, the opportunity was a dream come true.

My Ma’avar internship taught me so much about medicine, patient care, clinical research and the interworkings of a hospital; but what I learned at Gann prepared me to make the most of the experience. At Gann we were encouraged to ask questions as a way to deepen our understanding of a given problem or situation. I found that I was able to use those skills to build knowledge in a new and complex setting—I inquired, listened and dug deeper until I gained a working understanding of this highly specialized field.

Dr. Orbach’s practice is highly specialized because he works with pediatric patients. Shadowing him—and, ultimately, being able to understand what he was doing in each procedure and why—was an extraordinary learning opportunity. I was privileged to observe so many cases and, by the end, to be able to compare and relate similarities.

I am using the same skills to get the most from my college courses and am exploring the biological, physical and chemical sciences in order to make the most informed decision about which career path to choose. No matter which field I enter, I hope to use my Gann connections to find challenging and rewarding work in the future.

GANN ALUMNI NETWORK: A WINWIN FOR STUDENTS, GRADUATES, PARENTS AND FRIENDS Gann Academy is a place where students develop intellectually, personally and spiritually. We are now thrilled to have a tool that allows us to support them professionally. The newly-created Gann Alumni Network (GAN) supports our students’ professional development during their high school years and assists alumni with launching and building their careers. GAN is an online portal that contains job postings, internships and volunteer opportunities available to Gann alumni and current students. Postings come from alumni, alumni parents, parents of current students and community friends of the school, who can also indicate whether they are willing to serve as mentors or to talk with students and alumni who are curious about entering particular professional fields. By 2013 a Gann alumni network was an idea whose time had come, evidenced by discussions with several groups in the greater Gann community. “Gann is committed to the development of the whole individual,” says Ezra Samet, Class of ’01. “There should be some continuity between that supportive environment and a full stop after graduation.” Samet, who chaired the Board of Trustees’ Alumni Committee, conducted focus groups to explore how an alumni network could provide the most value. Professional development was the unanimous response. Informal networking has always happened at Gann, resulting in internships and even jobs. However, Samet wanted to develop a more systematic approach to connect Gann students and parents, alumni and their parents and friends of the school. Samet reached out to the extended Gann family to form an alumni working group that includes Gann parent and hightech entrepreneur Michael Rubin and Gann alumni parent

Catharyn Gildesgame, whose expertise is strategy and organizational development. The group quickly realized that the network needed an online home, and they asked Gann parent and MIT computer science professor Daniel Jackson to help them explore a technological solution. Jackson recommended one of his students, Andrew Song, to build a custom tool for GAN. In January 2014 the alumni working group launched the GAN at a professional roundtable and kick-off event. The highlight of the day was a series of roundtables, where Gann alumni who are college juniors, seniors and recent college graduates had the opportunity to sit with leaders in the fields of marketing, high-tech and law to network and ask probing questions about how to land their first jobs. “GAN benefits more than Gann students and graduates,” emphasizes Gildesgame. “When we—parents and alumni parents—have job postings in our organizations, we’re looking for bright, thoughtful candidates who can engage and contribute. Gann graduates fit the bill. The alumni network gives us first dibs on individuals with the skills to be effective and succeed. It’s a win-win.” “GAN is a milestone that shows how much the school has matured in less than two decades,” says Rubin. “It’s the classic virtuous circle. Graduates benefit from alumni and other friends’ connections, and, in turn, will help future graduates, all while engaging everyone in the Gann community. And it will expand exponentially as more alumni enter the job market and are, themselves, in the position to mentor and hire more recent graduates.” Gann Alumni Network: gan.gannacademy.org
