Design Power = Brand Power If you ask some random people, “What impress you the most about Gamania?” Most would answer, “Gamania’s logo design is very interesting!” In fact when one walks into the “turf” of Gamania, he/she will be visually impacted. Walking into the headquarter in Taipei, big blocks of fresh orange and white colors filled the space; the streamlined design makes it all the more spacious as if walking into a unique theme park. From the orange segment doorknob to the signs on the wall all were named after Gamania. Scents of orange flowed through and permeated the space. As a digital entertainment company, Gamania not only focuses on product operation, but also emphasizes on culture and creativity, hoping to influence all facets of Gamania through diversified designs. This is why Gamania always stands out with its unique creativity and culture and becomes the leading brand in the digital entertainment industry. So what’s Gamania’s view on design power? And how did it develop its unique design style, making it a brand full of irresistible charm? In this edition, G!Voice unveils the story behind the solid design power of Gamania.

Albert: Why Gamania must place great importance on Design? In this style-prevailing era, there goes without saying “ The Power of Design ” is important in its own right. To individuals, it is the fulfillment of life aesthetic, the key to selfidentity. To companies, it plays a key role in enhancing product value, establishing brand status and creating margin of profits. Under the fierce competition, I believe that the company that emphasizes on the design power and has its own style will always earn consumers ’ recognition and become the Chosen One in the industry. On the contrary, the company that brushes aside or ignores aesthetic will gradually be forgotten and shoved into oblivion.

04

In today’s market, if you want to establish a secure niche, in addition to diversify and accentuate product features, creating a brand image is exceedingly crucial. However, such image cannot be created by substantial amount of money or cheap labor, it must relies on the intensified usage of design. For Gamania, whether to kick up a notch in its competitive edge globally or to widen the gap between itself and other brands, “Design” is definitely a pivotal area to work on. Gamania aims to “ become the leading brand in global digital entertainment” which is why design is of great importance. I believe every Gamanian can feel the considerable

GAMANIA

Features Brand Title The title of a brand is not only the essential basis of brand asset but also the most lasting aspect of brand identification. Brand title can at least be divided into two aspects, one is the direct meaning the title defines, the other is the “combined meaning” including all kinds of association and relevant imagery. “Game+Mania=Gamania” prides itself as a game fanatic which is the most important symbolic meaning of the company.

Corporate Culture Determines Design Style Each brand is custom made for one particular company. If you observe Gamania, you will come to realize that the brand conveys a sense of fun and passion. Through the title of the company, logo, visual image, music and slogans, you will have a better understanding of how Gamania stands out and attracts most attention among all others. The trick does not solely lie in designs, it’s the spirit and culture that the designs represent.

Gamania Logo A company’s logo represents the style and culture of the company. Therefore, a good logo design must possess of 4 attributes: simple, easy to remember, cogent and multi-functional and at the meantime conveys the brand ’ s unique value and ideal with precision. Gamania’s logo image was originally adopted and transformed from an orange. It aims to convey the characters of Gamania: sharing, willing to take up a challenge and merry-making. Judging from its visual functionality, it is definitely a well-rounded design.

Orange Definition If anyone asks what is the Gamania style? The direct association is most likely to be the passionate and vibrant “ Orange ” color. Why orange? In addition to the title of the brand, colors also represent symbolic meanings. Orange gives one the feeling of “energy” and conveys the passion of “desire to experience.”

Music Identification In terms of overall visual design, many companies only focus on the planning of visual image. In fact, the music identification also plays an important role in the shaping of company image because sound can bridge over sight and mind. With the element of music, Gamania’s integral brand image is complete. Through collaboration with heavy-weight band like Machi, Gamania launched its theme song “Gama Song” that is passionate, fun and with depth. On the CD cover, the visual design stemmed from the idea of “Party.” Gamania wants people to gather from all places to celebrate and have fun. As for the circle label on the disk, Gamania especially invited the visual designer of Machi to do the honor. When you look closely, you may find that there ’s an imprinted Chinese character, “Longevity” which can only be found in major Chinese festivities.

Visual Identification At the end of every Gamania TV commercial, you may find there’s a little twirling orange segment that lasted few seconds. This is the unique visual identification of Gamania. The little orange segment ’ s animated movements and cute sound bites also speak to the players about the image Gamania is trying to create. This short clip of animation was created by Chun-Chien Lien, former art director of Imaginary Forces, Los Angeles and current visual designer of Dottodot. In fact, many people fell in love with Gamania because of the lively performance delivered by this cute little orange segment.

With the meaning of a flight deck in its Chinese title, this meeting room was designed by rising designer, Kong Chu who won IF/Red Dot Award in 2008. Generally speaking, flight deck usually refers to the surface of an aircraft carrier from which its planes take off and land. Heads of respective Gamania branches usually fly all over the world, when they join together to have a meeting, it’s like a gathering on the flight deck, everyone waits for meeting conclusion and heads out to execute missions. In Zeppelin, Gamania’s flight deck, heads of branches will gather operational and R&D information every week to discuss matters of importance. It is an important space that drives the operation of GHQ.

From the main visual design and its title, we can see that it encourages Gamanians to think and speak out loud.

About Writer

Jo-Jo

Convener of Shuffle Alliance University Lecturer Jo-Jo has been an ACG fan for more than 35 years and has profound study on Otaku community. She dedicates herself to promoting Otaku spirit, as the leader of Shuffle Alliance, she helped launching books such as Animation Comic Game, Japanese Animation Case Studies and Animation Comics 2000.

I used to work in an advertisement company as AE. The workload you get there is always over the top, especially if you work in the creative department because even if the workload is reasonable, deadline always looms in. This poses as an enormous pressure that can easily squeeze dry creativity. Hence the creative department came up with an ultimate tip—reading extensive amount of past awarded ads to get inspired for new piece. Sometimes, when the time is pressing, they have to change the look of some awarded piece, copied its creative theme and created a similar “brother piece”. When I stayed in the Ad company long enough, I realized that this tip wasn ’ t exclusively invented by my company, almost

28

everyone in the business knows this technique. This ultimate tip has a very common name—homage. Later on, I shifted and worked in different fields and I realized that “homage” is truly the ultimate tip that permeates all walks of life: construction company builds a new building, game company designs a new game, R&D people design a new product or even scholars design new research topics, as long as you apply “homage”, all pressing situation can be resolved in no time. What is so fascinating and addictive about this tip is that people tend to become invincible after using it: boss will praise your good work, clients will like it, difficult tasks resolved in no time. So long as no one sees it through, you may

even get an award of your own—if you’re lucky. Hence, “homage” has become the ultimate technique among the design sector of all trades. What is tricky about “homage” is that it entraps a snare that lures the designers and then gives them hell. It is natural to want to look up to someone/something better than you, and then before you know it, you are copying, mocking even plagiarizing it. There is a fine line between paying homage and plagiarism. It is very easy to fall into that dreadful trap out of negligence. To maintain the real meaning of paying homage, avoiding falling into the abyss of plagiarism, the most important thing is to look at designs from a designer ’ s

perspective. A designer is merely a job title in a company, once you ’ re in this position, you automatically adopt the company ’ s core values. And then all you can see is the steps and elements in the work flow. You are eager to deconstruct any parts that you can learn from and then that becomes the crucial moment to whether you’d fall in that trap. When you label yourself as a designer, your thoughts will be out of sync with the consumers then you can’t really see or feel the thoughtful, considerate side of design. When you look at other creative works, bear in mind that you shouldn ’ t see it from a professional ’ s perspective. You should try to become a user

(consumer) and feel the good intention other designers are showing through their works. Don’t judge in a brainstorming session, instead, become an appreciator that resonates good ideas and motives. Be in sync with the original designer and fully comprehend the original intention of the design then it’s easier to follow the creative path of your predecessor and come up with a better, improved method and the best product. If you want to make your first steady step of design, you need to ensure what kind of step it will be instead of searching for the location you wish you step on. Don’t let design design you!

This is how you should manage your online community! About Writer

Mika

Internet marketing observer in Taiwan Mika has been working in the field of marketing for more than 10 years, managing from brand strategy, product concept to market launch. He cares about the traditional marketing models and also pays attentions to the changes of Web 2.0, Social Media, and etc… Blog:http://jabamay.blogspot.com/

Playing basketball is very similar to playing online games. It ’ s no fun to play alone! You have to gather a gang of people, find a common field, and destroy your enemies through collaboration. The difference between the two is that the former allows you to run and sweat on an actual basketball court and the latter let you travel freely in the virtual world, though dif ferent space contexts, the pleasure is all the same. Nike has done a great job in “gathering a gang of people and have fun” through the platform of Ballers Network. Ballers Network is an application of Facebook. You must have an account on Facebook to use this application. The purpose of such approach is to drag your friends on Facebook into such activity. The very first step of playing basketball is “ you ’ ve got to

30

have a game to play, ” which could mean “initiate a game” or “participate in existing game.” To initiate a ball game, you have to set up time, type of game, and level of play, using google map to find a court and select the type of run. After all the setup is done, you can start to rally teammates. Because the platform is connected to Facebook therefore it is easy to find or invite people in your ball game and all the messages will be shown on the walls. To join an existing ball game is also very simple. Use the search engine to find if there are any games around your designated spot by entering time, location, and type of game. The result will be shown on a map and you can just click to participate in the choice of yours. After you get into a ball game, the platform will then arrange

a career path for you. You can systematically progress from forming a team, joining the league competition and to participating in the world game. Everything is made so real! You need to have the team name/ Logo/players to form a team. You will also be assigned an exclusive homepage to record the game results of your team. To help the players to be familiar with the following schedule, those who have outstanding performances can be selected as the MVPs. All the tracks and records will be documented in your personal file which allows you to play a role of a competent “sports agent” and manages all the affairs. All you need to know to run a team has been integrated into one page. In addition, Ballers Network also launched an application for iPhone users. Feel like shooting

Ballers Network homepage

some shots when you are outside? Just pick up your mobile phone and click away! Don’t you find that the membership managing concept of Baller Network is applicable to that of the online games? The personal tracks, career path in the game and community experience sharing, isn ’ t it a wonderful community platform for online games as well? Imagine this platform. Each game is like a ball game and it is people centric (rather than game centric). It can document everything happens to you in the virtual world of Gamania. More importantly, the power of community which allows the platform to be more humanized (or attached). You can review your past or invite friends to visit and make comparisons. You can have friends in the virtual world just as you have friends on Facebook. One is the Avatarized

Scoreboard of the team

you and the one is the real you. This is even better than Ballers Network because there is the virtual community in the online game so it is more extensive. You can choose to reveal your true identity or only allow your Facebook friends to see who you are. In this platform, you can play different games with friends, assist one another or decide if you want to invite more friends to join you. In addition to the fun of playing games, you can also view the discussions among friends, exchange secret tricks or techniques, visit others’ strategy rooms and take a look at the trophies they exhibit. “Building a friendly platform to assist consumers to progress from beginner ’ s level to pros and allow the community to run its positive influence. ” Such idea may have face issues like

Career Path

privacy concerns or technological difficulties. The service mentioned above may long have existed yet it is not integrated on a “people” basis therefore scattering here and there in dif ferent game forums. Such problem became obstacles for marketers to have a comprehensive view of consumers therefore it is hard for them to predict the preference of the players. Baller Network has done a great job on both UI and circulation which can serve as a reference for future community management. The purpose of running a community is to make the players love the game even more and to combine the reality and virtual world together. So that you are not merely an account in the virtual world but an Avatar with flesh and blood that represents you.

Feature Report on TIC Office Decoration Contest Brand Center of GHQ was invited by TIC in December, 2009 to act as the judge committee for TIC Office Decoration Contest. During the evaluation, the committee felt that TIC not only knows how to operate products, but also actively seeking every opportunity to showcase their creativity. So how did TIC give their office space a makeover using creativity? Read on to find out!

32

Unceasing Creative Energy To create the “ homey ” feeling, TIC administration will host one office activity every quarter and Office Decoration Contest is among one of the most popular activities. In 2008, TIC hosted the first Office Decoration Contest. The rule was to decorate any useable walls in the company. Each department adopted a wall and unleashed their creativity on it. The result was quite remarkable. (For exclusive feature article and pictures, please see G!Voice Vol.09) The creative energy among TIC colleagues remained strong. In 2009, TIC continued the same theme but changed the decoration object to the supervisor ’s room. Colleagues were divided into 4 teams based on their seating. Team members must collaborate and choose a theme to decorate the supervisor’s room that is closest to them. To encourage

people to brainstorm, the decorate budget for each team was set at NT1000. This was a test to see which team can come up with the best result with the least cost and in the most environmental way. The criteria for the contest winner were creativity and intension. The themes for these four teams were “ Mediterranean Restroom Style ” , “ Pop Art Style Cabinet ” , “ ROOM78 Nightclub Style ” and “ Merry Christmas Style. ” The winner for this challenge was “ROOM78 Nightclub Style” winning NT8000 with them (which they spent it all by treating the whole company to a feast); the runner-up was “ Mediterranean Restroom Style ” that impressed the judge with their delicate handcrafts and creativity and was awarded with NT3000.

Photography Show “See you— On the Mountain Top” See Gamanians Determination towards Dreams A good photography show is determined by the style and reputation of the photographer and the meaning it represents. G!Voice reckons the photography show hosted by SPACE 17 belongs to the latter. Each photo realistically documented the invaluable process of hard work and the relentlessly pursuit of dreams, far beyond styles.

36

This photography show was not merely comprised of photos taken by a bunch of people who love mountain climbing and photography. What the show was really about is Gamanians ’ determination towards dreams and promises kept for their partners — though working in different locations, they all pour in time and efforts towards achieving the same dream. Albert led 36 “summit-mounting Gamanians” that split up into two teams, heading from separate locations with the same goal of reaching the peak of Snow Mountain. “See you on the mountain top” thus became the most important slogan and the title of this photography show. There were a total of 95 photos displayed in this show along with the exhibit of some essential equipments (ranging from 15- 25kg) so the viewers can try to imagine the laborious process of this journey. Of course, it’s bound to see some creativity in the decoration of the show. Just like those “one-step-at-a-time” footprints you see when you enter gama-island, what it really says is that “As long as you persist to move on one step at a time, you will eventually reach the goal.” The show lasted about a month, attracting both Gamanians and local people. It is praised to be one of the most “ GamaniaSpirited” shows SPACE 17 has ever hosted.
