t seems an appropriately themed month to be writing my last edito for the Guernsey edition. Creating a magazine requires constant renewal and refreshing. With our next edition comes a fresh approach as I pass the baton to a new editor, Claud De La Mare. An experienced local writer, she brings with her tenacity and a depth of local knowledge that I know is going to further improve Gallery. I look forward to watching the magazine get better and better over the coming months under her guidance.

I’ve had a great time working with our team in Guernsey. I’ve met some great new people, and experienced fresh new things, from the air on the cliff paths as I’ve trekked out of St Peter Port past the aquarium to the fresh mint of Red’s mojitos or fish of Hook’s sushi. I’ve come to love the cobbles as if they were my own and I don’t feel too much like a tourist when I’ve having gâche for breakfast at Dix Neuf. I’ll definitely still be visiting regularly.

The festival usually includes dancing and bonfires to celebrate Saint Walburga who stood up against witchcraft and many people often dress up as witches. With spring just around the corner it’s time to get off the sofa, head outside and make the most of our beautiful island. Here at Gallery we can’t think of a better way of doing that than with a challenge that will not only help you get fit but raise money for some very worthy causes at the same time.

e asked one of Guernsey’s wellknown sportsmen Colin Fallaize what he recommends we should do in 2015. Having been around the fitness scene for a long time Colin understands what it takes to participate in a charity challenge from both a professional and personal point of view.

mind. Your attitude has to measure up to the size of this challenge. To do this you need to start by setting yourself a good training programme that is relevant to your fitness levels and has a definite progressive increase in distance, including one longer walk at least once a week.

The Saffery Champness Rotary Walk is one of the great charity challenges for you to consider this year. One of the island's largest charity fundraising events that’s supported dozens of charitable causes in its 17 year history, it takes walkers anything from seven and a half hours to 16.5 hours to complete the 39 mile course.

So why go faster? Well not only are you getting a great workout (and at the same time working off those unwanted pounds) but you will also get there faster. Believe me, when it comes to this charity walk you will be grateful for the less time spent on your feet. So how do you keep yourself motivated in training without getting bored or giving up?

If you are considering signing up to take part this year, my advice from the very outset however, is to respect this event. Walking 39 miles around Guernsey’s stunning, but unforgiving coastline is an extremely worthwhile challenge, but also a very serious one. For those of you brave enough to take it on, here are some tips and recommendations to adopt during your training. First of all you have to get into the right frame of

This is just a guide and should be altered according to your existing fitness levels but is a good starting point. The program requires you to monitor the way you feel and build up your intensity. You want to hit a pace that will get your heart into the "exercise zone" – where you're breathing harder but

Don’t always walk at the same pace. Varying your walking workouts will achieve the best training results. This may mean adding a walk of higher speed and intensity, such as a faster walk or one that incorporates more hills.

HERE ARE COLIN’S TIPS: •Vary your walks. Guernsey has some amazing coastal paths and country lanes and St Peter Port also offers a labyrinth of small streets and steps all of which can be fun to explore and a great way to get to know your island •Experience says that by tracking your workouts it helps you look back and see how much you’ve improved. Training logs generally help you do better, however detailed •Enjoy it – if you know you are not going to enjoy it, don't do it •Walking indoors is an option if the weather is bad and it’s good to get some advice on this from a trainer at your local gym. Treadmills won't help your body get used to pounding the cliff paths but they will get your heart and muscles in better shape •Encourage a friend to take up the challenge and train with you. Not only does walking with a friend make the workouts more fun but you're accountable to one another. If you don't feel like going for a walk, you can't bail out because you will also be letting somebody else down •Remember that you are walking for two causes - your health and for charity. You shouldn’t need any more motivation than that.

I would recommend you buy a wrist heart monitor (seek advice from a local professional for this who will work out what’s best for you); they are worn like a watch and give you the added incentive of tracking your target heart rate and calories burned. My sample training plan is fairly advanced so it is recommended that you discuss the detail of the walk and your training program with your GP beforehand and start training only when: •You have the correct equipment (clothing and footwear) •You’ve had a medical check up •You’ve planned your routes •You have a training log •You have the right attitude, towards yourself and who you are raising money for My parting message is that walking works. This comes through loud and clear from fitness experts, researchers and everyday fit people. It’s cheap and can help you lose excess weight and avoid the health problems that go along with it such as high blood pressure and high blood sugar. Studies have also linked moderate exercise to lower rates of stress and reduction of certain illnesses. It will take time to prepare for the challenge, but with the proper training most people can walk 39 miles in one day. Do as much as you can and do it consistently. Waitrose Games Makers mark 100 days to until the NatWest Island Games Last month, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the NatWest Island Games XVI, the Waitrose Games Makers have been busy preparing for the biggest sporting event of the year which will see 24 islands and around 3,000 athletes visit Jersey from 27 June to 4 July 2015. Organisers have been allocating roles to the 400 volunteers who will be giving up their time throughout the Games to make Jersey 2015 an unforgettable week of competition and participation With more than 20 different Games Maker roles the volunteers will focus on meeting and greeting visitors, spectator services, accreditation and administration, marshalling, media roles and attaché work. Games Makers will be based across the island, at all sports arenas and venues with a number based in the Games Village at Howard Davis Park. Waitrose Games Makers are also assisting with the school’s twinning project that sees every Jersey primary school twinned with one of the competing islands. The volunteers, who will be recognisable in their purple uniforms, are taking part in a training programme facilitated by WorldHost ahead of the events. WorldHost trained tens of thousands of volunteers and staff for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the local programme is run through Butterfly Training Limited.

Most people picture butterflies as beautiful creatures, however, others shudder at the thought of these insects. Are butterflies really as cute as we think? Here is a list of reasons that suggests otherwise:

For them, a trip to the dentist didn’t involve today’s whitening methods, but instead they had a different fashion trend. This involved inserting gem stones into people’s teeth. To do this, a hole would be drilled in the tooth using a hard tube that was spun between the hands of the dentists. The tube was the same size as the gem that would then be placed in the hole. A perfect fit! Maybe grillz aren’t as fresh as we thought!

“Finally, an opening. Can I make it? Yes, go for it!” Nepal, on a flying Bullet

I

pulled back on the throttle and the Bullet shot forward. Barely a second later, having advanced a few paltry metres onto the centre line of the Kathmandu Ring Road, the motor stuttered and stalled. It was at precisely this moment, with a myriad of heavy and light vehicles bearing down on me from either flank, that I wondered whether touring Nepal on a motorcycle was such a good idea! And yet, at one point or another, it had seemed like a good idea. After all, there is no better way of exploring any part of the world than by doing it the local way, which in this case, was on a Royal Enfield Bullet; the motorcycle of choice on

the Indian subcontinent with its classic styling, ergonomic riding position and the notorious “thump” of its 350cc single cylinder engine. This however was not the time to admire the bike. Needing to get to the relative safety of the other side of the road, the presence of a foldaway kick-starter in place of an ignition switch was inopportune for a rider who is accustomed to modern motorcycles. I had no other option but to push the heavy machine forward with all my might, while I was still straddling it. Although I made it, seldom, I hope, have I appeared so ungracious and pitiable! Sweating and experiencing heart palpitations, I re-grouped with Mr Gurung, the gentleman from whom I had rented the Bullet, ready to commence my Nepali riding lesson. Having had time to compose myself, I followed him through the continuous traffic jam that is characteristic

of any Asian city; lorries and buses three abreast in a single carriageway, cars and taxis trying to get through the gaps left by the lorries and buses, and moped riders sneaking through any opening that they could find! As I rode, I bore in mind the two pieces of advice that Mr Gurung had imparted at the outset; first, use the horn at every opportunity, and second, get out of the way of anything that is noisier, smellier and more metallic than you are! After he had bid me farewell, I cautiously skirted around Kathmandu before hitting the open road and heading eastward towards the mountain village and Everest viewpoint, Nagarkot. By the time I arrived in mid-afternoon, the mountain mist had rolled in and obscured the Mahalangur Range of the Himalayas in which Mount Everest is situated. I arose early the following morning to discover that while it may be the world’s highest peak, it is not easily discernible amongst the numerous other peaks and as such, I left Nagarkot unsure of whether I had seen it or not.

There followed a couple of days of intensive riding, interspersed with visits to the towns of Bhaktapur, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its temples, palaces and metal, wood and stone carvings, and Gorkha, the home of King Prithvi Narayan Shah who unified the independent states of Nepal in the Eighteenth Century and the region from which the Gurkha soldiers derived. My destination was Bandipur; devoid of the usual tourist trappings, its pedestrianised streets were reminiscent of a western set and were a welcome relief from the chaotic highways.

veranda where I sat and gazed upon the Himalayan peaks with the young lads who ran the establishment. Suitable refreshed, I returned to Bandipur and rode the bike to Pokhara, a town that is a popular base for trekkers of the Annapurna Mountain Range, with its shops selling knock-off North Face gear and booking offices aplenty. From one such office, I hired a trekking guide for a sum of money so measly that I was almost embarrassed to hand it over. His name was Bharat and he had studied accountancy

The day after my arrival, I walked for two hours through the hills to Ramkot, an indigenous village, accessible only by foot or mule, where women went about their daily chores on their doorsteps, men lounged around, chatting and smoking with each other and children climbed trees and played with the livestock and poultry. At the far end of the village was a small “hotel� consisting of three tiny rooms, an even smaller shop and an extremely welcoming Bharat getting into the biking mood

whilst on a working visa in Australia before returning to Nepal to participate in an arranged marriage at the request of his mother. He had met his wife-to-be for halfan-hour to ensure that they were compatible life-partners and had married her thirteen days later. While he told me that he found her to be agreeable, I wasn’t unduly surprised when he said that he preferred the days when he was trekking to those when he was at home with her! The aim of our trek was to reach the top of Poon Hill (yes, really!), which we achieved on the morning of the third day. We had left our hotel at 05:00 and joined the hoards of trekkers ascending the steep steps by torchlight to view the sunrise over some of the highest peaks on earth. The sun rose shortly after 06:00 to illuminate the mountainscape and reveal a halo of cloud above the peak of Annapurna, justifying the aching limbs and non-stop perspiration of the previous two days! As we descended the mountain, we passed several columns of mules that were carrying supplies to the trekking camps. On one particularly narrow stretch, I stepped aside to let the column pass but was caught by the corner of a metal frame attached to a mule’s saddle, and was thrust to the ground and trampled on by the startled animal. The likelihood of being run over in Nepal had been on mind throughout the preceding weeks. That it was to by at the hands (or should that be hooves?) of a humble mule came somewhat out left field but I reasoned that if it was to be my only accident, I was fortunate to have escaped with only mild bruising to my ribs and ego. I was also able to enjoy the irony that I had been knocked onto my behind by an animal that had descended from an ass. The saddle of the Bullet had been kinder to me and soon I was sat astride it riding towards Chitwan National Park near the Indian border. As I was approaching Sauraha, the gateway town to the National

Park, I took a wrong turn and as a result of a chain of coincidences, was invited to join a Canadian couple and their two Nepali guides on a motorcycle ride to a homestay within the jungle. I followed Bishnu, Chandra, Mat and Jess on a three-hour journey along bumpy, gravel-laden paths and through fast-flowing rivers to a small village that, as I found out when I arrived, was not connected to an electricity grid and had recently been relocated by the government after several of its inhabitants had been slaughtered in their sleep by a rampaging bull elephant named Ronaldo. This was not how I had envisaged my afternoon! Regardless of the facilities and the threat of annihilation, the welcome at the homestay was as warm as the healthy serving of Dal Bhat (the National dish) that we ate around the campfire. The continuous supply of Raksi, a home-distilled millet wine, soon took away any fear of what might be lurking in the shadows and encouraged Bishnu and Chandra to tell me of their love for the jungle. They said that while they could see the benefits of urban living, their “jungle minds” were not suited to it and they both delighted in returning to the habitat of their childhoods.

That said they came in quite useful when warding off a boisterous young elephant that, seemingly displeased with our presence, decided to charge at us. In escaping the elephant, we found ourselves in rhino territory and had to climb up a nearby tree to watch these giant, armoured animals grazing in the high grass. As the evening drew in, the setting sun over the plains of Chitwan marked the beginning of the end of my Nepali adventure. The following day I returned the Bullet safely to Kathmandu, completing a 1,000km round-trip. As I rode past the numerous tourist buses heading for the city, I reflected on how different the experience would have been without the bike. While the bus passenger is cooped up in a metal cage on a pre-determined route, the rider, with no barrier between himself and the environment, can explore the world at his own leisure and with all his senses. All he has to rely on is himself, his bike and his appetite for adventure. He has nothing more; but he wants nothing more.

As I had turned up unannounced, I had to sleep on a straw mattress in the attic of the homestay, with Bishnu, Chandra and a couple of chickens for company. Although an evening in a hotel might have been more comfortable, I reflected that this was certainly more memorable. The next day we rode along more gravel roads and through more rivers before returning to civilisation. The Bullet, which I had been warned was not to be ridden offroad or through water, had coped admirably with everything that had been thrown at it. When I finally arrived in Sauraha, I trekked with Chandra’s two sons, Ravi and Shankar, through the jungle and grasslands of the National Park with nothing more to GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

MEET THE ARTIST

CHRIS SIMCOX C ris is a graphic designer and artist based on the island. He studied at Staffordshire University, where he got a Degree in Fine Art and a Post Graduate Degree in Urban Design. Long with an interest in all things architectural, Chris’ interests have begun to drift toward public art and urban spaces. We speak to a man who may influence the way our island looks.

How do you describe your work?

I don’t have any great manifesto or remit so it’s just the pure pleasure and satisfaction I get from engaging with the act of creativity. My work over the years since my graduation has developed through an interest in combining colour, line and shape to create abstract landscapes revealing what maybe hidden and to strip back the multi-layered world that surrounds us. Leading me to become fascinated with mixing stone-cold minimalist shapes and architectural constructions with the playful use of colour, texture and line. Through this I’ve become interested in subverting the grandiose with the everyday detritus that surrounds us. I would like to take this forward by looking at urban street art, juxtaposing it with architectural spaces / structures to compose new spaces.

But I also have a love for the simple act of drawing - everything from illustrations of birds produced in simple black Biro pen to getting out and about with my camera and photographing what surrounds me. I would like to start combining large scale photography with created objects and spaces that would almost reflect back spaces I occupy.

Who or what inspires you?

There is always something new which catches my eye. ​S​pending many an hour looking on the internet​and​in magazines​ . ​But I do have a long list of artists and architects which I really enjoy looking at. But my first real inspiration and what encouraged me to study fine art was a trip to the Tate Modern in London must be around 2003 or later and seeing the artwork

“What intrigues me in Guernsey is how generations of artists have tried to capture the relationship the island has with the sea recording and documenting the ebb and flow of the tides during the different seasons and how it has been captured in a myriad of creative ways is a fascinating subject - one which I would ​relish​to​take on​one day”. of Cornelia Parker and her piece called 'Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View - I was amazed at how everyday objects could be used to create something visually engaging. But there was one other artwork on display that day by an artist called Anish Kapoor entitled 'Marsyas' - an incredible 150m long structure placed within the bowels of the Turbine Hall at the Tate - I had never seen an artwork produced at that scale and it opened my eyes up thinking about the relationships we have to space and architecture.

What could you not live without?

I​ would find it difficult n ​ ot to be able to create, draw or engage in creativity on a daily basis. I'm very lucky to be able to work as a Graphic Designer and to be able to enjoy using different software applications, giving a great base to use alongside my artwork.

Do you collect any art yourself?

​ ot really, but it's perhaps something which N I would enjoy doing in the future as long as it's priced right of course!

How did you become interested in drawing?

I​ have always been interested drawing from a young age. I remember a certain art teacher at Junior School 'Mrs Collinson' who encouraged and gave me confidence at school especially in art & design classes.

What factors are important to you when you work?

I​​ find it important to have a space from which to work in, whether it's a shed or a simple desk with some small wall space to put some inspiring artwork posters up. I have noticed it's interesting to have four or five things on the go at the same time and a little sketchbook to record ideas and work things out. I recently picked up an old sketchbook from about 10 years ago and noticed some great ideas started to scribble over a few old drawings. Having work around me and to hand I find helps push me along to spending a few hours a week after work and at weekends - although it's not always the case.

When you moved to Guernsey did your work differ in any way? I​ don't consider myself prolific enough to see a errant change in my work since coming to Guernsey. But I'm starting to think more about mapping and visualising various spaces and places in Guernsey whether it's an empty building or just a unique location, from which I can sketch out, creating temporary structures/public

artwork, even on a large scale which would never be realised almost Archigram - esque. Do you have a favourite piece you have created?

One of the most successful/favourite pieces of work I was lucky enough to be involved with was created for Architecture Week a national event now sadly defunct. The brief was create a structure/shelter which asks the question ‘How green is your space?’. The task started by engaging with a local youth group in a workshop format to brainstorm the different ideas on offer. After weeks of fun model making, drawing and general creative chaos - we all agreed it would be cool to make a dome like the ones we see at the Eden Project in the south of England. So it began with a little mathematical persuasion taking the classic Buckminster Fuller shape and creating a wooden kit version to be assembled on the day. But keeping in mind we wanted a certain level of engagement from the public we produced a number of panels to go into each section of the dome. This was to help the youth group produce artwork and evolve the structure as the day progressed. It was a fantastic day all round one which bought a smile to my face seeing the kids take full ownership and the pride they took from being involved in the creative process.

What advice would you give artists or designers that are starting out?

​ ever give up ​and always believe in your N own work and what you produce. Although I find the creative world can be a very fickle place sometimes, but you have to take the high and lows, use them to your own advantage and learn from them. Plus never throw artwork away as one day you may find it will evolve and morph into something great... I lost quite a few worthy pieces over the years I now regret losing.

Do you have any exhibitions coming up?

I haven't exhibited for a while now, but I will be involved in the Guernsey Arts Festival this year. Hopefully the start of many more to come in the future.

DRIP DRIP DROP... LITTLE EVIDENCE OF APRIL SHOWERS

C

hoosing a theme for April’s weather article wasn’t difficult, especially when I heard that this issue was to be entitled ‘Fresh’. Disney fans might be disappointed to discover that the ‘Bambi’ film is not where the expression ‘April showers’ originated.

The rhyme, ‘April showers bring May flowers’ has been in common use for donkeys’ years. A quick rummage through cyberspace revealed that it dates back to the mid 16th century; to a farmer/poet from Southeast England named Thomas Tusser (and he probably learnt it from his mum). If you pretend that you’ve never heard the rhyme before, and then read it with fresh eyes, you can see that it might not be telling us to expect showers in April at all! It might simply be telling us to cheer up and look at the bigger picture. However, the phrase is so well known now, that if we don’t have a particularly showery April, people see it as the perfect opportunity to grumble about weatherforecasters ( just to fill those awkward gaps in conversations). So let’s see if there actually is any correlation between April and showery weather in Guernsey? Oh dear, it would seem that there really isn’t very much at all... The 30-year average reveals that it’s actually the driest month outside of the May to August period.

First of all, let’s be clear about what we mean by ‘showers’. When I was growing up I didn’t know the difference between ‘rain’ and ‘showers’ and I thought it sounded ridiculous when forecasters said, “tomorrow will be rain or showers”. It was like saying “rabbits or bunnies”... Surely they’re just the same thing! But no; to meteorologists, the two terms have very different meanings. It’s more like the difference between rabbits and hares... two types of animal. Most people think of showers as rain that’s here one minute and gone the next. Well this is often correct, but showers sometimes fall as sleet, snow or hail; but for argument’s sake, let’s assume they are liquid for now. The reason showers are usually (not always) short-lived is because of the scale of the clouds that they fall from. These clouds can be extremely tall; frequently measuring 4 or 5 vertical miles. However, their horizontal areas are relatively small when compared with weather-fronts. The horizontal area of a shower-cloud might typically compare to that of Alderney, whilst the huge swathes of cloud associated with weather-fronts usually extend for hundreds of miles.

When meteorologists just say “rain”, they’re generally talking about the liquid that precipitates from weather fronts - the cloudy boundaries between entire air masses. (The more buoyant air mass slides over the other, generating massive regions of cloud). When meteorologists say “showers”, they’re talking about the precipitation that falls from numerous convective bubbles within an air mass (usually much briefer, but often much eavier than frontal rain).

A COUPLE OF DEFINITIONS CONVECTION - this occurs in fluids of all states, where the fluid is warmer and more buoyant at the bottom than it is at the top. The warm portion thus rises like a bubble. When the fluid in question is Earth’s atmosphere, its invisible water vapour content condenses into visible droplets as it rises and cools, forming clouds that are bubbly in appearance. Potentially becoming very tall; possibly delivering extremely localised violent weather. AIR MASSES - these are the country-sized (sometimes continent-sized) areas of roughly uniform air. By ‘roughly uniform’, I mean in terms of temperature, humidity and other more complex meteorological properties. They move around like plate tectonics but on a massively quicker timescale. Air masses take a few weeks to form over huge roughly uniform areas, such as desserts or oceans. Then they’re modified and subdivided as winds transport them around the globe.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Guernsey may find itself beneath several different air masses in a single day, or it might remain beneath the same one for about a week. The type of air mass required for April showers in Guernsey would be a very cold but moist one. It needs to be so cold that surrounding sea temperatures appear warm, but that’s a big ask in April, when sea temperatures have only just passed their annual minimum.

However, in late-autumn/early-winter, it’s a doddle. Looking at the 30-year averages for November and December, we find that our surrounding sea temperatures are about 4-5°C warmer than our average air temperatures. The perfect recipe for showers! Unsurprisingly, average monthly rainfall during those two months is more than double that of April. The reason we don’t name-drop ‘November showers’, is simply because there has never been a logical reason to rhyme it with flowers. So I might have just dispelled the April showers myth, but it’s still an undeniably ‘fresh’ month. Most of us will double our doses of fresh air. With temperatures regularly in the low-mid teens, islanders will expose a bit more flesh, and fresh doses of vitamin D will invigorate our wintry complexions. So, come May, flowers will be growing and people will be glowing!

Optimum Tide Mid, going down Best Feature All that sand makes Petit Bot a popular ‘bucket-and-spade’ location. Worst Feature At the height of summer, finding somewhere to park can be difficult. Description A gentle drive down through a leafy valley eventually brings you to Petit Bot, one of the island’s most popular beaches. You don’t have to spend all that much time here to understand why. A solitary Martello Tower stands watch over an expanse of sand that gradually opens up as the tide recedes. Boasting countless rock pools (and one cave) to explore, and wide open spaces ideal for sandcastles and ball games, Petit Bot can sometimes seem like a laboratory experiment aiming to create the perfect beach for small children. The South Coast cliffs that surround the bay form magnificent views in all directions and, in late August or September, also provide a modicum of shelter from the chilly autumnal winds should

summer slip away earlier than seems fair. This towering backdrop can be a problem, however, if you intend to do some evening sunbathing – even in June the sun will disappear by about 6pm. High tide might eradicate the sand, but swimming becomes even more enjoyable as the waters rise. For the more adventurous, it’s possible to swim around the western headland to another sandy beach, Portelet, which is to all intents and purposes inaccessible from the cliff path, and thus tends to be blissfully deserted. These twin beaches are popular locations for kayakers. On the west side of the beach is a large cave known as ‘Le Parloir de Monsieur Picot’ after Reverend Thomas Picot, a 17th-century minister. Monsieur Picot was a big fan of the cave, and liked to slip away there to meditate in peace. Hopefully he never meditated to the point of dozing off, or he would have got his robes wet as the tide came in. With convenient facilities, and food available from a kiosk beside the Martello Tower, you can more or less stay at Petit Bot all day if you want to. And you probably will.

WINTER IS NO EXCUSE TO SMELL BAD WORDS Grace Ryan

There are a great many downsides to British winter, ranging from the general (cold, darkness) to the specific (noisy radiators, mildew, trick or treating). Sometimes I get so annoyed at not seeing the sun on weekdays that I contemplate swallowing enough Herbal Kalms to put myself into a coma until April, brain damage be damned. I have at least been telling myself that I’ve experienced the full range of fresh misery that British winter has to offer until last week I was jolted out of my complacency by that rare marvel: a completely new, completely awful experience. I don’t know if it’s the deadening effect of all the gin, but I’ve somehow never realised that winter time makes people smell dreadful. The months of cold must trigger off a mental signal to eat raw onions and double

down on the cheap perfume, because I was sandwiched between commuters on a rush hour bus journey and after ten minutes with the windows inexplicably closed and heating on full blast it was like being in a cattle truck en route to a slaughterhouse sponsored by Lynx. I generally love Guernsey’s shiny new buses, but the people surrounding me had apparently pulled out all the stops to tempt me into a trip home riding shotgun on the sewage tanker.

Everybody smells like bums

Tip #1: Wash your body and your clothes properly

Even worse: as soon as I’d sobered up enough to notice, I realised that people everywhere smell bad. Wealthy people stink. Beautiful people stink. Cute little babies in their prams stink. Incubating beneath those bulky winter clothes is a choking fog of fart gas and armpit odour, and if it isn’t body smells it’s beauty products that evoke something you’d use to mop the floors of a maximum security prison. I, on the other hand, smell lovely at all times (i.e. of gin), which is why in the interests of public decency I’ve recorded some advice on how not to smell horrid. Obviously many of these recommendations don’t apply to Gallery’s fragrant readership, but judging by the amount of hate mail that comes in two or three months after they’ve published one of my articles, this magazine slowly does the rounds of the whole island, a bit like your mum. If you smell and are reading this, you can thank me by opening the bus windows and no longer brushing your teeth with your sock.

Several thousand years into advanced civilisation you’d think this would be obvious, but it really is amazing how many grown adults have yet to master the use of soap. I considered whether “being allergic to soap” might be the new “being allergic to bread”, but a quick scan of my Facebook news feed has yet to demonstrate any gullible idiots reposting blog articles on the beauty of the soapfree lifestyle. It’s more likely that the constantly harried Jersey worker has relegated the morning shower to the same status as breakfast, and so what should be a thorough de-germing of belly button and bottom crack has become the hygienic equivalent of a quick coffee and some biscuits at the desk. The problem is that this approach doesn’t shift persistent bacteria, leading to the strange phenomena of people who look 100% the business until you get close enough to smell them - then they’re closer to the business end

of a donkey. There’s also the issue of feet, which will gradually devolve into slabs of raw Camembert if you don’t make time to soap and scrub them quite regularly. It used to be that fetid trainers were restricted to teenage boys, but there’s plenty of highearning finance women sporting toes that whiff like Parmesan rind. These are probably the same girls who don’t realise that super-expensive denim still needs to be cleaned once in a while, unless for some reason you actually want to nurture a crotch with more varieties of yeast than a craft brewery. Also remember to floss every day, you filthy, filthy heathens.

Tip #2: Choose an appropriate scent

It’s true that perfume was originally designed to mask the inherent stinkiness of humanity, but that was before anybody who wasn’t royalty had access to hot water and a loofah. It also probably contained mercury and radioactive isotopes. If you want to make best use of modern perfume the rule is to apply a good quality scent sparingly to the blank canvas of clean skin, rather than waft it all about like a catholic priest in the middle of a particularly dirty exorcism. Strong perfume won’t cover up body smells, but will instead join with them to produce a toxic symphony of stench, like that time I tried to cover up a blocked toilet by chucking a bowl of pot pourri in there. I also wish some basic guidance was available in perfume stores, not just to a sensible amount to apply but also to prevent grown adults from purchasing celebrity scents from the likes of David Beckham and Katy Perry. The male ones produce the nose-curling sensation of marine-themed air freshener or spicy furniture polish, whereas the most recent Katy Perry blend smells like a run down stripper has relieved herself into a Slush Puppy machine. I do have to take my hat off to the marketing departments of Lynx and Impulse deodorants, as they have apparently convinced hordes of young people that they smell of sex and summertime, whereas the truth is that Lynx smells of scooters and Impulse like jungle-strength fly spray mixed with graveyard flowers.

Tip #3: You are what you eat

Assuming that you’re both smart and considerate enough to broadly follow tips

#1 and #2, you will need to make doubly sure that you don’t undo all your good work by consuming foods that will force your body to emit smells no matter how clean it is. This is a terrible shame, because aged cheese and raw garlic taste wonderful, but if you partake of these pleasures you owe your fellow humans the respect of keeping a reasonable distance until you’ve established they can tolerate breath that smells like a French bistro. Spicy food, on the other hand, may not make your breath reek, but will insidiously worm its way throughout your body until your armpits are having a Mexican fiesta. The same effect is produced by faddish high-protein diets, so perhaps before you foolishly boast about your caveman digestive system you might want to remember that cavemen also died at 30 and probably stunk like an open landfill on a hot day.

Last, but far from least, is the golden rule of polite smells: unless you’re in the company of people who regularly see you naked, keep the gaseous contents of your bottom completely private. No stealth releases, no ‘crop dusting,’ no post-guff cheeky disclaimers or blaming it on the dog. Breaking wind in front of other people isn’t jolly banter, it’s expecting another human being to inhale decomposing food particles that have been marinating in your colon. When it’s 8AM and the only thing in my body is a triple G&T, I really don’t want my first calories to be the inhaled remnants of a stranger’s kebab dinner. Keep calm, and hold it in until you get home.

where your products have come from. That’s why we started this. Everyone can go to the supermarket and buy groceries but they won’t enjoy the same banter as at a market.’

At home you might enjoy a cup of tea made with local milk, some Guernsey Gache topped with creamy Sark butter or a bacon sandwich sourced from locally-reared pigs.

‘We are giving people want they want and we need their support. It’s about creating a traditional market and a local community within the heart of town. It is run by the traders and for the traders. ‘The street food is pivotal to the market’s success as it attracts a lot of people to meet up and eat their lunch - there is a fantastic social atmosphere over lunchtime. But we need to encourage more support for fresh produce, both in terms of attracting more traders and more customers.

uernsey is a fresh food lover's paradise. There is an abundance of amazing local produce, grown and reared on the island and gathered from our surrounding waters. And thanks to the hard work of many, these fresh ingredients easily find their way into most islanders’ daily diets.

Dining out, you can eat fantastic seafood one night and beautiful local beef another. Vegetarians and vegans are also well catered for in many of our restaurants, which make the most of local crops. Guernsey encompasses self-sufficiency in style. Our fishing industry is widely respected for its sustainability, which is driven by both tradition and respect for the environment. On land the handful of big commercial farms are equally revered for their free range and organic principles. And then there is the dairy, numerous butchers and an abundance of hobbies farmers and small artisan producers that all contribute to our dynamic local food industry. It’s no surprise that a lot of Guernsey produce is successfully exported. But our fresh food is best enjoyed on island, close to source. And it’s regularly embraced as a key selling point for tourism, with the current national TV advertising campaign focused around how swiftly harvested food can be transformed into local delicacies, ready to eat. While our produce has always been available in our shops, in recent years we have also seen the resurgence of many traditional outlets to celebrate and trade it. One such venture, Fresh Friday in Market Place, celebrates its third anniversary this month. Every Friday morning a range of stalls emerge in homage to the bygone Guernsey Market, trading fresh fish, meat, vegetables, chutney, pate, deli, cakes and much more. A variety of freshly made hot and cold meals are also available, making the market a favourite for many town workers and other passersby seeking a Friday lunch treat. This street food regularly includes traditional Thai dishes, freshly cooked paella, Hungarian stews, sweet pastries, freshly made wraps and much more. Fresh Friday organiser Sonia Taylor said: ‘From our point of view it’s important to have face to face retail on the island and to know

With islanders forever lamenting the old Guernsey Market she said Fresh Friday was all about recreating that atmosphere.

‘Fresh Friday is about establishing a fresh approach to trading local produce and making producers and consumers responsible for creating their own market.’ Similar enterprises can be found all over the island. St Martin’s is well served by the longstanding weekly Farmers and Fisherman’s Market, which takes place all year round on Saturday mornings. In winter it is held in the parish hall and in summer it’s open air at Sausmarez Manor. Alongside all manner of edibles, stallholders trade locally grown plants, recycled reconditioned tools and garden implements. Elsewhere, Le Friquet hosts the Castel Farmer’s Market every other Saturday morning, where Guernsey Gache, Beanjar and local ice cream can be found alongside fresh produce. Out west is the St Peter’s Community Market, held every Wednesday morning in the hut behind the post office. And then there’s hedge veg, a wonderful local institution of families selling their produce on makeshift roadside stalls. Where else in the world can you buy fresh lobster off a hedge? Islanders are rightfully proud of their local produce, with plenty of other events to help promote it throughout the year. The traditional Viaer Marchi and summer agricultural shows are forever popular showcases, where highly contested competition classes even include oversized veg! New for 2015 is the Guernsey International Food Festival, which will take place in September. Look forward to fantastic promotions on offer in our restaurants and bars as well as markets and shows. hich came first, the heg or the veg? Was it simply the amazing similarity of words that first encouraged islanders to start adding little wooden boxes at the end of their driveways? Our unique alternative shopping experience offers cheap, but good quality, Guernsey produce, including fruit, veg, flowers, eggs, jam and chutneys sold, tucked away in the shrubbery.

The stalls vary from simple one-productselling boxes made from old cupboards, to organised tables covered in produce outside local houses. They are based on trust - the stalls are unmanned with only a money box to give in the amount due. These are known as “honesty boxes.” With great offers like this, it’s goodbye bad foodshops from Guernsey! Hedge Veg is also an opportunity for islanders to show off their growing skills. This is great for the buyers as it produces a variety of different goods for whatever appeals to you. This could simply be a different type of potato or tomato, or more extreme

differences, such as produce made without harmful chemicals such as pesticides. The group, Click, from the Young Enterprise Scheme put together a 50 page book, the Guernsey Guide to Hedge Veg. The book gives information of around 50 Hedge Veg stalls, their owners, and where they can be found. Some pages also include recipes that use Hedge Veg produce.

It’s not just for us...

Hedge Veg is not only enjoyed by locals, but many tourists get excited and are surprised at how well the system works. Tourists have said “The wonderful Hedge Veg tradition says so much about the place.” There has also been a tourism boost that could be a result of the Hedge Veg feature on BBC’s TV show, Countryfile, presented by James Wong, from Grow Your Own Drugs. Unfortunately, the trust that Hedge Veg is based on doesn’t always work. A few years ago, there was a Hedge Veg thief who took produce from Hedge Veg stalls, without paying, and sold them at his own stall. This caused a few businesses to fall; one man lost £10-12 worth of potatoes whereas another person lost over £100 worth of flowers. The tinkers. Remember if you want to keep things based on goodwill you need to make sure you don’t forget to pay for your strawberries. Keep Heg Veg alive!

Cook the blackberries in a pint of water until they go soft. Strain the juice into a pan. Cook the apples in the juice until they turn soft. Add sugar and boil. Tip the blackberries into the mix. The mix should be soft and should not contain hard lumps. The blackberries and apples can be bought at Hedge Veg stalls.

Roast some onions, aubergine and courgettes in a pan. Add one tablespoon of curry powder to the pan. Mix some cooked rice with the other ingredients in the pan. Finally add some boiled eggs. The eggs and vegetables can be bought at Hedge Veg stalls. Other vegetables can also be used depending on the season.

Advice for buyers Buying a home and applying for a mortgage can be quite daunting. Where do you start? Do you go to your own bank or look for recommendations from friends and work colleagues? What’s the difference in rates? What’s the best product for your circumstances? At Oracle we have a dedicated team of Mortgage Advisors who deal with your specific case and make recommendations based on your personal circumstances. Once you have made the decision to buy your first property or indeed decide to move up the property ladder you should book an appointment with a mortgage broker to discuss your options. They will advise you on the different criteria with each lender, which bank is better for different types of mortgage, i.e. first time buyers or home movers etc. Most should be able to ‘agree in principle’ a mortgage for you and if you are not in the position to buy just yet then they should be able to discuss an ‘action plan’ to get you into a position in the near future. This could include reducing personal debts like credit cards or waiting until the financial commitment of school or nursery fees are finished.

There is a vast difference in lending criteria and it is important that you can make an informed decision as to which lender is best for you. We often meet with clients who have been recommended to us having already met with their own bank to discuss their options and to be told that they do not fit criteria. After a short meeting with Oracle they are pleased to be advised that they can in fact get a mortgage with a different lender. In the past the first port of call was your own bank because it was perceived that ‘if my own bank can’t help me then no one else will be able to’. In fact, in 2014 over 60% of mortgages arranged in the UK were placed via brokers and it would appear that in Guernsey more and more people are going to a broker rather than direct to their bank. Over the coming months we will be providing general information to our readers on the different types of mortgages available and provide scenarios where each one may be more suitable to clients.

The Island Development Plan – Have Your Say On 16 February, the Environment Department published a consultation document known as the "Island Development Plan". The IDP will be the blueprint for the way in which our island will be developed for the next decade. It will replace the current Urban Area Plan and Rural Area Plan, consolidating and updating policies from both into one reference document. Some of the most interesting proposed policies within the IDP relate to:-

(1)The provision of “Housing Allocation Areas”, expanses of land set aside to meet the housing needs of the island; (2)The introduction of a number of Local Centres throughout the island, with specific policies for how such areas might be developed; (3)The involvement of communities in the shaping of development in their Local Centres;

(4)The need for developers of larger sites to include a proportion of affordable housing; (5)The continued protection of rural Guernsey with development still being largely in the Main Centres of St Peter Port and St Sampson; and (6)The use of derelict glasshouses. The purpose of the consultation document is for the public to have its say before the IDP becomes enshrined as policy. The IDP will affect all of us whether directly or indirectly. Anybody interested in the impact of the IDP on their property or their island would be encouraged to go to www.gov.gg/planreview and consider the draft plan – or to seek advice from us. The opportunity for representations ends on 10 April.

Gallery looks at the bathroom designs making a splash in 2015.

W

hen the bathroom came into the house in the Victorian era it was pretty tasteful by modern standards: all smooth white surfaces with the occasional accent of black tile. There have been some real horror stories since then, however: no estate agent is going to boast about a property still fitted with an avocado suite and matching toilet seat cover. If you’re thinking of giving your bathroom an overhaul, what’s fresh for 2015?

Thankfully, Matt Dudley of Norman Piette is not predicting a return to the coloured suites of the 1970s and ‘80s. ‘I think white is here to stay because people want a bathroom to feel clean,’ he says. ‘Colour can be brought in with accessories, furniture and tiles.’ The top colour choice

for 2015 is definitely grey – the Fifty Shades effect, perhaps? – with different tones and materials including porcelain, slate and anthracite. Kirsty Bayles at Roy’s Ceramics agrees: ‘Grey’s very versatile, it goes with a lot of colours which can be brought in as bold accents.’ If grey isn’t your thing, both Kirsty and Matt concur that beige is a timeless choice. Large tiles which minimise the number of grout lines are desirable, and matte finishes are in – think hotel luxe. ‘It’s a very European feel, minimalistic with really clean lines,’ says Matt. Contrary to what you might expect, big tiles create the illusion of having more space. For a quirkier choice which goes against this trend, glossy metro tiles which make a feature of grout, for example white tiles with black grout, have a cool retro feel. There has been a move away from natural materials like Travertine, largely because they are porous and incredibly hard to keep clean. ‘There has to be a compromise between design and practicality,’ Matt explains. ‘The bathroom is a functional

area so we won’t recommend something that looks fantastic at first but a year later has deteriorated – we have a reputation to uphold.’ If you love the natural look but don’t want to spend your life scrubbing, solid porcelain tiles are available which look like stone or even wooden floorboards. Of this new technology, Gareth Williams at DHS says, ‘Porcelain has great longevity and with these solid tiles, even if they do chip, the colour goes right through.’ Our love affair with freestanding bathtubs, which make striking, sculptural design features, isn’t over yet. At the top end, Norman Piette stocks Laufen tubs – as you walk into their showroom you’ll see a slipper bath made from carronite, a beautiful composite with a matte finish, which really has the wow factor. In new homes, architects are prioritising bathrooms and making them bigger than ever, but historically they were the smallest room in the house. Shoehorning a freestanding bath into a tight space isn’t recommended, and fortunately there is a fabulous range of fitted sanitaryware, including Roca and Twyfords.

The downside of huge baths is that they use gallons of water, which goes against what many of us want now: eco-friendly, water-saving technology. Clever water control is big news and Vado is at the forefront of great, green design: thermostatic mixers, mixers that control multiple water sources and even touchscreen-operated showers. Bigger is better when it comes to showers, with walk-in enclosures taking over from the wetroom, which looked great but was a little too.. wet. There’s nothing wrong with looking at Pinterest for inspiration but you can’t beat actually seeing and touching the products in a showroom (leave your towel and rubber duck at home, you can’t go that far). It’s good to get advice, especially when it comes to the compromise between design and practicality mentioned by Matt. So you’ve seen a photo of a bathroom where everything appears to be floating, creating an illusion of more floor space? It will only be possible if the plumbing in your home allows for it; if you have to box in all your piping, the dimensions of the room will shrink. We replace our bathrooms on average

every seven to 10 years so we’re probably not experts; it makes sense to talk to someone who deals with the issues we face on a daily basis. ‘We’re honest about the downside of certain designs, taking into account practical considerations like accessibility and cleanliness,’ assures Gareth. Lighting is an important consideration in any room, including the bathroom. This is another area where it pays to get advice locally. Accent or feature lights, or a sensor light that illuminates a vanity unit when someone walks in can all add personality to your bathroom. You can even bring in colour through LEDs, echoing an accent colour used alongside pure white. Try C.I Lighting or Edmundson Electrical. And when it comes to heating, radiators are old news – instead you can make a style statement with a gorgeous heated towel rail. DHS stocks Bisque products, the ultimate in designer chic. Whether you’re considering a total renovation or a light facelift for your bathroom in 2015, a combination of clever design and functionality will keep it looking fresh for years to come.

OR anyone that would love to get into boating but is put off by the expense or hassle of boat ownership, a new local business is offering a fresh solution. Rib Days is an affordable boat hire service, offering quick and easy access to a 6.5 meter high performance rib. It is the brainchild of entrepreneur Stefan de Laune, who has set out to simplify the popular local pastime. ‘We live in a group of stunning islands with the most amazing nautical playground on our doorstep. There

is so much fun to be had out on the water, and I’ve created a way to let more people enjoy it,’ said Stefan. ‘Boats are expensive, not only to buy, but with considerable running costs too. Rib Days offers a stress-free alternative, without the cost of purchase, depreciation in value, insurance, mooring, maintenance, winter storage and other expenses to worry about.’ The company’s vessel is a Ribeye S650 fitted with a 150hp outboard, giving a top speed of 40 knots. Rib Days members pay a one off membership fee and then pay as they go or bulk buy discounted days to use the boat. ‘This is turn-key boating – the rib is ready to go at any tide and you just pay for your days and any fuel that you use.

‘When it comes to blowing the cobwebs away you don’t get much better than getting out in the fresh sea air on a fast rib. The opportunities are endless. You can use it for daytrips to Herm and Sark or explore Guernsey’s coastline and countless bays. Or you could get to France in under an hour for lunch.’ Rib Days very much welcomes people that are new to boating and provides qualified instruction to be safe and confident on the water. Those with little experience or no nautical qualifications attend a two-day RYA Level 2 Power boat course, which is taught locally and covered by their membership fee. Those able to prove existing qualifications and experience do not need to complete the course.

The vessel is fully equipped with all the mod cons and safety equipment that would be expected, including VHF radio, touchscreen chart plotter and navigation lights. It also has an anchor, mooring warps and a tender. The Rib Eye 650’s design is strongly influenced by the rib racing world, with a deep V hull making it very seaworthy, easy to handle and fast. It has also been designed with recreation and comfort very much in mind, with a broad beam and ergonomic seats and consoles making the best use of space. After a hard winter studying and test taking, eight of the team at BDO Limited have a new spring in their step as they celebrate success in a wide range of accountancy, taxation and financial management examinations. Three staff members at the St Peter Port based firm have completed their professional qualifications in ACCA and CAT, while one of its assistant managers, Ronan Morrison, has become the first at BDO to achieve the new UK GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) certificate. Meanwhile, another four members of the firm’s steadily growing workforce are now well on the way to becoming professionally qualified having passed interim ACA and ACCA examinations with flying colours. Four were sitting for their ACCA accountancy qualifications. Aaron Ockleford, Dan Tostevin and Russell Morgan passed interim tests while Helen Southwell completed her final ACCA examinations. Summing up his staff’s most recent exams successes BDO Limited Managing Director , Richard Searle said the results were a very positive reflection of the calibre and commitment of the entire team at BDO Limited. ‘I know just how much work goes into all of this and it’s on top of a busy working life. PwC welcomes new Head of Tax for Channel Islands PwC has appointed Justin Woodhouse to lead its Channel Islands Tax practice. Justin joins from the UK Firm of PwC, where he is part of the International Structuring tax team for Financial Services in the UK. He also currently leads PwC’s European Banking and Capital Markets Tax team and sits on PwC UK’s Tax Policy Panel. Justin, who has over 35 years’ experience in the Financial Services industry, holds a Law Degree from Cambridge University. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1981 and was admitted as a Partner of the Firm in 1990. Justin maintains an excellent reputation in both the UK and international marketplaces, having worked in New York, as well as a five year period at PwC in Japan.

Proving that big things come in small packages, White Rock Brewery won the Marketing Achievement on a Small Budget Award at the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Awards in Jersey, on Friday 20 March 2015. Entrants had to demonstrate an effective marketing campaign for under £10,000. The judges noted White Rock Brewery had planned a campaign which ‘benefited from exceptional implementation…and exceptionally creative design. The project management of this campaign deserves a special mention. A lot was achieved with very limited resource.’ Ross Gledhill, co-founder of White Rock Brewery, said: ‘Launching the Channel Islands’ first and only micro-brewery has been an exciting time for us and we are absolutely thrilled to have won the award. While his background has been focused on financial accounting, Mr Polson has also built up a wealth of experience in the regulatory, compliance and company secretarial requirements of managing captives and of managing client relationships. Hong Kong expansion for Louvre Louvre Group’s Marco Ferreira is departing for Hong Kong to lead the organisation’s fund administration expansion plans in the region. Marco will have oversight of local operations and drive sales and business development activity within the fund services sector. The Louvre Group has had a presence in Hong Kong since 2007 and has gradually expanded its fiduciary services business. Marco’s move gives the Group additional local capacity and will ensure all opportunities can be fully developed. The Hong Kong office will provide a local infrastructure along with access to Louvre’s fund software which allows for management oversight and support in administrative matters. Louvre’s Guernsey team will also be able to take advantage of Hong Kong’s time zone to provide valuations at the start of the business day in Guernsey. Marco brings international fund services experience to the role, with over 16 years in the finance industry both here in Guernsey and in South Africa.

Uni attended? University of York Course undertaken? Geography What did you want to be when you were 8? Batman Favourite way to relax? I’m not really one for relaxing. Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? Le Petit Bistro. What’s your favourite possession? My ski boots.

What made you choose the company you work for? Whilst at university I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do next. I decided to use the three years wisely and applied to local firms for work experience opportunities in areas that interested me. EY stood out to me, right from the start I felt my contribution was valued; I enjoyed the culture and was involved in a few sports and social events which was fun, but it was the strong commitment to developing their people which helped me decide EY was the place for me. What sort of professional training do you take? During the first three years you study towards a professional qualification. I’ve chosen the Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland (ICAS) which has recently been accredited at Master’s level. The qualification is very broad and covers subjects such as business law, business management and finance. Becoming a Chartered Accountant really does open up a world of opportunities and people go on to have interesting and varied careers, some even starting their own business. What do you do on an average day? The job is varied so there is no ‘average day’ which really suits me. I enjoy the variety it keeps me motivated because you’re learning new things from different people. I may be in the office in the morning then at a client’s site in the afternoon, so your working environment is varied too. What is your next step? An obvious answer would be to become qualified but then I definitely want to travel. I’m really set on gaining industry experience in different sectors around the world. This is the benefit of being part of a global firm, as EY fully support people wanting to go abroad. Three people who trained in Guernsey have just secured an 18 month secondment to EY New Zealand, so it really does happen. What advice would you give to yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now? It’s a bit of a cliché but make the most of the opportunities that are out there, because there are far more than you would think. Gain as much experience as possible to help you make an educated decision on your career path. If you are still unsure, think about career choices that will keep your options open and will allow you to develop professionally but also personally.

ARE YOU PART OF THE FEMALE MILLENNIAL GENERATION? Libby Spruce, Director at PwC CI and a millennial herself, explores the findings of PwC’s recently launched global report entitled ‘The female millennial: A new era of talent’…..

O

rganisations the world over are currently facing the challenges that come with vast numbers of millennial talent entering and reshaping the workforce. In parallel, they are also challenged with a lack of women in leadership positions, and are fast becoming concerned with the financial and competitive toll this could mean for their organisations.

To coincide with International Women’s Day last month, PwC globally launched a research report entitled The female millennial: A new era of talent. This research firmly puts the female millennial front of mind and is based on international research with 10,105 millennial respondents from over 75 countries worldwide, 8,756 of whom were female millennials. What’s really evident from this study is that female millennials, which consists of those born between 1980 and 1995, are the most confident and ambitious of any female generation. In simple terms, the over-riding message is that when it comes to the female millennial, we really are talking about a new era of female talent. How promising it is to read that the female millennial is much more likely to believe she can reach the very top levels with her current employer, particularly those starting their careers. She ranks opportunities for career progression as the most attractive employer trait, which makes her more career confident and ambitious than previous generations.

Another highlight of the report is that female demand for international experience has never been higher, with 71% of female millennials wanting to work outside their home country during their career. In 2010, I was fortunate enough to spend two fantastic years based at PwC in Sydney, where I further deepened my global expertise in the provision of assurance and advisory services to real estate and investment management clients.

If businesses here want to develop a strong pipeline of future women leaders, it’s vital they understand what motivates this generation.

Creating value through diversity

I’ve always been passionate about raising awareness of the importance and benefits of harnessing people's potential through embracing gender, age, cultural and skills diversity. In fact, the report highlights that 86% of female millennials seek out employers with a strong record on diversity, equality and inclusion.

The female millennial career stage differential Within the report, the insights and desires of the female millennial have been split into three different career stages: career starters (female millennials with 0–3 years’ work experience), career developers (4–8 years’ work experience) and career establishers (9 or more years’ work experience).

Dispelling some significant myths, what all female millennials across all three stages have in common is that they were least likely to have left a former employer because of starting a family, and most likely due to a lack of career opportunities. Employers here in Guernsey take note, female millennials are entering the workforce in larger numbers than ever before and will be vital to our Island’s future commercial success. If businesses here want to develop a strong pipeline of future women leaders, it’s vital they understand what motivates this generation. Jamie Oldfield 28, Lawyer, Carey Olsen What area of law do you specialise in? I work in the litigation department of Carey Olsen, which carries out a variety of both civil and criminal litigation work. Although I am involved in a range of matters, I specialise in commercial, corporate and trust litigation. I have also been involved in a range of administration and liquidation applications and in advising clients in contentious insolvency matters. What are the main duties within your role? The duties within my role are varied and include advising clients on bringing and defending claims, analysing laws and legal precedents in order to develop arguments in preparation for presentation of cases and advising on the potential outcomes of cases, gathering evidence, settling disputes and also attending Court hearings.

Adam Cole 35. Appleby What area of law do you specialise in?

Commercial litigation with a particular focus on directors’ duty claims, corporate insolvency and trust litigation. What are the main duties within your role?

Advising clients on technical legal issues and strategic concerns in the context of high-value commercial disputes. What has been your most interesting project to date?

Recent notable cases involve acting for a number of Guernsey investment companies seeking administration orders in the context of debts exceeding £700million and acting for a named defendant in litigation flowing from the collapse of the Arch Cru investment fund. Does your promotion bring fresh challenges?

Absolutely. The requirement to think on one’s feet in the court room is a constant challenge. What's the most common legal misconception?

What has been your most interesting project to date? A dispute involving a large professional trust company. I was part of the Carey Olsen team that successfully defended the professional trust company and associated entities against a £2 million alleged breach of trust claim, achieving an indemnity award against the other party. This case also establishes the law of Guernsey on the reflective loss principle in the case of a beneficiary's claim through a trust. Does your qualification bring fresh challenges? Yes, qualifying as a Guernsey Advocate will mean that I will have rights of audience (i.e. that I will be able to appear) before the Guernsey Court. This will, of course, lead to new challenges and pressures involved with Court work, such as bringing applications before the Court and appearing in trials, which will involve the examination and cross-examination of witnesses. What's the most common legal misconception? I like to argue, so I would be a good lawyer. There is a large difference between having an argument and preparing a skilled argument. Having the ability to prepare a skilled argument includes formulating an analysis of an issue which addresses, and rebuts, different perspective on a particular topic and requires logical thinking. The ability to yell or badger will not make you a good lawyer.

There are many, but one of the most common is that litigation moves at the rapid the pace seen in TV dramas. It does not!

Carey Olsen remains top offshore legal adviser to LSE clients

Elian launches Funds Compliance Services to overcome clients’ regulatory demands

The Corporate Adviser Rankings Guide (Q1) has once again listed Carey Olsen as the top ranking offshore law firm for London Stock Exchange (LSE) listed clients. Carey Olsen has moved up to third position from fourth place in the previous quarter. The law firm remains the only offshore law firm to feature in the top 10.

In anticipation of fast-changing developments in Jersey’s regulatory environment and the sharper emphasis on corporate governance, Elian has launched a comprehensive suite of professional compliance services that will significantly reduce clients’ regulatory burden.

The guide ranks the top 20 institutional advisers by their total number of London listed clients as well as by client numbers in the eight main FTSE industry sectors. In the offshore law firm table Carey Olsen is reported to advise more than twice as many clients, at 91, compared to its closest offshore competitor law firm. In the financials sector table, which ranks firms across the UK, Carey Olsen leads the field for the second consecutive quarter with 61 listed clients. The law firm also makes its debut onto the oil and gas table with four listed clients. Its position as adviser to FTSE 350 clients also remains strong with two FTSE 100 clients and a further 10 clients in the FTSE 250 table where Carey Olsen moved up three places to joint 10th. The firm continues to hold second place in the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) table (the most successful growth market in the world) with 43 listed clients. Carey Olsen partner and head of corporate practice in Guernsey, Graham Hall, said: “We have been placed in first position among the offshore firms for some time in this report as LSE clients and their advisers continue to select Carey Olsen as their offshore adviser of choice. “The sector tables show the balance of work across several markets. Our lead position in the financials table is a reflection of our core client base and it is encouraging to see our growth into other sectors, such as oil and gas, in this past quarter."

With the increasing level of regulatory requirements being introduced we have bolstered our expertise within the team and looked at ways to raise the bar with our compliance services to funds. IT support enables Guernsey Community Foundation to focus on charitable efforts USED to helping others, the Guernsey Community Foundation has received some welcome IT support which will enable it to operate more effectively. Next Generation IT has moved the Foundation onto its Office Anywhere service and will be providing a cloud-based server infrastructure without cost. The service, which is worth more than £6,000 a year, will ensure Foundation staff have access to their emails and files from the office or remotely and will provide IT support, backup, monitoring and maintenance. ‘The Foundation promotes effective philanthropy, and so any assistance Next Generation IT provides them will have an exponentially positive impact on the local community as it allows them to focus their time and money on encouraging volunteering and supporting other local charities locally,’ said Next Generation IT director Jason Connolly. Dave Chilton, chief executive of the Guernsey Community Foundation, said Next Generation IT’s support would reduce its operational costs.

Expansion for Ravenscroft Ravenscroft has expanded into the UK after purchasing a 75% stake in Peterboroughbased private client stockbroking company A Vartan Limited, now to be re-branded as Vartan Ravenscroft Limited. Jon Ravenscroft, group chief executive officer of Ravenscroft, and Andrew Vartan, chief executive officer of Vartan Ravenscroft, are old school friends and the two companies have had a close working relationship since Ravenscroft was established in 2005. ‘Andrew and I have known each other since school and we have a very similar approach to the stockbroking business. We also share the same fundamental values. The team based in Peterborough have also built up strong working relationships with our team in the Channel Islands over the past few years,’ said Mr Ravenscroft. ‘Andrew and I felt that the two businesses were stronger together as it offered real opportunities, for both to further develop our enterprises, I am delighted that the boards of both companies also felt that this alignment would add value.’

Ravenscroft, which is the only locallyowned independent stockbroking and investment management company in the Channel Islands, will continue to operate under its present name with A Vartan Limited rebranding to Vartan Ravenscroft Limited. Geneva’s annual Salon International de l’Auto is considered one of the most important motor shows globally and the perfect place to showcase the latest in vehicular concepts, giving us a glimpse into the near future of motoring. Having spent a day gawking at the mouthwatering automotive offerings whilst simultaneously and paradoxically basking in the sweltering and insanely dehydrating light of a million suns suspended from the ceiling, I discovered that all the future holds is a vast array of variations on the Mercedes G-Wagen theme and an alternative fuel vehicle called a Quant. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to be said about them though as their website provides only mystery as to how the car works and the stand was just a gigantic glass fortress filled with attractive young women that nobody was allowed into. Apart from the two gentlemen behind the brand whose mugshots appear on said vague website. Whilst Mercedes were busy continuing the tradition of pretending to drop the G-Wagen from their range yet again by presenting us with a ‘brand new’ four litre twin-turbo V8 version of their 36 year old workhorse called the G500 4x42, everywhere else aftermarket tuners seemed to be proudly shoehorning in even more absurdly powerful engines to their G-Wagens to the point where most of the floor looked like a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where only gangster rappers had managed to survive. The exception to this rule was Kahn’s latest offering, their 105 Flying Huntsman Longnose Defender. Imagine the body of a 90 inch Land Rover Defender, but mounted onto a 110 Defender chassis with 20 inches added to the front wings. As if by means of justification, they’ve also swapped the Transit engine for one of GM’s LS3 V8s but Twisted have been doing this for a while without making their Defenders look like an extra from the set of Thunderbirds. So, what have we learnt so far? Gangster gas-guzzlers and hybrid gasguzzlers are the order of the year for 2015. Another manufacturer present who have been promising us that they’re going to stop producing their flagship model whilst simultaneously unveiling a plethora of special edition versions is Pagani, although I must admit that the engineering beauty that lies beneath the carbon skin of their

Porsche’s narrow-bodied 964 Carrera, in its purest and most perfect form. Inside, matching olive green leather covered almost every surface bar the cushioned areas on the bucket seats which were instead trimmed in contrasting dark green tartan left me almost paralysed, only able to move one footstep at a time to appreciate it from every conceivable angle. It may sound excessive, but it really was that good. Volkswagen didn’t disappoint by extending their range to include Variant variants (that’s estate, to the rest of us) of their Golf models across the board including the GTD and even the R version as well as a raft of electronic and hybrid versions of their

Promptly ignoring almost everything that lay between the elevated bar area and the pastel-green shape that had been so recognisable even from afar I stood within touching distance of what is possibly the most incredibly beautiful piece of automotive artwork I’ve ever witnessed. A brand new restoration build of an original RUF RCT, the boutique German manufacturer’s turbocharged take on

entire range, it’s just such a shame that they can’t seem to make their mind up about whether or not to put the Golf R400 into production. After all, who doesn’t need a 400 horsepower lava-hot hatch? Other highlights included one of only three Longtail McLaren F1s manufactured and the 2011 24 Heures du Mans winning #2 Audi R18 Ultra of Fässler, Lotterer and Tréluyer that defeated Peugeot in an against-all-odds feat of endurance and Ferrari avoidance, the end of which I barely remember due to excess alcohol consumption despite being right there at the Circuit de la Sarthe when it all happened. Whoever said you should never meet your heroes clearly wasn’t talking about Le Mans prototypes. Wow, all of this typing has made me thirsty…

I recently turned 20. Some of our readers may look at that and gasp at the fact that 1) they’re giving such a young upstart the gargantuan responsibility of the Gadgets section, and 2) that I and most of my peers now consider ourselves old. Every day that we wake is another step over the threshold that took us closer to 40 than it did to birth. However, it’s not all doom, gloom and wrinkles! Yes, we’re growing ever closer to the end. Yes, our bones have started to ache and we wake up at ludicrous hours in the night to use the toilet, and yes, we’ve started looking on the young and judging them with soul-crushing glares. But the biggest advantage to a 20-year-old mid-life crisis is that you retain a certain youthful glow, a freshness if you will. For those who are reading this with a nostalgic glaze over their eyes as they tamper with those stubborn crow’s feet, there is always the world of technology. This month, we’re looking at gadgets to help you maintain that fresh look and feeling. That’s right; forget exercise, diet and healthy living (please don’t), now you can use electronics to get rid of all imperfections. It may not stop you feeling 40, but you certainly won’t be reminded of the fact that time is catching you when you look in the mirror.

This month is really making me realize that beauty gadgets are all a bit…unoriginal?

FACIAL-FLEX FACIAL EXERCISE SYSTEM Be calm. Whilst the word “exercise” may conjure images of sweat, blood, tears and iron, this little device by Facial-Flex can help tone your muscles without the need for 20kg plates or precarious treadmills. To (reportedly) combat a sagging neck, jowls, lines around the mouth and nose and even eye wrinkles, all you need to do is clip this exceedingly simply designed gadget into the corners of your mouth and flex those cheek muscles that lie deep beneath that extra skin on your cheeks. It may be quite a stretch to call this a “gadget”, as it’s really just two clips and a rubber band, but people online seem to swear by its efficacy. There also needs to be some pre-warning that, just because you’re willing to look like you’re trying to chew your own cheeks off for an hour a day, you’re not going to look like David Gandy. There’s a certain element of genetics and/or drug use that may limit your success in building facial muscles, but you can guarantee that you’ll be the only person in the gym with the tenacity to work them. What you think that makes you as a person is on you. Whilst you can get these online at www.facialflex.com, I’d personally advise that, if you do get the urge to work on your facial muscles, you save your money and time and just make one of these yourself. It doesn’t look any more complicated than a few copper wires and an elastic band.

NEW SPA MICRONEEDLE SKIN CARE SYSTEM The perfect way to describe this product straight off the bat is the opening line of the review on InventorSpot: “if you don’t mind piercing your skin repeatedly with a bunch of little needles then the New Spa Microneedle Skin Care System might be for you”. I couldn’t have said it better myself, and usually I like to pride myself on that very skill. In theory, this product pierces tiny holes in your skin in order to produce more collagen, thus improving the plumpness, elasticity and, luckily, scar reduction. It also allows anti-aging creams to get into the skin and be more affective. Now, in this review, I feel like it’s more pertinent for me to focus on the lunacy that it requires for a person to buy this rather than the gadget itself. At what point in one’s life does it become a logically sound decision to buy something that, without trying to hide its intentions at all, repeatedly stabs you in the face in order to make your skin better? I may be deep in the tumult of an early-mid-life crisis, but I can safely say that, no matter how many lines and wrinkles appear on my visage, stabbing at them will never be my solution, and really, with the number of anti-aging creams and powders on the market today, it seems like there is no real justification for what could be easily misconstrued as an archaic torture. I’m not sure why you’d want to, but you can get these online for roughly £16.

Over the many years we have been serving our local communities, we have seen dramatic changes in the technology we use and the way we like to communicate with each other. Just consider how many times we now write a letter to someone rather than use email, Facebook or Twitter, etc. It’s really not that long ago that only a few people had a mobile, now I guess we couldn’t live without one. At NatWest we’ve continued to adapt the services we offer, with more and more of our customers managing their finances online or via our mobile banking app - the statistics speak for themselves! Friday 27th February this year, saw the highest number of log-ins to our NatWest app since it was launched in 2011, with 23,000 log-ins in just one day! Whilst our app grows in popularity, it has been important for us to develop our technology. Last month, we launched Touch ID for our iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 plus customers, allowing them to log-in to the app with just a fingerprint. One of our more popular app services is Get Cash. Get Cash allows you to withdraw cash without your bank card at any NatWest/RBS cash machine via a six digit secure code generated from your app: perfect for those that have rushed out the door and left their wallet at home. It is also a perfect way for parents to send a set amount of money to their children who might need funds for the bus home or that spontaneous trip to the cinema. Where will technology take us in two years time? Time will tell, however, we will continue to listen to what our customers want and at the same time keep close to the rapid developments in technology. But for now, it’s the weekend, stay ‘App-y’

NUFACE TRINITY FACIAL TONING DEVICE Apart from looking like an art school student’s electric razor, this little gadget’s title does not leave much to the imagination in terms of its function. Much like the critically-acclaimed ab belts that were advertised using people that had clearly been in the gym their entire lives, the Trinity Facial Toning Device uses small microcurrents to stimulate the muscles in your face, supposedly giving you a more defined look by toning the muscles. However, much like the small needles stabbing you in order to open up your skin, electrocution sounds like it might be a step too far in the search for the perfect, youthful face. If freshness now means that I need to use what looks like the world’s oddest marital aid on my poor jaw, I think it’s more than justified that doctors and experts suggest that we stick to the old methods: diet and exercise. At $365 from online stores, it seems like the dream of electrically stimulated muscles is reserved for those with too much money for a gym membership. My advice? Strip some wires from the mains in your house and see if that works. I mean surely the higher the voltage, the bigger the effect, no?

A

n electric Ford with a folding bike in the boot might not be what you’d expect at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, but was just one of a whole range of cars on show demonstrating the importance of continuous and high speed data access for the next generation of vehicles. Whether it is cars, smart meters or people; we are seeing no slowdown in the growth of connections and the volume of data that these connections demand. This extends to the mobile experience, as people are relying more and more on their phones to perform various functions. More and faster data is now expected on mobile handsets and, fortunately, Sure is the first to introduce cutting edge 4G technology to the island in the form of its new network. The installation of 4G is a huge project that represents an infrastructure investment of over £10 million to keep Guernsey at the forefront of communications technology. Sure has partnered with Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, to deliver the new 4G network and to upgrade the existing 2G and 3G networks across the island. 4G will enable customers to experience much faster mobile data speeds than are currently available, completely revolutionising the online mobile experience. Applications such as web browsing, video streaming and mapping will all become far more accessible and speedy

on the new network, signalling a change in the ways we use data and what we use it for. According to Ofcom’s Adults’ Media Use and Attitudes Report 2014, the range of mobile activities has increased and the majority are communication and entertainment-based. Over half (55 per cent) of mobile users send and receive emails on mobile and use their mobile to visit social networking sites or apps. Four in ten mobile users have used their mobile phones to put photos or videos on sites like YouTube, while the same number use their phone for instant messaging. Almost three in ten use services like Skype or FaceTime. One third of mobile users now say they buy things via their phone (increasing from 23 per cent in 2012) or use their phone to check their bank balance (34 per cent vs. 25 per cent in 2012). Watching TV and gaming via mobile are also increasingly popular uses of mobile data. According to the report, 22 per cent of mobile phone users have watched a TV programme on a mobile phone and playing games on a mobile phone has also increased by 7 per cent for internet users. Over 90 per cent of the phones that we now sell are Smartphones, and with 4G ready phones available for less than £100, we expect the vast majority of our customers to be taking advantage of the improved mobile data experience on our network over the coming months. We also expect customers to move usage away from public Wi-Fi to the 4G network to take advantage of the speedier data, especially for video streaming.

This year we saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, which features a curved screen, and the new HTC One M9, alongside demonstrations of what 5G could start to deliver towards the end of this decade. Another trend is wearable tech, which is set to become even more popular this year.

Features of the e-bikes include sensors that allow riders to be alerted when a vehicle is coming up too fast behind them. Triggering vibrations allowing the rider to make adjustments as well as flashing lights to warn the approaching driver of the cyclist. The handlebars of the new Ford e-Bikes are equipped with haptic feedback and can be linked to GPS software enabling the bike to guide the rider by providing feedback to indicate when to turn right or left through the handgrips. If you’re a lover of music and haven’t already heard about the arrival of Jersey’s brand new summer event, Reasons Electronic Music & Arts Festival, you really should think about sharpening up your partyradar skills. The boys behind event production collective ‘Rocksteady’ have decided to ramp up this year’s electronic music offerings, and expectations, in Jersey this summer by delivering a 12 hour event showcasing no less than 30 artists performing over four separate stages in the stunning surroundings of Jersey’s Coronation Park, once voted ‘Best Park in the British Isles’. With a record number of festivals taking place in the Channel Islands at present (see Page 20 for our diary of festivals) is there really a call for more local jamborees of a musical nature? And will Reasons Festival really be bringing something new to the island’s eventscape? The answer is, on both counts, of course, yes. Reasons Festival is the brainchild of local DJs and promoters Ben Newman & John O’Connell, founders of the Rocksteady collective. Reflecting on decades of the extraordinary electronic scene, come Saturday 11th July 2015, they aim to recognise, appreciate and celebrate the many corners of this much loved, cultural phenomena by inviting a plethora of varied talented artists in the field, with the objective of delivering an eco friendly, allinclusive, and outright fun electronic music festival, to be danced at and remembered, by both islanders and visitors alike. One look at this year’s line up announcements so far clearly shows the scope of musical contradiction yet connectedness, heroes of heritage alongside modern electronic musical maestros. The first wave of acts were announced at a special Reasons Festival launch last month, musically hosted by darling of the UK scene, Justin Robertson. Among the 15 acts announced that night were UK techno duo Simian Mobile Disco (cued up to close the main stage), Jazzy B OBE (founder of Soul II Soul, both group & sound-system), Berlin based producer Jägerverb, residents of DJ collective Tessellate, Horsemeat Disco, Aim & Space Dimension Controller.

The second wave of artists announced include Josh Wink, Drum & Bass producer/ DJ Wilkinson, alternative L.A. The popular Carlton Dance was actually a parody of the dance Courteney Cox did in the music video for Bruce Springsteen’s 1984 hit “Dancing in the Dark.” Said Ribeiro, “It was also inspired by Eddie Murphy’s ‘the white man dance.’ And what I did was ultimately take those two dances and combined them and made it my own, and made it my character’s. But ultimately it’s ‘the white man dance.’”

Fans Helped Extend the Show by Two Seasons

The show was originally canceled after the fourth season when Will moved back to Philadelphia. Letters from fans poured in to Will Smith and NBC persuading them to renew the show. The show ended up continuing for two more seasons.

Will Smith Agreed to Star Because of IRS Troubles As he gained widespread fame as a rapper, Smith didn’t manage his money wisely or pay enough in income taxes. He owed $2.8 million to the IRS, which seized most of his belongings, including his income. Close to declaring

bankruptcy, producer Quincy Jones offered Smith the chance to star in the series. The IRS forced Smith to pay them 70 percent of his salary during the first three seasons.

Jazz Was Only Thrown Out of the House Once

Because it required on-location filming (which can get expensive), only one shot of Jazz being thrown out of the house was ever filmed. To avoid continuity errors, Jazz is always wearing the same shirt in the episodes that include him being thrown out.
