To blend or not to blend?

S

ometimes in life, it’s necessary to “blend in,” to play nice and try to get along with people. It’s just a simple fact of life. Try not to be annoying, disruptive or intolerant because that just brands you as difficult and then nobody wants to work with you or socialize with you. Sometimes, you have to bend to blend and if everyone else wants pizza then stop going on and on about ordering sushi for the love of God (for example). It’s not that your voice doesn’t matter but sometimes compromise tastes like pizza. However, on the other side of the coin, knowing when not to blend in can be just as important. Knowing when to speak up and say the difficult thing at the most awkward time is brave and honest and necessary. Going against the tide and not blending in, choosing not to stifle your words will become the backbone of your whole personality. So, don’t be the boy who cried sushi, keep your voice for the big stuff. Obviously, you wouldn’t be reading Gallery if you were a total blender because we are not afraid to stick our head above the parapet here, but never in an annoying way of course, and we’d like to think that our readers have the same mix of decent morals blended with a healthy level of suspicious cynicism. Right, glad we got that all cleared up. Now, moving onto the minutiae of March: Spring officially begins on Friday 20th March and remember, there’s still time to marvel over, “The Luxury of Time,” at the Manx Museum in Douglas or take in the heady atmosphere of the darts at the 2020 Isle of Man Darts Festival. Shopping, Tynwald Mills has lots to offer, (see page 65 ). If it’s laughs that you’re after, then Ardal O’Hanlon and Rob Beckett are both popping by the Villa Marina this month. Top that with the Manx Budget looking positive and you should get nice blended feeling of contentment. SR

//PEEL CENTENARY CENTRE// First up is ‘Beast’ (cert 15), a modern day fairy tale inspired by the real life ‘Beast of Jersey’ and then on 24 March, the British true story of WWE wrestling star Paige and her family ‘Fighting With the Family’ (cert 12A). More information about these films, and those scheduled for the coming months can be found at www.facebook. com/filmsinpeel where you can also book tickets.

ISLE OF MAN DARTS FESTIVAL

Now – 10.05.2020

04.03.2020

//MANX MUSEUM, DOUGLAS// A special display of rare and significant historical timepieces telling the story of the golden age of innovation in British watch and clock making. The Luxury of Time will feature 25 objects from the private collection of Island resident Dr John C Taylor OBE, an engineer, entrepreneur and one of the UK’s most prolific inventors.

//GAIETY THEATRE, DOUGLAS// Where Ardal comes from there is nothing worse than showing off. Yet he is a professional ‘show-off’. Why does he do it? Just when he thought he’d made sense of the world, when he thought he’d found wisdom, when he’d finally found a hat that fits and learned how to make decent cocktails and to relax for the first time in his life and when he was about to quit airing his dirty linen in public and stop showing off the world shifted dramatically. Ardal is forced to saddle his high horse again and ride fearlessly into the culture wars (with a white hankie in his pocket just in case), comedy as ever being the best emergency response mechanism to extreme events there is.

THE LUXURY OF TIME: CLOCKS FROM 1550 TO 1750

S AT I R E

Ecstatic reports from the organisers of Veganuary are claiming that this year’s plant-based diet challenge has encouraged record numbers of people to experiment with tofu. The lettuce munchers clearly hope a quick dabble with the white stuff will serve as a slippery slope to harder pleasures, like Quorn lasagne and the Wimpy beanburger, but I wonder if people actually just respond on a deep psychological level to strict dietary rules - particularly if they get to break them after a month by smothering themsleves in lard and biting the head off a chicken.

14

LIFE & ST YLE IN JERSEY

S AT I R E

Never one to miss an opportunity I’ve hatched the idea of copyrighting a strict dietary challenge to run a bit later in the year. It’s going be called “Liquid Lent” and will raise awareness of the plight of people who can’t or won’t chew properly. It has nothing to do with the Christian festival,

my branding consultants just told me that I needed something alliterative and that in any case none of the churches will sue. For the entire period we will join together in promising to eat every meal in liquid form - no lumps, no bumps, no solid dumps. It might not require teeth but that doesn’t

mean it’s going to be easy to swallow. In conjunction with my sponsors (Nutribullet; Andrex), I’ve developed a menu for any cafés or restaurants who fancy paying my modest licensing fees to slurp down a bit of the action.

THE FRED FLINTSTONE The MMA/Crossfit contingent were very worried about veganuary, but it turns out you can do just as many #inspirational social media posts about #dedication on a plant-based protein powder as you can do when eating bucketloads of poached chicken, with the added bonus that you may start going to the toilet more than once a week. As experienced shake consumers I expect they’ll take to Liquid Lent like shredded duck to water, but we’ll leave nothing to chance with this highperformance #paleo concoction available from anywhere that does most of its business selling protein bars and Gold’s Gym tank tops.

THE BEAUTIFUL ISLE OF MAN I haven’t checked but I’m confident that the traditional tourist market was 100% on board with Veganuary, especially in the flexible winter season. I expect the vegan fry-ups were just flying out the door. We mustn’t leave them out for Liquid Lent, so I hope all the beach cafés and hotels will consider adding this mealshake to their menus. You don’t even need to put your teeth in to enjoy it.

THE WORKING BREAKFAST When you toil in an environment where getting in less than an hour early marks you as a quitter, one way to achieve work-life balance is to take some advice from the nice lady that HR brought in after three administrators quit from exhaustion at the end of the financial year. Yes, follow her advice and make fifteen minutes of mindful “you time” in-between driving manically from dropping the kids at nursery and hitting your desk at 7.30 AM. I want to support you, so I’m saying you can achieve this via the time economy saved by chugging both breakfast and lunch during your car journey. INGREDIENTS: FAIRTRADE EXTRA STRONG COFFEE*, ORGANIC OATS**, HEMP POWDER,** CHIA SEED BLEND***, POMEGRANATE SEEDS ***, ORANGE JUICE*, MODAFINIL**** NOTES: *FARMED BY CONTRACTORS FOR A BERMUDAN SHELL COMPANY OWNED OUT OF PANAMA AND TRADED THROUGH LIECHTENSTEIN **MAY CONTAIN W W W.G A L L E R Y. THE BREXIT REFERENDUM It’s the controversy of the decade - like rival houses in Game of Thrones the two camps of Leave and Remain are still bitterly divided, even as Britain sets sail into an uncertain future outside the European Union. As “a slice of Britain” the Isle of Man was already outside the EU so we must take the opportunity to offer neutral ground, compromise and perhaps even reconciliation. There’s nothing worse than arguing over mealtime so perhaps we can achieve harmony with two liquid meals served together. At Liquid Lunch we respect both sides of the debate. THE BREXITEER - INGREDIENTS: BENDY BANANAS, REAL ALE, ENGLISH WINE, GAMMON PUREE SERVED WITH A BLUE PASSPORT AND DAILY MAIL SHAVINGS PRICE: 1 EURO - NO TELLING HOW MANY POUNDS THAT’S WORTH THE REMOANER - INGREDIENTS: STRAIGHT BANANAS, BORDEAUX WINE, CYPRIOT HALLOUMI, SUBSIDISED GERMAN CABBAGE, BRITISH FISH - SERVED WITH A PINK PASSPORT AND GUARDIAN EXTRACT PRICE: 10 EUROS

THE HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER Everybody loves the magic of the movies, particularly the magical way that your wallet empties and leaves you with nothing but a bucket of salt, grease and regrets when the curtain comes up. This shake will save valuable time spent queuing for the one teenager who is slowly issuing tickets on the busiest Saturday night of the year. If the restrooms are not to your satisfaction, please notify cinema management.

UPFRONT

THE GREEN GRETA Veganuary was designed to tempt curious newcomers to the planet-friendly yet flatulent lifestyle but let’s not forget about the OGs, the people who’ve been hunting down veggie sausages since the days they tasted like stale bread with soy sauce on it. These people won’t be left out of my liquid lifestyle because if anybody needs a break from chewing it’s somebody who eats brown rice four times a week. INGREDIENTS: CARBON-NEUTRAL LOCALLY-SOURCED VEGETABLES (KALE, BEETROOT, NETTLES), ENHANCED PROBIOTIC MYCOLOGICAL PROTEIN BLEND (POWDERED MUSHROOMS), MELTED GLACIER, DMT (0.1%) PRICE: 1 KILO OF CARBON OFFSET TAX CREDITS THE LOVE ISLAND There’s only one real Love Island, and that’s the island where you’re reading this magazine. All of my shakes so far have been meal replacments for day-time or evening enjoyment, but what if you were a nutritionist and somebody told you they had a bad case of Saturday night fever? You’d encourage them to take one of these at around midnight, and let the good times roll. 100% guaranteed to insulate against the pain of a broken ankle from stumbling into Mulcaster Street to “feed the seagulls.” INGREDIENTS: SUPERMARKET ENERGY DRINK, SPARKLING NONVINTAGE WINE, CAFFEINE, TAURINE, JELLYFISH TOXIN, KEBAB BITS, HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVE, ANTIBIOTIC BLEND PRICE: AN HOUR’S QUEUE OR ONE NUDE SELFIE TO THE BOUNCERS

SET SAIL FOR A BLENDED SPRING BREAK BRITISH SPRINGTIME BRINGS WITH IT LONGER DAYS, BEAUTIFUL BLOSSOMING TREES AND CLEAR BLUE SKIES, PROVIDING A GREAT EXCUSE TO START PLANNING YOUR NEXT GETAWAY. It could be just what is needed to shake those winter blues and welcome spring in style. When you travel by ferry you have the freedom to bring the car and explore as far and wide as you choose. It also gives you the luxury to stop-off along the way and fit more than just one destination into your trip, meaning you can really make the most of a blended break.

But why stop there? From Liverpool there is convenient access to motorways linking to other great UK destinations, and in less than one hour on the road you could be in Manchester. You only need to spend a short amount of time there to see why it’s one of the most popular cities to visit in the UK, with its friendly Mancunian charm, hip and trendy feel and renowned vibrant nightlife. Considered the Gateway to the North, you can expand your trip even further from Manchester. With great links to cosmopolitan destinations such as Chester, Leeds, York and Newcastle, taking your car makes it easy to experience multiple cities in one break.

A NORTHERN ADVENTURE Fast craft Manannan resumes regular services to Liverpool this month, so you can step off the ferry right into the heart of the bustling city, minutes away from exciting attractions, museums and monuments. With such a great range of high street, independent and designer shops, a fantastic food and drink scene, rich history and striking architecture, it is easy to lose track of time and spend a couple of days or a longer break soaking up the sights, sounds and smells of this iconic northern city.

Or if a couple of days away from the hustle and bustle would hit the spot, the Lake District and Peak District are also easy to get to by car. Pack the car with everything you need for a few days in the countryside – walking boots, fleeces and bicycles included - with no need to worry about luggage fees. The possibilities for adventure are almost endless when you travel by ferry with the Steam Packet Company. With such a great variety of experiences across the UK and Ireland, fitting everything into one trip might be a challenge, but taking the opportunity to enjoy a blended break with multiple destinations and activities is well worth it!

GIVE MANX TELECOM DELIGHTS PRIMARY STUDENTS WITH MINI STEMFEST Over 50 primary school children from Laxey and Dhoon Schools enjoyed an exciting morning of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities courtesy of Manx Telecom on Friday 24th January. The children had originally been due to attend the Isle of Man STEMFest event at the Villa Marina last October but the severe flooding in Laxey left them unable to go. Not wishing the pupils to miss out, Manx Telecom hosted an alternative miniSTEMFest at its headquarters in the Isle of Man Business Park. Activities enjoyed by the children included 3D printing, virtual reality experiences, a lava lamp challenge and learning about levers, forces and chemical reactions as well as new technology. The event was also supported by PDMS, Love Tech, Swagelok, Triumph, Strix, Manx Utilities, Manx Precision Optics and RLC.

and employed.im as a way of demonstrating the wide variety of career paths that are available in on the Isle of Man.

The original STEMFest was organised by the ACE Steering Group (a sub-committee of the Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce)

Manx Telecom’s People Business Partner, Kelley Corlett said it was important that the pupils from Laxey and Dhoon did not

miss out on the experience: “STEMFest is a great way to engage young people in a hands-on, fun environment where they can see how theories and ideas can be applied in practice to make our world a better place.

Browne Craine was enthusiastic to become involved and support the Granite Mann Challenge as it is a fun local sporting event and it helps raise money for a fantastic local charity. “Supporting the Granite Mann Challenge for a second year is a great honour,” said Lynsey Smith, director at Browne Craine. “For the last couple of years, myself and a couple of the other girls from the office joined together and competed in the team event – we had so much fun! A couple of our

colleagues took part in the individual event too. The triathlon had a good turnout and was very well-organised so I’d encourage anyone who is thinking about taking part, whether it’s by themselves or as a team, to sign up and give it a go! It’s a tough event but you won’t regret it, and of course, it will help raise lots of money for The Children’s Centre!”

In 2019, The Children’s Centre and Browne Craine agreed a three year sponsorship deal which will see them supporting the event until at least 2021. To find out more about the event or to express interest in taking part in the Granite Mann Challenge 2020, please contact The Children’s Centre fundraising team: fundraising@ thechildrenscentre.org.im. Cancer. It’s just a word. But when you hear it for the first time in your own home, it’s terrifying. I was 17 when my mom and dad sat me down to tell me that mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer. It was heartbreaking, but in that moment, I knew I had to mentally brace myself for the months to come.

Adrienne’s Divas and Dudes Walk for the Boobs team before the Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk in Washington, DC. Team shirts were custom made and donated to the team to honor Adrienne’s love of sunflowers and butterflies.

In the following months, my mom underwent surgery, multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and came out bald, but thrilled to be in remission. For four years after that, my family’s life was back together and normal again. Sadly, life came back knocking on the door. This time, it wasn’t as positive. At 21, I was told mom had been rediagnosed with breast cancer and unfortunately it was stage four and spreading. My mom was courageous and fought this terrible disease with glamour, grace and determination for four more years until it eventually beat her, and my family, too. Cancer hurts. It took away my favorite person in life. My family of four became a family of three. We lost the one person who meant the most to us. The coming days were difficult, and I suddenly became filled with anger, an emotion I was not use to. How could this happen and why. Cancer knows no bounds. It does not matter if you are rich or poor, healthy or unhealthy, young or old.

raised over $10,000. I received support from all around the world— the U.S., Canada, Central America, Ireland, the Isle of Man and beyond. To say I was proud is an understatement. While it was just a small amount in the grand scheme of things, I know this money at least helped one person. And that is enough. This year though, I pledge to raise even more.

After flying to the Isle of Man from the U.S. to be with family after my mom’s passing, I made a promise to myself and my mom that I would fight for people who were battling breast cancer but did not have the means to support themselves because of the healthcare situation in the U.S. Many uninsured women are unable to receive mammograms and treatment due to high costs. Some women with cancer cannot even afford a taxi to medical appointments. This is unacceptable. These are the women who need to be heard and helped. I decided to organize a team in my mom’s honor to walk in a fundraising 5k to raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Partial funds raised from this event go towards supporting local grants that help underprivileged women receive the care BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

If you love your pet then you’ll love the new mobile dog grooming service from Wagging Wheels. Animal lover Jane Thompson started what she describes as ‘all your grooming needs in one luxury heated salon’ in January and it’s gone from strength to strength with new and repeat customers spreading the word about what one happy client says is ‘a fantastic service right at your door’. Wagging Wheels does indeed come to you, either at home or even to your workplace, right across the Island and you may well have seen its distinctively branded ‘salon’ out and about. And if you think you recognise Jane, then it’s certainly possible – before becoming self-employed she was part of the airport security team. But after her final shift last September, she immediately started work on what she describes as her dream career, as a full qualified pet groomer qualifying to OCM level 2 with the highly respected Trendy Pooches Training School on the Wirral. “Although there are any number of online training courses, I wanted to train with real dogs so as well as grooming techniques I’m also qualified in Canine First Aid and the very effective Tellington TTouch method of calming dogs,” Jane explains. “Even dogs who have been groomed before can be nervous, particularly if it’s a part of the session he or she isn’t familiar with. “It is so pleasing when clients – humans and dogs – are happy,” says Jane. “It’s said that word of mouth is the best form of advertising and it’s certainly working for Wagging Wheels!” As a new small business owner, Jane has not only invested in her own practical training but also taken advantage of the Department for Enterprise Micro Business Grant Scheme. “It’s a bit of a cliché but there’s more to starting a business than just having a good idea,” laughs Jane. “Obviously the idea comes first, but you’ll soon fail if you don’t have the business know-how and this scheme gives you support you really need, a grant which you can use not only to buy physical items but also for advertising and marketing, and a mentor to bounce ideas off. It helps that my mentor Tracy Underwood is not only a successful business person, but also a dog lover, and now a Wagging Wheels client too!”

I’m happy to tailor the Wagging Wheels service to suit. Maybe a general tidy up to start? Or a simple ‘Wash & Go’? I only use gentle, organic products which, of course, are cruelty free.” Jane’s Wagging Wheels Facebook page www.facebook.com/waggingwheelsiom lists the full range of services but if you’re considering booking your precious pet in, then it’s also worth reading the reviews as they are universally positive.

If you’d like to book your dog - whether it’s a pampered poodle or a regal red setter - in for its own doggy spa experience with Wagging Wheels then either message Jane via the Facebook page www.facebook.com/ waggingwheelsiom or phone or text her on 07624 201811.

STEPHEN MILLER RBV

Chiollagh Books website making it one of the longest running websites in the field of Celtic Studies. As well as works mentioned above, the series also includes reprints of Clague’s Manx Reminscences, Roeder’s Manx Notes and Queries, Skeealyn Cheeil-Chiollee: Manx Folk Tales, as well as two editions of Mona Douglas’ Collected Writings on Manx Folk Dance and Song. The Manx Notes series on the website now stands at an impressive 410 entries.

Stephen Miller’s scholarship and dedication to Manx folklore and culture over many decades are recognised in the award of the Reih Bleeaney Vanannan this year. A dedicated researcher into Manx folklore, folksong, and folk dance, as well as the figures and collectors involved with the Celtic revival, Stephen’s time, energy and expertise working on precious archives in the Manx Museum and beyond for over forty years have resulted in an extremely impressive body of work in the field of Manx and Celtic Studies which he continues to share freely online, in print and in person. An early adopter of technology, Stephen’s work has been made available to others on his Chiollagh Books website, by monthly contribution of his research to the Kiaull Manninagh Jiu Manx Music and Dance Newsletter, within the Ballaugh Heritage Trust newsletter, as well as through his own publications and public talks. He remains someone determined to tease remarkable stories relating to Manx cultural and social history out of the archives in order to bring life to some of the key characters who have shaped our Island, to understand what their focus was in terms of collecting, recording or promoting Manx culture, and to share his findings with other researchers. Stephen grew up in the Island, attending Douglas High School for Boys, and went on to gain a BA in History and an MA in Folk Life Studies from the University of Leeds. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Much of his working life was spent attached to various universities, and he has lectured on folklore and folk life. Most recently, his work has taken him to Austria, where he worked at the Austrian Academy of Sciences on the Austrian Academy Corpus as well as teaching at the University of Vienna. In spite of being based away from the Island, he has been a frequent visitor, collecting oral history reminiscences from people during some trips, walking the hills during others, but, in the main, camping out in the national archives held by Manx National Heritage, painstakingly transcribing, collating and generally making sense of old letters, notebooks and other collected papers. His interest in Manx folklore encouraged him to transcribe and re-print such important works as William Cashen’s Manx Folk-Lore and John Rhys’s Manx Folklore and Superstitions, keeping important texts accessible to new audiences. His transcriptions of letters and documents, his tracing of informants and collectors through census material, all of this work has helped a better understanding of the work of various waves of Manx antiquarian and cultural revival and interest. 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of Stephen’s

Stephen is interested in folklore and digitisation within an international context, too, and his research interests extend beyond the Isle of Man to include other figures in the Celtic Revival, as well as Scottish folklorists such as the Reverend Walter Gregor. His research has been published in national and international journals such as Béaloideas, Béascna, Folklore, Folk Music Journal, Isle of Man Studies, Northern Scotland, Proceedings of the Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society, Review of Scottish Culture, Studia Japonica Celtica, Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie, among others. Stephen has been invited to share his research at prestigious institutions such as Cecil Sharpe House in London. Nominations for the award singled out his 2019 collaboration with Culture Vannin on the production of ‘a beautiful edition of Karl Roeder’s Manx Notes & Queries, Ghosts, Bugganes & Fairy Pigs’, which they described as ‘his most sumptuous offering so far.’ ‘It’s fascinating and addictive’, commented one proposer, ‘his knowledge of the material is acknowledged as second to none’, noted another. Stephen was presented with a medal and a cheque, and named Mooinjer Veggey as his chosen Manx cultural cause for the additional donation. For the first time, a certificate designed by Julia Ashby-Smyth was also presented, depicting Manannan with his flowing cloak, staff and Eric Austwickinspired headdress, mirroring the design of the trophy beautifully. The selection panel, comprising representatives from Yn Cheshaght Ghailckagh, Yn Chruinnaght, Manx National Heritage, IOM Arts Council and Culture Vannin, was delighted to name Stephen Miller ‘Manannan’s Choice of the Year’ in recognition of his research into Manx folklore, music and dance and its collection. Without his research and, most importantly, his generosity in sharing what he finds, Manx Studies and Manx culture would not be the same today More information: www.culturevannin.im chiollaghbooks.com

HSBC first Isle of Man bank to receive UNESCO Biosphere status due to successful green initiatives

H

SBC has become the first bank in the island to be accepted as a partner into the UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man project. The UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man project is centred on protecting the island as a special place to live, work and visit. There’s a focus on taking care of nature, wildlife, infrastructure and the economy and looking at ways of introducing energy saving measures, supporting local produce and minimising waste. It’s also about education, helping people understand what makes the island so special and encouraging involvement to keep it that way. The Isle of Man is the first entire nation in the world to receive the UNESCO Biosphere endorsement. HSBC was accepted as a partner thanks to its strong commitment to sustainability in the Isle of Man. This includes HSBC’s global Reduce programme, launched in 2012, which focuses on several areas including paper, energy and water consumption, waste reduction, ethical supply chains and reducing HSBC’s carbon emissions by approximately 40% per employee by 2020. Year on year, HSBC in the Isle of Man also dedicates employee time, expertise

34

and funding to help the local community in areas such as education, sport and the environment, and supports both public and private sectors to work towards achieving the Island’s sustainability goals. HSBC colleagues also collected water samples from natural sources across the Isle of Man as part of HSBC’s global HSBC Water Programme. Run in partnership with EarthWatch, WaterAid and WWF for seven years, concluding in November 2018, the Water Programme enabled the Bank’s island employees to become ‘citizen scientists’. UNESCO Biospheres are areas across the globe that have been endorsed by UNESCO as outstanding places for nature and people and where there is a healthy balance between the two. There are currently 701 biosphere sites in 124 countries, also known as biosphere reserves. Biosphere reserves such as the Isle of Man, encourage people to enjoy these special natural places to the full and get involved in helping to keep them special. Commenting on HSBC’s partnership with the project, Jaime Amoedo, HSBC Isle of Man Country Head, said: “The Isle of Man really is a very

special place to live and work, and it’s important we’re in harmony with the natural environment. As one of the Island’s largest banks, we have a duty to inspire and help customers and employees make a difference.” Isle of Man Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK, who chairs UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man, said: “I warmly welcome HSBC as a Business Partner of UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man. It is important that we work together to ensure a sustainable future for the Isle of Man and the business community has a significant role to play in this, via the commitment of its management and its workforce to contribute to our Biosphere aims.” Chantal Le Goff, Head of Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Channel Islands and Isle of Man, also commented: “We are thrilled that HSBC in the Isle of Man has been selected as a partner of the UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man project, and to be the first bank locally. We’re proud of our green and sustainable initiatives and I look forward to developing on our sustainability projects further drawing on the expertise of UNESCO to protect the Isle of Man.” ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

KPMG publishes 10th anniversary Isle of Man eGaming Summit report

K

PMG, with the support of Continent 8 Technologies, has now published a full report of its landmark 10th anniversary Isle of Man eGaming Summit, held last October at the Comis Hotel and Resort, Mount Murray. The Summit, which celebrated a decade of engagement with eGaming businesses under the theme of “Raising Standards Together”, attracted around 300 delegates, all drawn to hear some of the biggest names in the sector as they reviewed the issues, challenges and opportunities the eGaming industry has met in the past and faces in the future. The report, downloadable for free from the KPMG Isle of Man website at kpmg.co.im/egaming, contains detailed transcripts of sessions from the day covering key presentations and the popular panel discussions where industry experts gave their thoughts on topics including regulation, collaboration and customer protection. Held the day after the announcement of the potential merger of The Stars Group with Flutter, there was a lot of interest in particular in M&A activity and the continuing consolidation of the

industry, as well as thoughtful reflection on reputational issues including the coverage of online gambling in the press. There were also sessions on responsible gambling, the use of technology for good and observations on how the next 10 years could shape up for businesses and their customers. Publication of the report is sponsored by Continent 8 Technologies, which has supported the eGaming Summits since their inception in 2010. Managing Director Michael Tobin said the events were extremely valuable to those in the industry: “KPMG’s eGaming Summits create a space for everyone to debate critical issues and developments as they happen, as well as sharing knowledge and learnings for the greater good of the sector. “We are delighted to play our role in the publication of this report, allowing this information to reach a wider audience, especially those who may not have been able to attend on the day.” Russell Kelly, Senior Partner at KPMG Isle of Man, added: “Once again the Isle of Man eGaming Summit Report provides a detailed account of the presentations and panel discussions that took place

and will be of interest to anyone involved in eGaming and the wider professional services industry. “As Chief Minister Howard Quayle observed in his welcome address, eGaming and digital industries now account for over 30% of GDP of the Isle of Man so it is essential that there are opportunities to take stock of how the sector is progressing, and what challenges and opportunities lay ahead. “This particular Summit also gave us a chance to look back over the past 10 years of eGaming in the Isle of Man, celebrating the achievements that have been made but also setting the scene for the future where innovation and collaboration will be key to continued success. “We are indebted to Continent 8 Technologies, not only for sponsoring the publication of this report, but for their long-term support from the very beginning of our eGaming Summit series. We did not envisage a 10-year programme when we held our first event in 2010 and it is a testament to the commitment of our sponsors, as well as all our speakers, that the Summits continue to be so successful and highly valued.”

Life as a Trainee H Lawyer

Appleby has an established Trainee programme in the Isle of Man. Our programme offers students access to some of the best legal minds in the offshore world with the aim of providing the best training possible. ere, Jennifer Vernon-Browne and Lexi Dernie who are current and past trainees at Appleby in the Isle of Man, share their experiences of life as a trainee at the international law firm.

Tell us a bit about yourself Jen - I am Manx born and went to Ballakermeen High School. In my third year of University I decided I wanted to pursue a career in law so I then completed a two year law degree at Bangor and my LPC and Masters at the University of

Chester. I was offered a training contract with Appleby about a year and a half prior to returning to the island. Lexi – I was also brought up on the island and went to Castle Rushen High School before going to University. I always knew I wanted to become a lawyer, so started studying my law degree straight after school. I did my LPC in Chester before moving back to the Isle of Man and then started my training contract at Appleby in 2011. I was commissioned as an advocate in 2013 and I was promoted to a Senior Associate in April 2019. Jen, how have you found your training contract so far? I’ve really enjoyed it and it has exceeded all of my expectations. The learning curve in your training contract is so much steeper than in your degree and any other kind of academic study but everyone is so supportive. When did you decide you wanted to be a lawyer? Jen – I decided I wanted to study law when I was in my third year of University. When I was studying English I didn’t know what I wanted to do and my degree didn’t make my soul sing. We did a module called English in the Law, which focussed on how barristers use powerful language in a court room. It also included analysing messages and handwriting in crime scenes etc. and looking at the syntax and semantics within a message, all of which I found really interesting. This module sparked the idea and I decided to pursue my law degree - it was pretty much an overnight epiphany. I spoke to a few people who had friends who were lawyers, one of which worked at Appleby. I did a week’s work experience at the firm and after that my mind was set. Once I finished my English degree, I saw Appleby were advertising for a Trainee so I applied had an interview and I was offered a training contract the next day. Lexi - I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer. My dad was a lawyer so I would go to his office after school and we would have discussions and debates at home. I’m also interested in politics, and law and politics go well together. I actually drew up my first contract when I was six years old because I wanted to negotiate my bed time. Jen, what does a typical day look like for a Trainee Advocate at Appleby? Each day is very different and is very dependent on which department you are in and what matters you are working on. I usually have multiple matters at a time so I have to manage my workload and make

sure I am balancing long term projects with urgent pieces of work. When I was working in the Dispute Resolution team I sat in on meetings with clients and would go to court and take notes for the advocate. In Corporate there are a lot more calls than face to face meetings. I’d say there is no typical day in either department. Jen, how does Corporate work compare to Dispute Resolution? They are very different departments to work in so it allows you to evaluate what you prefer. In Dispute Resolution, there’s a real sense of hustle and bustle and a lot of team work required to help problem solve. In Corporate, it’s more individual but you’re still working as a team. Jen, do you know whether you would prefer to go into Corporate or Dispute Resolution yet? I knew I wanted to go into Corporate Law within the first six months of my training contract. Dispute Resolution was really enjoyable but I preferred the work in Corporate. I think your personality shapes your preferences and I like to be organised. It’s harder to be organised with Dispute Resolution as you have an opposition who can throw anything into the mix at any time whereas in Corporate there is no opposition so you can prepare a lot more in advance. Both are really enjoyable but they are just completely different environments. Lexi, do you specialise in a particular area of law? I specialise in Corporate Law, specifically asset finance. When I first started I did a wide range of work to get experience in lots of areas so I could then make an informed decision about what I would like to specialise in. I also have a particular focus on property finance and aviation law and it’s nice to be able to be able to pick up a range of work if needed. Lexi, what advice would you give to someone considering career opportunities with Appleby? I think it depends on what stage you’re at. If you’re at school then get as much work experience as you can at law firms to get a foot in the door. The Appleby Academy is also a great way to get noticed at an early stage in your career. One of the previous Appleby Academy students will

be starting their training after they finish their LPC next year and that was as a result of the Appleby Academy. Why did you decide to return to the island to commence your training contract? Lexi – I’m Manx and I love the Isle of Man so I always wanted to come back. I loved living in a city but ultimately it was never going to be long term. The island has always been my home. At Appleby we get the best of both worlds as we get to work with all the Magic Circle law firms and get good, interesting pieces of work but we still have a work-life balance. At Appleby, you get an amazing range of work whilst still being able to have a social life. Jen – I loved living in the UK and didn’t want to leave but this was prior to having work experience at Appleby. Appleby showed me that I could have both a social life and get fantastic job satisfaction. If I lived in the UK and wanted to work for a Magic Circle law firm then I could have good job satisfaction but I wouldn’t be able to have a social life. UK firms also have a huge amount of competition for training contracts. Is it true that lawyers work particularly long hours? Lexi - It’s not a 9-5 job. You might sometimes work longer hours than a high street firm but you do have a work-life balance. Jen - You can still have a life a work-life balance here. If you enjoy the work and you want to progress then it’s a huge payoff. Whenever we stay late, our Partners will always check-in to see where they can help. You’re respected at Appleby whether you’re a Trainee or a Partner. What do you enjoy most about working for Appleby? Lexi - For me I love the work itself. I’m never clock-watching, the people are so nice and the social events are great fun. Jen – Everyone is so supportive and we have a real open door policy. As a Trainee, you’re trying to learn so much and it’s such a steep learning curve but everyone looks out for you. To have that level of support makes Appleby such a great place to work. We have a friendly working environment which gives you space to grow and thrive.

Ambitious Assets Interview with Farah Ballands, Group Chief Executive Officer, Ocorian

38

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

Words By Julia Hunt

A

mbition, agility, and collaboration are three powerful words. But when spoken by the new Group Chief Executive of a major global financial services firm, the words have even greater impact. With over $260 billion of assets under administration following its recent merger with Estera, Ocorian is now the seventh largest corporate, funds, and trusts business in the world by revenue. It employs over 1,250 professionals in 20 jurisdictions and manages more than 17,000 structures for 8,000 clients. It’s therefore appropriate that the individual running all this, Farah Ballands, embodies all the values without even thinking about it. She has been agile throughout her career, moving through roles with the business as it grew and developed. She understands collaboration, working with teams and setting up programmes to share the benefits of success with all who have participated. And she is clearly very ambitious. “We live the values as a business, and they drive our success.” Farah said. “They are all important but if you don’t have ambition you don’t have a goal to aspire to. You can be collaborative but if you don’t have a goal you are chatting about nothing. And while agility is important for running a nimble business where decisions can be made quickly and painlessly, it is still all down to your drive to achieve a goal.” Farah began her career as a lawyer, working with Mourant, then with Appleby, where she became Partner in 2003. From 2006 Farah led the firm’s global fiduciary practice, heading the MBO (Management Buy Out) in 2016 with Bridgepoint to create Estera. And just as Bridgepoint asked Farah to lead Estera, the firm’s new private equity owners, Inflexion, asked Farah to remain as CEO for the whole group. “Estera and Ocorian were a very good fit.” Farah said. “Together we operate in 20 jurisdictions and there are only three where there is overlap: Jersey, Luxembourg, and Mauritius. This means there will

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

be some role duplication, however, we are strengthening our presence in these jurisdictions and amplifying our business growth as a result. We have ambitious growth aspirations and want to target new clients and do more M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions). Everything is driven by our client focus – we offer the services clients tell us they want, in jurisdictions where they want them.” Although Farah qualified as an English Barrister and became a member of the Jersey Law Society, she moved into administration early on and specialised in the implementation and administration of corporate employee benefit arrangements. When Estera was formed she created a scheme so employees at the time could invest in the business and share in its success. “You can never forget being a lawyer. It was a great training for running a business like this – you are always aware of the legal implications and pay attention to the details. I haven’t ended up here through a big plan, though. It has been an iterative process through the evolution of the businesses I have worked with. My career path has been that of the businesses. I never set out to be a CEO, I just love this business and love leading this business.” Farah may not be motivated by titles, but she is driven by a passion for what she does, and a desire to do it very well. The number of awards Farah has received over the years give a small indication of how well. These include: WealthBriefing’s European Awards, Women in Wealth Management, Citywealth Power Women Awards, Citywealth Leaders List, and Private Client Practitioner’s Top 50 Most Influential List. “You need to care about what you do to do it well.” Farah said. “And I’m very fortunate that I have a passion for what I do, and I’m driven by wanting the business to do well. At school and at university I was always focused on getting the best results. I love success. I love achieving success. And I love people participating in the success of the business.” Despite running a global business, Farah, who has two teenage children, manages to keep decent hours – usually working in the office from 8.30am to 6.30pm, then picking up calls and emails from other time zones as required. She modestly describes a typical day as speaking to a lot of people, solving problems, and drinking a lot of tea. “I like people and I love talking to people.” Farah explains. “I’m quite calm and try to be fair – not making judgements. It’s about getting the right result for the collective if a business is to succeed.” Looking at Ocorian’s team page, Farah appears to be the only woman in the top 15 positions, however, during our time in the offices, we only spot one man! “Gender doesn’t really play a big role for me. Maybe I’ve been lucky during my career, or perhaps I’ve been surrounded by good men, but I honestly haven’t had to fight, I have had people pushing me.

“You need to care about what you do to do it well.”

“Administration has a lot of women in it and I always think you should look beyond the words spoken. A woman may be more reticent so you should look at the actions rather than waiting for someone to ask for something. “Some people can be quite shy about voicing their ambition. This can change as we get older and more confident. However, for the business, it’s about being ambitious for the collective, and with that, your actions can speak louder than your words.” Farah may have started out in a profession in Jersey, but she has ended up an entrepreneur … bringing the discipline of her training and early career into an international business. “If I were to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change what I’ve done. And if I were to give any advice to people starting their career, I’d probably say the same – get the best qualifications and experience you can while remaining open to learning, and open to opportunities. Ultimately, don’t worry about what people think but invest in yourself, and keep persevering.”

“I was looking for a professional photographer who could capture my passion for my business. I had heard friends who had used Shan for family photos and were super happy with her. Those photos at my home are my favourites. It felt very personal and Shan guided me in an amazing way. She also helped with styling and the whole concept around it which I was very impressed by. The photos I like the most are from my house. She made everything look so natural and professional. I wanted the feeling of an interior magazine but not too much and she definitely totally understood what I was asking for. She also captured a few with my family which I love. I have used my photos on my website which I just released and are super happy with. I use a lot in social media and presentations I do for companies etc. I have so many nice photos that I can use for years ahead. Shan is such a talent and a passionate Photographer. I was amazed by the result and I will definitely work with her again.” Interior Designer / Project Manager Maria Bondegreen - Scandi Interior By Maja

“I have been following Shan on Facebook for a couple of years because I really like her work. I also knew a few people who had worked with her and she came highly recommended, so when I was advised by my PR agency to have some branding images taken for my website I knew immediately that I wanted Shan to take the photos. Her style appealed to me as it’s simple, natural and elegant, extremely professional and of the highest quality. This was exactly what I was looking for. Shan’s attention to detail, her perfectionism and desire to create a beautiful aesthetic means that when it comes to this type of photography you’re in the best hands. I’ve been a fan of Shan’s work for a while and so my favourite part of the shoot was meeting her. A photoshoot can be nerve-wracking and stressful but Shan made me feel comfortable and confident so I very quickly got over my initial nerves and I had fun.” Designer / Founder Sally Russel - Russel Russel

Graham Jones, has more than 30 years’ experience, has been promoted to Production and Training Manager. Stephen Kelly, who has more than 20 years’ experience, has been promoted to Engineering Manager. Peter Callow takes over as Manx Telecom’s Head of Wholesale

T

here has been a changing of the guard at Manx Telecom following the appointment of Peter Callow to Head of Wholesale. Peter takes over the role from Graham Shimmin, who retired exactly 40 years to the day after starting work as an apprentice with the company on December 3, 1979. Formerly Commercial Operations Director at Manx Telecom’s business incubator Vannin Ventures, Peter started his own career at Manx Telecom in 1996 in the Marketing Department and since then has performed a number of commercial roles in the company covering roaming, interconnect and wholesale. Between 2010 and 2016 Peter was Head of Wholesale and Regulation. In 2016 Peter and Tom Meageen, Vannin Ventures’ Chief Executive Officer, established Manx Telecom’s business incubator to identify new business opportunities in the telecom tech sector and to bring innovative products and services to market. Commenting on his appointment Peter said he was looking forward to developing the work that Graham had started, particularly on the roll out of FTTP (Fibre To The Premises). “Making fibre widely available on the Island is a major engineering, technical, and

42

logistical challenge but the roll-out to date has been very successful and is one of the highlights of Graham’s tenure,” he said. “By the end of 2019 Manx Telecom made fibre available to more than 20% of Isle of Man homes and businesses – that means coverage here is approximately two and a half times better than in the UK where, according to the most recent Ofcom statistics, only eight % of homes and business have access to fibre. “Increasing coverage to the rest of the Island is a key objective for the company and as the Isle of Man moves forward with its National Broadband plan, there are exciting times ahead for telecommunications on the Island.” Marking Graham Shimmin’s retirement, Gary Lamb, Manx Telecom CEO, paid tribute to Peter’s predecessor, who joined the company when it was operated as part of British Telecom’s Liverpool region. Gary reflected that Graham had overseen a number of transformational projects, including the move from electromechanical telephone exchanges to electronic systems and the introduction of digital technology to the network. He was the first person to make a mobile phone call over the Manx Telecom network and helped launch the Island’s first dial-up internet services, the @manx.net email platform, and MTTV, the Island’s first online video news service. “Forty years of loyal service to one business is a remarkable achievement,” said Gary. “I would like

to extend huge thanks to Graham for his magnificent contribution. Graham is one of those people who are passionate about what they do, and without doubt he has played a significant role in enabling Manx Telecom to become a successful company.”

I have visited wineries on several occasions over the years, but always earlier in the year, when most of the work was going on outside in the vineyards, while the wineries were quiet. On this occasion the grapes had just been harvested a few weeks earlier. It was a hive of activity and pungent aromas of grapes filled the air. Huge tanks were filled and were in different stages of fermentation. The Grenache grapes had ripened and were picked a week earlier than the Syrah grapes. Whilst one vat was having the skins removed from the juice, another was being warmed up. The different grapes are fermented separately and the blending took place after the vinification process.

BLENDED WINES THE ART OF MIXING TWO OR MORE GRAPE TYPES IS A TIME-HONOURED TECHNIQUE, USED FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS. Many of the World’s greatest wines, like those from Bordeaux, Champagne and The Rhône Valley are blends of the local grape varieties. In Bordeaux the red grapes of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc dominate and produce stunning wines. A few years ago, a young colleague who was new to the wine trade was studying the label on the back of a bottle. The bottle was from Bordeaux and it consisted of the three main grapes. This confused my colleague and he simply asked me, ‘why would they not produce three wines with three different flavours, rather than mixing them together?’ A very good question! I replied that while single varieties can be very enjoyable, they can also be a bit one dimensional. My colleague looked perplexed, so I decided on relating it alongside a football analogy… Manchester City had been playing the previous night and had impressed me. I brought this to his attention by saying that no football team would ever win anything

54

if all their players were too similar. A mix of different talents is required. For instance, David Silva is a small skilful midfielder, similar to that of a Merlot grape, which added subtlety along with softness to the wine, but a little light weight on its own. Vincent Kompany, a big strong defender was the epitome of the Cabernet Franc grape, which added structure and back bone to the wine, but too tough on its own. Sergio Aguero with his fast pace and goals is like the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. The explosion of the blackcurrants can be a bit too fruity on its own. Mix them all together and what have you got? A team of all the talents, a wine of great complexity and depth. A great wine maker is like a great football manager, tinkering with the ingredients until you find the perfect blend. My colleague smiled and nodded. He understood! As a guest of Boutinot Wines last October, I was very lucky to visit a winery in Cairanne, a small village in The Southern Rhône. The main grape varieties in this region are Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

On the final afternoon, after completing the usual vineyard walks, visits to the bottling line and barrel shed, we were told we were going to be blending our own bottle of wine. Once in the tasting room (that resembled more of a science lab) an air of nervousness arose. We were given multiple pieces of equipment; a litre and 10cl test tube, a glass, wine bucket, pen and paper and three bottles of wine; an unoaked Grenache, unoaked Syrah and an oak aged Mourvèdre. After thirty minutes of mixing and working out percentages, we had to each settle on our own final blend. My final blend was comprised of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% oaked Mourvèdre. All starting with the same ingredients the final results varied tremendously, due to personal taste and preference. My chosen blend was judged best in the class and I had the honour of my wine being bottled first with the winemaker. A touch of sulphur was added to keep the wine stable due to the air contact. I was pointed in the direction of an old-fashioned corking machine and the closure was put in my first bottle of Côtes du Rhône. After many years of taking corks out I have now experienced putting a cork in! It was truly a fascinating experience and whilst my experiment took only thirty-minutes, this practice could take a winemaker several weeks to agonise over the final blend. The science, skill and passion that I witnessed is one of the factors that sets the smaller and/or family owned wineries and independent winemakers apart from the mass-produced products and we are proud to continue to support those local businesses who dedicate their lives to producing the great quality wine that they do. Later this year we are hoping to replicate something similar and host a blending session at The Wine Cellar with one of our key partners from the UK. RECIPE TO TRY AT HOME

Ingredients (serves six) n 6tbsp olive oil n 2 onions, finely chopped n 2 aubergines, cut into 2.5cm cubes n 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped n 1/2tsp fennel seeds n 2 bay leaves n A pinch of chilli flakes n 200ml red wine n 2 x 400g tins beluga lentils, drained and rinsed n 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes n Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method 1. In a large frying pan, heat two tablespoons of the oil, add the onions and soften over a low heat for about 10-15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, in another frying pan, heat the remaining oil, add the aubergines and a pinch of salt, then fry on high for five to 10 minutes, stirring often until the aubergine cubes are golden. Set aside.

Meat-free, simply and you can serve it with whatever you fancy A warming ragu is perfect for winter - and you can knock this veggie one, from Lola Milne’s Take One Tin, up in no time. “When I was growing up, my aunty Sophie often made a big pan of tomatoey lentils when we went round. This version is a nod to a traditional Italian meat ragu, but I have added soft aubergine instead and served with soft polenta and wilted greens,” says Milne. Here’s how to make Lola Milne’s tomato, lentil and aubergine ragu... BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

3. By this point, the onions should be soft and tinged golden. Add the garlic, fennel seeds, bay leaves and chilli flakes. Fry for a further two to three minutes, then tip in the wine. Bring to the boil and boil until it has reduced by two-thirds in volume (this shouldn’t take more than five minutes). 4. Last but not least, add the lentils, tomatoes and the browned aubergine cubes. Season and reduce the heat, then simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce has thickened a little and the aubergine is buttery soft. 5. Just before serving, fish out the bay leaves. This ragu is great with soft polenta, pasta or served simply with a hunk of bread. Take One Tin by Lola Milne, photography by Lizzie Mayson, is published by Kyle Books, priced £14.99.

5 WINTER COCKTAILS BLENDED TO WARM THE COCKLES AND TOAST THE END OF FEBRUARY A SUREFIRE WAY TO FIRE UP THE TASTE BUDS DURING A COLD SNAP IS TO RUSTLE UP A CHEEKY COCKTAIL.

WARMING NOTES OF A HOT TODDY, OR A CRAFTY CONCOCTION TO STIR THE SENSES, THESE WINNING RECIPES ARE WORTH SHINING UP YOUR COCKTAIL KIT...

WHETHER IT’S THE COMFORTING,

4. CIROC Winter Warmer Smooth and pure, CIROC Vodka doesn’t miss a step when its infused with everyone’s favourite wintry flavours, such as sweet honey, spicy nutmeg and fresh cinnamon. This cocktail will give you sweet, spice, and everything nice. Ingredients: 40ml CIROC, 10ml Cointreau, 10ml honey, 15ml lemon juice, grounded nutmeg, mint and cinnamon stick for garnish. Method: Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the ingredients, shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass over ice and garnish with nutmeg, mint and cinnamon stick.

2. Santa Teresa Aragua Old Fashioned The simplest cocktails can sometimes be the trickiest to make - all that muddling can be a faff. For a tasty, stirred down twist, swap whiskey for

1. Aerolite Lyndsay Hot Toddy A deliciously peaty single malt from the Isle of Islay, Aerolite Lyndsay 10 Year Old (£44.95, 70cl, Master of Malt) is matured in bourbon and Spanish oak quarter casks, and we love its bold and complex character. Smoky with a honeyed sweetness and a trace of salted toffee, a dash of water will increase its maritime aromas, but Aerolite Lyndsay also makes a wonderful hot toddy. Ingredients: 40ml Aerolite Lyndsay, 20ml lemon juice, 10ml honey water (1:1), cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg. Method: Add whisky, honey water, lemon juice to a toddy glass. Add a pinch of nutmeg and stir in. Top with hot water and garnish with a clovestudded lemon slice and a stick of cinnamon.

56

an aged rum such as Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum, sugar cubes for syrup and reach for high quality bitters - we suggest The Bitter Truth Chocolate Bitters. Ingredients: 50ml Santa Teresa 1796, 7.5ml brown sugar syrup, 3 drops chocolate bitters. Method: Fill a rocks glass with ice, add the ingredients, stir well and garnish with with orange zest or chocolatecoated coffee beans.

3. Smoky Casa Margarita Margaritas aren’t just for summer, especially with the A-list Casamigos Mezcal, whose smoky flavours play well with the citrus elements of the classic margarita served with a flamed orange peel. 5. Copper Dog Boulvardier Famed for being bitter, boozy and sweet, the Boulvardier is packed with flavour and there’s enough body to this drink to warm your insides. This version balances the wonderful taste of a negroni (with whisky in place of gin) with spicy and honey notes from Copper Dog Blended Malt Scotch Whisky.. Can be enjoyed as a strong aperitif or as a digestif.

Ingredients: 50ml Casamigos Mezcal, 25ml fresh lime juice, 12ml agave nectar, two dashes of orange bitters. Method: Half fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the ingredients, shake vigorously, strain into a rocks glass over ice and garnish with a flamed orange peel.

Ingredients: 45ml Copper Dog, 30ml sweet vermouth, 30ml Campari, cherry to garnish. Method: Half fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the ingredients, stir slowly and strain into a chilled martini glass, garnish with a cherry.

“What should you do if you’re chased by a swimming pig?” she reads deadpan, coffee in hand, without a glance away from the page.

As the tour boat approaches ‘Pig Island’, our guide MJ insists it was the work of a local farmer, who thought its water hole and ample vegetation made it a perfect place to plump up his livestock.

Kerri’s query conjures a somewhat alarming prospect. I’m in the Bahamas ostensibly to brush up on a flagging golf game at Sandals Emerald Bay resort; not flee the trotters of an enraged waterborne hog. Thankfully, she moves swiftly to the guidebook’s recommended answer. It transpires the world-renowned swimming pigs who’ve made an uninhabited Bahamian island their home are not aggressive pursuers; they’re just not very good at stopping.

58

As they’ve only been at it for around 15 years (swimming, that is), I suppose evolution hasn’t yet had a chance to equip them with physiology more suited to the amphibious lifestyle they’ve unexpectedly embraced. There are several local legends as to how a small group of pigs ended up on Big Major Cay, one of around 360 islands that make up the idyllic Exumas region of the Bahamas.

The engine noise rouses the resident 20 pigs and piglets from their midday sunbathe. Snorting loudly, they trot down to shore and start paddling out toward us. “The pigs were smart,” MJ continues. “They learned to swim and saved themselves. No one’s going to eat those pigs now.” And he’s right. The swimming pigs have become a tourism sensation in recent years, drawing thousands of visitors keen to tick off what has become a surprise ‘bucket list’ experience.

“We call him Kung Fu Panda,” MJ shouts, a bucket of vegetables under his arm as he wades between the inquisitive stingrays gliding around our feet. He’s pointing at a hefty black and white chap who’s chugging at pace in my direction. “Watch out - he’s a kicker!” Luckily, I avoid a kick from the pig named after a panda. He instead halts his momentum by clumsily bumping his snout into my stomach. A couple of carrots and an obligatory selfie later and he’s off again, paddling unsteadily towards his next foodbearing human buffer stop. Sandals Emerald Bay

Swimming with the pigs is the highlight of a packed afternoon trip around the Exumas with Island Routes tours - a rollick that also includes reef snorkelling; peaking at the island homes of the rich and famous; and a stop at a beach populated by hundreds of endangered Bahamian Rock iguanas.

And our plan, swimming with pigs aside, revolves around golf and relaxation.

around the world - the Fyre Festival.

Not that Rich Gibson goes in for much relaxation on the range.

“That’s where it was, over there,” he says, pointing to a non-descript strip of concrete on the other side of Sandals’ marina.

The veteran golf pro at Sandals’ championship Greg Norman-designed course, delights in keeping his students on their toes.

The disastrous music party has become a byword for how not to stage an event, in no small part due to two coruscating TV documentaries on the debacle.

“Imagine you’re swinging at the girl who stole your lunch money at school,” he jokes, employing another colourful metaphor to urge Kerri to hit the ball harder.

Announced in a blaze of publicity and promoted by an array of supermodels and social media influencers (the launch video even starred the swimming pigs), Fyre Festival turned out of be one giant flop.

My wife’s a complete novice and I’m seriously out of practice. Swimming pigs of Big Major Cay in the Exumas

It comes midway through our week on Great Exuma, the largest of the Exumas. Our home is a fabulous beach-side house at Sandals’ acclaimed all-inclusive resort, which sits like a jewel on the mile-long stretch of unspoiled sand that wraps around Emerald Bay.

Gibby, as he’s known to the sun-seeking golfers who come back to play this spectacular ocean-front course year after year, tailors our block of lessons accordingly. “Why are you lying to me?” he demands with faux outrage, as Kerri pings a drive 150 yards down the middle. “A beginner? You’re no beginner?” His disarming manner makes learning fun and explains the popularity of his coaching programme. “I guess this is the best job in the world,” he concedes as he joins us at the end of a lesson to play a few holes on a course that hosts a PGA tour-sanctioned tournament every January. Watching the boats bob in the azure sea around the rocky outcrop that cradles the 13th green, I find it hard to argue. But not everything in Great Exuma’s recent past has been plain sailing.

Rich rolls his eyes as I enquire about an infamous episode that made headlines

Fans who shelled out thousands on the promise of the world’s best acts, luxury villa accommodation and gourmet dining arrived in April 2017 to discover the reality was a scattering of damp tents, prepacked sandwiches and a mass pull-out of the billed stars. Jeremy Mutton, the English-born general manager of Sandals Emerald Bay, is relieved he trusted his gut and resisted multiple approaches to participate in the event. Despite the shambles, he believes the festival’s notoriety may ultimately benefit the Exumas.

“It has shown a whole new generation of people just how beautiful this place is,” he explains as we chat back at the hotel. Great Exuma is indeed stunning, but the island’s character is arguably just as compelling as its setting - doors lie unlocked, there are no fast food outlets, just one main road, and there’s never been any need for traffic lights. “I describe it as an innocence,” says Jeremy, highlighting what he considers the defining feature of the Exumas.

luxuriant spa and well-equipped gym, and even the services of a team of attentive butlers if desired - you can easily find reason never to step foot outside Sandals’ real estate. But Sunday afternoon served up a persuasive exception, when a short boat trip took us to nearby Stocking Island and the charming Chat ‘n Chill - a rustic and lively beach restaurant famed for its Bahamian roast and conch salad. Our time at Sandals comes weeks before Christmas - a day when the resort hosts around 70 orphans, flown to the island by Bahamas Air pilots who volunteer their time to give some of the country’s most needy children an unforgettable experience. That we spot several guests helping to wrap presents ahead of the big day speaks to a sense of community the hotel aims to unobtrusively foster.

“Back home, we lost that years ago. I hope it’s never lost here - it’s that innocence that’s so special.” Sandals bought its property on Great Exuma a decade ago, with the aim of combining that innocence with its own brand of understated opulence. With around a dozen restaurants, six bars, a huge zero-entry pool, tennis courts, a

Like the resort’s weekly guest trips to read to local school children, it’s an initiative of the Sandals Foundation - the philanthropic arm of the company that only months earlier was involved in the emergency relief response to one of the worst natural disasters in the Bahamas’ history. Hurricane Dorian devastated several islands in September, including Abaco and Grand Bahama.

Though it was the strongest tropical cyclone to ever hit the Bahamas, most of its 700 islands escaped unscathed, including the Exumas. The destruction was confined to the northern tip of a country that spans 500 miles of ocean. While rebuilding is now the priority in the areas pummelled by Dorian, for the rest of this tourism-reliant nation there is an understandable desire to get the message out that paradise still awaits. And await it does - nowhere more so than in the Exumas.

How to plan your trip... A seven-night all-inclusive stay for two at Sandals Emerald Bay Golf, Tennis and Spa Resort (sandals.co.uk; 0800 597 0002) in a Beach House Luxury Club Level Room costs from £2,160 per person. Price includes return economy flights from London Heathrow and resort transfers. Price is valid for travel on select dates between August 31 and October 18. Golf lessons per couple are $60/£46 for 30 mins and $100/£76 for an hour. Green fees for two rounds of golf are complimentary for guests staying at the resort. Guests staying for seven nights or more get free green fees for multiple rounds of golf.

The Swimming with Pigs half day adventure with Island Routes is priced from £158 per person. It can be booked via the Sandals UK website or via the call centre 0800 742 742. Further information on the Exumas visit bahamas.com/uk.

BEAUTY

CAN A REVERSE-AIR DRYER DELIVER GLOSSY, HEALTHY HAIR FASTER? Sophie Goodall tries out innovative beauty tool, the RevAir. Blow-drying is essential if you want glossy locks, whether curly or straight, however, too much heat can damage your hair in no time, so is there a better alternative? The RevAir promises smooth tresses at a lower temperature, thanks to innovative technology, but at £359 - is it really worth splashing out on? HOW DOES THE REVAIR WORK? The RevAir is a reverse air hairdryer. Basically, you feed your hair into a long hose, and the dryer uses ‘reverse air suction technology’ to suck the moisture out.

However, after using the RevAir, my mane was immediately soft, smooth and sleek. The only issue I had was I couldn’t tip my head upside down, blast my roots and tousle my ‘do for volume.

So, instead of blasting hot air at your tresses, it essentially hoovers them. Sounds daunting, but it’s said to be faster, and use less heat and energy than a standard hairdryer. IS IT DIFFICULT TO SET UP? Assembling the RevAir is pretty straightforward. Unlike a normal, handheld hairdryer, it consists of a base unit which attaches to a long a tube with a wand at the other end. I’m not going to lie, it looks a LOT like a vacuum cleaner, and my boyfriend asked what that ‘Ghostbusters contraption’ was. It is a bit bulky, but comes with loads of additional goodies, including hair ties, sturdy sectioning grips, a soft velour turban, a product spray bottle and a handy storage bag. There’s a temperature setting on the wand for high, low and cold blast - but even high only feels lukewarm compared to my usual hairdryer. There’s also a speed control on the base unit, meaning all hair types are catered for. Higher speeds are suitable for curly hair, but it’s advised you start off slow to begin with, to prevent knotting. My hair is thick and wavy and sits just below my shoulders, so I decide to start off with a low heat and a slow speed.

62

If you like beachy waves or a textured style, the RevAir may not be for you. However, for sleek and straight styles, it’s perfect. Sophie’s hair before (left) and after using the RevAir Reverse Air Dryer HOW DO YOU USE THE REVAIR? Trying the RevAir for the first time was a bit tricky, but I soon got the hang of it. I began by inserting a three-inch section of hair into the wand, getting as close to the root as possible, and switching the power on. I kept each section of hair in the wand for about 30 seconds, which I found was perfect drying time.

I didn’t need to grab the straighteners, as my hair was set into a really nice style just using the machine’s cool temperature - and the shine is unparalleled. The results lasted for several days, and the general health of my hair seems to be improving the more I use the dryer. One thing’s for sure: the RevAir may be pricey, but it works. RevAir Reverse Air Dryer, £359, is available from Myrevair.co.uk.

It took about 12 sections to get my full head dry - I would recommend sectioning off the dried parts, so you don’t go back over them. Lifting the heavy tube to get to the hair on top of your head and around the back is tiring to begin with, but with practise, you learn to tip and position your head around the wand. RevAir: The verdict After using my normal hairdryer, my hair is usually quite frizzy, static and full of volume. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

An Innovative Concept Blending Retail with Online Home Kandi offer a unique bespoke concept in design and interior lifestyle products & services. Home Kandi was founded by Scott Duckworth in February 2018, we caught up with him and the team at the retail store in Tynwald Mills and asked what makes Home Kandi different. Scott explained: “We want Isle of Man residents to understand our concept in more detail. We don’t feel we are just a ‘furniture retailer’. We live in a world where technology is so accessible and can be used not only to price compare but also offers so much choice. This is something we are extremely aware of and this underpins our business model and key objectives. First and foremost, we don’t want to be like everyone else. We don’t have huge retail premises, mass amounts of stock and substantial overheads. These are kept to a minimum, so the customer sees the benefit of competitive prices and more importantly, fast delivery as we ship every week. This means most orders can be completed in less than 10 working days! We offer a diverse range of products and services to compliment and enhance the space in people’s home or workplace. But we do it in a modern way. Our new website gives a far-reaching shop window with thousands of products, the ability

to order and pay online as well as build their own personal wish list. Our bright and contemporary showroom gives the customer a feel of what our products look and feel like in person. Our bespoke and customised offerings give much more choice and allow for creative design and unique looks, not just the same ‘off the shelf’ items your next-door neighbour might have and at similar prices too!

“We have substantial and ambitious growth plans and are already in talks to expand the Home Kandi brand and presence into the UK market this summer, with various sites throughout the UK. Our recent move into Tynwald Mills has given us much more exposure to passing trade, something we lacked in our previous location. The response from the Isle of Man public has been extremely positive and given us a real insight into the possibilities of being in a prime shopping location.” Simon Powell, Home Kandi marketing director, said: “Our new E-Commerce website is also giving isle of man residents another online outlet, something no other retailer of similar products on the island has. This completes our ‘hybrid’ business model and concept of having both retail premises and online facilities where customers can shop from the comfort of their home or workplace. With a vast collection of roughly 4,000 products, customers can browse, order, pay and have

the item delivered to their home but still have the reassurance that they are buying from an Isle of Man based company.” Laurence Crookall, Operations manager and the driving force behind the new website build, said: “We have a visionary and unparalleled customer focussed approach to providing the highest quality products at competitive prices. Our key objectives are to supply customers with the best possible experience whether that is online or in store. The Home Kandi team is made up of extremely passionate and dedicated individuals with various skill sets. Many of our services are also complimented by skilled trades people, manufacturers, designers and innovative suppliers. We feel we bring a unique concept to the island and encourage home and business owners to get in touch to discuss their projects.” Settling for nothing short of exceptional, Home Kandi are poised to have a highly prosperous and successful 2020.

Ollie Lockley Ollie Lockley, 26, is Erika’s partner. He is a Manx-raised distance runner who is also aiming for the Paris Olympics in 2024.

“Erika, Ollie and Matt are all massively talented athletes who deserve all the success they are striving for in their respective fields. It’s our hope that the RL360 Athlete Sponsorship Programme will help give them a significant boost along their path to achieving that success.”

Ollie competed in the Island Games in 2017, where he beat an Olympic athlete on his way to winning gold in the 10,000m. “I ALWAYS THOUGHT OF MY MUSIC AS BEING AN OUTLET,”

MUSICIAN ADAM MELVIN HAS

‘STORIES STILL TO TELL’

NIGHTLIFE

Words: Suzy Holland Images: John Melvin

Local musician Adam Melvin has released his latest EP ‘Stories Still To Tell’ in time for a busy schedule of gigs, the next of which are during the Shennaghys Jiu festival in Ramsey in April. Adam is a well-known face on the Manx music scene and growing up in Kirk Michael and Ramsey he freely admits the Celtic influence on his own song writing. “I grew up with music all around me,” he says, “and my brother Luke and I were always encouraged to play and perform. My Dad taught me to play guitar and even as children we were taken to local gigs and Manx music events.” And this involvement and support continues to this day: Adam’s parents, brother and his wife Steph (a Manx dancer with Ny Fennee whom he met at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in 2009) attend all his gigs.

But even with a background seeped in music, he didn’t plan to make it his career. “When I left school I went to what was then the college to do NVQs in catering which led to what I look back on as some very, let’s say, ‘character building’ jobs in some of the Island’s better known kitchens,” Adam laughs now. But the long hours and the poor pay weren’t for him, and in 2011, aged 22, he decided on a complete change of direction and went to university. Yet again he avoided the obvious path and opted to study Sociology. “I always thought of my music as being an outlet,” he says, “and when I was In Chester, I soon found my way into the local music scene where there were hundreds of open mic nights and opportunities to play including at Alexander’s Jazz Bar, Telford’s Warehouse and many others.” He also recorded his first, self-titled, release at Sandhills Studio in Liverpool. When pressed to name some of his influences, there are some very familiar

CD at his gigs during the Shennaghys Jiu festival. He says that recording with Gyp was a real pleasure: “Although I had all the songs laid down, Gyp was able to add not just percussion and other instruments but also his producing know-how which has made these tracks so much more than me and my guitar.” The Shennaghys Jiu festival in early April takes Adam back to his musical roots. “This local festival has been a regular date on my calendar since I was a kid, and this year I’ll be playing my solo acoustic set, which the organisers have been kind enough to describe as a ‘combination of stripped back acoustic tones and honest vocals’.”

names – the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor – and some less well-known, like Jason Isbell and Tyler Childers. “Childers is one of the new generation of alt-country slash Americana songwriters,” says Adam, “and I was lucky enough to see him play in Manchester a few weeks ago. The threads of Celtic influence wind through the American alt-country and Americana sounds which both inspire and influence my own song writing,” he continues, “but for me, like Childers, it all comes back to the story.” Since returning to the Island in 2014 – and juggling his music with his day job teaching sociology at UCM - Adam has been very busy. His ‘Stay for Good’ won the Manx Radio Singer/Songwriter of the Year competition and he then released a follow-up EP ‘The Forth Sessions’ recorded and produced by his brother Luke. He’s constantly writing and performing and most recently he support Alaskan-born folk singer Kray Van Kirk (described as “What every singer-songwriter should aspire to” by Borderline Folk Club, New York) at Truth in Ramsey during his Isle of Man minitour last October. That came after Adam contacted Kirk on social media: “Twitter gets a bit of a bashing,” Adam laughs, “but sometimes good comes of it and we’re keeping in touch. Who knows, that gig in Ramsey might lead to me travelling over to the US to play with him again!”

Over the years Adam’s played with a number of the best Manx Celtic musicians and shared the bill with the likes of Barrule, Mec Lir, The Mollag Band, Matt Kelly and of course his brother, but his new acoustic set, he says, “is just me, my guitar and my songs.” If you’d like to hear Adam’s music – including the new single ‘What Would You Have Done?’ - you can find tracks on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer and all the usual download sites. Adam is on Facebook (www.facebook. com/adammelvinmusic) and Twitter @ adammelvinmusic. The Shennaghys Jiu Festival website is http://shennaghysjiu. com/ and Adam is playing throughout the weekend - at Ramsey’s hottest new music venue, The Cooil Bar (under the Mitre) on 2 April, Truth (3 April) and outside the Courthouse on 4 April. And fun Kray Van Kirk fact: his song ‘The House About Kirk Michael’ refers to the Isle of Man house his Alaskan wife lived in for a short while as a child. You can hear that track, and others, at www.krayvankirk.com

Adam’s also been back in the studio, this time with Gyp Buggane at Ballagrove Studios and has been drip-feeding his fans with single releases since last September. The most recent was ‘What Would You Have Done?’ released in February and which heralds the ‘Stories Still To Tell’ EP which will be available for download from all the usual music streaming sites and as

TT 2020 will also boast an unbeatable amount of in-depth race analysis from the team of radio pundits and experts. Fans will be able to catch it all live in 2020 by visiting the Fan Park’s Studio Stage, which will host all the live radio shows throughout the fortnight, previewing and reviewing all the day’s action with some of the TT’s biggest stars. There will be more action for bike fans on the big screen too, with some of the most memorable TT races of the past playing out daily as well as nightly live screenings of this year’s TT magazine and highlights shows, courtesy of ITV4. There’s more entertainment back on the Main Stage too, as the live music continues over the weekend of Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June. Boasting a number of prestigious awards and nominations between them, fans will be treated to unmissable performances from festival favourites, Elephant Sessions and William the Conqueror. There’s more for music fans each evening too, with the Studio Stage hosting nightly sets from the TT’s own House DJs. Evan Campbell and all-girl duo Mami Miel will be spinning the best music from the world of disco, house, hip-hop, electro, chart and much more, creating individual and distinctive nights of musical brilliance. IT TAKES A CERTAIN KIND OF PERSON…

When you’re part of a team handling over 6,000 calls a month and as many emails, a job in our Contact Centre is not for those who like a quiet life. With customers in 170 different countries, you never know where the next caller is coming from or what their circumstances are. Whether they need a listening ear or help when a loved one has passed away. It’s not for those who like the same old same old. It takes people like Hayley, who’s been part of the Contact Centre for 20 years. Find out more at www.rl360.com/quality/hayley
