GUNYOUNG KIM
Gunyoung Kim Contemplating inner states of being and the subconscious, Gunyoung Kim is interested the side of humanity that is subtle and spiritual. Through facial expression, gesture, staging, disfigurement, color, and texture, she explores different ways in which emotions contain stories within time and space. Gunyoung compares her work to poetry, in the way that simple sentences are comprised of carefully selected words, yet the logic of a poem relies on the meaning between those words. Like poetry, meaning within her own work may not always be obvious, but can be implied in various ways. Human emotions are so complex that we often do not understand our own emotional states and feelings. This makes us vulnerable and imperfect; this is keeps us questioning the world and our own selves. Gunyoung Kim was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She received her BFA in Ceramics from Kook-Min University in Korea in 2010, and her MFA from The Ohio State University in 2014. After graduate school, Gunyoung landed a ceramics residency at Lawrence Art Center in Lawrence, Kansas. She was later awarded a residency at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT, and was also selected as an emerging artist in the May 2016 issue of Ceramics Monthly.
“I love poetry. Sentences in a poem are simple but not clear and the logic of a poem often relies on the meaning in between the words, rather than the words themselves. Like a poem, my work’s meaning is not always clear, but many things may be implied in different ways. Our reactions to the world we find ourselves in are so multi-layered that we sometimes don’t even understand our own emotional states and feelings. In my work I create ambiguous and subtle emotional cues through small gestures and facial expressions that captures a psychological aspect of our daily encounters. This complexity and ambiguity comes from vulnerability of the human psyche with all its imperfections, and I’m interested in putting these ideas into physical forms emphasizing them through placement and tactile manipulation.”
