The artwork by artist, Junyoung Kang, is a mix of energy and turbulence, giving us the feeling of looking at graffiti. His colorful style and color ranges were influenced by the street pop culture during his childhood in Australia. His first solo exhibition was held in 2006 after he was awarded the grand prize from Icheon International Ceramic Expo that same year. He has been active in the global art scene, particularly in Europe and Asia. The main theme of his art is “Family Love”. He expresses this theme through modern languages and different mediums, covering not only ceramics, but also paint, found objects, mixed media, etc. 작가 강준영의 작품은 변화무쌍하고 에너지가 넘친다. 그래피티를 떠올리게 하는 그의 힘찬 필치와 알록달록한 색감은, 호주에서 보낸 유년 시절, 팝과 스트리트 문화로부터 영향을 받은 것에 기인한다. 그는 2006년 이천 세계 도자 엑스포에서 클레이 올림픽 대상을 수상하고, 같은 해에 첫 개인전을 열며 현재까지 유럽과 아시아 등지에서 활발하게 활동하고 있다. 작품에서 주로 다뤄지는 주제는 가족에 대한 사랑으로, 세 라믹뿐만이 아니라 회화와 오브제, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 현대적 언어로 그의 이야기를 풀어낸다.

권용래
Artist Yong R. Kwon has been working and experimenting with lights since his college years in the 1980s. Recently, he has cemented his position as a global artist and his artwork has been displayed in different countries by private collectors and organizations such as Polen Capital in Boston, Scope Basel in Switzerland, and broadly through Art New York, to name a few. His study on lights started in college with paintings of light reflections in his dark basement studio. It led him to produce a unique “unit”, which reflects light by itself. The units are made by repeatedly bending and hammering stainless steel pieces with an artisan eye and mindset. When these units are gathered together, his artworks finally reveal the physical attraction of light. 권용래는 80년대부터 빛을 활용한 형식실험을 꾸준하게 해오고 있으며, 최근에는 Art New York, Basel Scope 등을 통해 해외의 개인 콜렉터 들에게 소장되기도 하고, 보스톤의 Polen Capital과 같은 기관에 소장되기도 하는 등, 현재는 세계적인 작가의 입지를 굳혀나가고 있다. 서양 화를 전공한 대학시절, 어두컴컴한 지하의 작업실에서 빛의 반사를 회화로 표현해냈던 것을 시작으로 한 그의 빛에 대한 연구는, 단순한 재 현에 그치지 않고 빛을 직접 반사해내는 유닛을 제작하여 작품을 제작하기에 이르렀다. 이러한 유닛들은 마치 수도승이 도를 닦듯이 작가가 직접 스테인리스 조각을 망치로 내리 쪼며 평평한 표면을 구부러뜨리는 작업을 반복하여 만들어낸다.

SANGHOON KIM
김상훈
Sanghoon Kim is a metal artist who uses silver to create bowls and vases. He is also the grand prize winner of the 2018 Silver Triennial and the second prize winner at the 2018 Silver Smith Forum in Germany. He likens his work process, which consists of hammering for a long time, to travel. In his journey, he is accompanied by his own anvils, which are the result of the artist’s own handiwork that feature “lines that rise from the plain”, which can be called the formative feature of his work. The embossed lines create a free and repetitive pattern on the shining flat surface of silver, and these formative elements enable modern beauty to emerge despite the traditional process. 김상훈은 은을 사용하여 그릇과 화병을 만들어내는 금속공예가로, 2018 실버트리엔날레에서 1등상을 받고, 2018 독일 실버스미스 포럼 공 모전에서 2등상을 받는 등, 전 세계가 주목하는 신예작가이다. 그는 오랜 시간에 걸친 망치질로 이루어지는 자신의 작업 과정을 여행에 비유 한다. 이 여행에는 그가 직접 제작한 모루들이 함께하는데, 그의 작품의 조형적 특징이라고도 할 수 있는‘평면에서 돋아 나오는 선’들은 이 러한 작가의 수공예적 노력의 결과물이다. 돋음 새김 된 선들은 은의 빛나는 평면 위에서 자유로우면서도 반복적인 양상을 나타내고, 이러한 조형요소들은 그의 작품이 전통적인 방식으로 제작됨에도 불구하고 현대적 아름다움을 지닐 수 있게 해준다.

Saerom Yoon puts the experience of nature into furniture. The artist had very special memories of nature in the Philippines during his early childhood, and he started to use “acrylic” to express the light in various aspects of the sky and its immaterial space. The straight-lined structure of the furniture is a result of elaborate molding experiments. Through the artist’s handcrafted efforts, especially in the process of applying colors onto acrylic, the furnitures become art objects. His work is now very popular with private collectors around the world. 가구디자이너 윤새롬은 자연에 대한 경험을 가구에 담는다. 어릴 적 필리핀에서 생활했던 작가는, 그 당시 느낀 하늘, 그 비물질적인 공간을 다양한 양상으로 물들이는 빛을 표현하기 위하여 아크릴을 사용한다고 한다. 직선 구조의 가구들은 계산적이고 치밀하게 형성된 조형실험 의 결과물이며, 아크릴 에 색을 입히는 과정에서 수반되는 작가의 수공예적 노력은 관객으로 하여금, 그의 작품을 일상 속의 오브제인 가구 로 인식하기 보다는 예술 작품으로써 느껴지게끔 한다. 이러한 그의 작품들은 세계 곳곳의 개인 콜렉터들에게 소장되며 인기를 끌고 있다.

윤주철
One of the representative ceramists in Korea. whose work is displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Jucheol Yun combines traditional and modern techniques into his artwork. He uses the unique “Cheomjang” (첨장) technique, which he devised himself. The technique is transformed from the traditional Korean ceramic technique, which repeats engobes and drying for a long period. After all the steps, a super-dense, unique, appearance is produced. 전통 기법과 현대 기술을 접목하여 작품활동을 펼치는 윤주철 작가는 영국 런던의 빅토리아 앤 알버 트뮤지엄(Victoria and albert Museum)에 작품이 소장된, 한국을 대표하는 현대 도예가이다. 본인이 직접 연구하여 고안해 낸‘첨장기법’은 한국의 전통 도예기법을 변형시킨 것으로, 표면에 화장토를 덧 바르고 말리기를 오랜 기간 동안 반복하는 기법이다. 이러한 과정을 겪은 그의 작품은 외형적으로 초밀도가 응축된 양상 을 나타내며, 독보적인 작업과정만큼이나 특별한 조형성을 뿜어낸다.

A young and representative Korean artist, Kajin Lee, who majored in Ceramic at Seoul National University, reinterprets the traditional “celadon” with a modern take. She puts weight on the expression of the material properties, and as such, the characteristics of these materials are directly reflected in her work. The richness of the celadon is a result of a complicated process of thickening and layering where the artist blends glazes and shapes them into waterdrops. Currently, she has participated in exhibitions at London Collect and <Korea Now> at Paris Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and has been recognized throughout the world. 서울대학교에서 도예를 전공한 이가진은 전통 청자를 현대적으로 재해석하여 작업활동을 하는 한국의 대표적인 젊은 작가이다. 그는 재료의 물성의 표현에 무게를 두고 작업에 임하며, 이러한 재료들의 특성은 그의 작품들의 완성된 모습에 그대로 반영된다. 청자의 풍부한 양감은 작 가가 빚어낸 물방울 형태의 자기 위에 역시 작가가 직접 배합한 유약을 두껍게 입혀가며 낸 복잡한 과정의 결과물이다. 현재 그는 런던 콜렉 트, 파리 장식미술관의 <Korea Now>전시에 참여하는 등, 활발한 활동을 이어나가며 세계적으로 그 작품세계를 인정받고 있다.

YOON A collaborative artist brand, YOON depicts a minimal dining style by reinterpreting traditional Korean brassware, “Bangjja”, ( 방짜) in a modern way. Yoonjung Lee, a jewelry designer who studied Fine Arts, collaborates with an artisan, Hyung-geun Lee, who was appointed as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Korea. YOON’s dining ware is completed by Myongwook Huh’s “Ottchil” (옻칠; Korea’s traditional way of varnishing with lacquer). Bangjja is only made from an accurate mass of copper and tin alloy, which is repeatedly heated with fire and hammered. It is also called a “Bowl of Life” since it detoxifies the toxic microbes from the food. YOON은 한국 전통 그릇인 방짜유기를 현대적으로 재해석하여 미니멀한 다이닝 스타일을 제안하는 브랜드이다. YOON의 그릇들은 서양화 와 쥬얼리디자인을 전공한 이윤정 디자이너, 무형문화재 이형근 유기장, 그리고 한국 전통기법인 옻칠을 개념적으로 접근하여 작업을 하는 허명욱 작가의 협업으로 탄생된다. 방짜유기는 1200도가 넘는 고온에서 구리와 주석을 섞어 만든 합금을 재료로, 거듭되는 망치질과 반복 적인 열처리로 만든 그릇이다. 식중독균이나 유해 미생물 등을 살균하는 효과가 있어 생명의 그릇이라고도 불린다. 이러한 방짜유기는 보 관이 어렵다는 단점이 있는데, YOON의 작품들은 이를 옻이라는 전통적 재료를 통하여 물리적 한계를 극복한 동시에 예술성을 획득하였다.

A creative and experimental young artist, Yunhee Lee is recognized not only in her home country of South Korea, but also in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Singapore, Hong Kong, and many other countries. She continues her creative work globally, using traditional white porcelain and layers of gold finish to complete the mysterious look of her work. The combination of “skull” and traditional Korean roof tile, “giwa”, arouses international interest. 이윤희는 창조적이고 실험적인 작품세계로 20대의 나이에 이미 한국에서 작가로서 인정받은 것은물 론, 미국, 영국, 프랑스, 싱가포르, 홍콩 등에서 전시회를 가지며 국제적인 활동을 지속해오고 있는 젊은 작가이다. 그는 욕망과 불행, 그리고 이를 극복해나가는 인간의 삶을 스토리 로 구상하고 이를 도자로 성형하고 굽고, 또 그 위에 드로잉을 하고 굽는 과정을 거쳐 작품을 완성한다. 전통적인 하얀 백자 에 신비함과 비 밀스러움을 나타내기 위해 금색을 주로 사용한다. 또한‘해골’과 같은 보편적인 소재와 한국 전통가옥의 지붕을 이루는‘기와’와 같은 한 국의 전통적인 소재들을 아우르며 국제적인 공감을 받아오고 있다.

A ceramist, Eunghan Choi, has experienced more than 150 exhibitions, including five solo exhibitions. He is constantly studying and experimenting with the physical properties of soil — finding materials for ceramics — and as a result, he produces artworks different from other, more common materials. Transforming from a soft and gentle substance to a cold and rigid material, “ceramics” go through a lot of challenges. The physical properties of these materials allow his work to reach yet another visual state. 5회의 도자개인전을 포함하여 150회가 넘는 전시경력을 가지고 있는 최응한의 작업은 여전히 진행 중이다. 그는 도자의 재료인 흙의 물성에 대해 끊임없이 연구하고 실험하고 있으며 그 점토와 유약의 물성을 최대한 살려서 다른 매체와는 차별화된 결과물을 만들어낸다. 도자는 부 드럽고 온순한 물질인 점토를 뜨겁게 달궈 차갑고 경직된 물질로 바꾸는 순간 많은 위험 요소를 동반한다. 이러한 재료의 물리적 특성은 그 의 작업이 또 다른 시각적 상태에 도달할 수 있도록 한다.

Sooyeon Hong is an abstract painter who has silently made her own path toward formative development over the past 10 years. Her artwork is created with an exquisite blend of small amounts of pigments, various kinds of transparent mediums, acrylic paints, and the flow of time. The artist catches the moment of tension and excitement through organic flows.
