Wayne Smith: 5 Short Holidays

Wayne Smith 5 Short Holidays

Gallery 16 is pleased to announce its fourth exhibition with artist Wayne Smith. His exhibition 5 Short Holidays continues his interest in scanner-based imagery, repetitive drawing techniques, and working with found printed matter. The show features ink and pencil drawings, a group of original digital prints and collage works. The show also includes a text-based installation piece that foregrounds his interest in writing/ collecting seemingly random and often humorous titles for nonexistent projects. The title 5 Short Holidays playfully refers to his decision to present work in these various styles. The title is also shared with an EP by Smith’s ongoing music project Aero-Mic’d to be released during the run of the show. Wayne Smith is a visual and sound artist who lives and works in San Francisco. Working in a variety of media including drawing, installation and video, his work has been shown locally and internationally. In 2007, he collaborated with Berlin-based artist D-L Alvarez on a sound and video installation inspired by Joan Didion’s “The White Album” that took place at Derek Eller Gallery, NY. A video installation at Exile Gallery in Berlin, Germany was shown as part of the “Psychometry” exhibition in 2009. In 2004, Smith co-produced and performed on the CD “After Low” with artist Rex Ray, as part of the exhibition “Fascination” at Gallery 16. The CD, a reworking of David Bowie’s “Low” album, featured performances by Matmos and Tom Recchion, among others. Smith is a member of San Francisco’s “Poet’s Theatre”, writing four plays with author Kevin Killian over the past fifteen years .Poet’s Theater has been a vibrant part of the Bay Area arts scene for fifty years. Local writers Kevin Killian (author of many collections of fiction, poetry, and memoir), Lindsey Boldt (author of Overboard and the recently released Tittties for Lindsey), and Sara Wintz (author of Walking Across This Field We Are Focused On This Time Now, just out from Ugly Duckling Presse) will revive classics from those five decades and perform them in the space.

Wayne Smith Gallery 16 Editions Since 1996 Gallery 16 Editions has published a number of large format print editions with artist Wayne Smith. These works all eminate from the artist’s interest in the manipulation and subversion of desktop scanner technology. He employs the optical devices to create a abstract visual record of a activity that undermines the scanners original utiltiy. Smith often uses the scanner as a drum and allows the percussive patterns to be recorded as a visual image. In other works he uses rapid motion over the scanning device to visually record his activity. In the 1996 print Hello/Goodbye, Smith’s hand was waved over the surface of the scanner creating an abstract record of this common human gesture. In Smith’s hands, technology’s utility is subververted, yielding a remarkable visual document of his actions. The resulting digital files are not edited by the artist for visual effect, but instead stand as unaltered interpretations of his actions. As visual form these prints range from hard edge modernist compositions to deceptively organic. The prints often appear to evoke tapestry, weaving or light reflecting on water, yet all the images are born from electronic pulses.

Wayne Smith Souvenir 1996 In 1996 Smith began a series of works that altered imagery from magazine advertising, this project was entitled Souvenir. Fifteen years later, in 2011, the artist revisitsed these works to create an extraordinary hand embellished edition. The suite of 8 prints are all individually hand-worked using various forms of folding, cutting, and metallic ink overpainting. In this suite of prints Smith continues his interest in printed matter, repetitive drawing and the repurposing of advertising. For this edition, Smith creates landscape images culled from magazine advertisments that utilized landscapes as their primary imagery. These ads were altered by the artist with ruled lines and various folding techniques. To create this suite of images, Smith uses various contradictory forces such as the landscape and abstraction, the handmade and the digital, the reductive and the additive.
