FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC), and co-funded by FEDER, under the following terms: Scientific Area: Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Academic background and skills required: The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or similar, with solid knowledge in Climate Dynamics, Modelling of Dynamical Processes and impacts of large scale circulation in climate at the regional scale. We seek preferably individuals with strong background handling large-scale patterns (e.g. ENSO, NAO, PNA, etc) and synoptic scale features (e.g. blockings, cut-off lows, storm-tracks). Experience on mesoscale modelling and good programming skills in FORTRAN, MATLAB, IDL are required. It is an advantage to have knowledge on Extreme Value Theory and a high level of familiarization handling large datasets (e.g. ERA40, NCEP/NCAR or ERA-Interim) as well as output from GCMs. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is essential. Working plan: The main purpose of this fellowship is to assist the team achieving the deliverables defined in the STORMEx project (Mid-Latitude North Atlantic Extreme Storms Variability: Diagnosis, Modelling Dynamical Processes and Related Impacts on Iberia). Thus the candidate will participate in the evaluation of extratropical North Atlantic cyclones in the mid-latitude climate, including its detailed structure and role in moisture transport, and to assess its linkages with extreme events (precipitation and wind) over the Iberia, throughout the last century and in future IPCC scenarios. These will be achieved by performing mesoscale modelling of historic events as well as using simulations from state-of-the-art GCMs. The candidate will also contribute to determine how extreme storms and extreme impacts are associated in Iberia and whether this association will be more prone to occur under different climate states, as well as to conduct risk assessment of meteorological hazards and adverse impacts over western Iberia. Legislation and regulations: The Portuguese law regulating this scholarship is the following: Law No. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources in
2012 and the Research Grants’ Regulation of University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, published in the Diário da República by Dispatch No. 9157/2011 (Series II) of 19 July. Working place: The work will be developed at the School of Sciences and Technology that is based at the University of Trásos-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), under the supervision of Doctor Margarida Lopes Rodrigues Liberato. Duration of the activity: Duration of 6 months (renewable to up to 24 months), supposed to start on May 2013. Salary: The monthly net allowance (free of tax) will be 1495 Euros according to table values of the scholarships awarded directly by the FCT (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The scholarship includes a voluntary social insurance scheme and a work accident insurance. The fellow might benefit from a grant of 750 Euros (per year) for participation in scientific meetings. Selection criteria: Selection and attribution criteria: Candidate’s curriculum vitae with emphasis on prior experience with similar datasets and methods, motivation letter and recommendation letters. Good programming skills constitute an asset as well as the number and quality of peer reviewed publications. The weights are respectively 5, 3 and 2 to apply to marks from 0 to 20.
