Geographic Referendum Informational Forums

Both unserved residents in the geographic referendum area and current Gail Borden Public Library District residents will be asked this question on November 4, 2014.

There will be Spanish translation at the Informational Forum at the Main Library on October 6. For more information, please contact Denise Raleigh at 847-429-5981 or at draleigh@gailborden.info.

If you are a resident not served by Gail Borden Library but living within the geographic referendum area, you should have received a Comp Card in the mail. The card is already activated for you and your family to use online at www.gailborden.info/ compcard and gives you access to Tutor. com, which provides live, real-time help with homework as well as help with college essays, test preparation, career resources and more.

To activate the Comp Card in order to borrow physical materials, visit the Main Library or Rakow Branch with your Comp Card and two pieces of identification.

Due to a generous offer by Hagg Press, the Gail Borden Public Library newsletter will contain an eight-page insert promoting the importance of purchasing locally. The library will be running its Library Card Sign-Up campaign in November to coincide with this special insert. Participants need only select a special discount to run in November for customers who show their library card. Elgin in Transition: How Events in the 1960s and ’70s Shaped the Elgin of Today

Thursday, October 9 7 – 8:30 pm Meadows Community Rooms Former Courier News editor and columnist Mike Bailey will discuss and show photos of Elgin in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Former Elgin City Councilperson Bob Gilliam, the longest serving councilperson in Elgin’s history, will join the discussion.

(In September, the Elgin city hall complex is scheduled to be renamed in Bob Gilliam’s honor.) Mike Bailey’s book, Goodbye Elgin High, a chronicle of growing up in Elgin during the 1960s, will be available for purchase.

Soon to be Famous Illinois Author Joanne Zienty: The Things We Save

Thursday, September 25 7 – 8:30 pm River Room This program will be recorded for a Sun-Times Media Local podcast.

Meet the first winner of this project, an initiative created by Illinois libraries to show the power of libraries. Joanne will discuss her book about a family that falls apart and the struggle to put it back together. Drawings, book sales and signings will take place. Please register.

Mr. Sendak and Dr. Seuss Where the Wild Things Were

Monday, September 15 7 – 8:30pm Elgin Room Find out what happened when Dr. Seuss (Ted Geisel) and Maurice Sendak sat down for a discussion of children’s literature and illustration and their perspectives on the

future of children’s literacy. The host of the discussion was Steven Brezzo, a producer of international exhibits who was working with both authors on an exhibit of original works from Where the Wild Things Are. Mr. Brezzo will discuss that memorable evening in a revealing lecture, recounting the personal and professional relationship between these iconic American authors and illustrators. Please register.

Preschool Teachers’ Workshop: ASQ3 Learning to use Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3

Tuesday, October 14 6:30 – 8:30 pm Meadows Community Rooms Participants will study the Ages and Stages Developmental Screening Tool tool and discuss best practices in how and when to utilize it as well as learn how to calculate age, adjust age for prematurity, complete the tool and score the ASQ3.

The class will discuss interpretation of the tool and when to make referrals. Light refreshments will be served from 6 to 6:30 pm. Registration required.

Hoopla at the Library

The Gail Borden Library Board of Trustees Welcomes Carlos Chavez

Elgin resident Carlos Chavez has been appointed by the board to fill a vacancy through April, 2015. Carlos is a volunteer at the library. He is a prevention specialist and community health educator at Renz Addiction Counseling Center and has served the Elgin community in a volunteer capacity as a former board member of Centro de Información and is a co-founder of the Mexican Organization of Elgin. The board looks forward to working with Carlos.
