Studio 270 on the second floor Sneak Preview for All Ages Sunday, January 16 1:30 – 5 pm Grand Opening Just for Teens in Grades 9 – 12 Monday, January 17 9 am – 9 pm It’s the newest and coolest place for teens to create, geek out, or just hang out and play games in a center designed especially by and for them. Everyone in the community is invited to attend the sneak preview, while the grand opening is for teens. Look for fun entertainment and activities, chances to win prizes and some great surprises!

African-American Visual and Performing Arts: A Unifying Experience Saturday, February 5 2 – 5 pm
Experience dancing, storytelling and art as this annual festival continues its efforts to empower, strengthen and unite. Muntu, the largest African dance company in the country, will perform at 4:15 pm in the Community Rooms. In the Bantu language, “muntu” means the essence of humanity. Through its performance, Muntu strives to create an atmosphere of communal participation, encouraging and inspiring audiences to join in the celebration! No tickets or registration.

The “My Favorite Book” video project that originated at Gail Borden Public Library is back for more fun and prizes! And this year, we’ll welcome entrants from England and Canada. It’s simple to enter: • Make your video two minutes long (or shorter) • Enter as an individual or in a group • Upload your video to YouTube or TeacherTube • Be creative and have fun! You can make your video at home or at the Main Library or Rakow Branch. See Page 2 for more details.

Science Exposition Fermilab’s Mr. Freeze to Kick Off Discovery 2011 Science Exposition Thursday, February 10 7 – 8 pm Community Rooms Please register.
Mr. Freeze is back and better than ever with cryogenics featuring geysers, compressed gas and fascinating particle physics. Get some great ideas and pick up information about the second annual Discovery 2011 Science Expo to be held April 16 at the library, in partnership with School District U-46. Students of all ages from public, private and home schools in the library and U-46 boundaries can participate in this free, nonjudged fair that is sure to stimulate interest in science.

Team up with other kids to make a movie about one of these books: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth, Frindle, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Among the Hidden, The Last Olympian, Babymouse: Queen of the World, or The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. After your team gets tips about planning out your video, use your creativity to write and direct a video that will get other kids excited about your book! Community of Readers For the Love of Books

Bowes Road Tom and Sue Rakow, owners of IHC Construction Companies, LLC, and Honorary Co-Chairs for the 2011 Community of Readers collection, will kick off this program that provides new and gently read books for preschool and grade school children in School District U-46 who may not have home reading materials. Drop-off locations accepting donations during February are at First Community Bank Elgin offices, 165 S. Thursday, January 13 6:30 - 8 pm. Join us for a COMMUNITY CONVERSATION to review the draft document and offer input into the CITY OF ELGIN SUSTAINABILITY MASTER PLAN (SMP). This plan was developed and written by residents who participated in Elgin’s nine sustainability working groups over the last 18 months and is meant to help lead our community forward to create a self sustaining community. As part of the plan, the SMP work groups evaluated current practices and policies to find ways to lessen our environmental footprint and identified opportunities to preserve, minimize and restore our natural resources for future generations to enjoy. The community is encouraged to come and give comments and suggestions about the plan before it is officially presented to the City Council for formal adoption. Offered in partnership with the City of Elgin.
