“In Elementos Alentejanos I am using the language of painting as the architecture for making decisions about placement, color, emphasis and meaning. I created this installation of objects during a recent visit to the Alentejo region of Portugal. I consider it a visual poem about my experience of the surrounding area — the marble quarries, the cork oak trees, the ultramarine blue pigment found on the traditional tile work. Over the past several years my artistic practice has grown to include the context surrounding my paintings. Through sculpture, installation, video and performance, I am delving deeper into the process of my own perception and the meaning of my imagery. My paintings have become “props” within a larger theater of interactions.” Front cover: Elementos Alentejanos, Installation, Dimensions Variable, Aprox. 8’ x 6’

Explore what it means to be a modern figure painter. Expressive color and bold line with unusual depth of space is new and exciting — as well as your focus for this class. Painting from the live model, your aim is to be expressive, not descriptive, of the figure and how it exists in space. Fauvism and Expressionism are discussed, including the artists Matisse, Van Gogh and Modigliani. Invention, exaggeration and color harmony are key elements of this class. Some figure drawing/painting experience is recommended. Oil or acrylic paints.

Paint in a collegiate atmosphere with other working artists and serious students. The four-hour class format provides a solid work session, plus time for peer interaction and discussion. Students work on painting or drawing projects of their own devising, with instructor input and occasional class critique. Stay motivated and engaged with your artistic practice by dedicating time to paint each week. All media and subject matter are welcome.

Cubism is the greatest single aesthetic achievement of the twentieth century and its influence still resonates and informs, being the first abstract style of Modern Art. Most notable was the simultaneous presence of separate points of view creating a new reality in accordance with actual sensual perception we experience in daily life. It created an art not of imitation but of conception and creation. A poetic reconstruction and logical extension of Cézanne, who stressed the difference between reality and painting that, in turn, produced other movements such as Futurism, Suprematism and Abstract Expressionism. $15 partial materials fee payable to instructor. Ecorché (Fr.: “flayed”) is a figure viewed without skin for the purpose of anatomical study and artistic reference. Under the guidance of your instructor and from lectures, reference materials, and live models, build an anatomically precise 3-D model of the human muscular/skeletal system from the bones out. This is a yearlong course; fall focuses on the skeleton with winter and spring devoted to the muscular system. A requisite for the serious figure artist; emerge with a durable reference figure and irreplaceable anatomical expertise. Figure sculpting and anatomy experience recommended, however students with strong experience in long-pose figure drawing may find they have many of the requisite skills. Using watercolor and mixed-media, learn to create colorful, imaginative drawings inspired by everyday life and found images. Explore different emotions each week, learning about basic color concepts and how to use value to evoke a specific mood in drawings. Learn how to make your art tell stories and express emotive energy by skillfully manipulating light and color.

Explore the mechanics of line and mass in 3D space and learn to breathe life into constructions with different tools and materials, testing their properties and their potential along the way. Begin by examining the human face to understand facial features and play with expressions, and move on to the figure in order to learn about proportions and posing characters in concrete situations. Create puppets, paper maché masks and wire and clay figures, adding movement and animation in real time.

Conjure your own unique, anatomically plausible creature from skeleton to skin by rendering a realistic concept creature drawing. Learn to pull inspiration from real skeletons to figure out how each creature moves and functions. After deciphering the creature’s sleeping, eating and leisure postures, flesh it out with textures and create clay models of the fledgling creations. Finally, it’s alive! Debut your creature in a dynamic pose by developing a final large-scale poster-sized drawing to go alongside your 3D model.

Push the boundaries of self-expression by exploring the history and design of graffiti. Since the arrival of graffiti in New York City in the 1970s, the art form has served as a voice for unheard youth. The rich history of graffiti is your guide as you make design decisions and explore the Counter-Culture: Fashion and Style in the American Counter Culture exhibition at BAM with teaching artist Henry Luke. Play with unique color schemes and lettering to create eye-catching visual effects as you draw your unique designs on paper with markers, colored pencils and paint pens.

B ritt Ry nears o n

Explore the patterns and designs created by the hippie generation. Drawing inspiration from this unique aesthetic, learn to create revolutionary art using a wide range of mediums and materials. Learn techniques in sculpture, sewing, collage and fabric dying while making your voice heard through the language of fashion.

November Self-Expression through Fashion

C ar o l ina S i lva

Explore the radical ways young artists used clothes to express themselves. Use paint along with other mediums to investigate the artistic act of self-expression. Explore different mediums and materials to create projects and a fashion collection – one that is evocative of our time and personal interests.

art talk SEEING THROUGH DRAWING: A CHAT WITH GEOFF FLACK Geo Studio, Gage Academy of Art

Thursday, October 8 12:30pm-1:30 pm

For most artists, drawing is a means to an end, or a supplement to their painting or sculpture. For Gage teaching artist Geoff Flack, drawing is an end in itself, and his figure drawings are a sort of visual diary of both creative observation and a variety of media-on-paper techniques. Join us for an enlightening discussion about his choice to draw rather than paint, as well as what lies behind his choices of materials and approaches. Digital images are supplemented by several original drawings on display.

CATCHING YOU BY SURPRISE: THE ART OF ROBERT HARDGRAVE Capitol Cider 818 E Pike St, Seattle, WA 98122

Wednesday, November 11 6:30pm-7:30pm

Robert Hardgrave is one of the Seattle art scene’s best-kept secrets, perhaps partly due to his penchant for continually changing materials and scale, and the impossibility of assigning him to a particular stylistic niche. His stated ambition is to create a body of work where, “ideas, discovery and surprise reign supreme,” and in doing so he skirts the boundaries between realist and abstract, painting, drawing and collage. What all of his work does have in common is energy and drama. Join us at Capitol Cider as we explore the common threads that run through his wildly varied and inventive creations. Create your own block print holiday cards without a press! This three-hour workshop features an introduction to relief printing techniques with rubber blocks and water base inks. The technique is the same as printing with linoleum, but the softer rubber blocks are easier to carve and print without the use of a printing press. Explore the process of planning your print, transferring the image to the block and proofing and printing your design. You are also shown various methods of adding additional color to your print. Botanical themes are a natural for holiday cards: think the traditional holly and berries or evergreens and cones, as well as other possibilities for the imaginative – red and green abound in the botanical world! Come create your own cards in this one-day watercolor workshop, fun and challenging for beginners and more experienced artists alike. Make colorful cards and combine that holiday task with play, paints and your imagination! Students may purchase small amounts of necessary supplies such as paper and paint from the instructor to keep costs down; there is a scanner/printer available at minimal cost for those who wish to make multiples of their creations.

In the Reserved Figure Studios, a group of dedicated artists work from one figure pose throughout the 10-week quarter, with the pose set on the first night. Artists must register before the quarter begins to guarantee an easel space. Wednesday PM
