aming has played a massive part in my life. It drove my interest in tech and, eventually, esports. As a gamer, I have followed how gaming has evolved over time and how technology has been a massive force behind it.

PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X/S, and PC gaming, all vying for ultra-realistic graphics and complex gameplay. But alongside the PCs and consoles, there was another device that had its own gaming revolution — the mobile phone. Mobile games have kept us entertained, from the old Snake game on your Nokia phones, to the days of Cut the Rope, Temple Run, and Angry Birds, to the current score of amazing titles like Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, and esports titles like Mobile Legends and Wild Rift.

In the early Atari days, memory and processing power allowed only limited gameplay. The rise of Nintendo and the 8-bit NES revolutionized home consoles. GameBoy inspired a generation of kids to love games. The arrival of PlayStation and Xbox sparked a new generation of console wars. Now we have the

More powerful and optimized devices One of the primary reasons mobile gaming has amassed a huge following is the rise of more powerful smartphones. In the last couple of years, smartphones have changed. Smartphones are becoming even smarter and more powerful. The newest iPhone 15 Pro Max is capable enough to run console games without any porting whatsoever. Google’s upcoming Pixel 8 Pro is a computing powerhouse with its built-in generative AI models. As the saying goes, “The smartphone within your pocket is exponentially more powerful than the computer NASA used to send the Apollo 11 to the moon.” Smartphone processors have gotten so powerful that the smartphone you had two-three years ago would pale in comparison to the newest generation. At the same time, all that power has also trickled down to reasonably priced devices. You can have a pretty great gaming experience with a smartphone

that’s around PHP12,000 – PHP20,000. Even cheaper smartphones can give you a decent gaming performance, though not all games are optimized for them. Aside from raw power, the improvement of online connectivity has also greatly impacted mobile gaming. As LTE has finally become the standard and 5G rapidly covering the whole country, mobile connectivity is the fastest it has ever been. This fast connection speed has opened the gates for multiplayer gaming on mobile devices unlike ever before. Developers have also taken advantage of faster connectivity speeds to create new games and improve gameplay that fully utilizes the technology. Accessibility of smartphones and games One of the greatest reasons why mobile gaming has gained this much popularity is its accessibility. Based on a Statista report there were more than 80 million smartphone users in the country, with

that number expected to grow even higher in the next couple of years. As I explained earlier, smartphones have also gotten more powerful over the years. While not all smartphones are powerful enough to run all games, many are still capable of running fun and engaging games. Most mobile games have a simple concept and objectives and can be picked up by anyone – Candy Crush, Pokemon Go, are just some examples of simple games that have dominated the mobile gaming space since their release. For the more competitive gamers, there are games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and League of Legends: Wild Rift (more on these later) that offer the same competitive level as that of similar genre PC games. Games like these also typically have shorter match durations than their PC counterparts letting players enjoy more games in the same period. That shorter time is a massive perk for the working Filipino who just wants a quick pick-me-up during his short mid-day breaks.

The contribution and growth of Mobile Esports Another massive contributor to the shift towards mobile gaming is the growth of mobile esports. Mobile esports come in many forms from the various genres of games available. There are shooters like Supercell’s Brawl Stars, Battle Royales like PlayerUnknown’s Battleground Mobile (PUBG: Mobile), and Garena’s Call of Duty: Mobile. However, the most popular are the Massive Online Battle Arenas (MOBAs) such as Mobile Legends, and Wild Rift. Similar to how esports titles have dominated the PC and Console world, mobile esports has become a primary

driving force in mobile gaming’s popularity. Esports have taken the gaming world by storm, with more and more developers following the path of creating competitive games with boundless “replay-ability” on top of a single-story narrative. The age of streaming has also greatly helped the rise of esports and competitive gaming, as many tuned in to watch pro players elevate the games they love. Mobile esports is no different than PC or console esports, most mobile esports titles have PC as their inspiration. That said, they also offer something more than their PC counterparts, and that is a growing user base. Mobile Gaming is one of the fastest-growing competitive scenes in the world. Southeast Asia and China

are the two biggest regions driving the said growth. Mobile esports are on the rise for different reasons. A significant reason is the well-optimized games. Most mobile esports titles are optimized for various phones, even entry-level phones. They are also easily accessible, in the sense that you don’t need to spend money to enjoy the game, and additional purchases are usually mere cosmetics. Finally, there’s the fact that mobile esports are becoming one of the most viewed esports in the world. Based on Esports Charts, an analytics provider especially looking at esports, three of the top five most viewed esports tournaments of all time are

Another reason is what draws them in to play the games in the first place — a fun competitive experience. Many would play mobile games with friends as a bonding experience, others for the thrill it offers, and for some, as a career option. There’s also the fact that for younger players, smartphones are their first gaming device. mobile titles, with Battle Royale Free Fire claiming the top spot with more than 5.4 million peak viewers for their Free Fire World Series Singapore held in 2021. The glory for the most viewed tournament for 2023 is for the Mobile Legends World Championship M4 held last January in Indonesia. It boasts a massive 4.2 million peak viewers and is currently the third most-viewed esports tournament in history according to Esports chart. Beyond the World Championship, Mobile Legends has continued to break viewership records for its regional leagues and expects that the number to continue to rise as it nears the crescendo of its 2023 season. While we don’t have the concrete data and numbers of individual viewers. A

personal look can hopefully suffice as a sample. Visiting the Mobile Legends Pro League–Philippines during its regular season, I saw that the vast majority of viewers were Gen Zs and millennials. Though there were older folk in the crowd, you really can’t say if they were parents of a player or genuine fans. Surprisingly the gender is pretty balanced as well, unlike the early days of esports when it was predominantly male audience – a step in the right direction. What draws audiences to watching esports is varied. Some watch after being influenced by a favorite streamer or influencer. Another reason is what draws them in to play the games in the first place — a fun competitive experience.

I remember what sparked my interest in gaming was the fact that we had a computer at home and a PlayStation console. Later I was fortunate enough to be given a GameBoy Advance, which only boosted my interest in gaming. As mobile games grow, so will a generation of gamers that start with smartphones as their first gaming experience. If we follow that trend, then I can only be excited about what game developers can come up with for our smartphones.

Video Games that Bring Filipino Culture to Life

ideo games are a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural expression. In games such as Assasin’s Creed, Overwatch, The Legend of Zelda, Life is Strange, The Sims, God of War, and many more, we get to learn about different worlds and languages as we learn more about the games themselves. This got me to wondering if there were any games inspired by our Filipino culture. Fueled by this curiosity, I searched scoured google to discover games that reflect the rich culture of the Philippines.

If you are into Philippine mythology, then Sinag is a perfect video game to play. Sinag was one of the grand winners of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) inaugural Computer Games Grant Program. A 1v1 game by Ranida Games, it explores a variety of Philippine mythological characters with different backstories that you learn about when you finish the character’s game section. You’ll also be able to explore popular and fictional locations in the Philippines that make up the game’s backdrop. These include Mayon Volcano, Smart Araneta Coliseum, Bathala Garden, Balete Drive, Maria Cristina Falls, Rice Terraces, Boracay, Binondo, Bohol, and Bathala Ruins.

Another game, Soup Pot, explores Filipino dishes. Players can learn to cook their favorite Filipino dishes, such as, liempo, lumpia, sinigang, pandesal, banana-que, karekare and many more. The game teaches players how to prepare specific dishes step-by-step, but the fun part is that players can also experiment to build creativity and uniqueness into their dishes. In addition to cooking, Soup Pot also features a platform called “cookbook” where players can discover new and different dishes, share their own cooking creations, and even host their own cooking shows. Soup Pot does not just entertain, players also learn more about Filipino cuisine. If you enjoy playing the Cooking Mama game, then you will also love this video game. Soup Pot was developed by Chikon Club, a Filipino game studio. It is currently available on XBOX series X/S and will be available on Steam.

Developed by Makiling InterArts, San Fernando, is a mystery game that showcases the beauty of the past through the art of Fernando Amorsolo. It is a choice-driven narrative that showcases the vibrant landscapes and the rural community of the town and the people. Players play as an anthropologist who is fueled by curiosity and determination to uncover the secrets of San Fernando in order to save the town before it completely disappears. This involves communicating with the townspeople and learning their lifestyle through diving into their culture. The game will be available on Steam, and based on its visuals and storyline, it looks exciting to play. Players can communicate with the people that Fernando Armosolo has painted in his painting. This will surely be interesting for players in different countries because they’ll be able to witness and learn more about the Filipinos and the Philippines.

There are also bits of information on Sinag’s loading screen, which is very educational in creating awareness about Philippine myths. One example is the Tikbalang, a creature of the Philippine underworld and known to be a trickster, toying with people and their senses to lead them astray. Some of the playable characters are Juan, Daragi (Tikbalang), Bathala, Anna Luna (White lady), Amon (Kapre), Bugan (Igorot male warrior), Tala (Igorot female warrior), Mara’t Clara (Mananaggal). Sinag is a fighting game that is both educational and entertaining, while showcasing the folklore of the Philippines. Sinag is available via the Google Play Store, App Store, and Steam.

Overall, video games that bring Filipino culture to life such as Sinag, Soup Pot, and San Fernando are an exciting development for the gaming industry. They can be considered valuable assets that can help people learn about Philippine culture, promote Filipino values, and showcase the beauty and diversity of the Philippines to the world. Games made by Filipinos can make an important contribution to the gaming discussion in Asia, showing that Filipino game developers are capable of creating high-quality games that are both culturally relevant and globally appealing.

DITO HOME UNLI 5G WIFI The long pause that was the pandemic made it evident that access to the Internet is crucial for everyday living in the 2020s. Fortunately, there are options, and we’re lucky enough to try. The newest player in the local telco scene, DITO Telecommunity, now offers 5G wireless access with their own HOME postpaid WIFI kit. We’ve had some time to try it, and here’s what we think.

The device is small, at a scant 7x5x3 inches, and lighter than a paperback book of the same size.

DESIGN Firstly, the box. Inside, you’ll find a combination of wireless router and 5G CPE preinstalled with a DITO 5G SIM, an ethernet cable, and the power brick. Our review device came with a simple printed manual, though the final retail version might include different documentation. The device is a ZTE MC888S in white and takes up a pleasantly small amount of space–it’s 7 x 5 x 3 inches or about the size of four video game disc cases placed sideby-side. It has four LAN ports on the back and just 3 LED status indicators in front for 5G signal, WiFi status, and power.

The DITO 5G home WiFi kit comes bundled with the 5G modem/router, so an additional purchases isn’t needed.

HARDWARE The MC888S CPE is a combination WiFi router and modem, so there’s no need to connect a separate device to get wireless access. Additionally, it can broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals for broad device compatibility. It also supports WiFi 6 for scorchingly fast connectivity on devices that support the standard. The micro SIM card slot rests at the bottom of the unit and along the side you’ll find a micro USB port for firmware updates and a reset button. There’s also a WPS button on the top edge for easy WiFi setup.

Inside the box, you get the fairly compact router, a short ethernet cable, and a wall adapter. The SIM card comes pre-installed in the router.

DITO Home Unli 5G WiFi

5G connectivity is ready for everything but the fastest competitive games.

USER EXPERIENCE After everything was plugged in and waiting for the router to finish its initial connection to the network, I logged in to the surprisingly helpful admin page. Aside from the usual data monitor, SMS access, and WiFi security controls, there’s also a handy feature that tells you how good the reception is where you placed the unit, along with a visual guide as to where the best and worst places are to put the device in your home. I queued up a few 4K videos on YouTube, all of which played smoothly with absolutely no issues. The same went for all the other streaming services. Netflix, in particular, went so well that I was sidetracked for longer than I care to admit watching a show on the TV, which I had previously connected to the DITO modem. This was still the case even with three devices streaming HD content at the same time. Having more than proven itself in the entertainment front, I decided to use the connection for work. I had several meetings queued up for the day across Zoom, Google Meet, and Discord, and all my meetings concluded with no lag, stuttering, or drops! This is something I’d hadn’t been able to achieve while tethering from my phone, and it’s nice to know DITO can deliver a connection stable enough on which to have online meetings. October 2023

Secondly, since it’s a 5G connection, you’ll have to find a spot that has a strong signal. This might take some time doing, and there’s no way to find out how good the signal will be at a given spot in your home without trying. Once you’ve gotten that though, the connection is strong, steady, and reliable. For the price, speed, and reliability, DITO Home’s 5G Postpaid WiFi offering is one that I think you’d be more than happy with.

SPECIFICATIONS

The DITO website has a constantly updated list of areas with 5G and 4G service, so check back frequently if your home isn’t already covered.

DITO has made the requirements for signing up for either plan extremely easy. They require nothing more than a single valid ID, and proof of billing, which can be anything from a utility bill to a certificate of residence from your barangay. There are a few more details on the DITO website, but their requirements are the easiest to accomplish among all the home postpaid offerings I’ve seen locally. Once you have the documents together, you simply head over to DITO.ph, search for the DITO Home WiFi Postpaid tab, and click “Apply Now,” after which it’s a quick form, a few uploads, and you can just wait for your device and sim card to be delivered.

VALUE At the time of this writing, DITO offers two postpaid plans for their 5G service.

The first is for unlimited 5G for PHP 1490, though they are currently offering an introductory price of PHP 745 a month for the first six months of your subscription. The other plan comes with a 200GB data cap monthly for PHP 990. Both plans give up to 500+ Mbps speed and rewards points every time you pay your bill. With either plan, you also get 30 days of Prime Video Subscription, which is a nice little bonus. Additionally, the data-capped 200 GB plan has data rollover, so unused data gets carried over to the next month (though not past that). Overall, I’m quite impressed with DITO’s 5G offering. The connection was stable throughout my testing period, and more than adequately fast for most users’ needs, all with a single wireless device. Because it relies on 5G connectivity, it would be best to check the DITO website to make sure your area has DITO 5G coverage before you make the jump. If your area is on the list, this is a solid option for convenient wireless internet connectivity. So, is the DITO Home 5G WiFi ready for primetime? I think so, with a few caveats. The first, of course, is that your area needs 5G coverage. The list isn’t as long as other carriers at the moment, but they’re constantly rolling out 5G connectivity to more and more places.

While I’ve long put competitive gaming aside, I was able to play a few titles online with no problems. Fallout 76, Ready or Not, and Remnant 2 are admittedly not extremely sensitive to latency, but as far as I can tell, you should have a reasonably pain-free experience on everything but the twitchiest of titles, at which point, a wired connection would better serve you.

HARDWARE Storage is one of the plus factors of the HONOR 90 Lite 5G. It has a built-in large storage capacity of 256GB with 8GB RAM that can expand to an additional 5GB, powered by HONOR RAM Turbo. This may be why it does not need a microSD expansion slot. It is capable of handling most demanding tasks such as saving files, downloading music albums, videos, as well as app and mobile upgrades. I did have to keep a watchful eye on my storage use, as upgrades from mobile apps and taking a lot of photos and videos can eat up a lot of memory space. The best option is to connect your Gallery to a cloud storage service such as Google Photos for backup.

The HONOR 90 Lite 5G is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 6020, a mid-range processor that is capable of running most mobile games at medium to high settings such as Mobile Legends and League of Legends: Wild Rift. However, the processor is not powerful enough to run some of the most demanding games at their highest settings, such as Honkai: Star Rail. But it is a good choice for players who don’t expect to do any extreme gaming. Running on MagicOS 7.1 based on Android 13, the HONOR 90 Lite 5G lets you watch videos, play games, and use other apps at the same time. It has a 4500mAh Super Battery, which means you spend less time worrying about running out of battery and have more time to enjoy all of the features that the HONOR 90 Lite 5G has to offer.

On the photography front, HONOR 90 Lite 5G has a 100MP main camera with a wide f/19 aperture. This allows me to capture a lot of light, even in low-light conditions. Night photos come out well, brightening up the subjects with quality that is good enough to flex on social media. The main camera of HONOR 90 Lite 5G can also scan documents in the camera’s “more” options, with the scanned image brightened up to be more readable. The 16MP front camera is able to generate color-balanced and well-lit selfies, particularly when taken with proper lighting. The HONOR 90 Lite 5G has its own video editing studio called “create” in the

gallery. Similar to CapCut, this feature allows you to edit videos for social media without having to download and learn a separate app. It also allows you to share and transfer files to any HONOR device. Note though, that taking videos is limited to 30fps, lower than the usual 60fps used for recording events.

vivo’s been on a roll lately with its releases, from the entry-level Y27, to the budget midrange Y36. Now, they have released the vivo V29 5G, a premium midrange offering that takes over the slot of the vivo V27 5G released earlier this year. We’ve spent around two weeks with the phone and we daresay it’s a worthy successor. Read on for our thoughts. October 2023

DESIGN For my personal devices, I like keeping the aesthetics somewhere along the minimalist black and white scale. That being said, the vivo V29 review unit we got in a Starry Purple colorway is something I will have no problem adding to my everyday carry. The top-to-bottom purple gradient has an eye-catching wave and glitter effect that becomes more prominent when hit by light. The camera island also does not take too much away from the design with its integrated glittery finish. The topmost module is the wide-angle camera and directly below it is the main shooter. feel nicer in-hand is its solid build which features glass on both the front and rear. The body is also IP54 dust and waterresistant. Overall, the vivo V29 both looks and feels premium, with the added peace of mind of a durable body.

HARDWARE At the heart of the vivo V29 is a midrange octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G, with four cores each running at 2.4GHz and 1.8GHz, and an Adreno 642L GPU. This is paired with 12GB of RAM as a standard across all pricing variants, and either 256GB or 512GB of nonexpandable storage. The 2021-released processor may already have some years under its name, but it will still be a fast, reliable performer across the board. While the card tray does not have space for a microSD card (it only has slots for back-to-back dual nano-SIM cards), the 256GB storage option should still prove plenty for most people. However, if you’re a heavy storage user, you may want to consider going for the more sizable and only slightly more expensive 512GB variant.

The top side has a punch hole selfie camera and slim call earpiece, while near the bottom is the in-display fingerprint scanner. A tour around the edges reveals a bare left; the power and volume rockers on the right; microphone pinhole and “Professional Portrait” branding at the top; and the dual nano-SIM card tray,

In the imaging department, the vivo V29 sports a 50MP main shooter with a wide f/1.9 aperture and 1/1.56-inch sensor; an 8MP f/2.2 with 1/1.4-inch sensor ultra-wide secondary camera; 2MP f/2.4 monochrome camera for depth; and a 50MP f/2.0 selfie camera. All cameras are electronic image stabilization (EIS) compatible, with the main shooter made more capable with hardware-based optical image stabilization (OIS). This should result in clearer images when going handheld with slow shutter speeds, as well as more stable in-motion videos. But wait; there’s more! The vivo V29 is equipped with the Aura Light 2.0 module. Originally appearing on the last-

generation vivo V27, the Aura Light is a built-in ring light that functions separately from the traditional flash module. Composed of 4 LED lights (two tuned to cool color temperatures and two tuned to warmer color temperatures), Aura Light 2.0 provides 23 levels of adjustment to provide nice, even, and flattering lighting on your dimly-lit subject. Powering the show is a 4600mAh battery pack which should deliver day-long performance. Combined with the 80W vivo FlashCharge standard which is one of the highest we’ve seen in a premium midrange device, the phone should have very little down time.

For its face, the vivo V29 sports a huge 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a higherthan-most FHD resolution of 2800x1260 px and pixel density of 452 ppi making for a very sharp viewing experience. Color quality is likewise great with the Standard display setting, with a Bright setting if you want your colors to be more vivid in exchange for accuracy, or Pro mode for a duller output perfect for color grading photos and videos. The panel maxes out at a 120Hz refresh rate if you want the smoothest viewing experience possible. For eye care, the phone comes with a better-than-average 2160Hz of PWM dimming, which should lead to less eye strain.

USER EXPERIENCE My over two weeks spent with the vivo V29 was stellar. As a daily driver, it excels in most things you would want and care about. So much so that it’s hard to pick one thing to highlight above the others. Like the back colorway, the vivo V29’s display is lovely to look at. It gets nice and bright even in direct sunlight, and you can tune colors to your preference, whether you like them more muted or more vivid. Viewing media was great and immersive because of the huge display, the curved edges, and the HDR10+ certification providing better colors and contrast in supported video streaming platforms. Though only a single speaker configuration is present for sound, it October 2023

gets acceptably loud and remains decent even on max volume. The display is also nice and responsive thanks to the 1000Hz touch sampling rate, and the up to 120Hz refresh rate is a real visual treat that makes the standard 60Hz setting feel stuttery in comparison. Granted, maxing out the refresh rate leads to less battery life. But if you are just going to be near a power outlet anyway, might as well enjoy the silky smooth experience. For the benchmarks, the vivo V29 scored 2,477 on the 3D Mark Wild Life test and 9,245 on the PCMark Work 3.0 benchmark. In real-world use, the vivo V29 was able to handle all the games we threw at it. Demanding titles such as Genshin Impact, Diablo Immortal, NBA 2K, and Asphalt 9 were virtually smooth 99% of the time with all graphics settings

maxed out, even with lots of particle effects happening on screen. Online competitive games such as Mobile Legends Bang Bang, Pokemon Unite, and Call of Duty Mobile also had no trouble keeping steadily high frame rates at maximum quality. Of course, the phone does warm up a bit when pushing the CPU and GPU to their limit, but nothing too alarming. Should you need an extra oomph of performance, the phone’s Ultra Game Mode allows the phone to pool compute resources into the game you’re currently playing. The 4600mAh battery combined with the energy-efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G processor powered the vivo V29 for almost 16 hours in the PCMark Work 3.0 battery life test. In everyday use, I found the phone to be able to last up to 9

Meanwhile, the Aura Light 2.0 system really does help with properly illuminating subjects in dark conditions. Compared to a normal flash module which produces flat photos with harsh highlights and shadows, the Aura Light 2.0 is able to provide soft, fill lighting with automatically suggested color temperatures (from white, to warm yellow, all the way to red) based on the detected lighting conditions. Bonus point that it doesn’t blind your subject as what usually happens with traditional flash.

As a shooter, the vivo V29 lives up to the hype of its marketing. The main camera images come out nice and clear, with bright colors that don’t suffer from over-processing. Contrast and dynamic range are both great in scenes with tricky lighting. The wide-angle camera likewise churns out good images, though the details are not as sharp around the edges of the outputs compared to the middle. For low-light scenarios, the vivo V29 is able to pull in plenty of light without sacrificing too much of the details and without introducing too much noise in the postprocessing. As for videos, the vivo V29 is likewise able to produce sharp, detailed, and nicely colored outputs at up to 4K 30fps for both front and rear shooters.

Overall, the vivo V29 is a really great phone that manages to strongly distinguish itself from its equally spec’d competitors with what it offers in the imaging department.

VALUE Selling for PHP 26,999 for the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variant and PHP 24,999 for the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant, the vivo V29 finds itself in an increasingly competitive premium midrange territory. This segment has a number of decent contenders and it takes a lot to be noticed in the busy division. The vivo V29 manages to do exactly that thanks to its reliable performance on all things that matter, with the above-average display pixel density, blazing fast charging, OIS-enabled main shooter, great image processing, and Aura Light 2.0 making it stand out.

hours of screen on time with data always on, 120Hz refresh rate on, and 50% screen brightness across mixed use of social media, gaming, and imaging. The phone is even able to go much longer if the refresh rate is capped at 60Hz. For charging, vivo claims that the V29 is able to charge up to 50% in just 18 minutes using the bundled 80W power brick. We found this to be accurate, and charging the phone to full from 0% took only around 45 minutes— one of the fastest charging times we’ve seen in this segment.

As a final point on imaging, the vivo V29 comes with a camera and camera app that is great for content creation and vlogging. As earlier mentioned, photos and videos come out great for both front and rear cameras. You have wide-angle options for both sides as well, 0.6x on the rear and 0.8x on the front. EIS are also available for both sides (which combines with OIS in the main rear camera), with processing that does not lead to noticeable jitters around the edges. There’s even an in-camera teleprompter feature if you like shooting scripted content!

Originally a mod of the popular first-person shooter (FPS) Half-Life, it became a runaway hit in the early 2000s and continues to be popular to this very day. With Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) dropping on September 27, 2023, people wondered whether it would continue to garner attention with shooter games such as Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite, and more on the scene. Can Counter-Strike 2 capture a whole new generation of gamers?

While not much has changed from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) in terms of gameplay, there are major graphical updates to the game, such as updated textures and light reflections and support for ray-tracing technology. In addition, smokes are volumetric and now interact with the environment, which makes using smoke grenades riskier than in previous installments of the game. Firing bullets and even HE grenades can affect smoke, which changes how players should approach using smoke grenades, as smoke grenade spam can be effectively countered through these tactics.

All weapons and equipment from CS:GO return, in addition to classic game modes such as Bomb Scenario, where the Terrorist team has to plant a bomb at a bomb site, and Counter-Terrorists have to defuse them; Hostage Scenario, where Counter-Terrorists must rescue the hostages from Terrorists; and Wingman, a 2v2 mode in smaller bomb defusal maps. Just want to frag others for bragging rights? Classic Team Deathmatch mode is also available, and future modes will be available in more updates to the game.

As for the maps? Fan favorites such as Dust II and Mirage return, while Italy and Overpass have been completely reworked with the new Source 2 tools and rendering features. At the time of this writing, other fan favorites are in the process of returning, including one of my favorite Hostage Scenario maps, Assault. While no new maps were released with CS2, it is possible that some new maps could make its way into the game in the future. One of the best aspects about Counter-Strike 2 is that it’s free-to-play, but that also means lots and lots of microtransactions. Want that cool skin for your collection? It’s going to cost some money. Before, skins have gone for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on its rarity, but one of the big additions is CS2 Prime, which costs USD15. It gives you access to the ranked queue, Primeexclusive souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases. Buying CS2 Prime has its ups and downs. Just like in any other online game, there can be cheaters who are using multiple accounts, but the chances of encountering them as a CS2 Prime player is drastically lower than in the free version.

Can CS2 take its place in today’s FPS landscape? There is no doubt that there is potential due to Valve’s graphical overhaul of the franchise and the inclusion of new features. However, it will take time for it to catch on. If you’re younger, you might prefer other FPS games, but for millennials who grew up playing the game online and in Internet cafes, CS2 will always be a favorite, although younger players should give the game a try to get a glimpse into the beginnings of online multiplayer FPS games. For me, nothing beats setting up in Dust II at long A with the AWP and picking off enemies one by one.

ollowing the reported high-profile ransomware attack on a national government agency, Kaspersky is recommending some tips for individuals and companies alike on what to do when they’re notified that their data have been exposed.

While the incident is still under investigation, Kaspersky is strongly recommending for concerned Filipinos to take the following 8 steps immediately:

According to experts, ransomware attacks target organizations every 11 seconds, causing USD20 billion in damages globally. This year, a central hospital in Illinois, Chicago in the United States announced its closure partly after suffering from a ransomware attack two years ago.

One

As soon as you realize your data may be compromised, inform the people in your life of what happened so they can avoid possible scams using your identity, and help you report to authorities.

“As always, leaked information in the hands of cyber criminals allows them to impersonate or deploy social engineering scams. With exposed data, hackers can get to you whether online or offline —-they can send you messages, they know where you live, they can steal your identity and make unlawful financial transactions pretending to be you or hold on to your data to sell it for further financial gain,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Check if your email account has been exposed at https://haveibeenpwned.com or https:// monitor.firefox.com/ type in the email address associated with you and you will find out if that address was included in any of the leaked databases that these services are aware of.

The recently targeted agency, which is the state insurer, has more than 104 million Filipinos as members, including those who live outside the country as overseas workers. It means that the agency may have and process various types of personal identifiable information (PII), which can be potentially used to identify, contact, or locate a specific person. The agency also keeps the medical information submitted by its members for claims verifications and payments.

Change the passwords on all your accounts. If there are security questions and answers or PIN codes attached to your account, you should change these too. And use strong passwords. One of our experts shares how to create one here.

Secure your computer and other devices with an antivirus and anti-malware software. If your device is installed with Kaspersky Premium, you can use its Data Leak Checker feature that monitors the internet and the dark web to let you know if your personal data is compromised.

In general, ransomware attacks may end up with the stolen data being put up for sale on the dark web. “Prices on personal and corporate data on the darknet may vary. For example, the average cost for access to a big company’s systems lies between USD2,000 and USD4,000, which is relatively inexpensive compared to the potential damage it could cause targeted businesses. When it comes to personal data, a few years ago our researchers reported that the going rate on the dark web for personal details is USD10 each, selfies (photos) with documents fetch for as high as USD40 to USD60 each, and medical records are sold and bought for as much as USD30 each. It’s crucial that we protect our data because transactions in the dark platform show that it’s not only valuable to us but also to those with malicious intentions,” adds Yeo.

For organizations whose information have been encrypted for ransom, quick and decisive actions are vital. Your response will help determine whether the incident becomes a deadly headache for the company or a feather in your cap.

We can summarize the recovery process 4 steps:

Step 1: Locate and isolate. Determine the extent of the intrusion. Start by looking for infected computers and network segments and immediately isolate them from the rest of the network to limit contamination. If your company doesn’t have many computers, start with antivirus, endpoint detection and response (EDR), and firewall logs. For very limited implementations, physically walk from machine to machine and check them. If we’re talking about lots of computers, analyze the events and logs in the security information and event management (SIEM) system. After isolating infected machines from the network, create disk images of them and leave the machines alone until the investigation is over.

Step 2. Analyze and act. First, see to the security of the rest of the network. Then start the threat-hunting process— analyze the ransomware, figure out how it got in and what groups usually use it. Ransomware doesn’t simply appear; a dropper, Remote Access Trojan (RAT), Trojan loader, or something of that nature installed it.

Step 4. Take preventive measures. A major cyber incident always equals big trouble and prevention is the best cure. Prepare in advance for what go wrong: • Install reliable protection on all network endpoints (including smartphones) • Segment the network and furnish it with wellconfigured firewalls. Better still, use a next-gen firewall (NGFW) or a similar product that automatically receives data about new threats • Look beyond antivirus to powerful threathunting tools • Deploy a SIEM system if you’re a large company for immediate alerts • Train employees in cybersecurity awareness with regular interactive sessions • Deploy Managed Detection and Response service to proactively monitor and detect cyber-threats or cyber-attacks that automated prevention and detection tools may have missed • Deploy Threat Intelligence to understand the adversaries or cyber-criminals who are targeting your organization, business reputation and assets thus providing better cyber-threat mitigation measures • Use Digital Footprint Intelligence services to help security analysts explore an adversary’s view of their company resources and promptly discover the potential attack vectors available to them. This also helps raise awareness about existing threats from cybercriminals in order to adjust your defenses accordingly or take counter and elimination measures timely.

For any cybersecurity breach or attack, you need to perform an incident investigation and response to determine the root cause of an incident and ensure a similar incident will not happen again. If your internal team does not have the skills and experience, engage a qualified 3rd party such as Kaspersky Incident Response Services to provide comprehensive digital forensics and incident response service.

Step 3. Clean up and restore. Turn your attention to the computers that are out of commission. From those that are no longer needed for investigation, format the drives and restore data from the most recent clean backup. If you have no backup copy, decrypt whatever’s on the drives. Start at Kaspersky’s No Ransom website, where a decryptor may already exist for the ransomware you encountered. If it doesn’t, contact your cybersecurity provider for help. In any event, don’t delete the encrypted files. New decryptors appear from time to time and there might be one tomorrow. Regardless of the particulars, don’t pay up. You’d be sponsoring criminal activity and the chances of getting your data decrypted is not high. Apart from blocking your data, ransomware attackers may have stolen it for blackmail purposes. Paying greedy cybercriminals encourages them to ask for more. In general, consider any stolen data public knowledge and be prepared to deal with the leak. Sooner or later, you will have to talk about the incident with employees, shareholders, government agencies and quite possibly journalists. Openness and honesty are important and will be appreciated.

As you step through the recovery process, remember to document all of your actions for transparency in the eyes of both employees and the wider world. Preserve any evidence you can of the ransomware for later efforts to locate any other malicious tools targeting your system. That means saving logs and other traces of malware that may come in handy during later investigation.

Over three quarters of professionals (76%) believe there will be a “significant” change to their jobs next year due to AI.

Professionals in the Philippines think skills like problem-solving (77%), creativity (77%), and communication (76%) will become more important as AI tools become more widely used at work. Make-roscope Wins PH James Dyson Award Young Filipino inventor develops an affordable alternative to a lab microscope with a portable keychain microscope that can magnify organisms up to 400 times

his year’s Philippine national James Dyson Award winner attempts to solve the problem of limited access to STEM resources, by creating Make-roscope, an affordable and portable keychain that converts any smartphone or tablet into a microscope, giving students an easy access to the microscopic world. During the pandemic, Jeremy De Leon was a fresh graduate of Manufacturing Engineering from Mapua University who witnessed how challenging it was for students and teachers to learn and teach biology and life sciences because the school labs were closed. He thought of a special tool that could help teachers and students study science together, even if they could not be in the same classroom.

THE INVENTION De Leon invented the Make-roscope which uses just one special lens to make things appear up to 400 times larger using a smartphone. The exterior of the Make-roscope is made of food-grade silicone, which is waterproof, and can be used almost perpetually. Instead of using gears like a machine, the Make-roscope has flexible arms which the user can bend to make things look clearer. Currently, over 3,000 Filipino students and teachers are using the Make-roscope. “Usually, in a school laboratory, a microscope is shared by around 10 students. With Make-roscope, it’s possible to have one for each student. The child has the freedom to explore and to be curious both inside and outside the classroom,” De Leon says Winning the national leg of the James Dyson Award will inject PHP330,000 into De Leon’s project which he intends to use for further product development. Aside from the actual Make-roscope, De Leon introduced an all-in-one laboratory kit which also includes specimen slides and accessories, such as pipettes, tweezers, and tubes, for users to easily obtain samples. De Leon adds: “Because of the James Dyson Award, we will expand our goal of reaching not just Filipino students, but every student in the world, so they will be engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and we will have more researchers, scientists, engineers, innovators, and especially change makers.” October 2023

aming has been a hobby of mine from childhood. I would argue that the two consoles that made me truly develop an interest in gaming were the Sega Genesis and the Sony PlayStation. However, I will admit the PlayStation wasn’t my first choice when it came to 32-bit consoles. I was eagerly awaiting the Sega Saturn for Christmas but received the Sony PlayStation instead. This was a sign of things to come, as I would go on to collect PlayStation consoles, games, and accessories over the years.

As someone who became enamored with the console, the console did all the right things — utilize cutting-edge technology at a price point that brought the console to all audiences. The mid-90s were a time of transition for the industry. Many of the fifth-generation consoles were switching to CDs, and the PlayStation was no exception. Sony executive Ken Kutaragi, called the “father of the PlayStation,” watched his daughter play games on the Famicom, and believed that the video game console would become the main entertainment system. Kutaragi’s

vision would come true, although there would be a few roadblocks on the way, including a friend-turned-foe relationship with Nintendo.

Sony knew it needed developers, and even used the C programming language through the GNU C compiler to make it more accessible to developers. Kutaragi sought to balance a number of goals that were in opposition to one another: high performance, low cost, and ease of programming for developers. The PlayStation came out in Japan in December 1994, and while sales initially lagged behind the Sega Saturn, it exploded when it came to North America in September 1995 at a price of only USD299 as opposed to the Saturn’s USD399. The Saturn released ahead of the PlayStation in North America, although the Saturn flopped as retailers were not informed about the surprise launch, along with a myriad of other issues such as price points and other failed Sega projects that plagued the company in the mid-1990s.

The project dated back to 1988, when Nintendo and Sony worked on a Super Famicom/SNES CD addon. Conveniently, Nintendo had already contracted Sony to produce the SPC-700 sound processor for the Super Famicom. This CD add-on was called the Play Station while it was in development as Yamaha already trademarked the PlayStation name, but thenSony CEO Nobuyuki Idei acquired the trademark for an undisclosed sum. Sony also had an idea for its own console that would be compatible with the SNES and Sony’s own CD format called the Super Disc. The licensing agreement also gave Sony sole international rights to Super Disc games, and the Play Station would be announced at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. However, thenNintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi nixed the joint Sony-Nintendo project as Sony continued to increase its leverage over Nintendo during development. Nintendo then aligned itself with Philips and ditched Sony just two days before the 1991 CES, including sending then-Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa (who was also Yamauchi’s son-in-law) and chairman Howard Lincoln to Amsterdam to formalize the deal with Philips. Sony and Nintendo formally terminated their partnership in May 1992.

The PlayStation also released in Europe and Australia later in 1995. Sales in North America hit almost 1 million by the end of 1995. By the end of 1996, 400 games were in development for the PlayStation, once again highlighting that game developers were crucial in the console’s success. The marketing campaign was also a home run, especially in North America and Europe. To appeal to young adults, nightclubs in the United Kingdom had rooms dedicated to the PlayStation. Sony even reduced the price of the PlayStation to USD199 in 1996, allowing it to finish off the Saturn and force Sega to launch the Dreamcast in 1998 in Japan, but the PlayStation’s low cost and huge game library were huge selling points despite the Dreamcast’s technical superiority. In fact, Sony announced the development of the PlayStation 2 in 1999, even showing that its graphics processor could rival most supercomputers.

It was said at the time that Sony’s research and development team was far superior to Nintendo’s, as Sony already had experience with numerous home consumer products, namely the Walkman (1979) and Handycam (1985), while Nintendo’s expertise was limited to video game consoles. Nintendo also took a hit in the Japanese business community, as they violated an unwritten law of Japanese companies not turning against each other in favor of foreign companies. Kutaragi presented his proprietary CDROM-based system that included 3D graphics later on in 1992, but could not convince some Sony executives who saw Sega and Nintendo as “toy” manufacturers as opposed to Sony’s reputation as a consumer electronics powerhouse. However, then-Sony president Norio Ohga backed Kutaragi, who reminded him of the failed deal with Nintendo and Nintendo’s betrayal.

The PSone came out in 2000, a smaller version of the PlayStation, which also sold extremely well. In fact, the PlayStation lasted until 2006, which was also the same year that the PlayStation 3 came out. The success of the PlayStation inspired other companies to create their own consoles, namely Microsoft’s Xbox and its successors. Microsoft is seen as Sony’s rival in the console market today. While the PlayStation was the console that solidified my love of gaming, this could also go for the millions and millions of gamers who grew up with one of the PlayStation consoles.

Sony then announced the PlayStation in October 1993, promising 3D-based graphics after Sega’s Virtua Fighter became popular in Japanese arcades. Sony had no experience in game development, so they turned largely to third-party game developers as opposed to Sega and Nintendo’s in-house development teams. Sony gained support from Namco, Konami, and Williams Entertainment, alongside others. Ridge Racer, which was a popular racing arcade game at the time, was confirmed behind closed doors to be a PlayStation launch title.
