Apparently, the wet and windy weather in June and July, the wettest on record, has been blamed on the rather naughty Jet Stream which is normally North of the UK but decided to go on holiday to the South. This of course made it difficult for event organisers including The Machen Show which was cancelled because of the conditions & created some very soggy conditions at various School Fete’s around the Borough.

The Twyn School
The Twyn School and Park Services Help Caerphilly to Grow The Twyn School has been further improving their outdoor environment. The children, their families and friends have been planting, weeding and flower arranging. Working with Caerphilly Parks Services, The Twyn School has made a positive difference to the centre of Caerphilly. The Twyn School always enjoy working with local friends as part of their extended school community. One grandmother and long time friend of the school, Mrs Cath Bowley helps out regularly and has maintained fruit, vegetables, plants and flowers. She commented “My granddaughter Ffion loves planting in our garden; potatoes and all sorts. She is in The Twyn School and since she has moved to the next part of the school. I have really enjoyed continuing to help out with the younger children’s outdoor area.” Mrs Bowley has given so much to The Twyn School…. time, energy and dozens of plants and flowers. Teachers across the school have involved their classes in making the school a more attractive place to learn. Class Teacher and Senior Leader Mrs Liz Latham enthused “Mrs Reid and her Eco Warriors have had a huge impact on our quadrangle and they have brightened it up with planting. Our wheelbarrow in support of fair trade won second place at this years Caerphilly Flower Festival Wheelbarrow Competition” The children really enjoyed getting their hands dirty, digging and getting rid of those nasty weeds. Reception pupil, Megan Hurn from Mrs Bracey’s class said “We have been tidying the outside of the school.

We were finding strawberries and picking up rubbish. I was helping in the garden with Mrs Poole and Mrs Tatnell.” A positive improvement means the children are proud to be playing and learning in this beautiful environment. Local wildlife enthusiast Mrs Marjorie Butcher helps out at the school and has been inspiring the children to make bug boxes. She explained, “I think it is wonderful. It encourages lots of wildlife; butterflies, birds, insects etcetera.” The children have been thinking not just about themselves but others that live and visit Caerphilly. Not only have the children made The Twyn School look attractive, they have also been planting in barrels within Caerphilly Castle. The children are proud to live and go to school next to the largest castle in Wales and wanted to do their bit to make it look beautiful. Area Parks Officer for the Caerphilly Basin, Mr Simon Beacham said “We are grateful to the children of The Twyn School for planting at Caerphilly Castle. The frontage is now a thing of beauty. I think the castle staff were pleased with how it looked.” By the children and people of Caerphilly involving themselves in planting and maintaining our environment it truly make Caerphilly a more attractive place to live. Karate Budokan Caerphilly Club
12 students from Karate Budokan Caerphilly Club represented Wales at the recent Karate Budokan International World Championship held in Cardiff. Teams from India, Australia, Germany, UAE, Scotland, Pakistan, England and Wales came together with over 170 competitors competing in Kata and Kumite. Caerphilly members put in a fantastic effort, bringing home 23 medals – 10 Gold, 8 Silver, and 5 Bronze.

Sensei Paul Wallen, Wales Team Manager, said “it was an honour to have worked with the Welsh Team and members from the Caerphilly Club, who did their Club, instructor and parents proud.” Female Team Kata gold medallists and under 12 boys Kumite team winners were all from the Caerphilly Club. This is a marked improvement from the two students who competed at the Australia 2010 world titles, with the club continuing to grow from strength to strength. This capped off a successful year with members competing and winning medals at regional and national events.

Multicoloured Vitamins I think I may have mentioned a few months back that 2012 was going to be the year of the carrot for me – well now seems a good time for an update. I have really struggled to grow carrots for the last 20 years – probably because the soil around Caerphilly is a bit heavy for them – so I decided this year to take some of my own advice and try growing them in pots … and this is the result Now, they may not be huge. They certainly were not cheap (if you take into account the cost of the seeds and compost) There may not be big enough to feed a whole family for a week BUT! ‘Boy oh boy’ were they sweet?! They were, and still are, an absolute delight to devour. Very few actually made it as far as the cooker – because everyone wanted to eat them raw and freshly picked, including most of my pupils in one of the schools where I work once a week, and that was most satisfying – to know that their perception of what a tasty snack could be,
had been changed, and hopefully their eating habits in the future. So, I am happy to encourage you to ‘have a grow’ too! Anyone can grow tasty young carrots in pots like these – they take about 3 months from sowing to eating, so you may just get a final crop in now if we get a decent Autumn – you often find that the garden centres have their seeds at half price at this time of year so why not try some? Have a look for some of the unusual coloured carrots – they are full of useful vitamins and those much sought after antioxidants, which is perhaps why I tend to look so good all the time?

It’s never too late to start making yourself feel good - both mentally and physically - and summer is a great time get started. Giving a little attention to your diet, exercise and general wellbeing can really benefit your overall health. Diet You don’t have to radically alter your diet as even small changes will benefit you. • Blackberries, blueberries, cranberries and strawberries are all high in antioxidants and fibre, are nutritious and eating great handfuls will fill you up with healthy energy • All melons, but particularly watermelons are mainly water. They’re healthy and a great option if you need something sweet • Courgettes, aubergine, mushrooms, leeks, asparagus, onions, peppers and garlic are all delicious grilled or roasted with a light brush of olive oil. High in nutrition and flavour, low in calories • There are no rules for salads - just put in any vegetables or fruit that you have, such as lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and avocado. Combining different greens or lettuces, such as cos, romaine, Chinese leaf, rocket or watercress make salads more interesting and are cheaper than buying the ready-packaged salads. Add beans, couscous or tabouli for a bit of substance. • Alcohol is high in calories, so reduce this by enjoying a white wine spritzer (50/50 wine with sparkling water) or going for a non-alcohol alternative, such as lemon barley water or lime cordial with sparkling water. Exercise This doesn’t have to mean daily sessions at the gym or long-distance running. The key to weight loss is using up more calories than you’ve eaten, and there are lots of ways you can achieve this: • Walk. Sounds simple - and it is. Start by walking locally three times a week for just 20 minutes. Build up the pace so that you can do the route more quickly and extend the time to 30 minutes by extending your route. If you can fit in four walks a week, or even every day, go for it - you will notice the difference. • Yoga is a great exercise for stretching and toning your muscles without having to break out into sweat. In the summer heat, your muscles are already warm and relaxed. Even better, find a class held outside to enjoy nature along with your session. • If you are exercising in the heat, remember to keep to the shade and wear a hat to protect your head and neck. Wearing sunglasses will protect your eyes and help you
to avoid squinting, causing lines around the eyes. • Gardening is great exercise as you use a wide range of muscles and are constantly moving. Wellbeing We all have to deal with stress at some point and research shows that it’s actually the small things in life (being stuck in a traffic jam, forgetting to pick up the dry cleaning, missing a work deadline etc) that causes more tension and anxiety than the major life events. So, allow yourself some ‘me time’. This simply means doing things just for yourself and just for the pleasure of it. Allowing yourself 20 minutes a day to potter in your garden, read the paper, or even take a nap calms the mind, lowers blood pressure and, just as importantly, gives you a few minutes to just ‘be’. More recent research shows that we don’t necessarily need eight hours sleep. Many of us can exist quite happily on less but what’s important is the quality of your sleep rather than the quantity. Try to stick to a routine, even with the lighter summer nights, winding down and avoiding alcohol too late in the evening. If your room gets too warm, fans are a great way to cool the temperature and their low hum will help you drift off to sleep.

Hi everyone, Our summer events programme is now in full swing, as I write there are only a few days left until The Big Cheese, so fingers crossed the weather stayed sunny and everyone had a fantastic time! To keep you occupied throughout the summer holidays, many of Caerphilly County Borough’s visitor attractions have events going on… here’s a few in August to whet your appetite: • Llancaiach Fawr have a number of activity days on Wednesday’s throughout August (8th, 15th & 22nd 11am-4pm) these include fun and games days with lots of activities including crafts, bouncy castle’s, storytelling and games. Entrance into the Manor House is £7 per adult and £5.50 per child to which includes the activities or alternatively activities only are £4.25 per child with adults going free. • The Winding House is running a number of events including also has a Film Club every Sunday at 2pm (booking essential), and a ‘Month of Fun Days’ which run every Thursday 2-4pm, all events are FREE, to book for the Film Club call 01443 822666 or for more info visit: www.windinghouse.co.uk • Cwmcarn Forest has various activities including Toy Bag Decorating (11th), Hedgehog Meet & Greet (12th) and Junior Rangers every Wednesday through August (8th, 15th & 22nd). The next event for your calendar is BBC Cymru Wales Proms in the Park, which returns to bring spell binding magic to the Owain Glyndwr Fields on Saturday the 8th September. We are once again excited to be collaborating with BBC Cymru Wales to pull out all the stops to ensure this year’s event is a truly magnificent evening, where Caerphilly will be proudly showcased to the whole of the UK. Thought for the Month
As I write, I am 36,000 feet above Switzerland; my face pressed against the aeroplane window, mesmerised by the amazing sights of a setting sun and twinkling lights in the sleepy alpine villages below. Underneath those awesome and beautiful mountains, in some sort of huge underground laboratory some very brainy and persistent scientists have been busy discovering what they call ‘The god particle’… I am not sure what that means to be honest. But what I do know is that people are much more than just particles. While we were on holiday I enjoyed watching people from the comfort of my sunbed and parasol. Young couples, perhaps ‘newlyweds’, so marvellously in love; young children screaming and laughing among the waves and fish in the crystal clear sea; locals using their sense of humour and ingenuity to get our attention and perhaps a few of our Euros. Tasting all the delightful fruits, fish dishes and fancy cocktails. Smelling the heavy scent of summer jasmine, the Mediterranean herbs, and that delicious smell of coconut flavoured suntan lotion – it was a heady mixture even for my nose – put all those things together with a bit of blue sky and I feel great, I relax and have a semi permanent smile - it is all coming back to me as I type, even the dopey grin!
What’s my point? Particles don’t have personalities … atoms don’t feel amorous … dust doesn’t have dreams and molecules don’t have pleasant memories. The book of Genesis tells us that somehow GOD took dust and made us, each one amazing and unique people – in his own image i.e. with character, feelings, the ability to choose and to relate to each other – and that is what makes you and me, and our lives, special – isn’t it? PS I have nothing against particles – they’re quite useful too!

500g fresh cherries, pitted and cut in to half 50g soft brown sugar 150ml red wine
8 amaretti biscuits 3 large egg whites 150g golden caster sugar

• Preheat the oven to 220°C/ gas mark 7. Place the cherries in a pan with the brown sugar and red wine. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes until soft. • Spoon the cherries in to 4 large ramekins. Roughly crumble the amaretti biscuits onto the top, dividing them equally. • In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites to a stiff peak. Start adding the sugar gradually, whisking all the time until the meringue is glossy. Spoon onto the top of the cherries. • Bake for 5-8 minutes until the meringue is golden. Serve with nothing else but a chilled glass of dessert wine or a generous glass of cassis.
