KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sometimes it’s not a heroic action that catches a customer’s attention but the consistent delivery of security coverage. At HCA Brookside-Research Medical Facility in Kansas City, G4S Custom Protection Officer (CPO) Nate Owens was complimented and recognized multiple times for his professionalism, willingness to assist and his ability to build a rapport with the nursing staff and the team. “He is always friendly and professional and stays aware of what is going on in the Emergency Department,” said HCA Security Director Bill Ludwig. “He sets the example for others to emulate. It was a pleasure to recognize him for the accolades he brought to the security department and the G4S staff.”

G4S USO Prevents Bike Theft

G4S USO Lauren Taylor

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. — It takes a team effort to ensure that a client’s site is properly secured. In Philadelphia, the combination of G4S USO Lauren Taylor and a member of the building custodial staff prevented the theft of a bike belonging to a building employee. While standing post in Philadelphia, USO Taylor saw a man attempting to steal a bicycle. Taylor immediately approached the man to make sure that the bike was not stolen but the man ran off on foot. Taylor then notified a building employee of the man, who was able to track down the individual and stop him before he got away.

BOSTON, Mass. — You never know when a normal day standing post can take a sudden turn. As Bank Protection Officer (BPO) Daniel Eden stood post in Boston, he saw a man inside a local bank lying unconscious. When he approached the man, he realized he didn’t have a pulse. Immediately, BPO Eden called 9-1-1 and notified emergency services of the situation. As EMTs were sent to the scene, Eden followed the directions provided by the dispatcher to administer medical assistance. EMT’s arrived shortly after and were able to transport the individual to a local hospital.

G4S Security Officer Santana Gray

MILWAUKEE,Wis. — If not for the impressive awareness and bravery of G4S Security Officer Santana Gray, a normal day in Milwaukee could have took a terrible turn. While standing post at a local bank, SO Gray noticed a man approach the bank entrance with a hood over his head and a silver mask over his face. Immediately, SO Gray began yelling at the man that he could not enter the bank, causing him to run from the building. SO Gray locked the doors and called 9-1-1 while advising the bank employees of the incident. When Milwaukee police arrived, they commended SO Gray for her actions, saying that she likely prevented a serious crime. A big congratulations to SO Gray for her alertness and understanding of the situation and for ensuring the safety of the bank and its patrons.

G4S Safety

Recognizing Heat Exposure It is estimated that approximately 620 people die every year in the United States from extreme heat exposure, leading to approximately 65,000 emergency room visits. We are able to control our internal body temperature by sweating, but when our bodies are unable to properly cool themselves to maintain the core body temperature, we can suffer heat-related illnesses. Degrees of Seriousness There are three levels of heat-related illnesses: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. How to Prevent Heat Illness and Heat Stroke: • Drink plenty of fluids • Replace salt and minerals - heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from your body. You can replace it with sports beverages • Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen • Schedule outdoor activities when the sun is not at its peak Heat Cramps Heat cramps usually affect people who sweat a lot. This depletes the amount of salt and moisture in the body which can cause cramping.

Heat Exhaustion Heat exhaustion is a milder form of heatrelated illness and usually occurs after prolonged exposure to heat and / or heavy exercise in the heat, resulting in increased loss of body fluids through heavy sweating.

Heat Stroke Heat stroke is potentially life threatening and occurs when the body is so overwhelmed by the heat and humidity that it loses the capacity to sweat. The body’s temperature rises rapidly which can cause brain damage and even lead to death.

What to do: • Stop all activity • Loosen tight clothing • Gently stretch the cramping muscle • Drink clear juice or a sports beverage • Do not return to strenuous activity

What to do: • Remove almost all clothing • Apply cold packs or ice to neck, groin and arm pits • Cover body with a wet sheet and direct a fan onto the sheet if possible to increase air circulation • If symptoms last longer than one hour or worsen, seek immediate medical attention

What to do: • Get to a shady area • Cool the body rapidly using whatever methods you can • Monitor the body temperature and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101-102 degrees • Do not give the individual fluids • Get medical assistance as soon as possible

To get additional safety information on heat exhaustion and heat safety, visit http://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-toprepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/heat-wave-safety. To get additional safety information, contact your local office or send an email to safety@usa.g4s.com.

G4S Veterans Spotlight

Riding For A Cause

Since 1991, Paul Bullard has committed himself and his bike to raise funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS

P

aul Bullard had just wrapped up a career in the U.S. Army as a Communications Specialist and was beginning the search for his next job. The last eight years of his life had been spent at various locations across the globe, with stops in Germany and Korea for three years, providing communications for most everything the military did. Growing up he had always had a fascination with serving his country, especially considering his dad served in the U.S. Navy. But now with that stage of his life over, he wasn’t 100 percent sure what to do next. In his role with the Army, he was constantly speaking over the airwaves, and had someone mention to him that he had a voice for radio. So when he settled down back in the states, he went for it, beginning his career as a radio DJ personality. Then in 1998, around seven years into his radio career and working in Washington D.C., his friend brought up a unique opportunity. At first, Bullard didn’t know what his friend, ChiChi Egbuna, was talking about. He knew ChiChi was an avid cyclist, but when he brought up the idea of doing a 330-mile bike ride from North Carolina to Washington, D.C., he wasn’t sure if he was serious. “When he first approached me about doing the ride, my first impression would be like anyone else, ‘You’re crazy!’ but he talked me into it. I stopped driving to work and just rode my bike for training, about a 25-mile bike ride. Once I started training, I was all in. Plus, I am an Army vet, so you know I’m not backing down from any challenge.” Bullard began researching the bike ride, Washington D.C. AIDS Ride, a four-day trek from North Carolina to D.C. that raised funds to help research for those who had contracted HIV and AIDS. When he realized who would be benefiting, Bullard jumped at the opportunity. “One of the things as a radio personality, you want to be able to use your voice to promote a cause and it helps to give back to the community. You can give a voice to something that typically doesn’t have a voice. [The ride] was a challenge. It was undercover then, no one wanted to talk about AIDS and HIV. It was a win-win for me. I

love to cycle, but I had never cycled like that.” Bullard has been heavily involved ever since the first ride. He has taken part in rides from Boston to New York City, in Texas and even riding from Dallas to New York City on the one-year anniversary of 9/11. In June, Bullard embarked on his third journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles with AIDS / Life Cycle. The seven-day, 545-mile ride helps raise awareness and funds to those living with AIDS and HIV, typically drawing more than 3,000 riders and personnel. The ride takes a year to prepare for to ensure that your legs are strong and prepared for the various stages of the ride. “The California ride is the Mamba ride of AIDS rides; it’s the biggest one they have. On top of that, when I got married in 2002, I got my wife into cycling. We did the ride in 2002 for the first time; that was our honeymoon.” Despite logging thousands of miles in his lifetime, Bullard, currently a G4S G4S’ Paul Bullard during his first ride in 1998 en route to Washington Security Officer in D.C. In June, he embarked on his third 545-mile bike ride in California, Dallas, keeps coming raising funds and awareness for AIDS and HIV. back. “It’s how I was raised and it’s just the right thing to do. I have lost family and friends to AIDS, but that is not the reason why I do it. I love cycling and love helping others, so it’s a win-win.There are people still suffering from AIDS and they still need help. It’s not only my duty as a G4S Security Officer to help others, it’s my moral obligation. Plus, you’re never wrong doing the right thing.”

Training and Development

Campaign to Change Direction Training available to learn more about mental health

In May, G4S launched the Campaign to Change Direction, working to transform the culture and break the negative stigma that surrounds mental health. G4S is committed to supporting a healthy workplace that promotes open communication and encouraging our employees to take the pledge to know the Five Signs of Emotional Suffering. The Campaign to Change Direction aims to transform the culture surrounding mental health by encouraging and empowering us to acknowledge the emotional well-being of ourselves and others, and reach out for necessary care and resources. While many of us are comfortable acknowledging and obtaining help for our physical suffering, we are much less likely to address our mental suffering due to a negative stigma that creates feelings of guilt, shame or embarrassment. The G4S North America Training Institute (NATI) has made the pledge, information about the five signs and Campaign to Change Direction and additional training available on G4Su. To take the pledge, learn healthy habits of emotional well-being or find help or support, you can visit https://g4s.exceedlms.com/student/enrollments/create_enrollment_from_token/64ivJCVfMYA4F5wEqic6WFf5. For additional information, visit the Campaign to Change Direction website at www.changedirection.org. Here you can access videos, find national and local resources, learn about the campaign and get additional information on the campaign. Mental Health Awareness

Ensuring Mental Well-Being

Resources to help with mental health May was recognized nationally as Mental Health Awareness Month, but G4S is committed to ensuring the emotional and physical well-being of our employees each and every day. One in five adults are diagnosed with a mental disorder every year, yet only half will end up seeking treatment due to the negative stigma surrounding mental health issues. This stigma causes individuals to feel ashamed and embarrassed, leading to isolation and loneliness. You don’t have to be a mental health professional to help someone with a mental health issue. We all have the power to make a difference and transform the negative stigma of mental health into support by learning how to identify struggles, encourage open communication and create a healthy environment with appropriate resources. Someone who is struggling with a mental health issue may exhibit changes in behavior such as: decreased performance, tiredness, increased absenteeism and poor interactions with others. If you recognize that someone in your life may be struggling emotionally, the first step is reaching out: connect, listen without judgment, inspire hope and offer help. Show compassion and caring and extend a willingness to find the appropriate resources for help. Maintain a healthy workplace environment by engaging with employees on a regular basis through conversations, appraisals and meetings where employees can feel empowered to openly express themselves. Local and national resources including hot lines, websites and support programs are also available. Ways to Get Help: • Contact G4S Secure Solutions (USA)’s Resources for Living • Call: (866) 486-4334 Visit: www.resourcesforliving.com • Username: G4S Password: eap4u Professionals Who Can Help • Speak with your doctor if you think you may have a mental health concern or health issue • For career direction, speak to a professional career counselor or human resources expert and create a career plan • If you’d like to repair relationships with loved ones and friends, talk to a counseling expert and work through any potential issues • For financial challenges, contact a financial planner or debt advisor If you or a loved one is struggling with mental health issues or having suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255.
