ANTIAGING MEDICAL AND LASER CLINIC

ASK DR. FRAME Dr. Gidon Frame has 25 years of medical experience and has become one of BC’s top aesthetic physicians since he and his wife, Nadine established the Anti-Aging practice 14 years ago. Dr. Frame is certified by the American Board of Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM) and the North American Menopause Society (NAMS). He also teaches medical students as Clinical Assistant Professor for the UBC Department of Family Practice.

What is the best way to get rid of these lines between my brows? My kids say I always look angry, even when I’m not. Dr. Frame: Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are all neuromodulators that relax muscles. They achieve a cosmetic effect by reducing the production of wrinkles and works well for prevention too. Dysport is similar to Botox and does an excellent job at softening lines that are formed by repeated muscle movement in areas such as crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead wrinkles. Our goal is not to just “fill you up” but rather to customize the exact amount and placement of the injections needed for your face. We don’t want to use more than you need so that we still allow for the untreated areas to freely show facial expressions.

Everything on my face seems to be dropping, my eyelids, my cheeks and I’m getting jowls... HELP! Dr. Frame: Not to worry, we’ve got solutions. To help with the natural sagging of the face and eyes, we can first start with the skin tightening, Thermage. It’s a no-downtime, radiofrequency energy treatment that ‘kick starts’ the body’s own natural renewal process. Then, we address the cheeks with hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane and Perlane to rebuild the structure of the cheekbones and help straighten the jawline so jowls are softened.

I have a mixture of brown marks and divots from acne scarring. Is there anything that can help both of these issues? Dr. Frame: Yes, the Fraxel Dual has 2 lasers in one. The 1550 wavelength resurfaces the skin on a deeper level for smoothing which reduces the appearance of acne scars, surgery scars and stretch marks. The 1927 side of the laser removes most spots, and even lightens difficult melasma. Anti-Aging Medical & Laser Clinic is devoted to healthy, beautiful aging - looking your best and enjoying optimal health. This means non-surgical aesthetic improvements, wellness medicine and hormone optimization in a friendly, professional, modern clinic. The team are passionate about making everyone comfortable and addressing their individual needs. HEALTH CARE ON THE HOME FRONT How much do you know about home health care? You might be aware that, after a serious illness, surgery or an accident, people may use services such as nursing and personal care at home to assist in the recovery process. What may surprise you is the breadth of services available today, and home care’s increasing role in Canada’s health care system. In fact, many of our most vulnerable citizens can keep living independently in their communities because they have support from home health care professionals.

BAYSHORE HEALTHCARE

According to the Canadian Home Care Association, “Home care is an array of services for people of all ages, provided in the home and community setting, that encompasses health promotion and teaching, curative intervention, end-of-life care, rehabilitation, support and maintenance, social adaptation and integration and support for the family caregiver.” Nursing and personal care are among the most commonly provided home health care services. Individuals and families can also benefit from home support (light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, escorting clients to appointments and on shopping trips) and companionship for seniors (personal visits at home, accompanying clients to outings and special events).

A mixture of these services can help people live comfortably in their own homes for as long as possible, while also removing some of the pressure from the “sandwich generation”— the adult children caring for elderly parents and their own children as well. According to a 2014 Angus Reid survey conducted for the occasion of Mother’s Day, living at home for as long as possible is the top priority for 90 per cent of Canadian moms 55 and older. Bayshore HealthCare, a leading provider of home and community health care across Canada, commissioned the “Mother’s Day 2020” survey to shed light on how adult children and their mothers are preparing for the aging process. “There is a wide range of services and programs available to help keep mom living happily in her own home,” says Stuart Cottrelle, President of Bayshore HealthCare. “It’s ultimately about her quality of life.” In addition to nursing, personal care, home support and companionship, Bayshore HealthCare’s services include therapy and rehabilitation services (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and rehabilitation to overcome injuries, illness and disabilities), dialysis clinics, and specialty pharmaceutical services and clinics. Home health care can be paid for privately or through government care programs, personal and group insurance plans, or workers’ compensation insurance. Navigating the system can feel overwhelming; when contacting a home care agency, ask about a complimentary funding investigation to determine what financial resources are available to your family. “People will do whatever it takes to keep mom living in her home, but our survey shows that only 14 per cent have researched home care,” says Cottrelle. “We encourage people to take advantage of our free consultations. With the average age of the population steadily increasing, home care is going to be playing a vital role in our lives.” For more information about home care in British Columbia, visit the provincial government’s Health & Safety website. INTEGRATIVE NATUROPATHIC MEDICAL CENTER

Holistic Rejuvenation CLINIC PRIDES ITSELF ON INTEGRATED APPROACH In today’s tough competitive environment, 30 years for any small business i s an accomplishment. For the newly renamed Integrative Naturopathic Medical Centre that longevity can be attributed to its founders, Dr Eric Posen, Dr Lawrence Chan and Dr Hal Brown, who are still actively involved and who believe in a truly integrated approach to healthcare. “They are a fantastic team and complement each other really well,” says general manager Carmen Dueck. “They were one of the first in Canada to establish an alternative wellness centre with a bigger scope beyond just offering chiropractic care.” While the centre originally started out as a chiropractic clinic, it has grown over the years to include a diverse range of services. Today, its well-rounded and holistic naturopathic offerings set the Integrative Naturopathic Medical Centre apart. “It gives our clients a real choice,” Dueck says. “When you come to our clinic, each of the doctors has a different scope and we can match them with the best practitioner that suits the need.”

Included in the choices available are services like the Rejuveness Skin Treatment, a lymphatic drainage treatment exclusive to Integrative, usedforboth medical and cosmetic applications. “When you drain the lymphatic system everything tightens up because everything begins to move better,” Dueck says. “On the face, for example, the collagen gets some elasticity back as it lifts and tightens the skin.” Integrative is also on the cutting edge with its stem-cell treatment PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Therapy) that uses a patient’s own platelets for both medical and cosmetic applications. “In our skin centre we use PRP instead of collagen and inject your own stem cells into the areas where you want a little more plumpness,” Dueck explains. Treatments aside, Dueck says that it really is the caring nature of everyone that works at Integrative that has kept many patients coming back since it opened 30 years ago. “It really is like a family. Heart first, everything else second.”
