t’s time for Big Bend Brewing Co.’s annual Valentine’s in Valentine celebration. This is the 6th year the Alpine brewery throws a west Texas party in the small town of Valentine (population 200) on February 14, no matter what day of the week it falls. Valentine doesn’t have a gas station, a grocery store or an ATM machine, but Big Bend Brewing always brings the love with this annual event. “It just embodies so many of the things that are wonderful about west Texas and living in west Texas, and celebrating the land and the people and the community,”

said Mahala Guevara, vice president of operations. “Part of the reason we’re so committed to throwing this crazy party is that it’s a spiritual homecoming for all of us.” With this year’s party on a Wednesday, Big Bend Brewing is declaring Wednesday night as “Local’s Night”—featuring a lineup of local acts, including Beebe & Primo of Marfa, The Doodlin’ Hogwallops of Alpine and Doug Moreland band of Fort Davis. The plan to repeat this theme every time Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday.

“We have so many great bands that either live in the Big Bend area or from the Big Bend area who don’t always get a chance to play on the Valentine’s Day stage,” said Guevara. “We think the west Texas musicians can compete with anyone.” These 3 acts aren’t exactly strangers to the Valentine stage though; they’ve played the event one year or another, opening for the headliners such as Gary P. Nunn, Joe Ely or Little Joe y La Familia. Beebe and Primo play corridos, boleros, rancheras y mas, as The Doodlin’ Hogwallops bring the honky-tonk. Moreland is currently located in Austin, but has roots in Fort Davis as he was born and raised in the Davis Mountains. The fiddler and his band will end the night with western swing. Along with the classic Big Bend Brewing beers served on site, the brewery will also serve a special Barelywine called Old Love, named after a west Texas treasure. The honoree won’t be revealed until Valentine’s Day, but Guevara shared that only 214 bottles of this limited drink will only be available at the event. There will be Valentine’s in Valentine merchandise on sale and the Hello Trouble Hall—a traveling honky-tonk venue/bar/stage/ lounge—will be onsite. Austinite Chris Marsh created this 20foot portable space that has set up shop (literally) at a few of the

Big Bend Brewing traveling events. “This will be the west Texas debut of Hello Trouble Hall on Valentine’s Day,” said Guevara. People can also send love letters from Valentine that will be mailed by the brewing with the special “love station” cancellation stamp. Every year, Valentine high school and junior high students design the cancellation stamp with Valentine City Council selecting the winner. As many as 30,000 letters are mailed to the post office to be stamped each year. Visitors from all over the state have traveled to the Old Mercantile Building for Valentine’s in Valentine, but it has also become a chance for former west Texas residents to come back to see old friends. “We take a lot of pride in creating an environment that has been describe to us as walking into a giant west Texas reunion,” said Guevara. “That’s the spirit that we want.” Valentine’s in Valentine will be from 4 p.m. To 6 p.m. On Wednesday, February 14 at the old Mercantile Building in Valentine, Texas.  bigbendbrewing.com

La trivialidad de la vida diaria, malas desiciones y las fallidas relaciones amorosas son algunos de los temas que Young Tender comunica de una manera extraordinaria y fresca. Música de calidad con referencias de los 80´s y ritmos energéticos con letras bien pensadas, dejan una melancolía inexplicablemente agradable.

Young Tender es una banda originaria de Monterrey que se ha posicionado como una de las bandas mas propositivas de la escena musical actual. Inicia en el 2013 cuando Monterrey atravesaba una ola de violencia y era difícil y casi imposible poder salir de casa a divertirse. Los integrantes Abel en guitarra, Sixto en batería, Jamaica en voz, Chris en teclados y Daniel en bajo utilizaban su música como escape y forma de expresión.

Inician una etapa nueva trabajando en material donde mantienen algunos elementos característicos de la banda pero evolucionando en los sonidos. Siguen una ola bailable de los 80s y una contraparte de voces graves.

Al escuchar su música es imposible no recordar los discos vinilos, los sintetizadores y con ello percibir una fuerte influencia en la década nostálgica de los 80´s. Sintetizadores y otros elementos forman parte de esa identidad única de los integrantes que va siempre impregnada de energía y talento. Varios han sido los géneros que se les a atribuido pero logran identificarse con city pop y sad disco. Entre diversos géneros e influencias encuentran un sonido variable y particular de la banda. Un

Su corto trayecto en la escena musical no los hace menos, pues su gran manera de crear los convierte en una propuesta fresca y innovadora de la música mexicana. Young Tender crea un balance perfecto e impredecible entre la nostalgia y las ganas de bailar. mí siempre me gustó The Knife, el dúo electrónico sueco, eran como los primos post pubertos que venían de la gran ciudad, súper clavados e intensos en sus pláticas y su visión retorcida de ver la vida, un híbrido entre chavos punks e intelectuales. Karin y Olof Dreijer Andersson con The Knife eran eso, una propuesta muy apasionada, con este halo de misterio, herméticos, con sus beats aunque nunca estridentes, siempre bien colocados y agradables. Si bien, el sonido de esta banda formada en 1999 en Göteborg, Suecia no era el hilo negro de la música nórdica, había algo que sobresalía de su sonido, la voz de Karin, su vocalista. La tesitura enigmática que logra es hipnotizante, afinación concisa y un timbre muchas veces aniñado le daban ese aire de complejidad que desde su debut nos atrapó. Otra de las características de la agrupación fue su poca disposición para colaborar con los medios e incluso para hacer apariciones en público, y cuando lo llegaban a hacer era cubiertos con máscaras, incluso durante sus primeros años se negaron a aparecer en shows en vivo, les digo, era como los primos intensos. A mediados del año 2009 Karin empezó a crear maquetas de audio mucho más sombrías, su hermano le cedió la imagen del proyecto y se pasó al estudio donde ayudó a crear los complejos tracks de esta nueva era en la familia Dreijer llamada: FEVER RAY. El nombre viene por la sensación que tuvo la cantante una tarde de grabación en el estudio: “Alcé mis brazos y sentí la vibración de la canción en mi piel, se sintió como un a descarga, como esa sensación de escalofrió cuando tienes fiebre, fue una señal.” En esta nueva etapa, su imagen es mucho más oscura, una vez la nombraron como la Joel-Peter Witkin de la música

y bien merecida comparación, sólo basta con ver sus videos, escenarios inquietantes con hilos conductores muy complejos. Su álbum debut homónimo, fue bien recibido por la crítica; fueron siete sencillos los que se promocionaron, uno más oscuro que el otro, siempre manteniendo ese halo de lobreguez y lleno de referencias perturbadoras, los videos “Seven” y “When I grow up” son prueba de ello. Aunque su paso por la producción de discos es muy limitado, sus colaboraciones fueron clave para que esta agrupación pudiera posicionarse como un referente del indie electrónico europeo, el tema “If I had a Heart” es la canción de inicio de la exitosa serie Vikingos, sus apariciones en temas para reconocidas bandas y cantantes como Röyksopp, Robyn y Deus han sido aplaudidas por la crítica y muy bien recibida por su sequito de seguidores, que se cuentan por miles alrededor del mundo. Plunge es el título de su recién estrenado álbum, el cual sólo está disponible en formato digital ya que su versión en físico estará disponible hasta febrero del próximo año, ¿la razón?, el intenseo de los primos raros, insisto. A través de un comunicado de prensa, Dreijer dijo sobre su primer sencillo: “Pensaba en el sexo o al menos como una especie de intensidad física hacia reaccionar al cuerpo, pero lo lancé todo por la borda junto con el cuerpo y caí en un silencio que describe el borde de la canción (‘To the Moon and Back’)”. Ya se habla de una gira en el 2018 y de la finalización de la opera prima inspirada en la teoría de la evolución de Darwin creada por Olof y su esposa. Lástima, a mis verdaderos primos sólo se les quedó lo intenso y lo retorcido. 

orn and raised in El Paso, TX, Gabriel C. Rodriguez is a local selftaught artist who interprets the world through what he calls a “cartoon lens.” Whether it’s illustrating scenes from his beloved city, making a political piece or venturing into the surreal realm, his knack for cartooning gives his art a feel of those childhood memories when Saturday morning cartoons were the norm. When he’s not working on his pieces, Rodriguez illustrates songs he’s grown up to in the form of comics books. Influenced by MAD/Cracked Magazine as well as vintage 70s underground comics, his various titles (Skidelado Pamphlezine, Dog Meat Comics, & Comix 2 Drive By) cover a range of genres, from gangsta-rap to industrialrock, using familiar characters acting out the lyrics to these songs. Rodriguez has participated in the “Amor Por Juarez” art auction, various Last Thursday Art Walks, gallery showings in various venues and is the “2015 Best Local Artist” winner from The What’s Up Magazine’s Best of the Best series. uando un artista siente la necesitad de crear, busca por todos los medios y recursos para poder plasmar su obra, así es el caso de Betty Árbol (Cd. Juárez, 1987), artista juarense que puede crear diversos tipos de obra, pero siempre conservando esa espontaneidad que vemos reflejada en la misma. Egresada de IADA de la carrera de diseño gráfico y el haber cursado durante un semestre en la academia de San Carlos en CDMX, hizo que se detonaran algunos de los temas que observamos en el trabajo de Betty Árbol, esa sencillez y cotidianidad que podemos notar al ver las esculturas de botas picudas, macetas de cerámica con caras de bebés, fanzines (incluyendo uno dedicado a la abducción de Jenny Rivera por los aliens), homenajes a héroes locales como sus piezas de mosaico con el rostro de Juan Gabriel o sus postales irónicas desde Cd. Juárez y Villahumada, todo está influido por lo que ve diariamente. Cuando le pregunté a Betty Árbol sobre que tanto de su inspiración viene de un ambiente hostil para el arte como Ciudad Juárez, me contestó: “Mi trabajo se alimenta mucho de lo que veo habitualmente en Ciudad Juárez, de la gente que veo en la calle y en el camión, todos esos personajes, sus atuendos, su manera de vestirse y peinarse son muy inspiracionales para mí”. En algún lado leí que el arte debe ser accesible, también democrático, esencialmente que sea para todos, no solo para unos cuantos ni para solo algunos lugares y las creaciones

de Betty son afines a esta filosofía, así que podemos ver sus creaciones en varios lados, desde cafés y galerías locales hasta las tiendas rockers donde venden parafernalia para fumar mota, donde podemos reconocer las extrañas pipas creaciones de Betty, que parecen salidas de una película de Tim Burton, su ideología es básicamente que todos puedan obtener algo de su trabajo, en el 2013 publicó un mini libro llamado: “Por la Banqueta”, que es básicamente una antología de personajes y “celebridades”, que son parte del paisaje urbano de varias ciudades, Betty siempre pensó que esas personas esquizofrénicas, borrachas, alcohólicas y dementes deberían de quedar inmortalizadas en su libro, ya que son parte de la ciudad y hasta leyendas de las mismas, esta edición se publicó con Ediciones Mantarraya, con la cual tuvo problemas a la hora de las regalías por lo que aprendió de esa lección y ahora se apoya desde su propia editorial llamada Editorial Mi Cantón, donde publica fanzines e imprime diferentes cosas como calcomanías y postales. Siendo joven aún, solo queda una dirección para el trabajo de Betty Árbol y es hacia arriba, su trabajo es sumamente identificable y fácil de asociar al ser influenciada por la cultura visual del internet, memes y es imposible verlo sin sonreír al menos una vez.  bettyarbol.carbonmade.com instagram.com/bettyarbol

LOS VISIONARIES REVOLUTIONIZING ART THROUGH LOVE, LIGHT AND UNITY WORDS:

ometimes, the stars align and things just fall into place. That’s kind of how it’s been for Los Visionaries, the mixed-media art collective that’s been building up in the El Paso underground. Co-founders Victor Soto (or VS as in versus) and Edgar “Venus” Lopez met while working the restaurant circuit. That familiar juncture in youth that calls for exploration and discovery compelled the 2 to break away in 2013 and backpack through Mexico. “We didn’t really plan everything out, we just went,” began Lopez, “We ended up in DF (Mexico) to check out the pyramids of Teotihuacan, and on top of those pyramids is where we got the inspiration to create a collective.” After 3 months spent trekking as far south as Veracruz, the 2 returned to Sun City galvanized to promote unity and positivity through their shared love of art. Nearly 4 years and 9 members later, Los Visionaries has grown into a realized creative force that’s making an indelible mark on the local art scene. Artists Diego “Robot” Martinez, Joey Delgado, Erica Terrazas, Ricardo “Enks” Uribe, Nik Flores aka “Nik Res”, Johnathan Duarte, Gabriel “Goober” Najera, David G. Mist and RITUVLS (pronounced ‘rituals’) join Soto and Lopez in forming the collective. Together, they combine street art, graphic design, film, music, dance and poetry among other modalities in a seamless and innovative amalgamation. This diverse group came together over time much in the same way that friends do. Together, Los Visionaries are showing the community just how resonant, impactful and unifying art can be. Back in March, Los Visionaries presented “Warped Perceptions”—a multi-media exhibit at the Power at the Pass featuring their collective and individual works. They also just hosted “Warped Reflections”—a thoughtful closing reception at the same venue over Thanksgiving weekend. Complete with collaborations with local acts including Orange Anima and Space Captain Collective, and an awesome dance

performance courtesy of the Sun City Floor Rockers, the event was a hit defined by stellar optics, interdisciplinary art and El Paso pride. “It was the perfect way to close out the year, and people [couldn’t] get enough of it! We received mad love from the community,” Soto beamed. Los Visionaries thanks everyone who came out to support and is planning to continue the momentum into 2018. Look out for more exhibits, installations and creativity from this crew in the near future. As Soto coined it, the Los Visionaries aesthetic is their own unique brand of “Neo-Chicano street art.” Chicano iconography, world mythology and familiar symbols of borderland life—the mountains, the river—are common motifs throughout the collective’s creations. The artists juxtapose original characters and modern techniques against universal themes and cultural reverence, paying homage to the past with a forward-thinking proclivity. “We try to represent the region and the frontera,” said Soto. Part of that representation is being conscious of the duality that defines borderland culture: “It’s just 2 different perspectives; merging those 2 lifestyles is what I think the Chicano culture is about and that definitely shows up in our art pieces,” said Lopez. A prime example is Los Visionaries’ “Ev of Rev” installation, which is located between the Chihuahuas Stadium and the Convention Center. In just 2 days, Los Visionaries covered a 220-foot long wall in a striking and dynamic mural that tells, as the title suggests, of the evolution within the borderland culture. Soto explained, “It’s not forgetting where we came from . . . it forces is us to go deeper into our own history.” The piece also speaks to their collective development as artists. “It’s become what it is today, on its own—the love is still there and the message of promoting light is still there, but it’s refined,” said Lopez. As for tomorrow, Los Visionaries hopes to expand, crossing cultural, artistic and contextual borders. Soto explained, “Let’s unify El Paso, and [connect] these sister cities through art. Just show love to everyone, music-wise, art-wise, just anything creative.” He added, “¡Mucho amor y paz a nuestra gente de la frontera!” 
