THE LOST AND FOUND I Love You Gorgo 1969 Suemi Records Compilation TXT: DANIEL SALAS

Usually for the Lost And Found I tell you about the journey it took to find the records I write about but this month, it will remain anonymous. Yeah I’ve told you about the Whoopee Bowl, Goodwill, House Mouse a few years back, and the local swap meets. Unfortunately I cannot reveal all my secrets. I’ve have given you the push start so you can ride into the El Paso streets in search for gold on previous issues but not this time. Let’s just say I did get this record here locally and for a good price. This month the Lost And Found brings you the myth, the legend that is “I Love You Gorgo”, a compilation record released on 60’s Suemi Records, a record label out of El Paso. Suemi Records was started by 2 El Paso musicians who already had their feet wet in the music scene here locally in the 60’s. Local musicians Bill Taylor Sparks and Kenny Smith had previously recorded on Bobby Fuller (El Paso’s 60’s king scenester, famous for his song I Fought The Law) Exeter label with their band The Sherwoods, decided to start their own label. The label released tons of singles or 45s by various local artist such as The Wild Ones, The Embers, The Sojourners, Crosby’s Closet, Wailing Wall, Iota and also the El Paso soul god Lou Pride, whose Suemi 45 release “Im Com’un Home in the Morn’un” is listed in the top 100 Northern Soul songs of all time and an original copy has gone for over $900 on online auctions. Surprisingly to some, El Paso has had tons of artist release music but practically goes unnoticed here locally. Locals get surprised

when they find out that there was life in this town in the past and artist released records and pushed themselves creatively. People sometimes want to disassociate themselves from El Paso, thinking its lame and nothing ever happened. Somewhere along the way the music history of El Paso dwindled and went unnoticed, but it happened and it is relevant… but I digress, let’s continue. The only LP released on the Suemi label was a compilation called “I Love You Gorgo” which featured El Paso bands of the time. This LP along side the Steve Crosno 1967 “Live at The Coliseum”, is arguably the most sought after record to come out of El Paso. When I found this record, I felt like Moses in The Ten Commandments. I had obtained one of the most essential musical documents given to me by the Gods (ha ha) to share with the open ears of present day El Paso, as I did. The LP consists of 3 El Paso bands with 4 songs a piece. The bands are The Intruders, Lode Star and Truth. The Intruders led by Rod Crosby start the album with the song “Our Love So Warm”, which has a real southwest rock and roll feel popularized by other southwest artist such as Bobby Fuller or Buddy Holly, a rock song with acoustic guitars. The Intruders remind me of early Who with their harmonies. The drums on this tune sound like Keith Moon had stepped in and taken over the drum duties. The songs of the Intruders sometimes sound like Lou Reed strumming acoustic. On their song “Patrician Melody”, the intruders channel the Zombies and slow things down. The band Truth con-

tinue forth on this masterpiece with their drugged out psych song “It’s a Nice Day Isn’t It” with its haunting organ and crazy wailing guitars. The other Truth songs are mind bending psychedelic adventures that take you in and out of reality, with moody mellow grooves that could be out of a Pebbles garage psych comp. Lode Star on this LP are the heavy rockers of this comp with fuzzed out riffing and more psychedelic journeys. The band’s song “Glympses” starts at 100 miles per hour and give validity to the term Texas Psych, as Texas was known to have some of the heaviest psychedelic sounds of the United States with bands such as The 13th Floor Elevators, The Pandas, Red Krayola and the Moving Sidewalks to name a few. You can definitely add Lode Star to the list. When I started collecting records, more importantly El Paso vinyl, “I Love You Gorgo” kept coming up in conversation but not just because it was from El Paso, but because it was damn good. Anything that came out of this label is good. Although it is probably more popular with record collectors or music lovers outside of El Paso, its time to appreciate or recognize this masterpiece that was created here in town. The record even has the address where it was record on Lindbergh ST in the Upper Valley. Take a southwest psychedelic voyage where you will hear the sounds of 60’s El Paso that navigate through fuzzed out moody psych, with tinges of country and southern rock. It is a puzzle piece of the musical history of this town, and it rocks hard. FM
