Herbert Gallery, Jordan Well, Coventry www.theherbert.org 18 November – 11 March 2012 Coventry born George Shaw has forged a formidable reputation within the art community over the last 15 years, culminating in his recent Turner Prize nomination. His work surrounds the area he grew up in, Tile Hill, which was often riddled with the graffitied musings of a disillusioned youth, who took comfort in scribing I woz ere wherever they chose. Much of Shaw’s work documents these, seemingly obscure, areas of his youth and the disembodiment he felt when returning later as a so-called ‘visitor’ to his old stomping ground to find everything changing. The moody simplicity of Shaw’s work is haunting and yet there is an underlying beauty that lurks beyond the surface. What usually would be considered mundane subject matters are brought to life by the deft attention to detail and the skill of Shaw’s brush. Having showed his work once this year already, Shaw believed that the Coventry paintings would end following the showing. It was not to be, as fresh inspiration following the death of his father means that he continues to cling to the past, working on his end to the Coventry paintings. In a sense, his work is his moniker on the Coventry landscape - his I woz ere. For the first time, Shaw brings the product back to the inspiration with his first show starting at The Herbert in Coventry, in November. LH 09

SOME DOMESTIC INCIDENTS:
An Exhibition of New Painting from Britain mac, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham www.macarts.co.uk Until 13 November
Home is where the heart is – or so they say. Some Domestic Incidents, in conjunction with Prague Biennale 5, looks at the different perceptions that people have of their homes and how every day occurrences can turn a home into an oppressive force. Instances like burglaries, family deaths or even visits from bailiffs have the power to strip warmth from a home and leave an indelible mark. For others, the home is never a happy place from the start. It is a place of loneliness and melancholy, misery and oppression – where the walls are more akin to a prison than the proverbial castle they should be. The exhibition explores the reality of these differing perspectives and the gulf that exists in modern perceptions of the home. Including Graham Chorlton, Sally Payen, Caroline Walker, Oliver Clegg and more, the subject matter is as diverse as the perceptions of the home they represent. Midlands based Chorlton will explores night scenes often devoid of human presence, with chairs pulled from tables with discarded cards, all signifiers of relationships and lives that have ended in the home. Another West Midlands based artist Sally Payen’s previous work has addressed issues of angst, protest and civil unrest. Her pieces for the show depict the remnants of a house party that has gone sour. Graham Chortle will be giving an illustrated talk on his work featured in the show on 17 October at 7.30pm. My usual version of ’supper’ is a bit of marmite on toast and a twofinger Kit-Kat, but this places takes it into the realms of ‘art’.
On arrival you’re asked to wait in the dark, leather-clad S&M styled bar, before you embark upstairs to an uber-modernist white room with psychedelic backdrops. DJs spin ambient house music while performance artists play instruments to accompany the sounds, all while you relax on beds and eat your fivecourse surprise tasting menu (the night we went it had an oriental influence). If it all sounds a bit achingly trendy and Nathan Barley-esque then prepare to be surprised as it’s completely unpretentious and great fun! The pace picks up when the plates are washed and the BPMs shift up a couple of notches giving you the opportunity to burn off the calories on the dancefloor. The 19 and 20 December will see thrift return to the Herbert in the Make Do and Mend Christmas Crafts. Using the war time initiative families can recycle and reuse materials in an inventive and creative way. Families can drop-in any time between 10.30am to 12.30pm or 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Christmas without music is like presents without wrapping which is why this year the Herbert is inviting the under 5s to bring their adults to the Early Years Musical Christmas. Taking place at 10.30am and 11.30am on 21 December this creative, and on occasion, loud activity will include nursery rhymes, instruments and Christmas songs. The sessions are led by local company Music box; there is no need to book but you may be asked to attend the next session if the first is full. Taking over the streets of Birmingham from the 14th - 23rd October Food Fest 2011 will see over 100 events and 80 different offers at restaurants, cafes, eateries and surprising venues across the city. Along with the Michelin stared heavy-hitters (Simpsons, Purnell’s and Turners of Harborne) and the suburban favourites (The Manic Organic Café in Kings Heath, Sabai Sabai in Moseley) you’ll also be invited to sample the delights of Digbeth with Edible Eastside’s Concrete Garden. For drink lovers there will be cocktail making, a real ale trail and wine tasting taking place but if you really want to splash out then how about ‘Dine Under the Stars’ at Thinktank’s Planetarium? ‘Enjoy a sumptuous three course meal under candle light and the glow of the moon’ on the 14th or 15th October for £250 (for 2). Sampling what will be on offer at Indian favourite Pushkar (www.pushkardining. com) food-lover and amateur blogger Annette Naudin (annetten.posterous. com/) went to find out... Pushkar is what you might call a ‘posh’ Indian restaurant with a glitzy decor and a very bright interior. It is probably on a par with the award-winning Lasan. Its owner, Rai, is charming and is clearly passionate about creating a special restaurant experience. For me, it feels a bit loud and nouveau riche but still, it’s fun and we don’t have many places like it. A little bit of Bollywood in Birmingham! Pushkar’s concept for Food Fest is Northern Indian ‘street food’ but presented in the same sophisticated style the restaurant is known for. Straight away I had a problem with that. If you are going to do ‘street food’, then why not experiment with the presentation too? Still, the flavours were very good and Rai’s enthusiasm was compelling. Having explained that his chef had researched the food carefully, Rai also had a nice narrative about his mother’s influence and her involvement in preparing some of the dishes. The main dishes included eating meat off the bone described by Rai as typical of ‘street food’. I don’t often have a dessert at Indian restaurants but the homemade Kulfi was delicious. A week later, I can still remember the deep and earthy taste of cardamon so distinctive of Indian desserts. I might not have chosen to go to Pushkar if I hadn’t been invited to sample the food but I’m glad I did and I would recommend it, particularly during the festival as they will be offering a complimentary champagne cocktail! And of course that is what Food Fest is all about - being experimental and trying something our of your comfort zone. Check the website for offers and dates. 029

IT’S BREWING IN THE MIDLANDS What with the Birmingham Beer Festival looming round the corner (27th-29th October), it’s the perfect time to talk about beer. The cask ale revival has definitely gained momentum with cask ale now accounting for 1 in 4 pints, according to the Marston’s Cask Report. Birmingham in particular is jam-packed with great places to get an ‘ale fix’ and finding this quite an exciting prospect is recently converted ale drinker Kimberley Owen. Of course, there’s the Victoria, Rose Villa Tavern and Jekyll & Hyde to choose from, along with stalwarts The Wellington and Digbeth’s The Anchor, and we know we could name many more but Kimberley is only just starting her exploration in to the world of ales. Microbreweries are now popping up around the West Midlands and below is just a small (and by no means definitive) selection of the ones which should float your boat. Based in the heart of Warwickshire Purity Brewing Co. is a favourite of many of the city’s dwellers. With its dedication to only using natural ingredients you’re ensured a tasty pint. It’s zesty pale ale, Mad Goose is dead cert if you want to end your pint with a smile on your face. You could also try the brewery’s Pure Gold or UBU if you want to score a delicious hat trick. Angel Ales seems to be developing a distinct following. Although this brewery is small scale it doesn’t compromise on the taste of its ale. As a winner of the Best Beer Award at the Stourbridge Beer Festival, it’s time to get your fix of their delicious brews at the Waggon & Horses in Halesowen. Springhead, based in Nottingham has more than a few fans. The brewery’s featured beer of the month is ‘Roaring Meg’ aka the Big Blonde’ – you can get your fix of this from all ‘good supermarkets’ if you fancy taking a bottle home. Sillhill brewery in Solihull comes highly recommended, particularly it’s Sill Hill Four, a pale ale which is definitely refreshing. Or how about heading to the heart of the Black Country for the self-proclaimed (and well deserved) “legendary beer of the Black Country” from family brewers Bathams. With five generations of esteemed heritage to perfect its sweet Best Bitter you can’t go wrong. If you’re up for exploring, or even trying your first sip of cask ale, give the Birmingham Beer Festival a try. David Conroy has lived in the Jewellery Quarter for eight years. The urban village sensibility has seeped into his bones and he’s found it easy to appreciate how individuals and businesses are connected and how that helps drive the local economy and its myriad of on and off-line networks. When David and Kate Butler opened Brewsmiths Coffee & Tea in May this year they took steps to identify small businesses to trade with in the Quarter and around the city. Many business owners will attest that finding reliable suppliers is one of their biggest headaches. But using social networks to identify and assess suitability made the process simpler and helped make that often difficult first contact. They found two superb local artisan bakers this way - Bake Birmingham (www.bake-shop.co.uk) and ToBizzyToBake (@ToBizzyToBake) - and have worked closely with them for four months. Through collaboration with Bake and the Two Towers Brewery - owners of the local Brown Lion pub (18 Hall Street, B18 6BS) - they developed their exclusive Jewellery Quarter Porter Cake. This rich chocolate cake, with its story rooted in the creativity and passion of the quarter, is made with Two Towers Porter beer and finest organic ingredients. With a topping of delectable cream cheese icing and gold frosted Maltesers it has quickly become a best seller. With ToBizzyToBake and Anderson and Hill Delicatessen in the Great Western Arcade they’ve also created some of the freshest filled ciabattas in the city. The bread is baked and delivered fresh each morning and filled with tempting cheeses and meats. Brewsmiths ethos proves it’s all about collaboration rather than competition. 033

Travelling through the Caribbean, North and South America, the Pacific, the Med, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, China and having resided in Barcelona for a short while; she was swept up in the romance of coffee culture as well as its heritage. 034
Global coffee cultures can vary the boldness, the taste and the roast (they are so proud of their creation they will don it the Italian Roast, the French Roast, the New England Roast and yes that is correct – even America has mastered a cracking bean despite what the so called connoisseurs of coffee will have you believe). Coffee is subjective – it is in the eye of the beholder as the presentation, service style, the additions of syrups or liqueurs and even the making of coffee is clearly evidence of. Café Blend is celebrating the differences of a commonality; that we all love coffee! She explains: “I had been walking down a highway surrounded by beautiful landscape. After a few hours of enduring a quenching thirst and realising that not only are flip-flops not suitable attire for trekking but also that I had no comprehension of distance when I started this ridiculous hunt for a morning caffeine fix Three hours
later I found it, my oasis! Somewhere along the Mauna Lau I saw a row of six stores at the bottom of a vast cascading slope. It was then that I noticed a big purple plastic donkey which was really not in keeping with the surroundings. I limped over to the purple donkey and behold; a coffee shop called “Donkey Balls” appeared before me. I had not realised to begin with but Donkey Balls is also one of Kona’s roasting plants where I was told that the name is derived from their freshly roasted beans that are coated in chocolate as a delicious snack with your coffee. I ordered the “Heavenly” and sat outside. My drink came to me and it was as cold as ice and a well deserved refreshing treat after such a trek to locate one. I sipped my coffee and looked out at the view; a moody sky over green capped mountains and valleys of reds, pinks and yellows. It was beautiful and I will never forget that morning.” If you would like to make the Café Blend version of the coffee Sophie enjoyed in Kona, then this is what you will need for the “Heavenly Blend”: - A double espresso of Kona coffee - 2 shots of Amaretto syrup or 25ml Disaronno Amaretto - 2 scoops of vanilla bean ice cream - Blend and top with whipped cream - Enjoy! Becoming increasingly known for their bespoke and memorable dining experiences Kaye Winwood and Siân Tonkin of Companis (meaning to ‘break bread with someone’) are challenging people’s taste buds and foody perceptions with their challenging menus. Immersing the diner in a fusion of performance, food and spectacle their recent project Floating Feast for Ikon’s Slow Boat, involved Companis working with the Ikon Youth Programme and Ikon Café to produce an evening of intimate dining on a narrow canal boat for a group of 20 diners at a shared table. The menu took inspiration from the canals and fictional narratives were created for menu titles and descriptions, all served without cutlery, encouraging mess and interaction of diners whilst pushing the boundaries of sharing and personal space amongst strangers. Diners were invited to consume a Canal Water aperitif and revel in the newly discovered ‘health benefits’ of Birmingham canal water. Other courses included Bird Splattered Mess (Eton Mess), Bilge Water (soup), Filter-Feeder Salad ‘nourished by heavy metals’ (fresh water crustaceans), and Grappled Treasure and Sludge (coffee and truffles), alluding to the grittier side of the canal network. 036
Companis is also part of Birmingham Contemporary Art Forum’s The Event and Birmingham Food Fest’s Fringe Programme, where they plan to offer ‘Fluxus-inspired limited edition Instructional Food Boxes’, to be sold for a small fee at Eastside Café in Digbeth between 12 – 2pm from 21st to 30th October.

As well as being a place to get a top notch cup of coffee, Birmingham’s independent coffee shop 6/8 Kafé also likes to give the second city creative types some support by dabbling in unique opportunities. One of their latest projects involves illustrators, photographers and designers sprucing up the humble, and often taken for granted, takeaway coffee cup. If you have an itchy finger for the pen, mouse or camera shutter then submit your work to 6/8 and they will print it on stickers to adorn their paper cups for customers to muse over. Several prominent West Midlands based creatives have already gotten involved, such as illustrators One Sugar Please and Kooky Koala Illustrations, photographers Helen Flanagan and Jodie Atkins and FAKE magazine creator Kerry Leslie. This is an ongoing project that will keep trucking until people stop submitting designs. THE MONA PIZZA Take two things any normal human being loves; food and music.Combine them. Voila! A cookery book made up of recipes by your favourite bands. Introducing... The Mona Pizza. Mike Coley, the man behind The Mona Pizza tries to explain how the book came about; “I guess I have always been interested in food and music, cookery and records, and I thought it might be interesting to explore the relationship between them”. Coley, a Birmingham expat, started to make contact with bands from around the globe about a year ago, sharing his idea and hoping for a positive response back. “At times it was very easy, and at others super frustrating! I would get three or four great submissions in a day and then have to wait weeks for the next”.
The book includes a range of recipes, from Scotch Sushi, to Vegan Chocolate Cake, to Mackerel in Pitta, submitted from bands and artists including; Bitches, U.S Girls, Emmy The Great and a host more. It’s illustrated by another local expat, George Collum (member of Birmingham band Death Ohh Eff) whose eerie drawings simultaneously horrify and entice you. “I’ve known George for a really long time and he’s always been a brilliant illustrator” explains Coley, “when I dreamt up this project I had a definite idea of aesthetic and style, and it was just George”. And is Birmingham responsible for providing inspiration behind the book? “The sad truth is that I couldn’t afford to eat out much when I was in Birmingham, but I always enjoyed Cafe Soya. The Warehouse Cafe in Digbeth and Maison Mayci in Kings Heath were favourites too”. The Mona Pizza is available to buy now from www.bellykids.co.uk and will be officially launched at Foodie exhibition ‘Eat What Ya Like’ at Beach Gallery in Shoreditch, London, on the 1st October.
