SCHOOL EVENTS

This year, for the first time in our school, we had a SuperTmatik championship. The students had the opportunity to learn how to play during their Study Skills lessons and later on they played in the school SuperTmatik competition, on March 22nd. The winners were: Ana Dias (5th1) Marco Vilas Boas (5th6) Tiago Gonçalves (6th5) Luís Ferreira (6th2) Ana Jéssica Cardoso (7th4) Vera Dias (7th4) There was decided which players would represent our school in the national competition, which took place on April, 30th. Ana Dias (5th1) got the 8th place! Congratulations! If you haven’t made it to the national competition this year, you can always play this game at the school library and start practicing for next year! And if you don’t know the rules, you can learn them at www.funtasticenglish.blogspot.com.

CLOSE UP 3

Students— Students—What is your daily routine? Teacher— Teacher—Every day I wake up at around half past seven or eight o’clock I listen to music and have a shower. I have breakfast with my son. At nine o’clock I take my son to school. Then I come to school and work until the end of the day, at around half past five or half past six p.m. I help at home with household chores, I study with my children, prepare their bath and help in the dinner preparation (preparation for tomorrow). This is basically my daily routine. S—What is your favourite part of the day? T—My favourite part of the day is the morning, because I have more energy. As the day goes on, this energy decreases and I get to the end of the day very exhausted, tired, that’s why the morning is my favourite part of the day. S—What would be your dream day? T—This is a difficult question to answer, because I have many dream days, I cannot say whether a specific, but one that I would enjoy doing, for example, to share my happiness with children who are suffering from cancer in Porto IPO, get out there and make a clowns performance. In the past, when I was younger, your age or a little older, I was part of, say, a group of clowns. So I’d like to share my happiness with the children who are suffering in Porto’s IPO. That would be a day dream for me. S—Thank you teacher Artur, for this interview. interview T—I thank you, too . Thank you very much. News team: Ana Cardoso and Francisca Cardoso, 6th1

Students— Students—What is your daily routine? Teacher— Teacher— I get up at seven o'clock. I always have breakfast at home. I go to school. Sometimes I have lunch at school. In the afternoon I feed my animals and correct the students’ work. I go to the gym twice a week. Then I have dinner at eight o'clock and I go to bed at ten o'clock. S—What is your favourite part of the day? T—My favourite part of the day is the evening, because I'm alone. I am more focused in reading or doing paperwork. S—What is your dream day? T—I think I don’t have a dream day. Everybody has moments of happiness. I would love being with my family and travelling to exotic places.

Protec ng the environment is a responsibility we all have, and our students are very aware of that. Take a look at these projects!

By Alexandra Ferreira, 6th1

My favourite wild animal is the white tiger which is known as the Bengal Tiger. It is an animal that is in the process of extinction. The Bengal tiger usually lives in the forests of India. This animal was born with a white fur with black or grey lines and blue eyes. This animal eats other smaller animals such as deers, monkeys and birds but it can also eat bigger ones like small buffaloes, rhinos and elephants.

Hello!

By Francisca Cardoso, 6th1

I am Francisca, I’m eleven years old. And I am in the sixth grade. When I was a child, my favourite animals were the felines, but when I saw the panda I fell in love with it. My favourite animal is the panda. It is black and white, with small black ears, oval patches around the eyes and a black nose. It`s the cutest bear, because it is fantastic, but unfortunately it is in danger of extinction. The pandas live in China. Their food consists of 99% bamboo. When they are born, the panda babies have 15 cm in length and 100g weight, newborns have almost naked skin. More than 100 pandas live in captivity, but only 30% of their puppies survive more than six months. Pandas have a sixth finger to help them manipulate the bamboo. I love them because they are beautiful, dear and cute. Bye!!!

By André Figueiredo, 6th1 My favourite store is Sports Direct. This store is located in Barcelos and next to a supermarket. The store is very big and it also has many products. I love this store because I can buy my hats, clothes, trousers and many more things. A my mum says I'm addicted to shopping, but s he als o lik es to go t here. Many people go there because the prices are very low, but they also have higher prices. A few days ago this store was robbed by four thieves.

By Ana Francisca Simões, 6th7 My favourite shop is Tiffosi. Tiffosi has got fashionable and beautiful clothes. There I can buy jackets, jeans, sweaters and t-shirts. Tiffosi has got creative clothes and I like them because I love wearing different things.

My favourite stadium is the WEMBLEY stadium. This stadium has capacity for 90.000 people. It is the third stadium with more capacity in Europe. This stadium is magnificent, and it is one of the best in the world. The stadium has got 2.618 bathrooms more than any other in the world. There are used over 56 miles of electrical wire construction, 2.300 cubic meters and 23.000 tons of steel. The main colours of the stadium are red and white. This stadium is used only on special games. I would like to visit this stadium one day.

1. Choose a person from the board and write down the name on a piece of paper. Your opponent will do the same. 2. The younger person will start by asking a question about their opponent's secret person. 3. Ask questions that help you figure out who the mystery person is on your opponent's face card. Answer questions with either a "Yes" or a "No." For instance, your first question could be "Does your mystery person have hair?" 4. Answer your opponent's question and then your opponent will eliminate people who do not fit the answer. If your question was, "Does your mystery person have hair?" and your opponent says no, you can eliminate all of the people on your game piece who have hair. 5. Eliminate people with the answers received during each turn. 6. Use your turn to either ask a question or guess the mystery person. Be sure to narrow your list before asking about a specific mystery person, otherwise, you lose the game. TIPS: You can make so me additional research if you don’t know some of these characters and learn more about them. Why not making a “Guess Who?” gameboard with pictures of your friends and family?

Last week, our class watched a film called “Super Size Me”. In this film Morgan Spurlock follows a McDiet, that is, he eats McDonald’s for 30 days. At the beginning, he thought it was difficult to eat super size menus, but after some days, he became addicted to that food. At the end of the McDiet, he was 11kg heavier. I found the film fantastic, cool, interesting and important. By Marco Lopes, 9th2 In my opinion the film “Super Size Me” is a perfect example of how a person becomes when this person eats nothing but Junk Food. I really enjoyed watching the film and I realized that nowadays children are not well informed about their health and their eating habits. That made me think about how lucky I am for having parents who are worried about me and my brother’s health. If it weren’t for my parents, I would probably be as fat as those kids in the film. By Juliana Semedo, 9th4 In my opinion, the film was very interesting because it calls our attention to the harmful effects that fast food can cause if we exaggerate. The film proves that fast food not only makes us get fat as it can also cause a lot of serious life threatening diseases. It was also incredible to see the numbers on obesity in the USA. Nevertheless, the phenomenon of obesity is not only happening in the United States, but also in other countries. By Gonçalo Nascimento, 9th3 I liked watching the film “Super size me”, because it is about something real. We don´t know the calories we are ingesting when we eat fast food. I would like to congratulate Morgan Spurlock for being able to eat that great amount of food. I believe no one could do the same as he did. By Pedro Figueiredo, 9th3

Hello! My name is Gonçalo and I am going to talk about my favourite dish. My favourite dish is duck with rice. Duck with rice is made of rice, duck meat, carrots, sausages, ham, orange and cheese. This is my favourite dish, because at the end, when it is almost ready, it goes to the oven and the cheese melts. I love cheese. This dish is typical from Portugal. I don’t know if people eat it in other countries, but I think it is only made in Portugal.

My favourite shop is Pizza Hut. I like every pizza but my favourite one is with cheese and ham. When I go to pizza hut, I drink coke and I eat pizza with ham. I love this shop. By Alícia Fernandes, 6th7

STUDENTS’ PROJECTS Hello! I’m going to talk about music. Music, to me, is something that I really love, so I don’t like music just to listen to but also to sing. I like playing the guitar too. When I’m in the shower I’m always singing. I think that music is an art that makes people happy and relaxed too. Music is everywhere we go, everywhere we are. It is even in our heads and hearts because we all have a favourite song that touches us, that we love singing. This is what I think about music. By Patrícia Lopes, 9th1

Hello! I’m going to talk about my dream job. In the future, I would like to be a paediatrician. I´ve got this idea for some time. I would like to have this job because it involves children. I love kids, they are very dear to me. My dream is to be a paediatrician and I want to fulfil this dream. I can´t explain what I feel, I just know that I want to be a paediatrician. I am also aware that to be a paediatrician, I have to study and work a lot. But, I have to think, as I always say: with hard work, passion and dedication, the goals are achieved no matter how difficult they are!

And that’s all. Thank you for listening.

Two weeks ago I was proposed by my English teacher to talk about something in English for 3 minutes, in the activity called “Show and Tell”. I talked about my last weekend. I was nervous and I didn’t feel quite confident because I was afraid to fail and because I was the first to come in front of the class to do it. I got a good mark, but I know that I can do better than I did…let’s wait for the next time. I found the activity cool, interesting, funny and important to develop our English vocabulary. By Marco Lopes, 9th2

The purpose of the “Show and Tell” activity is to help students to face an audience. We can speak without being interrupted and at the end, the teacher says what we did wrong and right. I believe that this project is going to be very useful in the future, because it gives us a picture of what expects us as university students and as people who will have a career, that is, we will have to feel confident. By Juliana Semedo, 9th4

I was invited by the teacher to talk about something in front of the class. So I went home and I thought about it. When the day arrived, I was a little nervous, but I think it was ok. The activity was good to make me leave the shame behind and speak more. There are some students who are shy and this is a great opportunity to make them speak as much as they can. By Pedro Figueiredo, 9th3

I think that my performance in the “Show and Tell” activity went well. This activity helped us to feel more confident and to lose the fear of speaking in public. We had to prepare our speech in English and that was good. The worry of having to prepare a text worth it because then we heard the praise of our teacher. By Patrícia Lopes, 9th1
