Impact Report

1

WELCOME 2017 was a big year for Full Circle Fund. We’ve renewed our vision and seen the remarkable impact when changemakers come together with the common goal of creating a BETTER BAY AREA. Additionally, the challenges we all see and feel on a daily basis are constantly shifting. It is these challenges, and knowing that we can do better, that inspires us to adapt to the changing times, which is why this year we came together to define our strategic framework as an organization. This evolution was established through hundreds of conversations, interviews, focus groups, and surveys with all of you. Through this work, we have developed an exciting new strategic framework including new Programmatic, Membership and Funding Models which will enable Full Circle Fund to have the greatest impact on the most pressing issues in the Bay Area. In the following report, we are excited to share our accomplishments from 2017, as well a sampling of our new strategic framework which will inform our vision for 2018 and beyond. As with all of our work, we look to you to help us realize this vision through making social impact a priority in your daily lives. Thank YOU, and together we will create a BETTER BAY AREA.

If you want to change something, be a changemaker!

-Jay Hirschton, Executive Director

VISION Full Circle Fund is a convener, connector, and catalyst helping changemakers build a better Bay Area. We envision a Bay Area where professionals from all walks of life harness their resources to make social responsibility a priority—building a thriving, sustainable, and diverse community that helps shape solutions to today’s most pressing issues. Our community catalyzes change through an engaged philanthropy model comprised of four core pathways: Community Events, Capacity Building Workshops, Learning & Training Sessions, and an Annual Grant Cycle.

MISSION We bring together those from the public, private and nonprofit sectors to leverage their time, networks, and resources to partner in accelerating social change. We’re working together to find innovative answers to the Bay Area’s most pressing problems.

REFINING OUR

Strategic Framework BUILDING THE MODEL This past year, we embarked on a journey to better understand our “why” and more effectively align our strategies with our mission and the changing times. It became clear that what we were well positioned to do—as part of a multi-generational, multi-sector network —was “bridging gaps.” The Empathy Gap. The Resources Gap. The Funding Gap. The Skills Gap. The Sector Gap. And that our power lied in the diversity, connectedness, and commitment of our community. In the process, three key strategies emerged - Full Circle Fund is a convener, connector, and catalyst for Bay Area Changemakers. To be an inclusive

community, we had to meet our constituents where they’re at—hence the clear focus on leadership development through the Executive Leadership Circle, the relaunch of the Rising Leaders program, and the upcoming Fundamentals sessions. Our Grant Cycle remains our flagship program and offers our deepest immersive experience. In 2017, we launched a number of new programs—including our capacity-building workshop series and our community convenings—to bring even more value to local nonprofits and meet the need of our Members for greater support as they activate as engaged philanthropists.

Impact circles Most of our impact happens through the collaborative environment of what we refer to as our Circles. They bring together Full Circle Fund Members with a common interest in our four issue areas.

We have several goals for our Full Circle Fund partnership but the biggest is understanding how to pitch and structure deals with companies that want our technology.Member Jon Relyea taught us how to begin getting value out of partnerships even *before* they’re signed.” – Gavin McCormick, Co-Founder WattTime, 2017 Grantee Environment & Energy Circle

Education We find and partner with inspiring education leaders who are answering important questions about how to make education work better for each student. Over the years, we have partnered with educators and administrators, entrepreneurs and union leaders, policymakers and philanthropists, journalists and researchers. This mix of perspectives is part of what makes participating in Full Circle Fund exciting, unique and enriching for Members.

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY We look for inspirational and effective leaders who want to make a better life for others in need. Our focus is on encouraging entrepreneurship generally within the areas of workforce development, financial services, health, and poverty alleviation. We divide our efforts between Bay Area and local internationally focused organizations. Ultimately, we hope that the ideas and organizations in which we invest can be scaled by larger funders.

2015 ENIVORNMENT & ENERGY MEMBER SURVEY

We aim high and broad – there are many avenues to work towards a solution for our environment. We have partnered with organizations that focus on cleantech and alternative energy, urban sustainable development, green jobs, global warming and climate change, water conservation, and environmental health and social justice. This list is certainly not exhaustive. We strive to identify the most promising and effective organizations that are making a dent in issues that impact our environment.

HEALTH When we formed our health Circle, it was a direct response to the changing regulatory environment in the healthcare space. Over the years, we have supported not only organizations that focus on systematic changes, but also direct service providers and nonprofits that foster individual health and community wellness by means that aren’t always related to healthcare. 9

programming Full Circle Fund brings together changemakers to both learn and do. With over 50 events a year, it’s easy to find a way to engage. Our beyond-the-dollar approach helps community-based organizations connect directly & effectively with key stakeholders to shape innovative solutions.

ANNUAL GRANT CYCLE

Year-long Member-led grantmaking & consulting cycle We select several organizations annually, award a financial grant of approximately $15,000, and define a project or initiative to complete over the course of six to seven months. When an organization joins the Full Circle Fund portfolio, we call them a Grant Partner. The work we do is based on the needs of our Grant Partner and the abilities of our Members. We’ve incubated new ideas; served as a brain trust; advanced organizations to scale; or in some cases, written the first check and gave an idea a chance in this competitive space. Common areas of support from our Members include strategic planning, marketing, business development, fundraising, product development and general organizational development. .

CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS Bi-monthly facilitated strategic consulting opportunities

Our capacity-building workshops are sessions designed to give busy nonprofits more support as they work to address their unique strategic challenges. These opportunities also give our network the opportunity to quickly and effectively give back using their professional skills. Sessions included:

࢝࢝ 4 Issue Specific Workshops ࢝࢝ 1 Non-technical Hackathon

COMMUNITY CONVENINGS

Community gatherings with talks from leaders plus networking Every year, Full Circle Fund convenes experts, thought leaders, and social entrepreneurs to learn about issues, policy trends, opportunities, and organizations making a difference. These community events provide a forum for Full Circle Fund Members and the greater community to increase awareness of issues relevant to our Circle focus areas, exchange ideas, and learn about how to most effectively engage to build a better Bay Area. Hundreds attended our events in person and we reached more than 10,000+ viewers online via our livestreams. Sessions included:

We now serve over 750 unhoused men and women a year with almost 50 staff members and growing. Our goal is to end homelessness in our lifetime: one community at a time. Vision: The East Bay is a leader for innovative and accessible bikeways and streets that meet the needs of all users. Bicycling is a mainstream, comfortable and safe choice for people of all cultures, ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Bicycles are well integrated into the transportation system and are a key part of our thriving communities. Project: Full Circle Fund partnered with Bike East Bay to support the implementation of the Southside Pilot Transit-Bike Project, which sought to educate community members on the value of leaving their car keys at home through a multi-modal roadway redesign of Bancroft Way in Berkeley. The Full Circle Fund team spearheaded various community engagement efforts, including an educational video and surveys, to increase awareness of better transit options.

WATTTIME Mission: WattTime’s mission is to raise awareness about the potential to reduce environmental harm by shifting electricity use to particular times, and to encourage the development and spread of common protocols for this practice. Project: WattTime has successfully developed software to identify “what times” the clean energy waste is occurring, in real time, which allows storage companies to reduce emissions. The Reach Institute develops and supports teachers and educational leaders who are committed to creating and sustaining effective urban schools.

Project: Niroga has been extremely successful in reducing trauma-induced stress of students and teachers within the classroom, and in the next few years, aims to reach a million children. To meet that goal, they must in turn increase the number of teachers they partner with. The Full Circle Fund Niroga Team redesigned the online training course signup flow to increase teacher signups and reduce teacher burnout.

HEALTH 3RD STREET YOUTH CENTER & CLINIC Mission: The mission of 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic is to help youth from Bayview Hunters Point make healthy and safe decisions that improve their physical, emotional, and social health, empowering them to become successful, engaged adults. Project: While 3rd Street is hugely impactful to the surrounding community, this organization with a staff of 8 and increasing demand for its services is ready to scale. The 3rd Street Full Circle Fund team developed a fundraising plan to aid in the successful transition from fiscally sponsored status to that of an independent 501C3 organization, and collaborated with key constituents to refine 3rd Street’s core messaging as it seeks to draw more funders. Deliverables:

࢝࢝ Fundraising Plan

࢝࢝ Revised Core Messaging

࢝࢝ Succession Planning Recommendations

We are extremely grateful and excited to be working with Full Circle Fund. What 3rd Street needs is a fundraising plan and exposure to broader funders. This assessment and plan will identify our strengths and weaknesses in our fundraising and help determine if and when we will be ready to become an independent 501(c)(3).” Joi Jackson Morgan, Executive Director 3rd Street Youth Center & Clinic 2017 Grantee, Health Circle 15

membership Similar to our programmatic evolution in 2017, wevvre-envisioned Full Circle Fund’s Membership model to better serve changemakers from all walks and stages of life. The charts below highlight two important trends. In September, we launched our new Nimble Membership, designed for those who want the support of the network, but who will focus their philanthropic efforts with other organizations. This new Membership type along with the rebirth of our Rising Leaders program has helped us make cross-generational collaboration a focus for the organization. Additionally, our new scholarship program has helped Full Circle Fund shift our Membership to foster deeper cross-sector collaborations between the private and the public sectors.
