Keynote Speaker Shawn A-in-chut Atleo is a Hereditary Chief

from the Ahousaht First Nation A-in-chut who was elected in 2009 as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations. He was re-elected receiving an overwhelming majority of support from First Nations across Canada in 2012 for a second consecutive term.

Advancing a vision of supporting and enabling the success of every First Nation on the basis of their rights and responsibilities, National Chief Atleo took forward a bold plan of action and engagement with all sectors of Canadian society. First Nations from across Canada supported A-in-chut in confirming education as a top priority for the Assembly. A-in-chut is a tireless advocate for First Nations with federal, provincial and territorial leaders, corporations and civil society, nationally and internationally. Previously, A-in-chut served two terms as Regional Chief for First Nations across British Columbia. Committed to the principles of working together through inclusion and respect, he forged the historic Leadership Accord among First Nation leadership in B.C. in 2005 as well as advancing and achieving the Transformative Change Accord between First Nations and both the federal and provincial Governments. In 2008, A-in-chut’s commitment to education was recognized in his appointment as Chancellor of Vancouver Island University, becoming B.C.’s first Indigenous Chancellor. His leadership and contribution has been recognized through twelve Honourary Doctorates of Laws from Universities throughout Canada. In February, 2012, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his advocacy work on behalf of First Nations across Canada and the INDSPIRE award for Indigenous leadership in education in 2013. In 2014, A-in-chut was named the first Distinguished Fellow of the William A. The Fulbright Program Fulbright is a scholarship program created to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, through the medium of educational and cultural exchange.

The program was conceived by Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright, a Rhodes Scholar and one of the great statesmen of the 20th Century. It was carried forward by the Fulbright Act of 1946, and expanded in the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961 (the Fulbright-Hays Act). Today, the Fulbright Program has become the largest and most prestigious academic exchange program in the world. Operating in more than 155 countries, the Fulbright Program is a highly competitive scholarship program, and has produced over 325,000 extraordinary alumni. “Our future is not in the stars but in our minds and hearts. Creative leadership and liberal education, which in fact go together, are the first requirements for a hopeful future for humankind. Fostering these -- leadership, learning, and empathy between cultures -- was and remains the purpose of the international scholarship program. Senator J. William Fulbright 3

Fulbright Canada A unique private sector-public sector partnership, the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America was founded in February 1990 through an executive agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States. Established with a mandate to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries, the Foundation engages students, researchers, teachers, and scholars from both countries in high-level academic exchange; encourages scholarship on issues of primary importance to the two countries; promotes and supports public discourse and public participation; and facilitates the development of long-term institutional partnerships.

Fulbright Canada through the years... Elli Hanson, Canadian Killam Student 2012-2013 University of Alberta to the University of Southern California

“The Killam Fellowships Program was definitely a life changing experience for me. It has provided me with an outstanding educational experience, which has led me to grow and learn more in this short amount of time than in the culmination of my undergratudate degree. Through this opportunity I have become a part of a network of incredible individuals and lifelong friends.” Clint Davis, Canadian Fulbright Student 2000-2001 Dalhousie University to Harvard University

“I believe that the aim of the Fulbright program, to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, is being realized. During my experience, I learned a tremendous amount about the United States.”

Jared Sexton, American Fulbright Scholar 2012-2013 University of California at Irvine to York University

“My Fulbright Canada experience has played a transfomative role in my life. I have developed lasting working relationships with colleagues at my host institution and neighboring universities, and have been exposed to new areas of research. As a result, my approach to teaching and research has been invaluably altered.”

Catherine Kreatsoulas, Canadian Fulbright Student 2011-2012 McMaster University to Harvard University

“My Fulbright Canada experience has been life changing! The exchange itself is far more powerful than the confines of the project. The learning component is multifaceted, acquiring new academic skills while navigating a new environment and culture, has been invaluable to me.” 8

Alumni Leadership Programs

Fulbright Canada boasts an active and engaged alumni who are leaders in their respective fields and champions in their local communities. Fulbright Canada works closely with our alumni to engage and support projects that benefit the communities where we live and work.

Fulbright Canada – RBC Eco-Leadership Program (ELP)

provides small grants to both individuals and groups of Fulbright Canada students, scholars, and alumni, allowing them to undertake a volunteerbased community action program which is driven by a desire to engage with their home and/or host community in a way which will make a difference in supporting and sustaining the environment.

Fulbright Canada – US Embassy in Canada Community Leadership Program (CLP) provides grants to groups of Fulbright

students and scholars, along with the alumni of all USG programs in Canada, allowing them to undertake a volunteer-based community action project that will support and sustain the communities where they are taking up their award. 9

Killam Fellowships The Killam Fellowships Program allows undergraduate students from Canada and the United States to participate in a program of binational residential exchange. This program, administered by the Foundation, is supported by the American Killam Trusts, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and the Foundation. It is an integral part of the Foundation’s multidimensional strategy to foster mutual understanding between Canada and the United States of America.
