KAJISHIKA
Once a popular yatai, Kajishika reopened as a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Naraya-machi in 2017. The new shop is as popular as ever, with locals and out-oftown visitors who keep coming back for the veggie skewers, fresh seafood and original items, like fruit skewers. The sashimi is also surprisingly reasonable. If you don’t know what to order, try the course. Ingredients change depending on supply and the season. “I want everyone to eat good food. Foreign guests are welcome to let us know what they can’t eat, so we can adjust,” says manager Katsuhiko Shimomura. The shop’s colorful decor is a feast for the eyes. Sit at the counter and watch as staff whip up dishes, or relax in the tatami room.

NIWAKAYA CHOSUKE
Niwakaya Chosuke, which opened in Yakuin nine years ago and now has branches and sister shops in Fukuoka and Tokyo, was amongst the pioneers of the udon bar phenomenon. The noodles, made from 100% Itoshima flour, are bouncy with an airy mouthfeel—a quality typical of Hakata udon—but they also boast a firm texture much like the renowned Sanuki style from Kagawa Prefecture. To bring out the wheaty aroma of the noodles, a rich, clear broth is carefully crafted from Rausu kelp from Hokkaido, sardines, and mackerel flakes. A popular dish in summer is the sudachi kake udon, cold noodles in cold soup topped with thinly sliced sudachi citrus. The tangy, aromatic citrus piques the appetite while striking a balance with the light, flavorful broth. Being an udon bar, you can also choose to snack and imbibe local sake before finishing off the evening with a bowl of noodles.

타나바타 축제
수예, 학업 성취 등의 바람을 종이에 써서 기도를 올리는 타나바타. 하코자키구에서는 어린이들의 학업 및 서예 향상, 일본과 하카타의 문화 발전을 기원하며 약 15평이 넘는 크기의 종이에 길이 3m, 무게 8kg짜리 큰 붓으로 글씨를 쓰는 퍼포먼스가 열린다.

This February, a stylish new standing bar put out its shingle in the chic Nishi-nakasu neighborhood. The bar, Okuto, takes its name from the Latin word for ‘eight’, and its symbol is the two tables made from 800-year-old zelkova trees arranged in a figure eight. The interior features bonsai trees, art and BTH speakers from the 1930s, but drinks start at a reasonable ¥500. You can try local sake and shochu, toast your friends with champagne or enjoy a sweet glass of flower-infused Felice. Open till 4 am so you can stop by before the Yamakasa—the manager runs every year!

올 2월에 오픈한 스탠딩 바. 추정 수령 800 년짜리 느티나무 고목으로 만든 대형 테이블이 숫자 8 모양으로 설치되어 있는데 라틴어로 8 을 의미하는 오쿠토가 가게명인 만큼 상징적인 존재라 할 수 있다. 각종 소품으 로 세련된 분위기를 연출하고 있음에도 불구하고 음료는 500엔부터 만나볼 수 있어 부담 없이 즐길 수 있다. 오너는 무려 10대 때부터 야마카사에 참가해왔다고 하니 야마카사의 관전 포인트 등을 물어봐도 좋을 것이다. 아침 4시까지 열려있어 축제로 떠들썩한 하카타의 밤 문화를 제대로 즐길 수 있다.

This March, a new coffee and craft beer cafe opened in a renovated old house on a back street in Gofuku-machi. With beans sourced from Single O Japan, an outlet of a Sydney roaster, the cafe offers a range of coffee drinks prepared to your liking. “I wanted to create a space where anyone can come and relax,” says owner Tomoko Anekawa. Feeling peckish? Try a hot sandwich or Tomoko’s mom’s handmade sweets. The cafe is the only place in Kyushu where you can sample Ukishima Beer from Okinawa. With a shop sharing arrangement, the cafe becomes Sake Bar 529 Gofuku at night.

Some like the sea, others the mountains. Architect Izumi Kashiwagi likes both, that’s why he and his wife selected Itoshima Peninsula as their home and location for their restaurant. Facing the east, diners enjoy a view of the nearby fishing port, Shikanoshima, Nokonoshima, and shoreline of Fukuoka City. Sit outside on the terrace or gaze out the large windows and time just slips away. Open only for lunch four days a week and dinner by advance reservation only, the Kashiwagis (and their pet goat) are enjoying the slow life. And that is reflected in their kitchen too. As much as possible,
they use vegetables and herbs from their garden and call on neighborhood farmers or fishers to supply the rest. Kashiwagi is particularly proud of his San Marzano tomatoes and hopes to farm his own mussels in the sea someday. Meanwhile, the seafood green curry (served only in summer)

Welcome to Yamakasa - Welcome to Fukuoka! You’ve probably already spotted some half-naked men running around town. These men in loincloths are participants in Fukuoka’s most anticipated annual festival, Hakata Gion Yamakasa. The highlight of the festival kicks off at exactly 4:59 am on July 15, when thousands of men from seven districts race through the streets carrying decorative, one-ton floats. Spectators line the streets cheering them on by shouting “Oisa! Oisa!” and splashing them with water to keep them cool. Although the teams are timed, the event is not considered a race. The most successful team must exhibit cooperation and solidarity. This teamwork is not limited to just the runners. Local townspeople also participate by preparing for the festival and building floats almost a year in Jikatabi advance. We hope you’ll find this Split-toed shoes special map of use on the morning of the 15th. Don’t sleep in, and if you Kakinawa Rope used to wrap around bring a camera, have a plastic bag the float’s timbers handy because it gets really wet!

Since the final Oiyama race is spread out over a 5 km route, there’s no bad place to watch the event, but here’s our top tips on where to get the best view:
Take It All In
Try Higashimachi-suji, the street parallel to Taihaku-dori: it slopes down toward the port, so a spot near the bottom at the intersection with Meiji-dori allows for a nice view of the floats coming from quite a distance away. Be careful, though, as the street is quite narrow!
Double the Fun
The intersection of Showa-dori and Taihaku-dori is a good place to see the floats more than once. Catch them a second time as they race down parallel streets.
Gentlemen, Start Your Floats
If you want to watch the race from the starting line, stake out a spot in front of Kushida Shrine no later than 4 am (the earlier the better). After watching three or four starts, move to another place along the route for a different view.
Avoid the Crush
If you hate crowds or can’t manage waking up so early, try and catch one of the pre-Oiyama race events. Usually held in the late afternoon hours, they are less crowded than Oiyama. The stronger afternoon light also makes it easier to capture the action on camera.
