The 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale 2014

F

irst held in 1999, this year marks the fifth iteration of the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (FT5 for short). The international exhibition is held under a different theme every three years to showcase the most promising artists from across Asia. Highly acclaimed both in Japan and around the world for its focus on contemporary Asian art, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum aims to create a space of art exchange between Fukuoka and Asia through the event. This year’s Fukuoka Triennale also

FUKUOKA TRIENNALE “ARTIST IN RESIDENCE” PROGRAM

commemorates the 15th anniversary of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. The exhibitions feature paintings, sculptures, installations, films and other artworks from around Asia, and some artists visit Fukuoka to create joint works, hold workshops, and give lectures. This year, over 40 artists from 21 countries and regions are scheduled to participate in the triennale, including several first-time Japanese artists; the exhibition will feature many new works in the fields of video, photography, design, and media art.

Along with the exhibition, the Fukuoka Triennale also runs a special “Artist in Residence” program and various art exchange events with the local people. This year, around 20 FT5 artists and groups from Asia are invited to participate in the program.

We sat down with three of the artists (and also this month’s cover models!) currently in Fukuoka on the FT5 Artist-in-Residence program. All three artists are participating in the 5th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale from 9/6 (Sat.) ~ 11/30 (Sun.) at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. Read the full interviews online.

PRILLA TANIA プリラ・タニア (INDONESIA) Prilla Tania lives and works in her hometown of Bandung, Indonesia.

She works across a range of mediums, often utilising everyday objects to make a statement about global environmental issues. For FT5, Prilla is working with recycled Duplex - a packaging box from which she maps the cycle of energy production, consumption and disposal.

MEHREEN MURTAZA メヘリーン・ ムルターザ (SAUDI ARABIA) Mehreen Murtaza is a Pakistani female artist from Saudi Arabia who is new-generation Sci-fi enthusiast. Mehreen finally unveils her large art project, which she has been working on, in collaboration with the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum at FT5, as well as a performance piece and a selection of digital prints that relate to futurism. AGI CHEN チェン・イージエ (TAIWAN) Agi Chen lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan where she works in digital graphics, paintings and animation. In the mixed-media project “United Islands” Agi transforms famous cartoon characters into concentric circles or “color wheels”, based on participant request.

Darrell Smith

D

arrell Smith is Fukuoka’s Piano Man, regularly finding his audience “in the mood for a melody”. Born in Japan to American missionary parents, he spent one year in California for every four years in Fukuoka and Japan. Music was always a huge part of life - first being exposed to gospel music in church, his interest expanded through childhood (when he spent his monthly allowance on records by UK artists such as U2 and The Cure).

Playing saxophone and piano in school, Darrell was 20 when landed his first professional gig in Fukuoka. But it was an eleven-year stint at the Fukuoka Grand Hyatt that’s to thank for his nickname “Pianoman” - a nod to Billy Joel, whose hit song was requested perhaps a few too many times. Nowadays Darrell’s busy schedule includes playing at weddings, voice-over and narration jobs, songwriting for commercials, radio presenting, and preparing for the release of his third solo album “Oceanside”. Being Darrell’s first time to release a full-length collection of all-original material, the album has been a personal journey six years in the making. Each Monday, Darrell hosts TENJIN UNITED on LOVE FM 76.1 - a show for which he personally selects all the music.

Besides performing on stage, it’s his next favorite thing. His new CD “Oceanside” will be launched with a live show on Sep. 13 (Sat.) 18:30~ at Resola NTT Yume-Tenjin Hall.

A flashy red-carpet opening ceremony kicks off the 24th edition of this yearly film festival in which 39 films from 18 Asian countries and regions are screened over ten days. This year’s festival shines a spotlight on Taiwanese films, and includes 7 films about ukiyoe artists.

映画監督、脚本家、日本と中東で の活動家として、日本映画史の中 でひときわ物議を醸す人物、足立 正生。福岡出身の彼は、50年超 の経歴において、実験映画、ピン ク映画、ドキュメンタリーをつく り、彼の脚本は大島渚、エリッ ク・ボードレールによっても作品 化されている。日本の前衛的映画 の象徴である足立の作品上映や、 足立本人の上映後セッションなど 類希なる機会をお見逃しなく。

アジア各地からの参加者も鑑賞で きるよう、日本語と英語の字幕付 きで、18カ国・地域の全39作品 が上映される。今年の見どころ は2本の新作含む台湾映画大特集 と、浮世絵に関連した7作品の日 本映画特集。初日はゲストとレッ ドカーペットが登場する華やかな オープニングセレモニーも開催さ れる（観覧無料）。

「焼きとり店密集地・久留米」 の名物イベントは、毎年4万人 を超える人々が県内外から来場 し、子どもも大人もみんなが楽 しめる。今年は「日本一の久留 米焼きとりと筑後の地酒！世界 を目指す！」をテーマに、14店 舗が出店。各店自慢の串を300円 〜500円で販売する。恒例の筑後 18蔵の地酒の飲み比べも開催。 売切れになるメニューも多いの で早めに来場しよう。

This 1,000 year-old festival is one of the “big three” in Hakata and a great way to welcome Autumn.

The 1km approach to Hakozaki Shrine is lined with around 500 busy stalls. Locals purchase fresh ginger and Hojoya hajiki a ceramic made by Hakata Doll artisans.

Back for its 12th year, this twoday festival draws crowds of 40,000 yakitori-lovers. 14 yakitori booths and 18 sake breweries fill the park with dishes priced between ¥300 ~ ¥500. Considered by some to be among the best yakitori in Japan, they sell out quickly, so don’t be late!

◊ Asian Party 2014 Asian Party, a series of creative events rooted in Fukuoka's exchange with Asia to date, will begin in September. Key events include the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (9/6~11/30), the Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival (9/12~21), Asian Pacific Festival Fukuoka 2014 (10/11~13), The Creators (10/10) and the Fukuoka Prize public lectures and award ceremony (9/17~21). Asian Party aims to stimulate creativity and create business opportunities by gathering people, things and ideas from Asia in one place.

◊ Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival 2014

◊ Central Park and Fukuoka Castle Ruins Master Plans Fukuoka City is deliberating a Central Park Plan that would connect Ohori and Maizuru parks and provide citizens with recreational areas as well as spaces to experience the city's history and culture.

The plan calls for the installation of paths

that would enable better access between the parks, the establishment of various walking courses and a new event space with castle vistas. Meanwhile, the Fukuoka Castle Ruins Master Plan aims to make Maizuru Park a centerpiece of the city by restoring the stone walls and buildings of the Fukuoka Castle complex.

YIPEE! FOR FREE! Fukuoka International Film Festival Opening Ceremony The opening ceremony for the Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival will be held at 19:00 on 9/12 (Fri.) at the Sun Plaza Stage (Canal City Hakata, B1). A special red carpet will be rolled out for actors and directors from around Asia.

For 23 years, Fukuoka has hosted an annual festival showcasing outstanding films from Asia. Most of the featured films are being screened in Japan for the first time, and they will be subtitled in both English and Japanese, so they can be enjoyed by participating guests from around Asia, international students and other foreigners. This year, 39 films from 18 countries and regions will be shown at United Cinemas Canal City 13 and other venues.

◊ Fukuoka Music Month Having produced numerous musicians, Fukuoka is a city with a rich musical history.

Starting this September, the following major music events will join forces to promote the city's musical heritage far and wide in a new endeavor dubbed Fukuoka Music Month: (1) Sunset Live 2014 (9/5~7), (2) Nakasu Jazz 2014 (9/12~13), (3) Kyushu Gospel Festival 2014 in Hakata (9/14~15), (4) FMF presents: Asia Music Found 2014 (9/14~15) and (5) Music City Tenjin 2014 (9/21, 23, 27 & 28).
