Suginoko ODEN AND LOCAL CUISINE IN JR HAKATA CITY

hen the cold winter winds descend upon the archipelago, the Japanese seek warmth in a seasonal standby: oden. For some, the boiled fare may evoke an image of a snack to accompany an old man’s cup of hot sake, but that's no longer

the case. One trip to Suginoko is proof that oden is evolving. Suginoko uses flying fish for its broth, which makes for a lightly-flavored oden that you just can't get enough of. In addition to typical ingredients, such as daikon, konyaku and chikuwa, you can also try some more creative oden. The tomato oden, which uses a specially-seasoned broth, comes topped with olive oil and parsley for a delightful fusion of east and west. Don't forget to try the gyorokke, a fried fish croquette topped with oden broth, and the teppanyaki oden—oden roasted on a hot iron griddle and topped with sweet miso. With its prime location directly above JR Hakata Station, Suginoko attracts many tourists, and it caters to them with a wide range of local Kyushu dishes. For some of these hafus Japan is the only home they know, for some living in Japan is an entirely new experience, and others are caught somewhere between two different worlds. Narrated by the hafus themselves, along with candid interviews and cinéma vérité footage, the viewer is guided through a myriad of hafu experiences that are influenced by upbringing, family relationships, education, and even physical appearance. As the film interweaves five unique life stories, audiences discover the depth and diversity of hafu personal identities. What does it mean to be hafu?; What does it mean to be Japanese?; and ultimately, What does all of this mean for Japan?

ith an ever increasing movement of people between places in this transnational age, there is a growing number of mixed-race people in Japan, some visible others not. According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, one in forty-nine babies born in Japan today are born into families with one non-Japanese parent. This newly emerging minority in Japan is under-documented and under-explored in both literature and media. his month we checked in with Chonnakarn Akrapreedee, who landed her first job with Thai Airways International in 2000, following a short stopover at Star Alliance in Frankfurt. She is now General Manager, South Japan of Thai Airways in Fukuoka where she is in charge of making sure ticket sales take off for their daily flights to and from Bangkok. Recent Japanese visa relaxations have meant an average 30~35% rise in the number of inbound travellers, but her main objective is to promote business trips and holidays to Thailand: she recommends the Chiang Mai mountains, which are ‘like Kyushu, but with elephants you can ride’. A company bonenkai usually begins with a greeting by the boss in which he or she thanks staff for their work and speaks positively about the coming year. Then the drinking and eating starts and colleagues pour for each other endlessly. The crowd gets a little rowdy and speeches, karaoke, or skits begin - ranging from embarrassing to very clever. Impersonations of the boss or others usually draw laughs and are fortunately quickly forgotten. Nobody knows why, but more than one guy ends up wearing his necktie around his head.

that includes bus, train and subway access to major sites in and around the city as well as Dazaifu. A one-year trial of the Fukuoka Downtown Double Pass also began. This pass is ¥12,000/month and provides all-you-can-ride access to central destinations on the Nishitetsu Omuta Line (Fukuoka~Takamiya) and regular buses within the city center area. It's now more convenient than ever for visitors and residents to get around the city on public transport.

¹ Park-and-Ride

◊ New City Transportation Passes On Oct. 1 Nishinippon Railroad, JR Kyushu, Showa Bus and the City Transportation Bureau began selling the Fukuoka Tourist City Pass, a one-day ticket for foreign visitors

Park-and-Ride, a system of parking lots near train stations and bus stops for people transferring to public transport, aims to alleviate traffic jams and reduce CO2 emissions. City Hall has teamed up with three local shopping centers to provide park-and-ride service using their large parking lots: (1) Aeon Mall Fukuoka Ito (¥4,000/mo./0120-02-8924 (Times 24 Co.)), (2) Konoha Mall Hashimoto (¥6,500/ mo./092-407-2800), (3) Aeon Mall Kashiihama (available with purchase of ¥5,000 gift certificate/092-673-6100).

◊ Clothes and Books Recycle If you have old clothes and books that are still in usable condition, please drop them off at the Seibu 3R Station (1043-2 Imajukuaoki, Nishi-ku / 092-882-3190; Open: Tue~Sun, 10:00~16:30/Closed: Mondays and days following national holidays). Used items are put on display and given to people who want them.

◊ Late Night Subways in December The last trains on the city subway will run about 30 minutes later than usual on Fridays in December (12/6, 12/13, 12/20, 12/27). Call the Subway Customer Center (092-734-7800) for last train times at each station.

◊ Charity Baseball Fest Come join some SoftBank Hawks players for a fun-filled baseball event at Seibu Undo Park on 12/21 (Sat), 10:00~13:00. Autographed baseballs and other equipment will be auctioned off, with a portion of the proceeds going to local child welfare facilities. Applications are being accepted on a first come, first served basis by telephone (092-811-5625) and online (www.kofu-field. com/seibu/).
