Bistrot Robert et Louise Red Meat, Wine and Good Times

pened in November 2012, Bistrot Robert et Louise serves up lean beef, pork, duck and lamb roasted to perfection in a wood-fired kiln. Owner-chef Kyosuke Harada is a meat-lover, and he got

the idea for his bistro from his favorite restaurant in Paris. Harada also runs Bistrot Paul Bert in Befu (Jonan-ku), but he left the shop to a trusted chef so he could open this oneman bistro. Almost everyone orders Robert's famous steak and fries, which uses free range U.S. Angus beef and comes with homemade bread and a salad. Harada sears the steak in a frying pan before putting it in the oven and adds the finishing touches in the wood-fired kiln. Once ordered, it takes about 50 minutes to roast the meat, but as you enjoy appetizers, wine and conversation with Chef Harada, the time passes before you realize it. Laden with bouillon, the juicy steak has almost no fat. According to Harada, even female customers can finish the one pound

Notes from an Overstayer Shayne Bowden, Australia, Teacher/Sound Artist

I

n Daimyo at night there are many people in the streets giving out flyers to attempt to attract customers to their nearby restaurants. Business is competitive in this area, and lately you might have noticed restaurant staff running after people with iPads showing customers their menus. They seem to be getting quite aggressive of late, with Nakasu-esque pursue and snare tactics, and it seems anyone’s fair game to the tabletswinging punter-gatherers... well, most are anyway. I find that I get a wide berth as I make my way home near Daimyo as those fishing for business tend to retract the hand holding the flyer, look the other way and awkwardly fall silent. I cannot recall a time when this has not happened. Not that I want to be bothered by such people on the way home, but I wonder why the thought of a gaijin being approachable like everyone else is so... foreign. Maybe

FUKUOKA

it’s because they assume I don’t speak Japanese. Maybe it’s because they assume that I’m just a passing tourist. Maybe they don’t want foreign customers. I think it’s a mix of these factors. I’d like to support local small business if possible, find a cool place for food and a few drinks after a shitty day, maybe even have a chat about something other than answering the usual ‘gaijin 20 questions’. I’d especially like to support my local community, where I live and pay taxes like everyone else. Even though many places are hurting for business, it seems that local businesses are not interested in foreign customers. This lack of common/business sense in Fukuoka exists much to the detriment of its local economies. It’s a shame because there is a lot on offer, but unfortunately not to everyone. Many foreign residents know this story, right? I’m sure that many have had similar

experiences of 'micro aggressive' behavior where foreigners are treated differently because they are simply not Japanese, such as the flyer snub or the patronizing language flattery or any behavior or comment that seeks to reinforce difference by way of compliment. Anyway, let’s cut to the chase. What I’m trying to get to here is that it seems that in Japan, what many foreign residents would consider to be xenophobic and racist behavior and attitudes are encouraged and championed as a way of justifying a supposed homogenous society. An educational system where some canned coffee/tobacco stinking elementary school teacher can espouse the finer points of Nihonjinron, justifying the single race argument of a group of people that foreigners can ultimately have no understanding of. The result of this is that even a nihongo-packin long-term foreign resident is continually considered as an outsider, and therefore, troublesome. Troublesome to the point of not being worth the risk of inviting back to some overpriced izakaya in Daimyo. One could argue that this is just the way it is here, and ‘if you don’t like it, then leave’.

The apologists love saying that. "Nihonjin dakara... It’s because I’m Japanese that [insert the rest of any excuse to discriminate or cop out here]" argument can only go so far. Japan will lose out with this race excuse card in the end. But logic does not prevail here- nonsense does instead and it's kind of pathetic that in Japan people can huddle under a well worn patch-worked blanket that is a supposed homogenous society when using race as an excuse to discriminate. When confronted with such tomfoolery, I try to offer a light-hearted but sharp retort - nothing nasty, but enough to trip up the mindset slightly. For all those getting worked up about empty train seats, anonymous "Haros!" and other such shenanigans, try and remember that Japan is not going to change for you. And so, why should you change for Japan? Maybe when Japan has earned a few basic brownie points (such as adequate and substantial laws that address racism and discrimination), foreign residents might consider making more of an effort. These are just a few personal random thoughts that you are free to agree or

disagree with… perhaps triggered by the cute girl who wouldn't give me a flyer. One's mind is a blur after 15 years experience of being an ‘outside person’. I like living in Fukuoka even though it’s increasingly becoming a love/ hate type of situation. Nonetheless, I’d like to encourage people to make their own way through their experiences of Japan - never mind the stereotypical expectations of you, but try to forge an individual presence without compromise. Foreigners living here enjoy few of the basic rights they might consider to be the norm in other countries and treated merely as tourists, but the very existence of foreigners here is a micro-action in itself, that will inevitably bring change.

hile his finance-major classmates went on to work in banks and security companies in Taiwan, Yu Ping Tseng holds the title of General Manager of China Airlines’ Kyushu/Yamaguchi branch. Although he began without interest in planes Yu Ping has spent the past 14 years in the industry, which he describes as “interesting and dynamic”. Starting out in the airline’s Economic Analysis Department, he progressed through many roles before taking on his current GM status in Fukuoka two years ago. He recalls his most unusual task while working in the Aircraft Management Department, where he was put in charge selling an unused airplane. The job included a trip with potential buyers to view the plane in the desert in USA before he proudly sold it to FedEx. With lots of aircraft knowledge, along with his finance background and experience in route management, Yu Ping now heads up the team in Fukuoka. He is currently focused on pushing China Airlines’ web sales- offering special online promotions to build a deeper, more direct relationship with customers. Another project he holds dear is a chartered flight for school excursions from Kyushu to Taipei, in an effort to strengthen cultural ties between the two regions. As a foreigner in Fukuoka, Yu Ping is grateful for the great personal relationships he continues to build. China Airlines flies from Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Miyazaki. Motorbiking in Kyushu

Text and photos By Greg O’Keefe

Road to Mt. Aso, Kumamoto

The Ride “A cool crisp morning with the sun dancing around us as we cut our way through to the top of the mountain on our bikes. The curves are anything but forgiving, and every single hairpin reminds us there is more to learn. Every road has a personality, some are friendly and open while others are tight and unyielding. Others start out narrow and then open up into a vantage point that just exceeds what you were expecting and you and your riding buddies found it.”

Raptor Road, Kumamoto Well, that is dangerous, but that’s not what we will be talking about. Japan has a ton of country roads that just beg to be ridden. In general, Japan is a centralized society and many Japanese prefer the convenience of city life over the country, so this creates an empty countryside just waiting to be explored. Motorcycles, being smaller than cars, provide easier access to more out of the way places than you may think to go to by car. On a motorbike, you can still visit point A and B, but the inbetween is much more enjoyable.

can make the journey less personable and slower. You will meet different types of riders with different goals. Some are into food or taking in the sites, some are into riding as many beautiful roads as possible. We recommend finding roads that offer a view with as few cars as possible. You may even want to pack a bento and bring it along, so you can eat it somewhere in the countryside and just take it slow.

f you have ever thought about riding in Japan, get started, you won’t regret it. For those new to motorcycles, safety is number one. Take your time and find some people you trust to ride with. But most of all enjoy the ride. The old proverb is true. “The journey is the reward” and you won’t know it until you do it.

Fukuoka City Bulletin Selected news topics by Fukuoka Now from Fukuoka City’s Shisei Dayori

◊ Hakata Dontaku: May 3 & 4 With its origins in the over 830 year old Hakata Matsubayashi, the Hakata Dontaku Port Festival was launched in 1962 as a parade for the citizens of Fukuoka. The parade takes over 1.3 km of Meiji-dori Ave. and attracts around 20,000 participants, including popular characters from Universal Studios Japan, Hawaiian hula teams and even troupes from places like Thailand and Malaysia. The so-odori ("big dance") is held on the evening of the 4th, and anyone can join in the festivities (Dances are held at several locations along Meiji-dori Ave.) Dontaku stages will be setup at 33 locations throughout the city, including City Hall and the shopping arcades, to offer live music and other performances. Also, six bedecked train cars that first appeared in the parade when the tram line opened in the Meiji Era will get makeovers as Dontaku floats decorated with light bulbs and flowers.
