¬¬Trains 철도 There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Subway”, and “JR”. The subway links the two city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Airport. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel outside Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. 후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테쓰 전철’ ‘지하철’ ‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타, 덴진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘ 니시테쓰 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸, 가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나 신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.
¬¬Buses 버스 Go almost anywhere aboard Nishitetsu Bus in Fukuoka City! Rates vary by distance, but are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p. 5 ~ 6 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Sumiyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofukumachi. Board using the middle doors and get off using the front door. Pay as you get off. 버스 뒷문으로 타고, 앞쪽의 문으로 내린다. 운임은 내릴 때 지불.
How to ride 버스 타는 방법 ● Check the destination on the front and side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via the center doors. ● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board. If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the sensor, ticket not required. ● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the monitor next to a driver. The fee appears under the ticket number. ● Fees are displayed on the monitor above the driver. Match your ticket number to get your fee. ● Push the stop button to alert the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. ● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box next to the driver and get off from the front door. If you need change, drop cash into the box next to the driver. When you are using nimoca, wave your card above the sensor. ● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠 있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가 오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다 ● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에 정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을 때에는 승차 구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이 경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음). ● 정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로 운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권 번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다. ● 목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고 안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다. ● 운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의 운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할 때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지 않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를 갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에 카드를 터치한다.

his stylish restaurant serves the type of traditional Fukuoka food that has been loved by locals for generations. The most popular dish on the menu is, of course, Hakata
mentaiju (¥780), from which the restaurant takes its name. It consists of a box of rice topped with a layer of seaweed, on which lies spiced and salted cod roe wrapped in kelp. The cod roe are soaked in a sauce made from oyster and scallop extracts, giving them a deep umami taste, with just a hint of sesame and perilla for extra flavor. When ordering sashimi,

the accompanying soy sauce contains a dash of cod roe, which is great for those who like a touch of extra spiciness. Of course, there’s much more on the menu than just cod roe, such as the hakata zoni soup (¥680), normally only eaten at New Year, or the nukamisodaki (fish cooked in fermented rice bran, ¥980), which is a specialty of nearby Kitakyushu. As the perfect accompaniment to all this local food, there are also several varieties of locally-produced shochu. In summer, many people enjoy swimming in the sea and playing volleyball on the beach. The Marizon complex, right in the middle of the beach, has restaurants and a wedding hall. Many of the restaurants also have open terraces, so you can enjoy a wonderful sea view while you eat. From Marizon you can also catch a highspeed ferry across Hakata Bay to the resort area Uminonakamichi which takes just 20 minutes. The dolphin show there is well worth the journey. With both a resort area and a futuristic cityscape within such easy reach, Momochi will have you coming back for more again and again.

f you’ve ever read an article about Fukuoka in a guidebook or magazine, you will be familiar with Fukuoka Tower, the Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk Hotel and the Yahoo! Dome. But have you ever actually been up in that neck of the woods? The area in question, Momochi, has a short history. It was built in 1990 on reclaimed land originally used for the site of the 1989 AsiaPacific Expo. In addition to the three landmarks mentioned above, it boasts many modern tall office buildings and high class apartment buildings, creating a futuristic landscape. For great sightseeing spots, look no further than Yahoo! Dome and Fukuoka Tower. Yahoo! Dome is famous as the home of Fukuoka’s probaseball team, the Softbank Hawks, and is also the site of numerous events throughout the year. Baseball fans can take a behind-thescenes look at the stadium on one of the regularly-run tours. Fukuoka Tower, at 234m, is the highest seaside tower in Japan. JAPAN돔(야후 돔)이 보이는 풍경을 어디에선가(관광가이드북? 잡지? 포스트카드?)본 적이 없는 사람이 적지 않을까? 후쿠오카를 대표하는 이 랜드마크들이 있는 곳이 모모치 지역이다. 도시로서의 역사는 아직 짧다. 원래는 1989년에 개최된 ‘아시아 태평양 박람회’에 맞춰 조성한 매립지로 설비가 완료된 것이 1990년대. 따라서 앞서 말한 3곳의 건물 이외에도 현대적인 고층빌딩과 고급맨션이 들어서 있고, 미래적인 풍경을 구성하고 있다. 후쿠오카타워는 높이 234m를 자랑하는 일본에서 가장 높은 해변타워이다. 123m의 높이에 위치하는 5 층 전망대에서는 하카타만을 한 눈에 볼 수있다. Now Map을 지참하면 일반어른 800엔의 전망요금을 20% 할인한 640엔으로 이익. 지역의 북쪽에는 인공 해변이 뻗어 있다. 여름에는 해수욕장으로써 많은 시민으로 붐비고, 비치 발리볼을 즐기는 젊은 사람들도 많다. 해변의 정 중앙에 위치해 있는 시설 마리존에는 레스토랑과 결혼식장이 있다. 오픈 테라스를 가진 가게도 많기 때문에, 리조트 기분으로 바다를 바라보면서 식사를 즐기는 것도 추천할 만하다. 마리존에서는 하카타만을 사이에 두고 북쪽에 위치한 리조트 지역 우미노나카미치까지 직행하는 고속선이 출항하고 있다. 소요시간은 20분이므로 모모치해변에서 즐긴 후에 우미노나카미치 수족관에서 돌고래 쇼를 보는 것도 가능하다. 후쿠오카에서도 가장 현대적인 상가와 리조트가 공존하는 모모치 지역은 저녁 노을과 야경 등 아름다운 경치를 만날 수 있다. 하루에 걸쳐서도 즐거움이 끊이지 않는 매력이 넘치는 지역이다.

ong-term residents of Fukuoka will no doubt recall the magnitude 6 earthquake that hit the city in 2005. Natural disasters can strike at any time, so it is important to always be prepared. Momochi is home to the Fukuoka Disaster Prevention Center, a facility where you can experience simulated disasters to learn what to do in such a situation. The earthquake simulator can produce tremors from magnitude 1 to magnitude 7, while the typhoon simulator can create winds up to 30m/s. The facility also houses a real fire-fighting helicopter and a model recreation of the 2005 earthquake. Entry is free. Tel: 092-847-5990

동일본대지진의 충격은 아 직 가라앉지 않고 있으나, 후쿠오카에도 2 0 0 5년, 진 도 6 도 의 지 진이 엄습했었다. 지진, 화재 등 재해에 관 해서는 평소부터의 준비가 중요하다. 모모치지역에는 재해 모의 체험을 통해서 만약의 경우에 대처법을 익힐 수 있는 시설이 있다. 「후쿠오카시민방재센터」이다. 지진체험에는 진도 1에서 진도7 까지 흔들림을 재현. 태풍을 재현한 시설은 풍속 30m까지 강풍을 체험할 수 있다. 시설 내에서는 실제 진화 헬리콥터를 볼 수있고, 2005년 지진을 재현한 모형도 전시되어 있다. 입장료는 무료이다. or this issue, we met our monthly guest just as ELLE CAFÉ introduced its delicious new summer menu. Vegetable curry, petit rolled cakes, parfaits - you’re sure to find something new every time you visit. Hiwot Haileselassie Weldegebreal hails from Ethiopia. She worked as a chef until she came to Japan in 2008 to attend the opening of an Ethiopian restaurant in Fukuoka. It was her first experience of living in Japan and, although initially nervous, she was positive enough to tough it out. "It’ll work out!" she told herself - and, sure enough, it did! At home in Ethiopia, Hiwot enjoys visiting cafés to meet friends or to just relax over a cup of latte in her spare time. “It’s a more modern style of socialising,” she explains. She was pleased to visit ELLE CAFÉ, with its wide range of quality items for sale, including imported cooking ingredients.

イスラ・デ・サルサ Isla de Salsa Seaside Momochi, Jigyo-hama Back for a 15th year, this popular outdoor international festival features two days of performances by both Japanese and international artists from many different genres. Performers this year include award winning Swedish salsa orchestra Calle Real, who have been making waves in the Latin music world with their fresh take on timba music. The Brave Little Goat of Monsieur Seguin Kitakyushu Performing Arts Center Stage adaptation of Alphonse Daudet’s fairy-tale describing the adventures of a little goat who runs away from her master. Stage director Jean Lambert-Wild and graphic artist Stephane Blanquet have created a darkly beautiful and blackly comical update of this children’s classic.
Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival Moji, Shimonoseki This prefecture-spanning festival is still going after 24 years. Spectators line both banks of the Kanmon Strait to watch 13,000 fireworks, the explosions from which are also beautifully reflected in the waters below. 프랑스에서는 누구라도 알고있는 동화 를 무대화한 작품이 칸 국립극장을 통 해 일본을 첫 방문. 블랙유머를 띠는 작 풍이 주목을 끄는 그래픽 아티스트 스텐 화느 블랑께가 만들어낸 아름답고도 독 을 품은 무대 세계에 귀여운 아기 염소의 모험 이야기가 펼쳐진다.
올해로 개최 24회를 맞이하는 현을 잇는 불꽃놀이대회. 키타큐슈시 모지와 야 마 구치현 시모 노 세키에 서 공 동 개최되는 이 대회에는 모지측 70만명, 시모노세키측 45만명으로 합계 115만 명의 사람들이 모인다. 양쪽 연안에서 쏘아 올리는 약 13000발의 불꽃이 관문해협의 수면을 물들이는 모습은 과연 장관이다. 당일에는 큰 혼잡이 예상되므로 공공기관을 이용하자.

The Fukuoka City Public Library has a collection of films related to Fukuoka and those from other Asian countries. The library will show 12 well-known films from South Korea from August 3 to August 27. These films include both comedies and human interest dramas, such Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring, directed by Kim Ki-duk, who movies have been successful in the U.S., and the Public Enemy series of action films seen by seven million South Koreans. The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden will be open every Saturday night in August from 18:00 ~21:00, with final admission at 20:30 This is the perfect opportunity to see the living environment and behavior of animals at night, as well as night-blooming flowers. During the month, a free bus will run from the Sakurazaka Station on the municipal subway’s Nanakuma Line to the site’s entrance. Visitors who use the bus will receive a 20% discount on admission. The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden opened in 1953. The surrounding area is being developed in stages, with completion targeted for 2025. ◊ Heat wave precautions Heat exhaustion can be life-threatening. Take these precautions to protect your health this summer. 1. Avoid heat. Take hats or parasols with you when going outdoors, and use the curtains, fans, or air conditioners when indoors. 2. Take plenty of fluids. Drink small amounts of water even if your throat is not dry. Take extra salt if you perspire heavily. 3. Dress wisely. Wear clothing that absorbs perspiration and dries quickly. 4. Don’t overexert yourself. Skipping meals or insufficient sleep can cause heat exhaustion. Maintain proper lifestyle habits. 5. Be considerate of other group members when engaging in group activities. Shorten the time of the activity or take planned breaks.
◊ Fukuoka Tower for half price! The Fukuoka Tower, a well-loved symbol of Fukuoka City, is the highest seaside tower in Japan at 234 meters. People can visit the observation deck 123 meters above ground for a 360° panoramic view of the area that includes both the city itself and Shikanoshima. The view of the city at night is so lovely the streets seem as if they are inlaid with jewels. Those visitors who arrive in the traditional Japanese clothing of yukata or jimbei will be admitted for 400 yen, half the usual price. The Hakatamachiya Furusatokan presents the traditional lifestyles and culture of Hakata. Their Summer Festival is from Aug. 6 to Aug. 12, and will have an ennichi festival. ◊ Classical gas at ACROS Fukuoka The Fukuoka Symphony Hall in the ACROS Fukuoka facility is a state of the art concert hall for classical music. Fukuoka City co-sponsors some of the concerts with ACROS Fukuoka to provide local residents an opportunity to enjoy musical culture. The fifth Afternoon Concert will be held on Thursday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. All tickets are for general admission and cost 3,000 yen (Students: 1,500 yen, Parent & Child: 4,000 yen. All seats are reserved). The 26th Lunchtime Concert will be presented at noon on Tuesday, September 13.
