Speculation mounted when Nariaki Nakayama, who resigned from the Taro Aso Cabinet after some controversial remarks, announced he would not run for reelection from his Miyazaki District #1 seat. But Governor Higashikokubaru repeated his statement that "as of now" he has no intention to run. ホークス最下位 Hawks Finish Last The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks dropped the last game of the season to the Rakuten Golden Eagles on Tuesday night 1-0. ディズニー、福岡進出白紙へ Disney Withdraws Plan to Expand to Fukuoka Oriental Land, the company that operates Tokyo Disneyland and other amusement parks, announced its withdrawal of plans to open an indoor amusement facility. The site most likely to have been chosen was Canal City #2 in Fukuoka City. The company projected the amount required to start the facility would far exceed the original 20-30 billion yen, and they thought it would be difficult to turn a profit in the midst of a global economic downturn. 九州郵船、往復割引制度を拡大 Kyushu Yusen to Expand Round-Trip Discounts The Fukuoka City-based ferry and maritime shipping company Kyushu Yusen announced it will expand the number of round-trip discount options on its IkkiHakata and Ikki-Karatsu routes. Previously discounts were available only for the same types of ships on the same route. Now, however, passengers can choose to return by a different route and a different type of ship. ジョイフル 営業時間短縮 Joyfull to Shorten Operating Hours The Oita City-based restaurant chain Joyfull announced they will end 24-hour operations at 130 of their shops by November. The company said that customer growth is lagging due to higher gasoline prices, and revenue fell 3.4% during the first half of this year. The shorter hours will enable the chain to reduce personnel costs and utility expenses. 西九州新幹線ルートにレール敷設へ Surveying Starts for Kyushu Shinkansen Surveying work has begun for the rail placement on the 45.7 kilometer stretch between Isahaya and Takeo Onsen for the western leg of the Kyushu Shinkansen. Work finally started this April on this part of the national system for the high-speed train after 35 years of planning, and the surveying is expected to be finished in March 2009. Construction of the route, which is estimated to cost 260 billion yen, will take 10 years to complete. 福銀がユニバーサルデザイン優秀賞を受賞 Fukuoka Bank Wins Universal Design Award The Fukuoka City-based Fukuoka Bank has received an award from The Japan Sign Design Association for incorporating "universal design" into the plans for remodeling its branch offices. The bank has made the concept of user-friendly offices the basis for the remodeling program now underway. The association said the comprehensive nature of the plan, which will be implemented at all Fukuoka Bank branches, is an innovative step.

福岡市の上昇鈍化 Fukuoka City Land Price Rise Levels Off The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport released its annual report on nationwide land valuations on the 18th, which shows that the rise in land values in Fukuoka City has leveled off. For the past few years, the rise in value of commercial land in Fukuoka City was one of the steepest in the nation. The past two years have seen a double-digit percentage point increase in values, and there was a 20% increase last year, but only a 7% increase this year. This is attributed in part to the problems related to the sub-prime mortgage meltdown in the U.S. 熊本県、4 年で職員 1200 人削減へ Kumamoto Pref. to Cut 1,200 Employees Starting this year, the Kumamoto Prefecture government will eliminate the positions of at least 1,200 employees over the next four years as part of its restructuring program. It also plans to sell about 50 properties as part of the program, including the Kumamoto Kaikan, a hotel in the Roppongi district of Tokyo. The prefecture expects to pick up 67 billion yen in additional resources through this plan, but warns that after this the budget shortfall will still be roughly 6 billion yen per year. They say they are also considering cutting employee salaries. 08 年度九州・沖縄実質成長率 0.6% に Regional Growth Revised Downward to 0.6% The Kyushu Economic Research Center released its revised forecast for the real growth rate in Kyushu and Okinawa Prefecture for FY 2008. The center's new forecast calls for growth of 0.6% during the year, which represents a downward revision from their 1.6% projection issued last December. The center noted that despite a continued rise in exports, prices also rose, driven by more expensive oil, and that wage growth is sluggish, dampening consumer spending. A growth rate of 0.6% would be the lowest for the region in six years. 鹿児島中央駅前再開発、九州新幹線全通へ準備着々 Redevelopment of Kagoshima Station The redevelopment of the Kagoshima Station area is steadily proceeding with an eye to the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen Line in 2011. Local real estate developer Nangoku Corp. announced plans to erect two new buildings in the district. One will be a nine-story office building with a total floor area of 20,500 square meters. The other will be a 14-story multiple purpose building, in which the Nishi-Nihon Railroad Co. (Nishitetsu) plans to operate a hotel.

They will also handle the purchase and sale of government bonds online for individual customers. They are the first bank in Kyushu to offer such services over the Internet. 福岡市と釜山市 経済協力協議会 10 月下旬設立へ Fukuoka City, Busan Mayors Talk Economics The mayors and leaders of regional business leaders in Fukuoka City and Busan, South Korea, are planning to establish a council for economic cooperation at the end of October. Their objective is to boost economic exchange with an eye to the formation of a supraregional economic zone. The council will examine ways to create closer links between the auto industry in both regions, and the possibility of introducing smart cards for use on transportation facilities and for shopping.

Office The Nagasaki Prefecture general assembly has formed a committee to discuss the site for new government offices, which has become an issue in the prefecture. Some also think that the new offices should be located in a more centralized area of the prefecture, such as Isahaya. The committee's deliberations might result in a change in prefectural policy. 響灘工業団地、売却面積 9 割越す Occupants Fill Up Kitakyushu Industrial Park The city of Kitakyushu has been successfully attracting tenants to its waterfront Hibikinada Industrial Park, one of the largest in Kyushu. Four companies have relocated to the park already this year, and more than 90% of the space in the park is sold. Though the park was opened in 1989, interest in relocation there soared after a container terminal was built nearby.

(Nishitetsu) announced that the use of its nimoca contactless payment card is now possible in the Kitakyushu area. The card can be used for payment on eight bus routes in the area, as well as four interurban bus routes between Kokura and Fukuoka City. The company plans to expand card usage on all 49 bus routes in the area by the end of the first half of FY 2009. 長崎大、残業代を労基署が是正勧告 Nagasaki University to Pay Two Years' Overtime The Nagasaki office of a government department responsible for the oversight of labor standards has issued a recommendation to Nagasaki University to reimburse employees for two years worth of uncompensated overtime work. These employees include teachers at an affiliated primary and junior high school, and doctors and nurses at an affiliated hospital. The aggregate total of the compensation runs to 73 million yen, and will be added to the employees' wages for the month of October.
