¬ trains 철도 There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Subway”, and “JR”. The subway links the two city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Airport. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel outside Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima. 후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테츠 전철’ ‘지하철’ ‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타, 텐진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘ 니시테츠 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸, 가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나 신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.
¬ Buses 버스 Go almost anywhere aboard Nishitetsu Bus in Fukuoka City! Rates vary by distance, but are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p. 4 ~ 5 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Su-miyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofukumachi. Board using the middle doors and get off using the front door. Pay as you get off. 버스 뒷문으로 타고, 앞쪽의 문으로 내린다. 운임은 내릴 때 지불.
How to ride 버스 타는 방법 ● Check the destination on the front and side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via the center doors. ● If paying cash, take a ticket as you board. If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the sensor, ticket not required. ● Bus stops and fees are displayed on the monitor next to a driver. The fee appears under the ticket number. ● Fees are displayed on the monitor above the driver. Match your ticket number to get your fee. ● Push the stop button to alert the driver that you want to get off at the next stop. ● Drop the fee and your ticket into the box next to the driver and get off from the front door. If you need change, drop cash into the box next to the driver. When you are using nimoca, wave your card above the sensor. ● 버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠 있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가 오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다 ● 현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에 정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을 때에는 승차 구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이 경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음). ● 정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로 운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권 번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다. ● 목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고 안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다. ● 운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의 운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할 때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지 않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를 갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에 카드를 터치한다.

ravelling provides a chance to try new, often memorable foods in unfamiliar surroundings. Mizoguchi, the owner of Le Breton, is no stranger to such experiences. As a pâtissier working actively in Tokyo and Fukuoka, he decided to visit Europe to discover what a galette really tasted like. A type of crêpe made with buckwheat, galettes originate in Brittany, northern France. They generally contain ham, cheese and egg, but any combination of fillings is possible. After the first bite, Mizoguchi was hooked and he collected local recipes from no less than six towns to bring back home. Le Breton serves 28 varieties of galette and 33 dessert crêpes. Mizoguchi wants his customers to enjoy galettes daily, not just as treats, as the people of Brittany do, so prices are reasonable at ¥600 for one filled with egg and cheese. A lunch set including a galette and a salad is served for ¥750 from 11:00 ~ 15:00. Japanese fillet steak, chicken confit and other à la carte items join the menu for dinner and are all washed down well with a glass of French wine.

s autumn takes hold, a distinct chill is creeping into the air. On the upside, though, this makes for the perfect opportunity to stay cosy and warm inside your favorite café! We visited ELLE CAFÉ on the fourth floor of Hakata Hankyu to try their new autumn/ winter menu offerings with a stylish young Frenchwoman who has enjoyed going to cafés since her teens. Lucile Chalmandrier became interested in human behavioral studies as a high school student and decided to major in sociology at university As she was studying in Bordeaux, she took advantage of the sister-city relationship with Fukuoka and came over to attend Kyushu University, where she is currently furthering her studies with a master’s course.
“Why do people do the things they do? It’s an interesting point to consider,” she says in a soft but enthusiastic tone. Her ambition is to one day teach at a Japanese university. “I want to live in Fukuoka as long as I can. 따스함을ፚ나누다 목을 축여줄 뿐 아니라 몸과 마음을 녹여주는 장소인 카페를 찾고 싶은 계절, 가을. 어렸을 때부터 카페가 생활의 일부였으며 10대 때 처음으로 혼자 카페를 찾기 시작했다는 프랑스 여성과 가을/겨울 메뉴가 새롭게 등장한 하카타 한큐 4층 ELLE CAFÉ를 찾았다. 고등학생 때 사람의 존재와 사고방식에 대해 관심을 가지게 되어 사회학을 전공했다는 루실. 대학진학에 있어서도 그 열정은 계속되었고 현재 후쿠오카시의 자매도시인 보르도와의 연을 좇아 규슈대학대학원 석사과정 사회학 일환으로서 일본의 학교 문제에 대해 연구하고 있다. ‘어째서 사람이 이런 행동을 하는지, 이게 정말 흥미로운 일이죠.’이라며 온화한 어조로, 하지만 진지한 눈빛으로 말하는 그녀의 꿈은 일본의 대학에서 교편을 잡는 것이다. ‘가능하다면 후쿠오카에서 살고 싶어요.

When flags line the entry to the Fukuoka Convention Center in November, you know it’s time to welcome the November Grand Sumo Tournament to town! This year all eyes are on yokozuna Hakuho, who recently achieved his 20th tournament victory, becoming one of only six wrestlers in history to do so. We’ll also be watching Kotoshogiku of Yanagawa City, who has defeated Hakuho in the past, and who will be formally promoted to ozeki rank for the tournament. Competitors come from a wide range of international backgrounds- Mongolia, Bulgaria, Russia, Czech Republic and Japan are just some of the nations represented in the tournament. Works from the Palace Museum in Beijing
Six years in the making, this exhibition provides insight into the ancient dynasty which flourished in East Asia 1,000 years ago. Focused on three women, many of the exhibits including “Mirror Box, Mirror” (10th C, pictured above) were discovered in an ancient burial mound in Inner Mongolia and will be shown for the first time.
Since 2007, this biennial expo event has been directing critical attention towards important worldwide issues. This year’s event, held in Kitakyushu’s Yahatahigashi area, tackles various issues surrounding immigration. Check the website for details and schedule.

A celebration of Yanagawa-born tanka poet and children’s songwriter, Hakushu Kitahara, who passed away on Nov. 2, 1942. Around one hundred boats decorated with lanterns will float down the Yanagawa river at night, and the sky will light up with Autumn fireworks.

This Autumn festival has been held since the late 1500s, and this year around 500,000 people are expected to attend over three days. Lions, dragons and other symbols adorn 14 festival floats. Don’t miss the portable shrine parade on Nov. 3 leaving from Karatsu Shrine.
Jamaican born dub master Jah Shaka, who has been playing since the 60s, comes to Fukuoka this month. He has earnt a worldwide reputation with his own brand of dub, roots and reggae mixed with traditional Jamaican music, and played for 11 hours at this year’s Glastonbury Festival!

◊ trial Bus runs on outer Fukuoka Beltway Trial bus runs begin along the Outer Fukuoka Beltway where several hospitals and medical institutions are located. These are expected to help people visit these medical
facilities. The bus service will be provided from the Ohashi Station on the Nishitetsu Omuta Line to the Fukudai-mae Station on the municipal subway’s Nanakuma Line until the end of October 2012. There will be 26 roundtrips on weekdays, 21 on Saturdays, and 20 on Sundays and holidays.
