We welcome the Class of 2011. As we start our seventh year of medical education in northwest Florida, we are continuously pleased with the students who arrive – 22 this year – and even more so with the faculty that takes the time Dr. Paul McLeod and energy to train them. We have more than 200 faculty members in the area who contribute to the education of the next generation of physicians. Our apprenticeship model would not work without the contributions of our outstanding faculty.

One of our own is returning to us to start her life as a family medicine physician. Kara Brooks (Class of 2006) has completed her residency training and is working in Crestview. Having students return to the Panhandle as physicians is a great outcome for the Pensacola Regional Campus. With six Panhandle students in the Class of 2011, we hope to see a trend of more students returning to this area after residency training. Finally, congratulations to our Class of 2009. They are excellent students and wonderful people, and we wish them all the best as they begin their residency training. We will miss them.

Naval Hospital Pensacola and VA Gulf Coast Health System The Florida State University College of Medicine Pensacola Regional Campus is proud to announce its affiliation with both the Naval Hospital Pensacola and the VA Gulf Coast Health Care System. Students have been training in the Family Medicine residency program at the Naval Hospital and have recently started rotations in surgery there. Plans are under way to add internal medicine at the Naval Hospital to the rotation. Dr. Don Mason with the Family Medicine Residency Program at the Naval Hospital Pensacola stated, “Rotating through outpatient clinics, procedure clinics, and being exposed to family physicians on the wards, emergency

department and labor and delivery students are able to see family medicine in a community hospital setting. The high caliber of students from the FSU College of Medicine has been impressive. The HPSP students and civilian students have all been eager to learn, fun to work with, and have gained a good insight into family medicine today.” This summer students began training at the VA Clinic in psychiatry, family medicine and internal medicine. We are very excited to have two wonderful new partners in educating the physicians of the future.

FSU Mourns the Loss of an Amazing Physician

W. Ian Rogers, M.D.

The Florida State University College of Medicine joins Baptist Hospital, as well as the entire community, in mourning the loss of W. Ian Rogers, M.D.

Dr. Rogers’ plastic surgery elective was highly sought after, and all of the students who had an opportunity to work with him had an immense respect for him as a physician and mentor.

Dr. Rogers, in addition to being a board-certified plastic and microvascular surgeon, was also a clerkship faculty member for our fourth-year medical students.

Dr. Rogers will be deeply missed by the faculty, staff and students of the Florida State University College of Medicine.
