SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd’s Eric Dobratz hit a late 32-yard field goal to give the Rams a 19-16 win over Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon at Rams Stadium in Shepherdstown. FSU had to rally from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game at 16-16. Frank Keenan hit a 25-yard field goal and then later Logan Moore hit Patrick Pinchinat out of the back field for a touchdown to tie the score. FSU had one last attempt after the Dobratz field goal put SU up 19-16, but on the third play of FSU’s possession, Logan Moore’s pass deflected off a diving Matt Wilmer and then into the arms of Shepherd’s Keon Robinson that effectively ended the Falcon rally. In a game featuring two of the league’s best defenses, Fairmont State had slight advantages statistically in rushing yards (125-103), passing yards (151-138) and first downs (16-14). Moore was 11-25 for 151 yards with a pair of interceptions and two touchdowns. Patrick Pinchinat led the Falcons on the ground with 14 carries for 64 yards, and added a pair of catches for 41 yards and a touchdown. Wilmer had a 34-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Defensively for Fairmont State, Dan Dario had 15 total tackles to lead the way for the Falcons. Greg Underwood was solid with six tackles and one interception. Daniel Strosnider recorded two tackles for a loss. For Shepherd, Kevin Clancy was 13-18 for 138 yards and an interception. Tommy Addison got the majority of carries toting the ball 18 times for 44 yards and one touchdown. Nate Hoyte had nine carries for 42 yards and a score. Robert Byrd recorded three catches for 39 yards. Fairmont State started the game strong going 73 yards on seven plays on its second possession, capped by a 34-yard catch and run from Moore to Wilmer. The extra point was blocked, though, meaning FSU had to settle for just a 6-0 lead. The Falcons continued to control the game in the quarter until a deep punt started FSU at its own one. The Falcons got some breathing room, but Moore was sacked on 2nd-and-8, fumbled in the end zone and recovered by FSU in the endzone, giving Shepherd the safety. The Falcons held on to the lead midway through the second quarter, but Moore was picked off by Ben Minturn at the Shepherd five as the Falcons were driving. Shepherd then took the ball 70 yards on 12 plays to grab the 9-6 lead into the locker room. Shephed stretched its lead to 16-6 after a typical Shepherd drive that went 15 plays, 54 yards and eating up nearly eight minutes off the clock. FSU would get it back to within a touchdown after Keenan’s 25-yarder made it 16-9, with still most of the fourth quarter left to play. On Shepherd’s ensuing drive, Clancy made an ill-advised throw that fell into Underwood’s arms at the Shepherd 41. FSU then converted on a pair of fourth downs and eventually Moore found Pinchinat for 13 yards and the game-tying touchdown. The Rams took over with six minutes left and drove the ball 52 yards on 10 plays before the Dobratz field goal with 2:11 left, before the FSU final turnover.

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Glenville State’s Colston Bayless kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to defeat Fairmont State, 17-14, Saturday afternoon at Ike Morris Stadium. Fairmont State held a 14-0 lead at the break but the Pioneers tied the game in the fourth quarter and forced overtime. The Pioneers kicked a field goal in their possession in overtime, and then on third down, FSU’s Logan Moore’s pass was intended for Perry Baker but the ball was knocked into the air and then intercepted into the end zone which ended the game. Glenville State had 440 yards of total offense including 216 on the ground. FSU managed just 257 yards of total offense. GSC owned the ball for nearly 39 minutes of the game. The Pioneers seemingly controlled the first quarter, but FSU’s defense refused to give and kept Glenville State off the board. FSU then put together an impressive drive at the end of the first quarter, capped by a Scott Victorio 2-yard plunge. The score remained the same late in the second quarter, but Glenville State was driving late, but Darold Huges’ pass was intercepted in the end zone by Dewey McDonald, who returned it 31 yards. That led to another Falcon scoring drive, this time taken in by Logan Moore on a quarterback keeper from five yards out as FSU took a 14-0 lead into the break. Fairmont State got the ball to open the third quarter, but lost its first fumble of the season on its second play of the half. That led promptly to a Glenville State touchdown as Wes Hanson hauled in a Huges pass from five yards out to cut the Falcon lead in half. FSU hung on to the lead into the fourth quarter, again thwarting a scoring attempt by Glenville State as Daniel Strosnider picked off a pass inside the 20-yard line. But the Pioneers finally drew even when Kareem Alexander went in from 1-yard out midway through the fourth and made it 14-14. Fairmont State had a chance to take lead on its ensuing possession, but Frank Keenan’s 39-yard attempt just missed to the left. Glenville State was driving to try and take the lead, but Strosnider forced a 21-yard loss on third down that took the Pioneers out of scoring position and punt. Zack Page, who tied the NCAA Division II record for career kick returns, returned the punt all the way back to the GSC 26-yard line, but it was called back on a penalty. The Falcons then were content to take the game into overtime.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- West Liberty (2-2, 1-1) pulled away in the second half to earn a 43-23 road win at Fairmont State (2-3, 0-3). Zach Amedro became the WVIAC’s all-time leading passer with 12,073 career yards after hitting on 26 of 39 throws for 373 yards. Ryan Travis hauled in 13 of those passes for 214 yards and a score. Kevon Calhoun led the way on the ground for the Toppers with 185 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. A 41-yard field goal by Frank Keenan pulled Fairmont State within 17-16 early in the third quarter, but the next four touchdowns belonged to the Toppers as they pushed their lead to 43-16. FSU’s Logan Moore completed 11 of 33 passes for 163 yards and a score. Patrick Pinchinat had 40 yards on 10 rushes for the Falcons. Keenan added field goals of 27 and 34 yards. Keenan finished with three field goals. Zack Page became the NCAA Division II leader for kickoff returns and combined kick/ punt return yarage on the night. He finished with six kick returns 173 yards. Eric Eitson had four catches for 49 yards. Perry Baker caught a late touchdown pass from Vick Bradford. FSU’s top tackler was Greg Underwood with 11 total tackles. Dewey McDonald had six tackles and an interception he returned 86 yards. Bryan Wilson had his first career interception. West Liberty held a 580-250 edge in total offense, including a 201-80 advantage on the ground. The Topper defense limited FSU to 57 second half yards as they moved out from a 17-13 intermission lead.

CHARLESTON W.Va. -- Charleston raced out to a 21-0 lead early into the second quarter and withstood Fairmont State’s rally and held on, 35-27, on Saturday afternoon at University of Charleston Stadium. Freshman Logan Moore was 18-31 for 216 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon. But UC piled up 319 yards on the ground and converted timely third downs passing down the stretch to help preserve the victory. The Golden Eagles were 7-13 on third downs and owned the ball for 37 minutes of the game. UC got the opening kickoff and promptly marched 75 yards on 10 plays to take the 7-0 lead. The Falcons went three-and-out, and Charleston added another score to go ahead 14-0 with 7:31 to play in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter as Roberts scored his second touchdown of the afternoon. The Falcons got things going when Moore connected with Stephan Johnson up the seam from 34 yards for the score. UC added another TD from Roberts with three minutes left in the half, but the Falcons mustered a perfect 2-minute offense that was capped by Moore hitting Eric Eitson in the back of the end zone with just seconds remaining. The extra point attempt was no good, but FSU settled to go into the break down 28-13. FSU got the ball first in the third quarter but couldn’t capitalize, and even received a turnover after UC fumbled the punt, but the Falcons could not get points. The FSU defense got an interception from Ryland Newman on UC’s next possession, and this time was able to punch it in. Patrick Pinchinat did the honors from a yard out to make it 28-20 with seven minutes left in the third quarter. UC got its only points in the half after a fumbled punt for the Falcons. On third and long, Wilson found Julian Johnson over top of the FSU secondary for a 30-yard touchdown. The Falcons responded just over a minute later as Zack Page hauled in a 35-yard touchdown reception to make it 35-27. FSU stopped UC on its next possession, but could move down the field and was forced to punt. UC methodically melted away the game’s final five minutes, executing on a critical third down with a 38-yard catch and run from Wilson to Justin Nelson. Defensively, the Falcons were led by 11 total tackles from Greg Underwood. Garret Davis added nine tackles and Dewey McDonald had seven.
