History of the Certificate The Certificate in Institutional Research was developed in 2002 with a grant from the Association for Institutional Research and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The Certificate is housed in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education at Florida State University. Courses are developed to appeal to a variety of professionals and students who have an interest in advancing their understanding of Institutional Research theory and practice. Under the direction of Dr. Robert Schwartz, the Certificate has evolved from a hybrid onand off-campus format to an online program, accessible to students around the world.

Certificate Requirements

The Certificate in Institutional Research at Florida State University is an online program designed to provide academic and professional development opportunities for institutional researchers, administrators, graduate students, and faculty from all areas of higher education.

The program consists of 18 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in three areas of study:

The Certificate is housed in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education. Courses appeal to a variety of professionals and students who have an interest in advancing their understanding of Institutional Research theory and practice. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and understanding of institutional research, explore institutional, state, and national databases, and apply their knowledge to practical situations.

Admission Procedures And related Requirements Applications are accepted on a continual basis. However, it is recommended that students begin the program in the summer with the Introduction to Institutional Research course. Students must meet the requirements for admission to Florida State University at the graduate level as a nondegree seeking student.

Courses are taught completely online using an asynchronous method of delivery. Courses are generally taught over six weeks in the summer and 15 weeks during the fall and spring semesters.

Students may transfer in up to six credit hours of graduatelevel coursework in research or statistics from an accredited institution pending approval by the program’s director.

Upon completion of the Certificate, students will submit a completed Program of Study form to the program coordinator. A notation of completion of the Certificate in Institutional Research will be placed on the transcript, and students will also receive a paper certificate confirming their completion.
