The afternoon of March 29th marked the beginning of the Feik School of Pharmacy’s season of celebrations of our students’ milestones and pinnacles reached in their academic careers. This will culminate with the graduation of the Class of 2019. For the Rites of Passage Ceremony, the 85 students of the Class of 2020 gathered with families and FSOP administrators, faculty and staff to celebrate their passing from the didactic to the experiential phase of their education. Each student received a fresh new lab coat and Feik School of Pharmacy Class of 2020 pin to mark the occasion. Dr. Jason Cota, Vice Chair and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, returned by popular demand to serve as Master of Ceremonies. Faculty and special guests presented students with recognitions and awards, as well as scholarships for academic performance, community service activities, and involvement in student organizations. Scholarship awards to FSOP students this year totaled $73,820 and were awarded to 45 P1 through P4 students. Congratulations to all of the scholarship and award recipients! Led by Dean Maize, the rising P4 students recited the Pledge of Professionalism together. The Dean was pleased to present three favored annual awards recognizing FSOP faculty and staff performance. The recipient of the Teacher of the Year award, selected by the students, was Dr. Helmut Gottlieb, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The recipient of the Faculty of the Year award, selected by faculty and staff, was Dr. Kimberly Cauthon, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice. Ms. Linda Etter, Secretary to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, was selected by faculty and staff to receive the Staff of the Year Award. The Rites of Passage ceremony closed with a blessing of the students from Sr. Walter Maher, CCVI, UIW Vice President for Mission and Ministry. Sr. Walter Dr. Gottlieb, Dr. Cauthon and Ms. Etter with Dean Maize.

CURRICULUM

The FSOP places targeted emphasis and value on preparing graduates to be culturally-competent pharmacists. Many of our graduates go on to serve the healthcare needs of the citizens of San Antonio and south Texas, an area that reflects a Hispanic majority population demographic. With Hispanic Texans projected to become the largest population group in the state by 2022, the FSOP is equipping graduates by instituting a required Spanish for Pharmacists component in the curriculum. While we have had Spanish for Pharmacists electives available for years, the Class of 2022 will be the first class where all students will be required to complete the coursework. This not only positions graduates to be more successful in a competitive job market, it also prepares them to provide more competent care to an increasingly-diverse patient base. 231 FSOP graduates to date are Hispanic, comprising 32% of all graduates. 35% of the current student body is Hispanic, and 1 in 3 students is bilingual. The FSOP graduated the highest percentage of Hispanic pharmacists in the continental U.S. in 2014, 2015 and 2018. The FSOP commitment to student body diversity dovetails perfectly with the UIW commitment and values as a whole in their historically-held designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).

SUCCESS

The FSOP held its 5th annual and most successful alumni Fiesta dinner party yet, with an attendance of 70+, during the opening week of Fiesta celebrations in San Antonio, Thursday April 25th. The party, complete with a live mariachi band, was held on the patio overlooking the San Antonio River at the downtown Wyndham Garden Riverwalk Hotel. The event has grown in attendance each year and is a great occasion for alumni and their families to reconnect and network with former classmates and FSOP faculty and staff.

D

ean’s Corner:

Dear Alumni, The Feik is poised to graduate the Class of 2019 – our 10th graduating class! With each graduate we send the Word out into the world, equipped to reach for their goals and dreams. They join an impressive rank of pharmacists that call the FSOP home, and we wish them every success – with the NAPLEX and MJPE, and for a relaxing summer. As we prepare for the start of the fall semester, we will be welcoming a full class of P1s at orientation. A curriculum change is coming, starting with the Class of 2022, in that Spanish for Pharmacists will move from an elective taken by a few to a required part of the curriculum to be taken by all students. This not only will position graduates to be more successful in a competitive job market, it also will prepare them to provide more competent care to an increasingly-diverse patient base. We had a wonderful alumni Fiesta kick-off party on April 25th, held on an expansive outdoor patio overlooking the river. It was a great time of renewing acquaintances with alumni and faculty and families. The company, the food and the mariachis were great! If you missed us this year, I hope you’ll consider coming to our next one. Best wishes to you and yours for an enjoyable summer. Praise be the Incarnate Word! David F. Maize, Dean and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Education, Truth, Faith, Service, Innovation

NOTES FROM THE ALUMNI NETWORK CHAIR Fellow Alumni, The 10th class from UIW-FSOP has now graduated from the Feik School of Pharmacy. Congratulations Class of 2019 and to those alumni that have completed PGY1 and PGY2 residencies. The ceremonies were both exciting and emotional with Dr. Tiffany Karnes reminiscing about the past four years of pharmacy school with her graduating class. This year the pinning and alumni induction ceremony was held in the Sky Room. I was honored to induct the graduates into the UIWFSOP Alumni Network. The alumni network “Fiesta Celebration” event was a huge success again this year. Thank you to Dean Maize for coordinating the event once again. We had a large group of graduating P4’s attend. We also were pleased with faculty and other UIW alumni coming out to celebrate with us. Again, the mariachis were entertaining, and the food was delicious. What an amazing annual event to kick off FIESTA! We are excited at UIW-FSOP to begin a student chapter in the fall for the National Hispanic Pharmacists Association (NHPA). I am blessed to serve as an inaugural board member. We are on pace to be the FIRST student chapter of NHPA. This is very fitting for us since we graduate the highest percentage of Hispanic pharmacists in the continental United States. More information to come.

Good luck to the class of 2019 with your NAPLEX and MPJE exams. I know you will make the Alumni Network proud. Enjoy the summer with your family. You certainly deserve it. We have an alumni night planned at the annual TPA meeting in Irving, TX. We will be at the Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas at 7:30 on August 2nd. Our annual “Meet the Alumni BBQ” event will be on August 14 beginning at 4PM for our incoming P1 class. Call a friend, or better yet, pick up a classmate and come out to reconnect with your alumni network. I look forward to hearing from you and entertaining any new ideas you may have for the alumni network. God bless. Chris Alvarado Pharm.D., R.Ph. UIW Alumni Network Chair uiwrph@gmail.com

The UIW students who started their own chocolate company – Sinzuca Chocolates – were among 56 other teams from around the world to pitch their ideas in the Richards Barrentine Values and Ventures Competition at TCU. The competition, which was held April 5-6 in Fort Worth, invites students to present ideas for conscious capitalism ventures that make a profit while also solving a problem. Entrepreneurs, investors and bankers served as judges. Sinzuca Chocolates is a health-conscious startup that specializes in organic dark chocolate products infused with superfoods like goji berries, quinoa and flax seed. Their products are gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan-friendly. The Sinzuca Chocolates team that competed at TCU was comprised of sophomore pharmacy student Yolanda Martinez and senior biology majors Noah Silvas and Matthew Silvas. The first round of the Values and Venture Competition consisted of a 12-minute pitch, followed by a 10-minute question and answer session with the judges. While the team was not selected to advance to the second round, Sinzuca was invited to participate in an Elevator Pitch Competition, where they placed fourth out of 46 other teams. They earned an Honorable Mention award and a $250 prize for their efforts. P2 student Yolanda Martinez pictured center.

“The most valuable asset we took away from the competition was the opportunity to learn. In addition, we were able to network with key individuals throughout the weekend,” the team said. “The Sinzuca Chocolates team had a priceless experience and hopes to bring back what we have learned to the University of the Incarnate Word.” Excerpt from H-E-B School of Business and Administration News 2019

The Pre-Pharmacy Association, led by PPA officers Carlos Colunga (Treasurer) and Jose Luna II (APhA Liaison), served as the UIW host student organization for the 2019 College Health Scholars Program held at UIW on Saturday, April 6th. Eager to serve and promote pre-health professions, the officers had no trouble recruiting PPA members to volunteer in putting the conference on, and in advertising throughout the campus for two weeks leading up to the event. This was one of three nationwide conferences sponsored by the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). Pre-Pharmacy Association members volunteering also listened to guest speakers and panelists and participated in mock interviews and personal statement preparation. PPA members comprised approximately one third of the conference audience. As they continue preparing for application and acceptance into the Feik School of Pharmacy, PPA officers and members seek growth and learning opportunities. The faculty advisors for this robust and successful student organization are FSOP personnel Mrs. Candace M. Gonzalez, Pre-Pharmacy Counselor/Advisor, and Dr. Anita Bryant, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Co-Curricular Coordinator.
