Dear FSOP Alumni, When I visit retailers, I often amuse myself by making mental notes of what I would like for them to know about their establishment and the service. Sometimes it is little things. For example, the checker and bagger should not air their work-related issues where the customer can hear. The incident that prompted me to address this occurred in a Buc-ee’s. I am a fan! I approached them sometime back about the lack of freshness dating on their products. The response from the clerk was that the ‘rapid turnover did not allow anything to stay around long.’ Last week, I purchased a jar of Cherry Butter. In great anticipation of a wonderful addition to my hot biscuit, I opened it to discover mold growing inside the lid and on top of the product. I decided to give feedback, but a recorded phone message said to provide comments and questions via e-mail. Dear Feik School of Pharmacy Alumni, Happy New Year and I hope 2013 has been great to everyone. The FSOP class of 2013 is preparing to cross the stage in less than 3 months, and soon our alumni will include almost 400 members. Our UIW alumni have expanded to include many different areas in the medical field, including the first graduating class of the UIW School of Optometry this Spring. I’d like to announce a few events this spring where we welcome your participation. The first alumni event this year will be the 2nd Annual Alumni and Graduating Class BBQ held at the FSOP campus on the last day of seminar. The date has yet to be determined, but will be released soon. For those interested in pharmacy politics, the Texas Pharmacy Association has organized a Spring Leadership Conference in Austin on April 11-13. This event encompasses the every other year event “Day on the Hill,” to discuss issues with your elected State Representatives and State Senators. In May, the Bexar County Pharmacy Association and Central Texas System of Health Care Pharmacists will host a joint meeting at FSOP for members of either organization. Lastly, the Texas Pharmacy Association’s Annual Convention will be held July 24-28 in Frisco, Texas. I’d also like to announce some exciting news for UIW, which includes Division I sports on the horizon and many changes on the way for the University of the Incarnate Word. On another note, I have many happy events to share amongst our alumni network. From the class of 2010, Dr. Ricardo Medina married his wife Elizabeth in October 2012. Dr. Barbara Lobo and her husband, Ramiro, are expecting their first daughter in early March. Dr. Jackie McDougal and her husband Brad are expecting their first son at the beginning of June. From the class of 2012, Dr. Audrey Valencia and her fiancé, Daniel Martinez, will be united in matrimony in June 2013. From the class of 2011, Marla Lear and husband Jeremy are expecting a son in early April. Congratulations to all and we hope to hear more news about marriages, new arrivals, promotions, new jobs or anything you would like to share with your alumni. Time has flown by, and my term as a director on the board for the UIW Alumni Association expires in May. I have really enjoyed being a member of this group, which is still in its early stages. Dear fellow Alumni, I hope this letter finds you and your families doing well. Congratulations on your current pharmacy positions! It is wonderful to think about each of you fulfilling the mission of the University of the Incarnate Word by serving your community in the role of pharmacist. I am the new Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) coordinator at the pharmacy school, a position that has been both rewarding and challenging. I could not have done it without your support and I am extremely thankful for all the alumni who are currently helping us as preceptors.
Each coming alumni newsletter I would like to share some happenings in Experiential, and feature an alumni who is serving as a preceptor. In this issue I would like to highlight Dr. Nicole Bryson, who serves as a preceptor for us at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) here in San Antonio. Dr. Bryson is a staff pharmacist for SAMMC, and is a valuable member of the pharmacy team where she works with fellow alumni Dr. Narvalyn Ornelas and Dr. Della Agquiz. Dr. Bryson graduated with the inaugural class in 2010, and was selected from amongst her peers to speak on behalf of the class at the very first Oath and Hooding ceremony. Besides her fantastic oratory abilities, Nicole has earned praise and recognition from the pharmacy student she has had on rotation, and is considered to be a well prepared, encouraging and enthusiastic preceptor. Congratulations Nicole on all your hard work and accomplishments! I am always looking for past alumni to help serve as preceptors. FSOP F ORGING G L OBAL P ARTNERSHIPS : In keeping with the mission, values, directives and actions of the University, the Feik School of Pharmacy is taking advantage of opportunities to create partnerships with pharmacy educators, schools and pharmaceutical operations in locales outside of North America. As the University launches its latest venture with a UIW European Study Center in Heidelberg, Germany, the FSOP is looking to Spain, Lebanon, and South America. Universidad de Navarra While attending a scientific meeting in San Antonio, Dr. Helen Smith met a colleague who had a connection with the Universidad de Navarra in Spain, and knew of their interest in partnering with a U.S. school of pharmacy. The Universidad de Navarra is considered by some to be the top university in Spain. They have an excellent medical component that includes pharmacy, nursing and medicine, and boasts extensive research agendas and facilities. Drs. Smith and Johnson-Fannin traveled to the Universidad de Navarra to meet with school officials in November. An exchange agreement was formed and is now in place, and FSOP will receive the first 2 students from Spain in the fall of 2013. Their students will participate in our didactic courses. Dr. Smith has been invited to present some lectures there, and FSOP students will be eligible to do elective APPE rotations. This sister school agreement opens exchange opportunities to UIW undergraduate students as well.

Lebanese American University UIW and FSOP established a partnership last January with the School of Pharmacy at Lebanese American University (LAU) to provide clinical rotations in the U.S. for their students. This is a requirement of their degree program and rotation credits transfer back to LAU, which is the only international school of pharmacy to hold ACPE accreditation. UIW serves as the sponsoring university for these pharmacy students, to enable them to obtain student visas to complete their rotations at the Methodist Hospital System in Houston. UIW has a reciprocal sister school agreement in place with LAU, which provides both faculty and student exchange opportunities university-wide, not just with the FSOP. To date UIW has received 30 LAU students for completion of their clinical rotations. The opportunity to send students to Lebanon for elective clinical rotations is available. Safety considerations create the current reluctance to engage. Brazil Through contacts made by Dr. Marcos Oliveira, the FSOP is exploring exchange agreements with Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Paraná and Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas. Additionally, conversations are developing between a Brazilian pharmaceutical manufacturing entity to create a platform for information exchange relative to FDA and ANVISA regulations. The FSOP entertained a delegation from Brazil in December and plan a trip to Brazil this spring.

Prom ot i ng Cul t ural Underst andi ng and Interdi sci pl i nary Educati on A group of 20 interdisciplinary students (14 pharmacy, 4 nursing, 2 undergraduate) and four faculty members from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Feik School of Pharmacy and Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions have started the semester-long journey with an elective course that will culminate in a nearly two week trip to India in May 2013. The course elective for this study abroad opportunity provides students an opportunity to work with students from different disciplines and gain an understanding and appreciation for the Indian culture.
We will be using blended learning techniques to cover current and historical events in India, and students will be giving presentations on a variety of topics to prepare the class for the trip. Our time in India will be a special opportunity to visit historical and religious sites, and healthcare-related facilities in an effort to provide a first-hand demonstration of cultural differences and similarities, the roles of healthcare professionals in different countries, and the value of interdisciplinary education. Pharmacy faculty on the trip will be Dr. Rebecca Attridge, Dr. Russell Attridge, and Dr. David Maize.
ASHP MIDYEAR CLINICAL MEETING FSOP sent a robust contingent of 53 second, third and fourth year SSHP students to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas, NV December 2-6. They were accompanied by Dr. Cheryl Horlen, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Dr. Kathleen Lusk, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, and Dr. Blair Sarbacker, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice. Our third and fourth-year students received funding from the Dean. Two fourth year students, Mr. Daniel Akers and Mr. David Wilson, received $500 each for placing first in the fall ASHP Clinical Skills Competition at FSOP. Dr. Tiffany-Jade Kreys, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice, worked with the P4 students to prepare them for the competition. FSOP was pleased to be able to give so many of our students the opportunity to attend such a highly educational and career-enhancing event. FSOP sent the largest contingent of students to date to this Midyear Clinical, and it was a valuable experience for all.

FIRST FSOP FACULTY SABBATICAL AWARDED Dr. Patricia E. Lieveld, Professor of Pharmacy Practice, was awarded a sabbatical leave for the 2014 Spring semester. She will continue her research on methods to improve access to safe water in Bukoba, Tanzania. Dr. Lieveld will return to the work she started in the remote village of Kishanje, and extend the project to two other isolated villages, Kabale and Ithawa. She will conduct workshops on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), in addition to the proper care and maintenance of rainwater harvesting tanks. FSOP E MPLOYEE W INS N ATIONAL A WARD Ms. Alejandra Zertuche, Assessment Coordinator for the Feik School of Pharmacy, was honored to receive two nominations this fall for the ExamSoft Champion awards. ExamSoft is the online electronic exam delivery and assessment program used by FSOP for exam administration across the curriculum. The school began using ExamSoft in June 2012. Ms. Zertuche was hired as a full-time employee then as well, although she first began working for FSOP at a part-time student employee, as Statistics Data Operator, in October 2010. She was nominated by her supervisor, Dr. David Maize, for the Helping Others Award, for a program that goes above and beyond to spread best practices to help their peers succeed. Ms. Zertuche was one of three award recipients out of a field of 18 nominees. Her second nomination came from ExamSoft staff for an award for which only they could submit nominations, the Thanks Award. This award was to an individual that has no hesitation to call ExamSoft and speak their mind, and that repeatedly helped the ExamSoft Team learn, improve, and better themselves. Ms. Zertuche was one of only three nominees in this category. AP H A V OLUNTEERS AT D IABETES W ALK On Saturday, November the 3rd, APhA-ASP took part in the American Diabetes Association 2012 Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event. This event was held at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas and hosted thousands of walkers advocating for diabetes awareness. Chapter members provided education on diabetes care and prevention. They also screened dozens of participants in blood pressure and blood glucose. CPFI: SENDING C H R I S T M A S AN OCEAN AWAY This fall, the FSOP chapter of the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International (CPFI) continued a very rewarding annual tradition. CPFI collaborated with Samaritan’s Purse to organize and execute a gift drive for Operation Christmas Child. Donations of small toys, clothing items and toiletries were collected, packed into shoeboxes, wrapped, and sent to children in need in third world countries. This year, CPFI members assembled 171 gift boxes that were sent to children in the Philippines.
K A P P A E P S I L O N “S E R V E S ” This past November, Kappa Epsilon brothers took part in the preparation of meals for the residents of Haven for Hope. Haven for Hope is the city’s multi-service campus for homeless individuals and families, providing shelter, food, physical and spiritual care, as well as training and skills. The end goal is to enable their residents to become self-sufficient and re-transition into the community. The brothers of Kappa Epsilon were involved in the preparation of a meal, washing dishes, and cleaning the cafeteria. The experience was, in one word, amazing. It gave the brothers the opportunity to not only interact with the staff of Haven for Hope but also with the residents outside a healthcare setting, and help in any way possible the people that are the most needy in our community.
KAPPA PSI HEALTH FAIRS Brothers from the Beta Epsilon chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity participated in their first health fair of the semester at the YMCA TriPoint Center for Life on Saturday, January 26th. Eight students served in two shifts, along with two preceptors, Dr. Cynthia Nguyen and Dr. Joseph Tran. 60 patients were seen and offered wellness counseling and literature on BMI and blood pressure. Kappa Psi also held a health fair on Saturday, February 9th at Gold’s Gym on Austin Highway in San Antonio. Preceptors attending the event were Dr. Vanessa Phillips and Dr. Elizabeth Urteaga. Eight brothers, Kristen Tharp, Robyn Beatty, Lissete Arias, Justin Hrncir, Chris Freeman, Rudy Yanez, Nate Oyefaso and Lima Abraham, monitored blood pressure, tested cholesterol and glucose and BMI. 75 patients were seen.
PHI DELTA CHI DELIVERS CHRISTMAS The Elf Louise Christmas Project is a local non-profit organization that provides gifts to the children of underserved families. The PDC Gamma Nu Chapter members collected, wrapped and delivered toys to needy children selected by Elf Louise. For the Santa Delivery, Gamma Nu had two teams. Within these teams, one Brother was dressed as Santa, while other Brothers were “Santa’s Helpers.” The Brothers were we able to reach out to those children on their delivery list, and everyone associated with their families.

PHI LAMBDA SIGMA PROMOTES ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS In the months of November and December 2012, Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society (PLS) members volunteered at a health fair at the San Antonio 5K Santa Fun Run. In collaboration with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA), the students of PLS presented information and raised awareness for organ donation to members of the San Antonio community. The goal was not only to provide education regarding organ donation, but also to register potential new donors. For the attendees that were uncertain about registering to be a donor, cookies in the shape of a heart or kidney were offered, in exchange for a monetary donation to TOSA. In the course of presenting the organ donation board during these months, the members of PLS educated approximately 60 members of the community, raised $56 for TOSA, and recruited 11 new donors!
RHO CHI ASSISTS AT ORGAN DONOR CEREMONY On October 28, 2012, members from the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society Delta Eta Chapter volunteered their time to assist with the Lights of Life Ceremony held by the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance. This annual event is a celebration of lives transformed by organ donations. Families of donors and recipients gathered to give thanks for incredible gifts given by selfless individuals. Memory quilts dedicated to donors were also on display at the Oak Hills Country Club event. Rho Chi members helped set up quilts, register donor and recipient families, and with event breakdown. This event truly touched the lives of the members that attended to hear the stories and memories of loved ones who got a new chance at life and others who saved lives.
SNPHA PROVIDES MARATHON SUPPORT On November 11, 2012 the students of SNPhA participated in the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon alongside other health professionals. Students helped set up the medical tent in the morning and take it down at the end of the event. They also passed out ice as well as helped doctors triage runners having difficulties at the finish line.
SNPHA RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT HEART HEALTH According to the American Heart Association, approximately 500,000 women die each year from heart disease. That is why SNPhA's Power to End Stroke Committee wanted to raise awareness about heart disease being the number 1 killer of women by asking students to GO RED FOR WOMEN! on Wednesday, February 13, 2013.
FSOP’S GOT TALENT! On February 22, 2013 to a packed house, our talented Feik School of Pharmacy students stepped up to the plate to show off their abilities in our inaugural “FSOP’s Got Talent” competition. A collection of eight performances were prepared – ranging from singing, dancing, acting, and even pre-recorded short films – for this intense friendly rivalry. The winners for this talent show were: 1st place: Elizabeth Everett (P1 – Class of 2016), 2nd place: Desi Villarreal (P2 – Class of 2017), and 3rd place: Danielle Johns (P1 – Class of 2016). The winners of the “FSOP Dance-Off” were the P1s – Class of 2016.
Let’s not forget the emcees of the night, the “Triple Threat” – the three Student Affairs counselor/advisors, who engaged the audience and the performers throughout the evening. The “Triple Threat” also performed a parody of the Saturday Night Live Bruno Mars Pandora skit. The OSA advisors called their skit “El Pandoro.”

NEW BEGINNINGS! Congratulations to Dr. Felix Nguyen (FSOP Class of 2011), who has been chosen as a candidate of a leadership program with the intent to be groomed for future leadership with the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C. He was one of only 27 program candidates selected from across the U.S. Brandi Fewell Drzymala and her husband Wesley delivered their first child, Wyatt Ashton, on Thursday, January 24, 2013. He weighed 7lbs 15oz and was 20 inches long. They are so excited to have been blessed with such a handsome, healthy and happy little boy.

FACULTY MEMBER BEGINS NEW CHAPTER Dr. John Tovar, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, left FSOP in late January. He has returned to his home country of Peru to assist in his family’s business. Dr. Tovar joined the FSOP faculty in 2007. He also held the position of Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Tovar’s areas of research interest include infectious diseases and cardiovascular disease. We thank Dr. Tovar for his many contributions during his tenure at UIW. His friends and colleagues at FSOP wished him well at a farewell reception on January 17th. He will be missed.
