“It’s a safe thing to trust Him to fulfill the desires which He creates.” -Amy Carmichael “The Christian faith is meant to be lived moment by moment. It isn't some broad, general outline-it's a long walk with a real Person. Details count: passing thoughts, small sacrifices, a few encouraging words, little acts of kindness, brief victories over nagging sins.” -Joni Eareckson Tada

“Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do.” -Shaquille O’Neal “One act of thanksgiving, when things go wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclinations.” -Saint John of Avila

Photography tip #9 Take pictures in the shade The evenness of the light on your subject’s face when you’re taking portraits is very important! In professional photographs the lighting on faces is nearly always perfectly even. To avoid harsh highlights and shadows, take lots of your outdoor pictures in the open shade. I learned this lesson the hard way. :) Here are a couple examples to show you the difference between pictures taken in bright sunlight and pictures taken in the shade. The lighting on her face is even because she’s in the shade. Bright sunlight made shadows on her face and neck.

The Pearls

Author Unknown

A cheerful girl with bouncy golden curls was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw them: a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box. "Oh please, Mommy. Can I have them? Please, Mommy, please!" Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face. "A dollar ninety-five. That's almost $2.00. If you really want them, I'll think of some extra chores for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy them for yourself. Your birthday's only a week away and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma." As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17 pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went to the neighbor and asked if she could pick dandelions for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at last she had enough money to buy the necklace. Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere--Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time she took them off was when she went swimming or had a bubble bath. Mother said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green. Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, "Do you love me?" "Oh yes, Daddy. You know that I love you." "Then give me your pearls." "Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess-- the white horse from my collection. The one with the pink tail. Remember, Daddy? The one you gave me. She's my favorite." "That's okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night." And he brushed her cheek with a kiss.

About a week later, after the story time, Jenny's daddy asked again, "Do you love me?" " Daddy, you know I love you." "Then give me your pearls." "Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll. The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is so beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her sleeper." "That's okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you." And as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss. A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed with her legs crossed Indian-style. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek. "What is it, Jenny? What's the matter?" Jenny didn't say anything but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And, when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, "Here, Daddy. It's for you." With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny's kind daddy reached out with one hand to take the dime-store necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of beautiful genuine pearls. He had had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her genuine treasure. What “dime-store junk are you holding onto that Jesus wants you to give up? He is waiting to give you priceless treasure!

It's (Not That) Complicated: HOW TO RELATE TO GUYS IN A HEALTHY, SANE, AND BIBLICAL WAY, is a fun look at girl/guy relationships...that can be....lets face it: Complicated!!! Written by Anna Sophia and Elizabeth Botkin, they dig down deep into what makes those relationships so complicated: sin! But do guy/girl relationships have to be complicated? Can you be a friend with a guy, just friends, and not look like your throwing yourself at his feet? How does a girl handle a crush when she knows the timing isn't right? How friendly is too friendly? What do you do when a guy is being WAY to friendly? How in the world does a girl that's seeking after God maneuver her way through the relationship minefield with out getting crushed? The Botkin sisters deal practically and biblically with things such as: online interaction, Hollywood expectations, undefined relationships, and unrequited love. This is hands down the best book about guy/ girl relationships I have ever read! This is definitely a must for a teenage girls library!!! Written by Randy Alcorn, 90 Days of God’s Goodness is an encouraging, inspirational book. It is filled with short chapters - each one revealing different aspects of God’s tremendous goodness and love. If you’re facing difficult circumstances or you simply want to learn more about God and His goodness, this book is a great choice. Each chapter begins with several verses that fit with the theme of the chapter. Since the chapters are so small, it’s the kind of book that you grab and read a few pages when the mood strikes you. :) This book covers issues such as “why does a good God let bad things happen?” and “what’s good about trials?” Mr. Alcorn is a very wise, experienced writer, and he has done a lot of study on the goodness of God. He has a very gentle, uplifting style of writing. Although I’ve chosen to read through it, I think this would be a great book to read during your daily devotions. I highly recommend it!

FROMA word THEfromEDITORS Sarah and Jalisa In October of 2009 we sent out our first “newsletter”. Two years and fourteen issues later, we have decided to bring an end to For Such a Time as This, due to the fact that we now have jobs and various other responsibilities. We’ve really enjoyed compiling and designing the newsletters, and we’ve learned a lot of valuable things through the experience. Thank you so much for all your helpful insight, suggestions, and participation. You’ve been a great group of readers! Please feel free to continue e-mailing us and keeping in touch. You can also visit Jalisa’s blog at www.mylittlebitofthisandthat.wordpress.com. She is going to work at posting all our newsletters from each year on her blog. We also want to explain why The Unlovable wasn’t in this issue. The reason is simply that we told Rebecca we were going to be ending For Such a Time as This, and since she was writing the story specifically for us, she decided to discontinue it. She is hoping to publish something in the future though, and if that happens, we will do what we can to let you know! Thanks again for all your encouragement and interest!! Sarah and Jalisa
