motivation or understanding of needs, but also a result of the interaction between individuals and institutional practices. To counteract the Matthew Effect and realize the ambition of equal opportunity access to quality exchange programmes, it is necessary to investigate the ways in which different institutions practice this educational option. Rather than asking only why some specific students or groups of students are motivated to participate in exchange studies and see the value in international experiences, we need to ask how such motivation and value can be created and maintained as a result of particular institutional practices.
