November Although 2020 has been a year like no other, there is still so much we have to be thankful for. Sometimes it may be difficult in the midst of a mess like COVID to find something to be thankful for, but then we realize that we don’t have to look very far to see our loved ones, the roof over our head, the food on our table and all of the other things that God has blessed us with. I can’t stop looking at this month’s cover. Isn’t it stunning? The vivid colors in the cornucopia are breathtaking! The provisions in it make me think about what the first Thanksgiving must’ve been like. This month’s Neighbors are some very gifted artists. Upon moving here, Veronica Prida fully embraced the traditions and culture in San Antonio and found herself in a very unique position and now she’s hooked. Her husband, Omar Rodriguez started out in the healthcare field, but his artistic passion took over. The two of them have embraced their extra time during the pandemic and have used it to create more beautiful pieces of art. Have you heard about the new fitness/wellness studio in the neighborhood? Berit Mason was born in Greenwich Village, New York, the daughter of a Random House author. Her mother was an artist from Norway. She grew up abroad, before her family settled in San Antonio, where she attended St. Mary’s Hall, and Alamo Heights schools. She attended Mary Baldwin College, graduating from Austin College, in Sherman, Texas, with a B.A. in Political Science. She interned at CNN Washington, covering the US Supreme Court, and was a TV anchor and reporter in Waco, and in San Angelo. Berit was a radio reporter for Texas Public Radio and WOAI 1200 AM, and she was a select RIAS Berlin Commission German American Exchange Journalist. Berit is a freelance journalist, working for NPR, has written for the San Antonio Business Journal, “SA Scene”, now writing for “78209” and “SA Woman”.
Al Rendon photographs the homes seen in 78209 Magazine. “A room is four walls until someone moves in the first object. People choose their environment and the decor in a room to express their personality. The room expresses the family’s taste, and the unique homes of 78209 are very tastefully detailed. My photographs use light to bring a home’s personality to life. When I raise the camera and focus on a room’s view, I am composing to express its owners’ personality in the best light.” He has had more than a dozen major solo exhibits, and his work is in such permanent collections as the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago.

San Antonio Zoo Included in American Humane’s Conservation Documentary “Escape From Extinction.” BY RON AARON EISENBERG
The zoo explained in a prepared statement: Its included in American Humane’s inaugural feature-length documentary, “Escape From Extinction,” opening in cities nationwide through Concert Films, LLC. The film, narrated by Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren, showcases the critical efforts certified and accredited zoos and aquariums are undertaking to preserve millions of species threatened with mass extinction. “We are excited to share ‘Escape From Extinction’ with theatrical audiences across the country,” said Executive Producer Dr. Robin Ganzert, Ph.D., President, and CEO of American Humane. “We hope this incredible film will inspire them to take action to protect and preserve critical species on the brink of disappearing forever.” Since the year 1500, more than 680 species have gone extinct, and today, one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction. “Escape From Extinction” documents the work of the major zoological organizations that truly are nature’s last arks of hope in preserving the rich legacy of life on our planet. New Shake Shop on Broadway Partners with Herbalife Several people contacted me about the new Shake Shop at 5308 Broadway St. It turns out it is the second location for Alamo Heights Nutrition (AHN) and Herbalife. Melissa Maldonado told me, “Our sister location is in Castle Hills, Castle Hills Nutrition. The company offers a variety of self-described nutritious shakes in a multitude of flavors. It’s located at 5308 Broadway. Herbalife is a self-described diet/shake company. It has been criticized over the years as a network marketing scheme. But customers rave about the shakes on the Alamo Heights Nutrition Facebook page.
Weissman Adds New Mr. Juicy
That abandoned Jack in the Box, at 3315 San Pedro at McCullough is alive once more, this time as a Mr. Juicy. Acclaimed San Antonio restauranteur Andrew Weissman conceived the enormously successful hamburger restaurant. The first Mr. Juicy at 3910 McCullough was an instant success. The new location is just a half-mile away from the original site. Weissman told local media he’d see whether the new store drains business from Mr. Juicy’s on McCullough. If it does, he’ll consider closing the original site as a restaurant and using it as a production facility as he adds more locations throughout San Antonio.

In the Loop French Comfort Food Coming to The Pearl A new restaurant, Mon Chou Chou, opening in November, will feature quintessential French comfort food that showcases simple, earthy, flavorful dishes from regions throughout France. As opposed to upscale French restaurants, brasseries are more informal, serving full dinner options but also allowing for a more casual atmosphere of just wine, oysters, cheese plates, and more. “Mon Chou Chou” is a French term of endearment that roughly translates to “sweetie” or “darling.” True to its name, the Brasserie will exemplify a laid back and comfortable atmosphere that serves as a welcome environment for guests at the Pearl. The new restaurant will offer a selection of French classics but will place emphasis on simple dishes that will appeal to everyone. The menu will feature French classics such as Steak Frites, Lyonnaise Salad, Escargot, Fresh Oysters, Domestic & Imported Cheese Plateau, Raclette & Baguette, Braised Texas Rabbit in Dijon Mustard Sauce with Tagliatelle pasta, Coq Au Vin, and much

Brasserie Mon Chou Chou will be led by French-born Executive Chef Laurent Réa, who formerly served as the Executive Chef at Andrew Weismann’s Signature. Mon Chou Chou is located near the entrance to Hotel Emma in the 4,600 sq. ft. space formerly occupied by The Culinary Institute of America’s NAO. An official opening date will be announced at a later time. Chef Réa started his career in culinary school in Strasbourg, France. With positions in worldclass restaurants such as The Lygon Arm Hotel in Broadway, England, and Ca’Savio in Venice, Italy, Réa had an opportunity to join Paul Bocuse and Roger Vergé’s restaurant Chef de France, in Orlando, FL. Chef Réa then moved to San Antonio and worked at several restaurants before joining Southerleigh Hospitality Group as the Executive Chef of Brasserie Mon Chou Chou.

eronica Prida was young, full of ambition and dreams when she arrived at University of Incarnate Word from Mexico City in 1981. An artist with an eye for design, she majored in fashion design and went on to open retail shops.
In 1997, a friend who lived at the same condominium complex set her up on a blind date with Omar Rodriguez, a health care executive who was also an artist. They married in 1998, and throughout the next two decades, the couple would share in their love of creativity, opening studios, and working with a collective of other artists. Prida, who specializes in custom, couture bridal wear, and accessories, found herself thrown into San Antonio traditions and culture when a friend asked her to create her daughter’s coronation dress. “I agreed to make one; then, I got completely hooked,” she said. “They’re all high fashion handwork which I love. It was such a great progression of the work I was already doing, and the girls wearing these dresses are my friends’ daughters and neighbors, and it’s wonderful to be a part of this beautiful tradition.” Specializing in custom bridal accessories has been Prida’s main business in recent years, creating unique veils and more inspired by nature. But when the pandemic began in March, she found herself with a huge purpose and desire to help others struggling. “When it all started, I was watching the news, and I saw that this young designer in New York City was making masks because they were in such need,” she said. “I thought, ‘I can do this for San Antonio. I have the studio, the infrastructure, and manpower to do this. It gave me to help my community.” At first, the masks were being donated to hospitals and others in need. Then Prida began selling them, and each one that was

The shutdown has given both Veronica and Omar a chance to work on the art they’ve always been too busy to explore. While Veronica works on her custom bridal accessories in Olmos Terrace at her studio, Da’Viro, Omar also has a studio in the same location where he works on large abstract pieces. His inspiration comes in a more mathematical format, with beautiful geometric patterns. Many pieces are currently on display at the University of Texas at San Antonio. “Seven months of no travel for work has been interesting,” Rodriguez said. “It’s given us a chance to recalibrate ourselves.” The couple’s son, Jacob, was raised in San Antonio but now lives in North Carolina, working as a musician with Grammy Award Winning Artist Michael Buble. When they’re not busy with their businesses and creating beauty, they enjoy bike riding the mission trails and spending time at their ranch just outside Mexico City. “We’re very close to one of the largest Monarch migrations,” Omar said. “It’s just beautiful there.” Being in quarantine has meant filling every space they have with new pieces of art, and they’re anxiously waiting for the day when they’re able to share with others again. 78209magazine.com | NOVEMBER 2020 21

Watering (using automatic or manual irrigation systems) is permitted only once a week before 10:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. The last number of your address determines what day you can water. You may use drip irrigation, soaker hose, or hand-held hose during any day at any time. 1. Wasting water is prohibited at all times. Do not allow water to run off into the street, drain, or ditch. Repair all leaks. 2. Do not use water to wash an impervious outdoor ground covering such as a parking lot, driveway, street, or sidewalk, unless for health or safety reasons. 3. Restaurants and other eating establishments are prohibited from serving water to customers except upon request of the customer. 4. At least 25% of all non-public swimming pools’ surface

area must be covered with evaporation screens when not being utilized. Inflatable pool toys or floating devices may be used. 5. Washing of vehicles or other equipment at a residence is only allowed during their designated watering day. Water is not allowed to run into the street. 6. Charity car washes are prohibited except at commercial car wash that recycles at least 75% of the water it uses or is certified as a conservation car wash. 7. Ornamental outdoor fountains are not to be utilized unless the water is recycled, and the only additional water used is to compensate for the loss due to evaporation. The Good Things That Have Come From COVID-19 When I read Berit Mason’s October column in 78209 Magazine about how COVID-19 has dramatically increased business for local veterinarians, I wondered who else might be benefiting from the pandemic. The answer is many local businesses are seeing a dramatic increase in sales and related work. Here are just a few: Residential Swimming Pools Designers at the three top local pool sales firms told me their business is booming. “People who may have been thinking about how nice it would be to have an in-ground swimming pool at their homes are now pulling the trigger and building new pools. IT Help Joe Trevino, Information Technology Support expert, said he’s experiencing an increase of approximately 35% in business due to customers needing to work from home. Many are seeking help installing telework systems for online education, telehealth, and more. Some are upgrading home Wi-Fi systems. More are purchasing laptops for home use. Trevino said he is busy setting up smartphones for zoom
conference calls. “And we are installing a growing number of home security systems including external and internal cameras and monitoring equipment.” Home Remodel James Ivy from Ivy Enterprise told 78209 Magazine, “We’ve never been as busy as we are now with home remodeling projects, especially additions to and expansions of home offices. The day I went to mail my absentee ballot, I discovered what I assumed was part of the national conspiracy story over missing postal drop boxes. I’ve been a regular at the Post Office Branch at 9211 Broadway. They had – emphasis on had – a large outdoor drop box that was easy the drive-by to mail whatever. But the day I went there to mail my absentee ballot for the presidential election, the mailbox was gone. Fresh cement covered the ground where it used to live. I assumed we were facing the alleged assault on easy access to mailing absentee ballots. I’d been curious about why the new Alamo Heights Post Office on Austin Highway had no outdoor, drive-by dropbox. Part of the same assault on rights to have easy access to mail important stuff? I contacted the postal service’s public information officer. And she got me the answer to my questions. “The security and sanctity of the mail are of paramount importance to the U.S. Postal Service. mail receptacles are secured and in good condition at all times. We apologize for any inconvenience that may have been experienced by customers in the Alamo Heights area. The letter collection box at 9211 Broadway was recently damaged, and we are in the process of replacing it as soon as possible. “At the branch at 1107 Austin Hwy, the layout of the parking lot did not allow for a drive-up collection box; however, one was installed near the building entrance for our customers’ convenience. Customers are reminded that they can securely deposit any outgoing mail inside the Post Office in our lobby dropbox, as well. RITTIMANN, MULES ADJUSTING TO WORLD’S CHALLENGES
If there’s anything we’ve come to expect over the past few months is to forever expect the unexpected. It’s also applicable for taking a new job. Throw in all the extenuating circumstances the world has seen since March, the natural learning curve of starting a new gig now takes an endless number of twists and turns. Classify new athletic director and head football coach Ron Rittimann in that category. Less than a month on the job when COVID-19 began mass shutdowns in mid-March, the veteran of the business encountered his most unique challenge yet. “I’m still trying to meet most people on campus, I’m barely moved into my office, and all of a sudden, everything is put on pause. I can’t see most of my guys, and I’m kinda starting from scratch again,” Rittimann said. An even more unique aspect is that his obligations to Johnson, where he served in the same role for the previous 12 years, did not end until the end of the month. “At that point, it’s trying to make sure everything is squared away at a good point [at Johnson], and you can’t necessarily get off going here,” Rittimann said, “I’ve never seen anything like that.” Thankfully, normalcy is slowly starting to settle in for him, 30 NOVEMBER 2020 | 78209magazine.com
his staff, and his Mules as they adjust to the times. “It was just so great to get back to work and see a lot of these guys for basically the first time. Months of Zooms and FaceTimes don’t do it justice.” Most importantly, their reunion is being put together safely. Each player has to pass a screening on their phones before even being allowed onto the field to practice. Once they get there, it’s followed by subsequent temperature checks, and consistent cleaning and sanitizing from the second practice starts when they sound the day’s final whistle. “I’m proud of everyone for doing their part. This isn’t easy for anyone involved with the program, even beyond the players and coaches. We’re accommodating, we’re adjusting, and we’re getting there.” More importantly, as he continues to transition to the new phase of his career, he’s glad he and his team can focus on the fun part and reprieve of this all: being able to finally play. “This community has been great. Just so many great, helpful and understanding people have helped us get to this point,” Rittimann said. “There is no other place I’d rather be than Alamo Heights.”

School News BELOVED SMH FACULTY MEMBER HONORED WITH OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD
Former Saint Mary’s Hall (SMH) Upper School Social Studies Teacher Paul Gage, beloved by many students, alumni, and colleagues, has been selected for the University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator Award. Students accepted into the University of Chicago Class of 2024 were asked to nominate an educator who has positively impacted their lives and whose guidance has helped them along the path toward intellectual growth. Responses were received from thousands of students in recognition of these educators. Mr. Gage joined the Saint Mary’s Hall faculty in 2003 and retired after 17 years. He received SMH’s Master Teacher Award in 2009 and 2015. Mr. Gage has impacted generations of SMH families over the years and has attended many basketball games, acted as an extra in numerous school productions, and actively keeps in touch with many alumni. Today he serves as a substitute teacher. The University of Chicago’s distinguished award, which has existed for more than 30 years, honors educators such as Mr. Gage, who are exceptional in their field and are role models for their students. Award winners receive a commemorative award, certificate, and letter that includes details from the student who nominated them. A virtual event celebrating this year’s winners was held on October 21. “Receiving the Outstanding Educator Award from the University of Chicago was a wonderful retirement gift and such a positive way to end a 50-plus-year career in education. I have been especially impressed with how the university has personalized the experience,” said Mr. Gage. “They shared Sam Eckert’s ‘20 very touching and thoughtful nominating statement. It is an award I value and treasure.” Saint Mary’s Hall teachers often serve as mentors for life to many of our students. Circle school founder Isabeth Hardy saw Specials classes like art, music, yoga, and gardening as just as important as academic core subjects. In her thesis -- which has shaped the path of our school since we opened in 1965 -- Hardy writes, “Increasingly in this society, life is disjointed, segmental, privatized and isolated, specific and unshared. The divisions among individuals, groups, and the earth is profound. Human memory is lost. Human vision is short. The human mission is personal and momentary.” Integration is the practice our founder offers as a counterbalance: to integrate is to weave parts into a greater whole, to generate a curriculum that is “an education for life.” Integration connects us with the wheel of life as a whole and connects each individual into our community and culture. Since its launch in 2018, Olmos Park Youth Commission (OPYC) members have engaged in more than 40 programs and donated nearly 1,000 hours of community service. Members participate in programs and events they create as well as meeting quarterly with industry and local leaders. Youth members gain practical skills like organizing, planning, public service, exchanging and debating ideas and team building.

FALL CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS Topping the calendar of OPYC programs includes an election awareness campaign, a mentoring initiative, a job opportunities initiative for teens as well as a collection drive. Election Awareness Campaign For some OYPC members, this fall marked their first election to vote. OPYC implemented a Learn About Elections awareness campaign chaired by Bryce Mazloum and Henry Satel. The campaign spread the word about how elections are organized in our area, how to register to vote, a listing of candidates, San Antonio’s voting deadlines and options for where to vote. The campaign also featured ways young people could work at a poll as a student election clerk or volunteer for a candidate or political party. Mentoring Initiative Co-chairs Lila Kelley and Cati Tamez, oversee Tutoring Teens, a mentoring initiative with the goal of matching OPYC teens who are skilled in various academics, fine arts and/or sport with those in the Olmos Park community who seek assistance in any of these areas. Participating teens may choose to either be compensated or earn community service hours. Enterprising Teens Precautions due to COVID-19 caused many teens’ jobs or internships to be disrupted or outright eliminated this past summer. In response, OPYC’s youth board launched a teen work initiative titled Jobs for Teens. As a result, some OPYC teens were able to gain work experience with local businesses. The second phase of that initiative will be co-chaired by Brittin McBirnie and Eli Greenberg, with the goal of identifying opportunities with local businesses that plan to offer internships and/or paid opportunities occurring this holiday season and next summer.

This initiative may expand to include other apparel categories and coincide with OPYC’s 2nd annual toy & gift drive that is scheduled during the holidays.

Her husband was being deployed. I spent probably a half-hour with them, and the dad thanked me so many times because it got them thinking about other things,” Bonnie says. Airport staffers implemented the idea after learning how well it worked at the Los Angeles International Airport. Pups n' Planes has been reducing blood pressure and turning frowns upside down for six years. “In the car, she knows that we are almost at the airport. She gets so excited! Her job is to make people smile. She does that job.” And if you saw Bella, you would smile, too. The girl team also spends time at the airport USO, softening the loneliness and longing of our troops, so familiar to military life. While Bella offers kisses, Canine Explosive Detection Supervisor Sgt. Andres Lopez, and his police dog Keyno, provide safety and security. “We are there to make sure that the traveling public is safe, the dog makes that any threats associated with aviation there aren’t real threats,” says the airport K9 police officer. Lopez and Keyno “nose around," sniffing out threats that could come from a parked car, a suitcase, or a person. “Dogs are about as mobile as you can get,” says Lopez. He means the nose is mobile.

The San Antonio International Airport is HUGE! It recently broke a record, flying some 15,000 people A DAY, for a total of 10.36 million passengers in 2019. Passengers most certainly frequent the airport, but pups do too. Meet Bella. Bella is a petite dog with light, wavy hair, offering everyone she meets the sweetest smile. Several hours a week, Bella and owner Bonnie Gioiello roam the airport, searching out the tired, the weary, and the bored. “If they look up and smile, they are a dog lover. If they don't,

Airport therapy dogs help soothe people who may be upset because of a long wait, delayed or cancelled flight.
I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. 2020 has been a rough ride, but hey, I like rides! In this season, a friend says that she heard about a run on the stores—not grocery stores, but the yarn and knitting stores. It seems like people are sitting in to remain safe and to relax. A contentious election, and a pandemic, makes a body want to do just that. South Texas winters are only a few months long. Nonetheless, frigid days, dry air, and freezes affect us animals, too. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the ASPCA, has suggestions on the “winterizing” of your pet. You winterize your car, don’t you? Underneath our fur is skin. But, taking Fido out into the cold, then back into a heated house, then out into the cold for another walk, and in again, the swift changes in temperature aggravates the skin. “Bathe your pets as little as possible during cold spells,” advises the ASPCA. “Washing too often can remove essential oils,” Savee Dalgo is Communications Coordinator for the ASPCA. He suggests using moisturizing shampoos and rinses to comfort winter skin. And while you’re at it, pick up a home humidifier. These inexpensive steam-spouters will help the whole family to be more comfortable. Summers are blistering here, and some people shave pups. But don’t do it! Our coats keep us warm. If you insist, give your dog a trim. For the Chihuahuas or Dachshunds out there, ASPCA highly recommends doggy outerwear and sweaters, especially ones with high collars or turtlenecks. Fresh water is just as important when it’s cold, as proper hydration moistens our skin. You like a soft, cozy bed on a cold winter’s night—and we do too. “Make sure that your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off of the floor and away from drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect,” says Dalgo. Some people think that animals should not be in the house. But: “If it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your animals inside.” Pups hate being separated from their “pack.” If you think it’s ok to isolate a dog from the family, please, don’t get a dog. Neighbors have the legal right to call the authorities if they feel a dog lacks proper care. “If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or killed,” warns the ASPCA. There are laws against such treatment. It is natural to bring Fido on errands in the winter because it is so much cooler. But it can get too cold. “Cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold, and cause animals to freeze to death.” Yikes! If you want Fido to have a ride, throw a big blanket in the back. he Alamo. The Missions. The Riverwalk. These are San Antonio’s most beloved icons. We live in a city steeped in history and culture, and there are many places that define our roots and make us proud to live here. The world is moving pretty fast these days, even as we’ve been forced to slow down and rethink the way we do things during this pandemic. However, several local businesses have withstood the world’s changes to become iconic, and Josephine Street restaurant has definitely earned its place on that list as a heritage restaurant.
Josephine Street opened its doors in 1979 in a unique building that had been vacant for many years as the giant oak tree growing through the middle of the building continued to reach for the heavens. Originally built in 1909, the building was home to Finck’s Meat Market for decades. When Pat Molak and Mary Jane Malley decided to open their Josephine Street eatery, they wanted to preserve the history and the integrity of the tree. However, the tree eventually succumbed to nature, and although it’s no longer alive, the owners have reinforced it and kept it as the centerpiece of the restaurant. Inside, the restaurant is cozy and intimate. The wood floors have seen better days, and they aren’t as level as they once were, but the rustic charm is warm and inviting, just like the friendly staff that will greet you as if you were family. The enticing aroma of homemade cooking will immediately strike you, and the menus on the wall announce the specials of the day and their Josephine Street favorites. Jake Molak, the Manager of Quality, describes Josephine Street as a “bluecollar steakhouse,” serving affordable home-cooked meals that keep you coming back for more. Their Black Angus Prime New York Strip, one of their most popular dishes, is simply cooked to order on a flat top grill and topped with their signature lemon butter. Jake states, “We keep it simple and let the beef speak for itself. Our goal is consistency. It’s what keeps customers coming back.” Another favorite is their Chicken Fried Steak. It’s as big
as your face and smothered in a delicious cream gravy that would make your grandma proud. Many restaurants overlook the breading, and it comes out if the gravy isn’t seasoned just right, but at Josephine Street, no culinary detail is overlooked. Even the thick-cut onion rings are seasoned to perfection. Other menu standouts include their Cheeseburgers, the Country Club, and their delicious Blackened Gulf Coast Redfish. All of the entrées come with your choice of side, one of which is their outstanding homemade pinto beans. The menu features something for everyone but focuses on those tried and true favorites that appeal to our blended Texican culture here in South Texas. From the 16 oz. Texas T-Bone to the Pollo Verde, you’re sure to find something to please even the pickiest eaters. Start with a San Antonio Fiesta favorite, the Beef Anticuchos, or the Sausage & Queso Platter, and don’t you dare miss out on dessert and the Josephine Street Jack Daniels Pecan Pie. There’s a reason that Josephine Street has been a San Antonio favorite for over 40 years, and their goal is to be around for another 40 years. The menu stays true to its roots, serving great home-style comfort food at affordable prices in a comfortable and eclectic atmosphere. Just like that old oak tree will forever be a part of that old building, Josephine Street restaurant will continue to be an integral member of the San Antonio heritage restaurant family for many generations to come.
