GLADSTONE GOOD NEWS

Here is some good news submitted to The World Headquarters of

The Gladstone Good News Thank you for sending in the Skateboard photo A.M. Feel free to send in photos whenever you like.

M.W. Thank you for the photos you sent in of the Heart River overflowing. Gives us a good idea of how full the river can get.

View From the Front Porch Vistas of green grass, the smell of freshly cut lawns, rolling hills, river running through, cottonwood trees, week-end car shows, auto racing, rodeos, parades, antelope, deer, flowers blooming everywhere, music in the streets, amazing birds, ballgames, fishing all day, your own garden and so many more things that it would fill up a page and then some. All these things are opportunities to live an awesome life, forget about the opportunities to make money, that is a given here in Gladstone. The opportunity to enjoy every moment of every day is right in our own backyard. I for one, will take that wonderful deep breath of grass filled aroma and thank my lucky stars, the ones that can be seen here in Gladstone. Sometimes you have to smell the roses! Gladstone you are so lucky, seize the day and make it yours. Contact Tim @ 701-690-3301

GLADSTONE GOOD NEWS Meet Billy Peterson. Billy is the gentleman who is building the three rustic style homes on the Westside. Billy is a third generation home builder. Rustic western outdoor style of home and lifestyle is what he loves. Around July 15th he will have two of the homes completed and the third shortly thereafter. Homes will have between 1,800 to 2,400sq.ft of finished living space. I think it is great to have different styles, it keeps things interesting. There is always more than one right answer.

Billy Peterson is the contractor for the three houses on the Westside

Logs used for the columns for the porch. Very cool idea that comes from Billy’s days of building log houses in the western part of the United States. Billy likes real wood not the vinyl siding. That’s also why he uses wood doors inside and out.

I was asked to clarify something. Billy Peterson’s company is Bishop Peterson Construction, called BP construction. Tyler Mason’s company is Bearing Point Construction also called BP construction. These are two different companies. These homes are being built by Billy’s company not Tyler’s company. Thank you Billy Peterson for your time.

I, like most of you in Gladstone, wish them a successful year here in Gladstone. Keep doing great work guys. Home Town Memories:

By Wayne Mckirdy

1929-1947

These are my memories as I remember things growing up in Gladstone

Cap at The White Eagle Gas Station where the Side Tracks is located now. Love the old gas pumps.

I was born on June 9th 1929 where the Side Tracks Cafe is today. When I was born, it was a Café, but later became the White Eagle Gas Station. Soon thereafter my sister married Casper Enger and moved into the building with us. Irene, my sister, had a baby girl named Gayleen. My father, Herbert Mckirdy, named his first son Herbert. Like my father, my brother enjoyed automobiles. I remember my Dad’s big school bus and my brothers’ Buick. Model A Fords would show up at the station along with the Maxwell from across the river, or Tom’s Packard. One car that I really remember, but never got to see driven, was a Whippet Nash that my father and brother put together. They used parts from both cars and made the Whippet Nash out of those parts. I would have loved to see that car driven, but sadly never did. Telephones during this time were scarce. I remember people would use the phone for emergencies or have important messages left for them at Cap’s Place. Phone callers didn’t have privacy back then, that’s just the way it was. Cap and Irene later opened up Cap’s Place after moving from The White Eagle Gas Station in the late 1930’s.

In the late 1930’s the White Eagle changed hands and was renamed the Gladstone Farmers Union. During this time Cap and Irene moved to the old HT headquarters and Cap and Irene started Cap’s Place just south of there. Shown with Cap and Irene are their two daughters Gayleen and Marlene. In the photo above you can see the car ramp and below is the oil trap. Check out Wayne in 1947 photo of the Gladstone Basketball Team on the back cover. Wayne is the tall one with the stylin’ hair. The team had great uniforms with knee pads.

GLADSTONE GOOD NEWS

Mike Pierce

Gladstonian of the Month Mike Pierce is a lifelong Gladstone and Dickinson resident. Mike is married and has four small children. The Pierce family lives next door to his parents farm just south on the Enchanted Highway. Mike doesn’t farm like his parents, but he would if he could make ends meet by just farming. For now, he works for Consolidated, is happy and grateful to have a good job to support his growing family.

Some things never change. Mike’s attitude about wanting to work hard so he can bring up his children so they have a good life, is the same attitude that people had when they arrived here in Gladstone 130 years ago. In the winter, Mike enjoys snowmobiling when he has a chance. When Mike is working on the homestead there is little time for anything else. Now that Mike has four children his priority is his family. Mike is a very proud family guy. That was very clear to me from the very first moment I spoke with him. I didn’t talk to people at his place of employment, but I’ll bet you that he is one hell of a good employee. It’s refreshing to see and hear that kind of attitude in your work, your home and your family life.

“We did the sheetrock, walls and even concrete to save money. Everything is so expensive.”

GLADSTONE GOOD NEWS The family recently moved from Dickinson to Gladstone. “It’s a lot of work, but I love it here” says Mike. He hopes to plant grass with an irrigation system by next year. Mike wants his children to be able to play on the new lawn.

Mike in front of his beautiful house that his family just completed.

Mike really likes things simple. North Dakota brings that out in people. When he wants to get out, he heads to South Dakota to see the attractions there. Maybe one of these days it will be Disneyland but for now things are just fine by him. Mike was telling me about all the wind break trees he planted on the property. His house is on a hill where the winds can be very substantial. His folks’ place is down behind a small hill, and they have plenty of old trees that seem to make all the difference. Mike has already planted a garden. The majority of the work seems to be finished, which was to get those four bedrooms done for the family and the occasional guest. Thank you Mike for being so friendly and taking time out to visit and tell me what you are up to. Another young Gladstonian that knows what he wants and how to get it.

“In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don’t try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present.” Lao Tzu

GLADSTONE GOOD NEWS

Gladestone, West Dakota is a town where all the men are handsome and strong and the women are beautiful and smart. The dogs don’t bark or bite and every child is an angel.

Layne Street is that place where your mind has a tendency to wonder. Having not a care in the world best describes Layne Street. Spike stops to look at a couple of children playing in their inflatable round pool. They don’t notice Spike, they are much too busy laughing. You know that innocent laughter that seems to come only from children. After a few moments, Spike continues down the sidewalk and crosses over to the other side of the street. Paul and Renee are out on their front porch having a cold drink and listening to records on a player. Paul always tells people that he likes the way the records sound. “Kinda makes me feel like I’m listening to the music back in those days” says Paul. Contact Tim @ 701-690-3301

GLADSTONE GOOD NEWS

Folks around town say that even though Paul and Renee are young, they are old souls. “Now what are you doing here Spike?” says Renee. Spike wags his tail in acknowledgment. “Well come here Spike” says Renee. Spike walks over to the porch and jumps on the outside sofa where Renee is sitting, putting his head on Renee’s lap.

Went looking for Spike let him in if he shows up

Mary finishes her cleaning for the night. She fills Spike’s water bowl with clean water and fills his food bowl. “Come here Spike your food’s ready” says Mary. That’s odd, thinks Mary. You don’t have to tell Spike his food is ready as he practically knocks you down to get to the bowl. “Spike, Spiiiike, Spiiiike where are you?” She looks everywhere… no Spike. Panic starts to set in. She closes up the Pub to look for Spike leaving a message on the door. Folks in Gladestone don’t lock their doors… not even the Pub door.
