Academy principal remains in place after decision to leave is put on hold AMID all the changes at Winterbourne International Academy, one is being put on ice - at least temporarily. Richard Haupt, the school’s principal, had been set to leave at the end of August after putting in his resignation in the spring. But he has now agreed to stay on, probably until the end of the year, while his replacement is found. The academy (WIA) had not immediately advertised the post due to some areas of the organisation being “restructured” and as a result, it was thought unlikely that a suitable candidate would be able to join until January. With the current leadership model considered “very effective”, Mr Haupt was asked to delay his departure. He said he had “gladly agreed” and that it would be “a pleasure” to continue to serve the academy, its students and staff. Mr Haupt only joined WIA

THE future of the playground and Beesmoor playing field has been explored at a special open day in Frampton Cotterell. The playing field committee and outdoor play equipment specialists Touchwood organised the event on 23 July to get the views of local people about proposed changes to the play equipment. It’s hoped to transform the area, with new play equipment made in wood and other

help shape the proposals that will emerge for the future of the play area. The committee are also looking for funding for the new project.

ONLOOKERS headed for motorway bridges and roadside verges to watch a massive transformer being carried on a low-loader to Iron Acton. Allelys Heavy Haulage, contractors for National Grid, transported the 235-tonne piece of equipment to a substation as part of an upgrade project to ensure reliable power supplies. The transformer - needed to change the voltage of electricity before it is transmitted through the power network - was carried on a 55 metre-long (180ft) heavy haulage lorry from Avonmouth docks to Iron Acton.

With a police escort and accompanying special haulage team, it travelled between ten and 15mph along an indirect route chosen to avoid hazards such as weak bridges and narrow turning points. That involved using the M49, M4 and M5 northbound to the Stroudwater junction, where it turned at the roundabout to head south again to Falfield. It then went up Tortworth Hill and through Cromhall and Rangeworthy to Latteridge and on to the substation, with traffic stopped when necessary to make room for the vehicle.

WESTERLEIGH councillor Claire Young has been chosen to fight the parliamentary seat for Thornbury and Yate for the Liberal Democrats the next time Britain goes to the polls. She was elected in a ballot of members after former MP Steve Webb, who lost out to Conservative Luke Hall in last year’s General Election, recently announced he would not be trying to regain the seat. Local Liberal Democrats said Councillor Young, who has represented the Westerleigh ward on South Gloucestershire

Council since 2007, was chosen from a strong field of candidates. She lives in Coalpit Heath with her family and is her party’s deputy leader on the council. Councillor Young said: “The party locally has been going from strength to strength recently, with a massive influx of members, particularly young people determined to use their energy to help build the future for them and their families. The party now has more members than at any time in over a decade. “I am humbled by the confidence people have placed in me. Over the years I have met so many lovely people working together for our community and I am really looking forward to my changed role in that work.” Mr Webb said: “I have known and worked closely with Claire for many years and she has been at the centre of all we have been doing with local people. “I am delighted to be passing on the baton to someone who is as energetic and committed to the community as Claire. I will be giving her my full support in the urgent work to be done to help our country and community.” Ms Young has already launched her first major campaign, asking people to “Tell Claire” what they most want done to help them. She said: “It may be a local problem, it may be a service that needs improving, or it may be getting some aspect of the state off people’s backs. People want control over their own lives but with access to support when they need it.”

Head agrees to stay on at Winterbourne academy as departure put on ice THE principal of Winterbourne International Academy has put his departure on hold and will continue to lead the school for at least part of the next academic year. It was in the spring that Richard Haupt announced his resignation from the academy, less than a year after taking up the appointment. At the time he said he would leave at the end of August before the new term started in September. But the academy (WIA) has only recently advertised for Mr Haupt’s replacement, having “restructured” some areas of the organisation. It said while it would have been ideal to have a new principal start in September, it envisaged that the appropriate candidate might not be able to join until the start of 2017.

WIA said as the current leadership model was “proving to be very effective”, Mr Haupt had agreed to remain for a time to ensure an effective hand-over to the new principal. Mr Haupt had taken on his WIA role when the Ridings Federation of Academies, which runs WIA, was headed up by Beverley Martin as chief executive principal. There had been criticism of her leadership style and she left after only about eight months. She was replaced in the top job by Adam Williams, who was faced with getting both WIA and Yate International Academy out of the “requires improvement” category imposed by education watchdog Ofsted. In a message to WIA pupils, staff and parents, Mr Haupt said: “We are now in a completely different place as an academy.

“We have a dynamic new chief executive principal, the anticipated examination results look healthy and the new lesson score system is showing us that 96 per cent of students are having good or outstanding lessons. “I personally would like to pay tribute to the students, staff and parents who have contributed to this unstoppable momentum. “I have gladly agreed to remain in post until my successor is appointed. It is a pleasure to continue to serve Winterbourne International Academy and its wonderful students and staff.” Mr Haupt had moved to Winterbourne to replace Rob Evans, who retired after being at WIA and its predecessor, the Ridings High School, for 33 years - the last six as principal.

Young chefs at Brimsham Green School cook up a treat in Rotary Club challenge PUPILS at Brimsham Green School, Yate, cooked up twocourse meals in a young chef competition supported by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club. The eight food nutrition and health students had made their way through the contest’s heats to reach the final, which was judged by local experts Tom Herbert of Hobbs House Bakery and Ann Murray of the Cooking4 cookery school. Each of the year-nine youngsters had two hours to create a healthy main meal and dessert, with at least one fruit or vegetable to be featured to meet the recommended five-a-day requirement. The dishes also had to be the kind to appear on the menu in a themed restaurant. The junior chefs devised main meals such as fish pie, chicken

desserts. After assessing the entries, Tom and Ann decided that Emily Bogie’s goat cheese and onion

pizza, with apple pastry roses, met the competition’s criteria and awarded her the young chef 2016 title. Tom, one half of the Fabulous Baker Brothers double act, said: “It’s really encouraging to see what talent we have rising through our local schools. “The demonstration of skill and imagination shown at Brimsham Green is a taste of the wonderful food to come.” Teacher Adam Mills said: “I was really impressed with the outstanding quality and standard of the dishes presented. The students spent a lot of their time and effort ensuring the brief was met within the time limit.” The other finalists were Laura Tomasin, Georgie Allan, Mia Thorpe, Joe Turner, Megan Walker, Jas Edwards and Owen Batchen.

Husband and wife team switch Summer reading Lions club roles again LIONS Club couple Ailsa and Robin Young have swapped the presidency again after both spending time in the top job. Robin was the long running president of Bradley Stoke Lions for 15 years before handing over the baton to Ailsa for her term of office. That has just come to an end and Robin has assumed the role once more. Ailsa said: “During my year, the Lions made donations to a number of causes within the area and performed a large number of service activities to help those who needed assistance.

www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk

“We also enjoyed a number of social occasions, including a black tie ball, boules match, a pudding night, various meals out and even a croquet competition. “I would like to thank the members of Bradley Stoke Lions for their friendship, support and the work they have done to help others. I know Robin will continue the good work.” As well as the Bradley Stoke club, Robin also took on the presidency of Bristol Brunel Lions in 2009. Ailsa said:”That was a hectic year but he thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Action taken to keep Winterbourne pond and wildlife healthy AN angling club has been appointed to help manage the health of the fish stock in Winterbourne duck pond. The pond is popular with anglers and families, who like to feed the ducks. But last summer large numbers of dead fish were found floating in the water as a result of poor oxygen levels in the pond. It is believed bread thrown for the ducks to eat - a practice now known to be bad for both ducks and the water they inhabit - caused the loss of oxygen. Rotting food encourages algae and pollutes the water, affecting the health of the pond’s wildlife.

Winterbourne Parish Council has installed an aerator in the water and continues to manage the area around the pond but has appointed Frome Vale Angling Club to control all aspects of angling. Anyone who wants to fish the pond now has to be a member of the club and have a rod licence, a document that can be bought at any post office. To enrol in the club, email john-treasure@sky.com for information about membership rates and rules. There are special rates for people living in the civil parish of Winterbourne and for under-16s.

Woodland work undertaken to make improvements for wildlife and visitors

We have re-branded come and visit us...

A TEAM that looks after Sims Hill Wood has warned users of work that will be taking place during the summer to create a surfaced path. The community wood falls partly in Winterbourne parish and it is hoped the path will make it easier for people to enjoy the surroundings. Josh Roberts, chairman of Sims Hill Community Woodland, said: “Over the next few months we’ll be felling some trees along the route and using machines to create the path. “The public right of way will remain open but we ask people to respect warning signs and instructions from the contractors. “This is all about making Sims Hill even better for wildlife,

people and the local community as a whole. The surfaced path will make it easier and more attractive for walkers and help us look after the wood properly.

“The tree felling will allow more light to reach the woodland floor through the tree canopy. This is good for the ground flora, wildlife and keeping the path dry. “There will be some disruption and the new path may look messy at first but in a few months it will blend in and be a part of the wood.” Liaison between the Sims Hill team and their colleagues at nearby Splatts Abbey Wood has led to a strong relationship with the University of the West of England, which provides a number of student volunteers to

Trial minor injuries service at GP surgeries used by hundreds of patients every month HUNDREDS of people in South Gloucestershire are being treated every month for minor injuries at their GP surgeries instead of heading to hospital. Every GP practice in the district has been commissioned to take part in the minor injuries service, which started in April for a two-year trial period. It means patients can avoid spending hours waiting in hospital A&E departments if suffering a minor cut, bite or burn. It also takes pressure off the Yate Minor Injuries Unit. Under the system, patients can get an appointment during normal surgery hours at their registered surgery if they have an injury which can be seen by a practice nurse. Dr Ann Sephton, of South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “We want to take the pressure off our doctors and nurses caring for the most seriously ill and injured by providing another minor injuries service at a place, and with people, its patients are familiar with. “No-one wants to spend hours going to one of our urgent care centres with a slight injury and waiting when the alternative is to call their GP surgery and make an appointment to be seen soon.” The CCG said the proportion of children treated for minor injuries during the summer increased substantially so local surgeries would probably be a better alternative to hospital. If an injury needed an X-ray, a referral would be arranged nearby. But it stressed the minor injuries service was introduced in addition to the care available at local emergency departments and minor injury units and was not a replacement. Anyone needing treatment for a minor injury outside surgery opening hours should go to the minor injury unit in Yate or at the Southmead Hospital site.

New school taking shape at Lyde Green

NO wonder these boys and girls are smiling - they've just seen their new school for the first time. The children will start at the new Lyde Green Primary School from September having spent their first school year in the adapted drama hall at Downend School. The four and five-year-olds donned hard hats and hi-vis jackets when they popped in to inspect progress at their future school. The school is being built on the new Lyde Green estate between the ring road and motorway at Emersons Green East. The £4.75million school has been funded through Section 106 money paid by developers to the council to provide educational facilities for the new community. It will eventually have up to 420 places for pupils age four to 11 and will serve the new estate

Mr Roberts, former executive head of Downend and Mangotsfield schools, said: "The children have seen the plans of the school but this was the first time they had visited the building. "The chance to see where they will be learning in September is really special for them and they are very excited." Mr Roberts said the children

had received a brilliant start to their primary education: "The children have had a fabulous year at Downend School. The drama studio was refurbished especially for them so it looked and felt just like a primary school, with their own building and own entrance. "They have made stunning progress so we are really pleased." Olivia, five, said: "It's good because it's big and there's lots of rooms. I'm looking forward to doing learning."

Coalpit Heath garden open for national scheme during summer

Classes open for entries at annual village horticultural show

THE grounds of Serridge House in Coalpit Heath can be visited during August as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Visitors in groups of between 12 and 70 can be accommodated by arrangement to see the two-and-a-half acres of garden in Henfield Road. Among the features are mature trees, heather and conifer beds and a woodland area with a pond. There is also a colourful courtyard with old farm implements, lakeside walks and one-off tree carvings. The National Gardens Scheme has been running since 1927 to give people the chance to visit as many different kinds of private gardens as possible, ranging from small gardens on modern housing estates to grander grounds. In that time it has also raised more than £45 million for nursing and caring charities. To arrange to visit Serridge House, phone 01454 773188.

SCHEDULES have been published for the annual Iron Acton horticultural show, with a host of classes waiting to be filled. The show will be held in Iron Acton Parish Hall on Saturday, September 10, with judging taking place from late morning. Visitors will be able to see the entries from 2.15pm and later can put in a bid for those items put into an end-of-show auction. Awards will be presented after the sale of produce. Organisers of the event said they had taken on board comments from last year’s show and added a class for novice flower arrangers for the first time. There will also be a baking class for men only, who will be tested on their production of a coffee and walnut cake. Schedules can be seen on the Iron Acton village website.

Young innovators impress judges at annual schools challenge STUDENTS from Brimsham Green School went head to head with a team from Chipping Sodbury School in an annual competition for young innovators. More than 60 entries were received for the contest, with

honours even between the schools. Brimsham Green’s Samuel Bidder won the the product design category, while its other winners were Nathan Ross in graphics and Charlotte Stephenson in food technology.

Chipping Sodbury took the overall young innovator title, courtesy of Jordan Longdin, with wins for Zoe Perry for textiles and Toni Graham in the senior product design category. The event was run by Chipping Sodbury Rotary

Club, with a past winner of the challenge at the judging as a special guest. Roxanne Pollard is now a prototype engineer at Renishaw and she gave a presentation to the entrants while judges considered their verdict.

Chipping Sodbury set to welcome cream of racing cyclists in Tour of Britain SPECTATORS are expected to pack the centre of Chipping Sodbury when top level cyclists race through the town in the Tour of Britain. Sir Bradley Wiggins plans to be among the riders after returning from the Rio Olympics, with Mark Cavendish another of the big names due to feature. The country’s premier stage race takes cyclists from Glasgow to London between September 4-11, with stage five reaching South Gloucestershire on Thursday, September 8. Starting in Aberdare, Wales, at 11am, the route will take the pack into England and on to Wotton-under-Edge. Having gone through the village of Kingswood, the spectacle will move swiftly on to Wickwar and along the B4060 into Chipping Sodbury. Racers will then go up High Street and down Culverhill Road, past Chipping Sodbury School and out to Wapley. The route continues past Westerleigh Crematorium and through Pucklechurch as the competitors make their way to Bath for the finish, which is estimated to be at 3.30pm. Anyone who misses the stage will have a second chance of seeing the event on Saturday, September 10, when Bristol will host the penultimate day of racing. The stage will include both an individual time trial and a circuit race, each starting on Durdham Downs. Although final times have yet to be announced, the Bristol action is set to get going at about 10am for the time trial and about 2.30pm for the circuit race.

Students in Yate and Winterbourne join opera company to stage end-of-term production PUPILS at the three schools making up the Ridings’ Federation of Academies helped English Touring Opera stage a production about migrants. The youngsters from Yate and Winterbourne international academies and the Woodlands primary phase in Yate were all involved in the end-of-year performance. It was the first time since the federation was formed that the schools had joined up for such a project. Over five days the opera company was in residence, working with 50 pupils to produce Sand, Surf, Snow. It told how migrants made the journey from the Middle East to Europe, with some of the material coming from the pupils’ own ideas. The students took on a variety of roles, from performers to technicians and as part of the on-stage band. The week culminated in two performances at the Winterbourne Arts Centre

Extra £1.49 million will extend faster broadband to more rural areas MORE than 2,000 extra homes and businesses across South Gloucestershire will get access to faster fibre broadband as the rollout is extended to a wider area. A further £1.49 million is being invested into the scheme, with surveys being carried out to confirm which locations will benefit. A scheme between South Gloucestershire Council, BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme has already taken faster broadband to more than 18,000 homes and businesses across the district since it began in 2013. The latest investment will take coverage from 93 per cent to 95 per cent across the region by the end of 2017. John Goddard, chairman of the council’s resources subcommittee, said: “Most of the areas which will now be surveyed

are in some of our more rural village locations.” Matt Lloyd, BT’s programme manager, said: “This extension is great news for those communities that previously would have missed out. “Superfast broadband has a huge impact on the way we live. It helps business to move, act and trade quickly and effectively, enables schoolchildren to access their homework online and offers better access to e-commerce, social media and home entertainment.” But while welcoming the development, Liberal Democrat councillors have pressed for the right technology to be used. Westerleigh councillor, Claire Young, said: “Upgrading the local cabinet to fibre won’t help much if a home is connected to that cabinet by a long length of copper wire. The broadband will still be slow and unreliable.”

All change for Frome Valley church parishes with creation of new benefices A NEW benefice for Fromeside has been created to bring four church parishes together. The pastoral scheme came into effect at the end of July, with the benefice including the parishes of Winterbourne, Frampton Cotterell, Iron Acton and All Saints, Winterbourne Down. In early December, the rector of the benefice will be the Rev Malcolm Strange, priest in charge of St Peter’s in Frampton Cotterell. The diocese of Bristol, which announced details of the changes, said a Frenchay and Stapleton benefice had also been created, with the Rev Charles Sugden becoming rector immediately. As a result of the changes, the four benefices of Frampton Cotterell and Iron Acton; Frenchay and Winterbourne Down; Winterbourne and Stapleton no longer exist. The diocese said all the clergy who were licensed to those former benefices would be re-licensed under the new arrangements. A special service to mark the creation of the two benefices will take place during August.

Householders urged to apply Adoption system widened to for central heating grants increase chances of placing children with loving families before August deadline TIME is running out for householders in South Gloucestershire who don’t have central heating to apply for a grant to help them keep warm. Residents without central heating may be eligible for a grant of up to £4,500 to have a new system installed. But the funding is only available until the end of August. Those awarded a grant will be helped to overcome the significant barrier of high upfront costs by covering the installation of complete central heating systems, including the heating source, pipework and radiators. The grants are financed through central Government not local council tax, with a consortium of local authorities led by South Gloucestershire Council winning £3.2 million to warm up the least energy efficient homes. Such properties have no central heating or have either expensive on-peak electric systems, plug-in heaters or open fires. The system, run by the Warm and Well scheme, could save a household an average of £250 a year, based on a family in a three-bed semi-detached house. Anyone interested in applying should email warm&well@ severnwye.org.uk or text WARM to 83010 as soon as possible. There is also an advice line on 0800 500 3076. Meanwhile, grants for cavity wall and loft insulation are also available through the Warm and Well scheme, which can save £160 per year on fuel bills. All grants are subject to a survey and availability.

A NEW approach is being taken in South Gloucestershire to try and get more children adopted by local families. The current system, which involves individual councils working on their own to find new homes for youngsters, can limit the options available and leave some children in temporary placements. Now South Gloucestershire Council’s children, adults and health committee has agreed to start the process that will involve it teaming up with neighbouring councils to place children with adoptive families. The Adoption West scheme will include all the former Avon councils, and Gloucestershire and Wiltshire councils, working together to find the best possible places in the combined area. But there is now a period of consultation to find out what people think of the plan. Responses will be collated, analysed and discussed before a final decision is taken. Jon Hunt, chairman of the committee, said: “I am looking forward to working together with other councils to increase the options available to all of us looking to place children into loving homes for life. “This is something very close to my heart and I am pleased to say we have a fantastic track record on adoption, with no children currently waiting to be adopted.”

Crowds flock to Frenchay Flower Show ENTRIES and attendance were well up at the 73rd Annual Frenchay Flower Show and the judges commented on a ‘good looking show’. The event on July 16 organised by the Frenchay and Hambrook Horticultural Society included a wide programme of entertainment, starting with Winds of Change, a new addition, who got proceedings off to a triumphant start playing a number of band favourites including Summertime, Pennsylvania 6500 and Britain’s Heritage. The Show Prince and Princess, Ryan Stonelake and Rosie Spence, both aged five, processed through the showground to pull a bow at the entrance to the marquee, signifying the official start of the show. The opening was followed with a performance by the Bristol

Starlight Cheer Squad under their director Deb Denny. A display by the Hawk and Owl Trust, also newcomers to the show, included a Barn Owl, Little Owl and juvenile Kestrel and Peregrine Falcon and proved very popular. Throughout the afternoon vintage buses provided transport between the flower show and the vintage vehicle display in the grounds of the former Frenchay Hospital. Frenchay Parish Church provided an opportunity to try bell ringing. Teas were available in the Unitarian Chapel and, in addition to housing the photographic and flower arranging classes of the show, the Friends Meeting House opened its beautiful garden and provided the venue for a model railway display. The expected Spitfire flypast was unfortunately cancelled due to low cloud.

Teas were provided in the Village Hall by Frenchay WI groups and the enjoyable atmosphere was enhanced throughout the afternoon by performances from The Marshfield Brass Band and The Cleeve Singers.

19

Towards the end of the afternoon the cups and awards were presented by Jack Lopresti MP and the day was ably brought to a close by flower show committee chairman Philip Whitby-Coles with the traditional auction of produce.

Now summer is here

W

ELL the first day of summer has passed, so summer must be here surely? Are you ready for those hot balmy days or not? So how do you protect your hair without having to wear a hat all day To minimise and prevent sun damage to your hair it is vital that you shield them from the sun and the environment factors, so when you can it makes sense to wear a hat. In the same way you protect your skin with a sun cream, protect your hair – by applying a containing cream with a sun protector factor and then after a day in the sun make sure you re-moisturise your hair by using a hydrating conditioner and if possible leave in over night. Summer make up There are lots of foundation and lip sticks that now contain an UVA sunscreen. Check

your current make up and make sure you are protected from the sun. If not invest in sun protection makeup for the summer months. Remember the ageing effects the sun can have on our skin. Bronzing We love a tan, but do we really want to look too tanned nowadays? It’s good to get that sun kissed flowing tint but a really bronzed look can be a bit dating. A great option is a bronzer which you can get in

both gel and a powder. Spend some time getting some advice on what sits best of your skin – then apply liberally and then you get that instant natural tanned looked. Summer Fragrance I am a fan of the same fragrance all year round. However we really should think about a much lighter fragrance. If you have favourite brand then take a look at their lighter scents and a lovely floral scent can really lift your spirits.

THE final document needed to complete an up-to-date local plan for South Gloucestershire has been published. The Policies, Sites and Places (PSP) Plan will guide future planning decisions in the district up to 2027 and has now gone out for formal consultation. Anyone who wants to comment can view the document on the South Gloucestershire Council website, at Yate One Stop Shop in Kennedy Way and in local libraries. Responses have to be made by September 8. Colin Hunt, the council’s lead member for planning, transport and the environment, urged residents to comment on the plan before it was submitted to an independent inspector. He said within the plan there were moves to designate more than 230 local green spaces - a means of providing special protection against development for green areas of particular importance to local communities. But Claire Young, the Liberal Democrat lead member on environment and communities, said: “It’s disappointing there are open spaces that have not been protected in this document because of objections by South Gloucestershire Council itself as the landowner.” She said if the spaces had been needed previously, they were needed even more now as a consequence of the increase in housing and population. She said: “Local residents need to use the consultation to make it clear to the council that their valued green spaces deserve protection, now and into the future.”

POLICE will carry out a walking beat surgery in Frampton Cotterell to give local people the chance to raise issues with officers. Members of the local neighbourhood team will be in the village between noon and 2pm on Saturday, August 13. They have invited anyone with queries or matters to discuss to stop them during the walk-about.

Take a journey of discovery during annual festival PEOPLE in the Frome Valley area are being urged to take up something new through an annual festival of discovery. New hobbies, skills and interests will be promoted throughout September and October while the Discover Festival takes place in South Gloucestershire. Winterbourne library will be involved in the event, with activities ranging from a display and sale of goods by members of its craft group to exhibitions by

the Crossbow Camera Club. Line dancing, a talk on the history of Fry’s chocolate and a murder mystery event have also been planned. Most festival activities are free but some attract a small fee, while booking is required for certain events. Brochures containing all the information required can be picked up at the library. Details are also available on the South Gloucestershire Council website.

Around the W.I. Winterbourne Down WI At our July meeting we had a very informative talk by Mrs Alvis from Lyle Farm, Redhill, talking about making cheddar cheese. They use the milk from cows from three local farms; half being organic and half being conventional. Cheese is a living commodity and they export their cheese to over 30 countries. We had some tastings and the tip of the day was - do not open the packet until required and discard the original packaging and rewrap in your own clean packaging. A summer outing was enjoyed at Truffles Garden in Bishop Sutton and everyone who went enjoyed a lovely cream tea. Later in July we are celebrated the Queens Birthday in a members garden. Our next meeting will be on 1st September with a talk on the Queen’s Bodyguard. All are

welcome to join us at 7.30pm in All Saints Church Hall Winterbourne Evening WI The last month has seen a great deal of activity within our WI, including an evening trip on the Matthew around the City Docks, with a stop for fish and chips on board at Cumberland Basin. Members then discovered there was a bar on board and added drinks to the evening out. Two days later we were off on the Group outing to the Three Choirs Vineyard at Newent. At our July meeting we updated ourselves of the range of trips and events being promoted by the Avon Federation and a number of members will be going to the Federation Annual meeting at the BAWA Club in September. Four of our members will be competing in the InterFederation Bowls match in August and we wish them

well. The Frome Valley Group of WI’s will be meeting in the Winterbourne & District Community Centre for their Autumn meeting which includes lunch. Our speaker for the evening was Andrew Marker who gave a beautiful picture show with music. The remarkable photographs which he had taken on holidays were very high quality and the accompanying music captivated our members Although our next meeting is not until September we have a number of activities taking place, including a coffee morning in School Road on 17th August when everyone is welcome. Our major outing for the year to Sherborne and Sherborne Castle also takes place in August when over 30 members will be going for what we hope will be a fine weather day out. Looking ahead to our September meeting, we will be

welcoming Sally Taylor as our speaker, demonstrating flower arrangements for the table, and further ahead still our big 60 birthday party which we are planning with supper and entertainment. This meeting will be for members only, our only meeting where visitors are not invited. We were reminded that at our annual meeting this year a number of committee members will be retiring and new faces will be needed. Members were encouraged to put their

Petition launched against plans to cut the size of household wheelie-bins 7,000 tonnes a year. That would result in a recycling rate of 55 per cent by 2020 and net annual savings of between £800,000 and £1 million. A report to the council said South Gloucestershire generated more household waste per person than Bristol, Swindon or Bath and North East Somerset. It also said most people who responded to a consultation on proposed changes to the waste and recycling collections agreed or strongly agreed with the council’s aim of reducing waste and promoting recycling. Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the environment and community services committee, said: “At a time when we’re looking to find £22 million in savings, cutting the amount it costs us to throw things away -

money that could be better spent on other services - is clearly right.” She said there would be concessions for families with young children in nappies

A PETITION has been started to oppose the replacement of black wheelie-bins used for household waste with smaller containers. The standard 240-litre bins used by most people in South Gloucestershire will be replaced with those having a 140-litre capacity. South Gloucestershire Council said the move was part of efforts to increase levels of recycling. It claimed more than half the contents of the average black wheelie-bin could be recycled, which would lead to a cut in waste and save taxpayers’ money. While it planned to continue emptying the black bins every fortnight, the kerbside collection of materials for recycling would become a weekly exercise. The change is part of a fiveyear plan to increase recycling by

Warning given to cover up as skin cancer rates in South Gloucestershire rise Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice

Afew thoughts on recent events . . . AS somebody who has worked in retail and lived in South Gloucestershire all of my life before becoming the local MP, the last few weeks have been eye opening. I could write a book about the events that have occurred since the 23rd June, but for now, I hope a few thoughts about the period will suffice. On the morning of the 24th June I watched the referendum results with a few close friends and colleagues in my office in the Commons. It was clear in the early hours of the morning that it was a decisive vote to leave. It felt seismic – a huge event in British political history, I could hear a helicopter hovering above Downing Street. David Cameron resigned shortly after 8am. I was sorry to see him go. I was exhausted, but managed to get about 90 minutes sleep before returning to work. Monday 27th – The Chancellor did what he could to stabilise the markets, David Cameron made a statement to the Commons, and later I met likeminded MPs to discuss who the next leader of the Conservative Party should be. Things were moving fast. Wednesday 29th - It is surprising how exceeding popular you very quickly become during a leadership contest. I met the leadership candidates in various rooms around the palace, pushing them on their commitment to our life chances agenda, which I see as being central to this Government’s mission. Saturday 2nd July – I held a stand at Thornbury Carnival, I

follow us on Twitter @frome_val_voice

was exhausted, and had large bags underneath my eyes. I spoke to a couple of hundred people about the contest, and the message coming back was pretty unanimous – ‘Please not Michael Gove - it must be Theresa May’. Monday 4th – The first hustings of all 5 candidates was held in a large committee room in the Commons. It was packed, and so hot you could hardly concentrate on what the candidates were saying. I left having learnt nothing and with a large headache. Tuesday 5th July – Voting was taking place. I can’t overemphasise at this point how thick the air felt then. You could not go anywhere without getting stopped, or sit in your office without being phoned. There was a bizarre moment when someone started trying to convert me to support their candidate whilst I was trying to enter a bathroom. Needless to say, it didn’t endear me. Monday 11th July – Theresa May became the new Leader of the Conservative Party in front of over 300 MPs, it was a great moment, a wave of emotion swept around the room at seeing her become our second female Prime Minister. I do not imagine another period like it in my lifetime. I have not been able to do the last few weeks justice, there is simply too much to fit in. You will have to ask me about it sometime, but I am confident that the best person for the job was chosen. Theresa May will be an excellent Prime Minister.

FIGURES showing a higher rate of skin cancer in South Gloucestershire than the average for England has led to warnings to men especially to protect themselves against the sun. Farmers, builders, sportsmen and gardeners in the district are all being targeted in the new Cover Up, Mate campaign due to their prolonged exposure to the sun. Men are a particular focus for the advice because research indicates they are less likely than women to apply sunscreen. The charity Cancer Research UK show that since the late 1970s, skin cancer rates have more than quadrupled in Britain. The increase is greater in men, where rates are six times higher than women, whose rates have tripled. Public Health England said the number of cases of malignant melanoma in the South West

region had gone up from 1,444 cases in 2009 to 1,906 in 2014. There was also a 14.5 per cent rise in mortality from malignant melanoma, from 248 deaths in 2009 to 284 deaths in 2014. But South Gloucestershire had a 27.61 per cent higher rate of the condition than the national average. Caroline Gamlin, NHS England South West medical director, said: “Being outdoors is clearly crucial for farmers, builders, gardeners, Post Office workers and others, as well as for people who take part in a lot of outdoor sport. But simple steps can be taken to lower the risk of skin cancer and be sun safe.” She said sunburn increased the risk of skin cancer, which can develop slowly over time, so although sunburn might feel better in a few days, it may have done long term damage which could be fatal.

Solar farm generates new wildlife habitats as well as energy WILDLIFE friendly habitats are being developed alongside the solar farm at Says Court, near Coalpit Heath. More than 3,000 trees have already been planted on the site, while a barn owl corridor and a wildflower meadow also sit near the energy producing panels. The solar farm was connected to the National Grid two years ago. But when planning

permission was given for the scheme, Westerleigh Parish Council negotiated a community benefit of £19,000 a year for the life of the development, which is estimated to be 25 years. Part of that agreement involved the council working with Avon Wildlife Trust to establish the wildlife habitats over a period of five years, together with an education

programme and wildlife walks. So far there is a wildflower meadow to attract bees and butterflies, while new hedgerows will provide shelter for various creatures. The barn owl corridor is an area of grassland that will require little maintenance once it’s established and which will be inhabited by the small mammals on which owls feed. The trust also said that oak, field maple, small leaved lime and rowan trees were among the thousands of woodland species planted. Bob Taylor, chairman of Westerleigh Parish Council, said: “I look forward to seeing the changes on the site as the new wildlife habitats develop over time.” Meanwhile, schoolchildren have got involved with the site, learning about renewable energy and surveying the area for

wildlife. Other people can enjoy the area by walking a public footpath that creates a circular route around the farm, with plans for a new cycle route to join up with Says Court in the next 18 months. Opponents celebrate after holiday cabin plan for village pond site is withdrawn

A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to put a holiday cabin on the site of a village pond has been withdrawn. Winterbourne Parish Council and a large number of residents had objected to the outline application for a one-bedroom lodge at Beckspool pond, Frenchay, leading to the launch of a campaign to save the feature. Campaigners told South Gloucestershire Council that the pond was one of the area’s natural gems and had been a haven for wildlife for 200 years. They said it was enjoyed by many local people, especially children who liked to feed the ducks. Winterbourne councillors also raised concerns that it could be a way of establishing a development footprint on the land, saying they did not feel development of any kind was appropriate on the site. Meanwhile, a South Gloucestershire conservation officer recommended refusal of the plan, claiming it would introduce “an intrusive and discordant” feature that would result in a significant level of harm to the conservation area in which the area was located. Bob Woodward, president of Frenchay Residents’ Association, said although opponents were pleased at the withdrawal of the application, they would continue to monitor any future proposals for the site. He said: “No thought had been given to the impact on wildlife or the dangers of upsetting the ecology of the pond.” The application had ben put in by Mrs Nasima Begum of Melksham, Wiltshire, with ARC Developments acting as agent. ARC said the holiday let cabin would have been self sufficient, covering the cost of maintenance of the pond.

Support the South Glos Strays family fun day A SOUTH Gloucestershire charity which supports stray dogs in the district is hoping animal lovers will join them for a family fun day later this month. South Glos Strays will host the event, which features a dog show, on Sunday August 21 from 9.45am-4pm at Avon Riding Centre, opposite Blaise Castle car park. It boasts craft and gift stalls, dog-themed stalls, children's games, face painting, a pet drawing competition and much more. There will also be food, cakes and a barbecue. Entry is 50p for adults which includes a programme. Children are free. To find out how to enter the dog show, which includes novelty classes and prizes and rosettes to fifth place, email Julia at fossdogshow@hotmail.co.uk or call her on 0776 8285009 (evenings). You can also visit the charity's website www. southglosstrays.org or Facebook page. South Glos Strays was set up by a local dog warden in 2010 with the aim of creating a network of volunteers to help the stray dogs in South Gloucestershire. The animals are rehomed through rescue centres across the UK.

33 Campaign raises awareness of symptoms that could be linked to lung cancer

HEALTH chiefs in South Gloucestershire are backing a campaign aimed at getting people with a persistent cough or unexplained breathlessness to see their GP. The Be Clear on Cancer respiratory campaign will run until the autumn in a bid to raise awareness of lung cancer, other lung diseases and heart disease. South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said patients who had a cough for at least three weeks or were experiencing breathlessness should not ignore the problems. It said Public Health England wanted to improve the early detection of lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as heart disease and lung cancer, which causes around 28,000 deaths a year in England. Nearly 24,000 people a year are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease and only 15 per

cent of cases are caught early. Dr Alison Wint, the cancer clinical lead at South Gloucestershire CCG, said: “Everyone gets a cough now and then but one that lasts for three weeks or more could be a sign of something more serious, such as COPD. “Getting out of breath can also be a sign of other health problems, such as anaemia or anxiety, or it could be the result of being overweight or physically inactive. “However, sometimes being short of breath can be a sign of something more serious – an illness such as heart or lung disease or other health problems, such as asthma. But diagnosing these conditions early makes them more treatable.” Lung cancer has one of the lowest survival rates of any cancer because more than twothirds of patients are diagnosed at a late stage when curative treatment is not possible.

New league proves a tough test for Frampton AFTER a wet June in which not many results were possible, the sun shone in July meaning many more games were played, although not always that successfully by the Fram, (Sam Coleman reports). Promoted into their highest ever league, the first XI have struggled losing by 9 wickets to both league leaders, Nailsea CC and Bristol YMCA. Taking only one wicket in each match meant that the post game analysis and voting for champagne moment was a pretty short-lived affair. However, close wins were achieved against Winterbourne 2nd XI and Old Down CC. Highlights of the month included 5 wickets in a match for George Foulger, as well as half centuries for Luke Baker, Phil Cordy (77 before being cruelly run out by your correspondent!), Alex Broomsgrove (73) and one of our ginger twins, M.Shermon. The second and third XI’s have also enjoyed a mixed month of cricketing highs and lows. The 2nd’s endured a disappointing loss to Frys CC on an ‘interesting’ wicket that may have finished off their chances of promotion for yet another year. Good wins however came against Old Down with Robin Cater bludgeoning 50* and also against Blagdon CC by just 1 wicket (FVV editor Rich Drew rolling back the years with 3-27). Finally, the 3’s lost a low scoring game to Hallen CC but enjoyed a 4 wicket win versus St Mary Redcliffe in which Ian Mollison starred with 72 runs off the bat.

Fram hosts Bristol Youth With another school year gone, the start of the summer break brought about the inevitable queues on the M5 and of course, the culmination of the Bristol Cricket League cup finals, Sam Coleman writes. Once again, Frampton Cotterell successfully hosted the event, which seems to get bigger and better every year. Both fields at the park were a sea of brightly coloured camping chairs as parents and friends supported their charges in their twenty over

cup matches. Congratulations must go to all of the clubs of the teams who reached the finals day: Bedminster, Carsons and Mangotsfield, Thornbury, Winterbourne and Bristol YMCA. As always, a fine standard of cricket was played and there were many notable individual performances. The winners were: Winterbourne CC Under 11s – Dave McCarthy Cup Carsons and Mangotsfield CC Under 11s - Don Brooks Challenge Trophy Bristol YMCA CC Under 13s – Frank Benner Cup Winterbourne CC Under 17s – Dave Allen Cup Frampton Cotterell provided the bar, bbq and had to work hard on the wickets in changeable weather, with youth coaches and the umpires also making sure the day went smoothly.

Cricket League Finals

fromevalleyvoice follow us on Twitter @frome_val_voice 37 Winterbourne excel at youth finals www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk

WINTERBOURNE Cricket enjoyed a stellar day at the Bristol and District Youth Finals, winning two titles. The club’s Paul Dagger has given us his take on the day. As a club, Winterbourne have enjoyed several youth cup finals over the years, and this season was no exception. Under leaden skies, a small army of WCC supporters made the short journey to Frampton Cotterell to cheer on the boys. First up were the U11s, who were given a stern test by a talented Bedminster team. Batting first, Winterbourne totalled 136-9 from their 20 overs thanks mainly to Adam Nolan (25*) and Jack Studley (29). Bedminster were very composed during their response, but some incredible ground fielding set the foundation for victory. Matt Waters (3-26) and Mason Lingard (3-32) were the chief wicket takers as Bedminster finished on 128-8. Skipper Jack Studley went up with his side to receive the winners’ trophy and the man of the match award to tremendous applause. Bedminster were very gracious in defeat, and were an absolute credit to their club. In the afternoon, the U17s took on a very strong Brislington side, bristling with county players. Bowling first, Winterbourne really put the squeeze on (despite rain interruptions), and restricted Brislington to a total of 70-7. James Labuschagne took 2-17 and Benji Parker 2-12. Quick wickets fell during the run chase until Zak Hamid (17) arrived at the crease and calmed the nerves. But the man of the match performance came from Jonners Peterson, who swept and hit over the top with real aggression to close the game out with an unbeaten 29. His award was well deserved, with skipper Tom Parker running him a close second after a miserly spell of 4-1-5-1. Winterbourne U15s have also reached their cup final, at a date yet to be confirmed. Surely they can’t win as well - can they?

New management team for Frampton Athletic FRAMPTON Athletic will go into the new season with a new managerial line up for both their First and Reserve teams. Adrian Pell has taken the decision to step down from his duties as first team manager in order to focus his time and efforts in running his fitness and nutrition business. This has led to last season’s reserve team managers, Yinka Brownlow and Nick Talbot making the step up to run the First team for the forthcoming season. The club has thanked Adrian for all of his hard work and efforts over the past 4 seasons managing the First team and 3 seasons prior to that managing the Reserves. Adrian will remain as a member of the management committee at the club. The Reserve side will be managed by Oliver Wood and Martyn Tozer. Both Oliver and Martyn have been involved in the club for many years, having joined from Junior football and have been a huge part of the club’s history. The squad have been working

hard during pre-season and are being put through their paces by the club coaches in order to prepare for the upcoming schedule of pre-season friendlies, which will offer all players a chance to impress the managers and get their match fitness and sharpness up to scratch. The current pre-season schedule is as follows:Saturday 6th August – Frampton Athletic vs Whitecroft FC – 2.30pm kick off Saturday 13th August – Frampton Athletic vs Ashton United – 2.30pm kick off Saturday 20th August – Frampton Athletic vs AFC Mangotsfield – 2.30pm kick off Wednesday 24th August – Charfield vs Frampton Athletic – 6.30pm kick off League fixtures have just been released and will start in September, which will see Frampton’s First team open their season with a tough away fixture against Oldland Abbotonians and the Reserves will face an equally tricky home fixture against AEK Boco ‘A’.
