TIPS FOR FRINGEGOERS... 1) Check the Map:

6) Please Note:

Gone With The Fringe has 14 theatre venues and two main outdoor sites, all within easy walking distance. Some are real theatres, but most are converted schools, halls, warehouses, stores and tents. All are clearly marked with Fringe signs.

All 14 theatres and the outdoor sites operate from noon each day until after midnight. Performances are scheduled continually in each space, with approximately one hour between indoor shows. The Master Schedule will tell you what's playing next on the Fringe.

Tickets are limited to two per customer and are sold on a firstcome, first-served basis. A few seats will be reserved at each performance for staff, media and sponsors who have deadlines to meet—this will be strictly controlled this year and your 6 co-operation is appreciated. No ticket costs more than $5—and many are less. All ticket revenues go directly to the artists! .

3) Check the Shows:

7) Remember:

Study the program listings carefully before you begin. The Index lists the general style of the show, but it's wise to check the individual listings for each production (Most of the shows at the Fringe this year are new works). Each show is presented once a day only and always in the same venue. However, many of the shows have split performance schedules so you may be able to catch a show at a different time on another day.

The freedom of performers at the Fringe is utterly unrestrained. Chinook staff and volunteers organize the event, but all productions are created by the artists themselves. You are the final judge of their entertainment value so if you enjoy a show, tell the artists and tell your friends; if you see something you don't like—try again!

2) Check the Schedule:

4) Check the Daily Boards: At each site (83 Avenue and King Edward School Playground) there are Daily Boards next to the Information Tents. On them, each day, will be posted changes, substitutions and the schedule for that site's Street Entertainment. Listings should be available by 10:30 AM.

5) Check the Time: Tickets at the Fringe must be purchased at each theatre. Tickets for the first show at each space will go on sale one hour before performance. Tickets for the next show will go on sale as soon as the previous one goes into performance-and so on, for the rest of the day.

?5

8) And Dorft Forget: There are two outdoor sites this year with all sorts of street entertainers passing the hat; another Old Strathcona Foundation Street Dance on Friday night, August 14th (admission charged); an opening performer's Parade on Saturday morning; the draw for two free SuperPasses after the parade; and a fantastic Finale at Midnight on Sunday, August 23rd..

Confused...? No Need to be! And Here's Why... New this year at the Fringe, you'll see some smiling people walking around with colourful triangles tied on their forearms. These are our Patron Service patrols—and they are there to help you find your way around the Fringe. They'll help organize line-ups at the theatres (and be on the look-out for unwelcome line-jumpers!), point out other shows that are still available, make a good guess when your line-up is tooJong for you to hope to get a ticket, suggest other performances you might enjoy and, generally, point you in the direction of lobbies, washrooms and, for more specific information, our two Info Tents. These are volunteers whose sole job is to help make your day at the Fringe a magical and memorable one, with as few hassles and hard-times as possible.

An important message to all our patronsThere is something miraculous about a festival which involves so large an audience, especially when it is staffed and run almost entirely by volunteers. To help us to make your Fringe experience as pleasant as possible, please note the following... * All shows will begin at the published times. Please be at the theatre on time. Latecomers, even with tickets, cannot be seated after a show begins without the express prior consent of the artists. * We work very hard to make the Fringe as exciting and rewarding as possible, but glitches do occur. Please do not take these out on the volunteers. If it is a small problem, we apologize in advance. If you feel it is a big problem, either ask a volunteer to page one of the managers, or write to us at Chinook. We promise to take you seriously. We all hope that you have as much fun being at the Fringe as we do organizing it! Catherine E. Lowther General Manager CHINOOK THEATRE

Robert Burns, Scotland's most revered poet, lived a life as rich as his poetry. His amorous ways, however, forced a confrontation with the Calvinist church of his day which brought him to trial for the sin of fornication. These trials only served to inspire Burns' most humorous and scathing works. This play is taken from the actual transcript of those trials.

From The Unconscious We'll take suggestions from your unconscious mind & turn those ideas into comedy scenes. No, it's not a new religion, it isn't a scam to cheat the audience & it isn't even the Government trying to pull the wool over your eyes. It's just 45 minutes of comedy improvisation, combining music, sound effects, your suggestions & our-way out minds! We've been improvising around North America for 5 years!

Two ex-prostitutes, one male and one female, share an apartment in Toronto. Over one night, they each struggle with anguished memories and try to come to grips with one another. This Theatre Tozo production opened in Toronto in April and is being presented here by Edmonton's Theatrepublic. The striking prose of this lyrical play will give you a window into a startling subculture.

An absurd, off-centered, eccentric play where time, historic and present, dovetails two worlds: a medieval biblical incident and a contemporary Edmonton shopping mall. Multiple consciousness provides instant communications across spatial distance. Poet Watson plays across temporal distance as well. What's more real than unreality! See it! Believe it!

Come hear the mysteries of the language of the gods unravel before your very cochleae! World-renowned linguistics scholar and sometime shortorder cook, Alice Carpenter, reveals and illuminates the complexities of the mother (sic) tongue that every one in her right mind is violently beating down the doors to learn.
