What is a Fringe? Well, at best it's a n exciting, often irreverent, sometimes outrageous, always e n t e r t a i n i n g c o l l e c t i o n of theatre pieces w h i c h m a y never find t h e i r w a y i n t o "regular" p e r f o r m i n g arts seasons. It's the one place, the one t i m e i n the year w h e n a n audience gets t o choose from a n i n c r e d i b l e c o r n u c o p i a of n e w plays, u n i q u e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s of o l d plays, o r i g i n a l dance, mask, m i m e , m u s i c . . . It's a direct c o n f r o n t a t i o n b e t w e e n artist a n d audience, a n o u t d o o r art gallery, a street festival, a c u l t u r a l c a r n i v a l . . . A Fringe Theatre Event is a celebration of all that is vital a n d alive about the p e r f o r m i n g a r t s . . . W h a t we've d o n e is set u p five i n d o o r stages, a l l w i t h i n easy w a l k i n g distance of each other. Five theatres o f different sizes a n d shapes, each w i t h a different character a n d each w i t h f o u r o r five shows i n t h e m , every day for n i n e days. Each theatre is e q u i p p e d w i t h l i g h t i n g a n d s o u n d e q u i p m e n t a n d resident technicians. T h e shows y o u ' l l see are the artist's o w n c r e a t i o n — a n d the m o n e y y o u p a y to get i n goes d i r e c t l y back to the artists themselves. We've m a d e n o artistic j u d g e m e n t s about any o f the p r o d u c t i o n s — that 's y o u r job!
