WELCOME. .. to t h e first a n n u a l (?) Fringe Theatre Event - n i n e days o f theatrical c o l o u r a n d chaos i n t h e heart o f E d m o n t o n ' s O l d Strathcona district. What is a Fringe? Well, at best it's a n exciting, often irreverent, sometimes outrageous, always e n t e r t a i n i n g c o l l e c t i o n of theatre pieces w h i c h m a y never find t h e i r w a y i n t o "regular" p e r f o r m i n g arts seasons. It's the one place, the one t i m e i n the year w h e n a n audience gets t o choose from a n i n c r e d i b l e c o r n u c o p i a of n e w plays, u n i q u e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s of o l d plays, o r i g i n a l dance, mask, m i m e , m u s i c . . . It's a direct c o n f r o n t a t i o n b e t w e e n artist a n d audience, a n o u t d o o r art gallery, a street festival, a c u l t u r a l c a r n i v a l . . . A Fringe Theatre Event is a celebration of all that is vital a n d alive about the p e r f o r m i n g a r t s . . . W h a t we've d o n e is set u p five i n d o o r stages, a l l w i t h i n easy w a l k i n g distance of each other. Five theatres o f different sizes a n d shapes, each w i t h a different character a n d each w i t h f o u r o r five shows i n t h e m , every day for n i n e days. Each theatre is e q u i p p e d w i t h l i g h t i n g a n d s o u n d e q u i p m e n t a n d resident technicians. T h e shows y o u ' l l see are the artist's o w n c r e a t i o n — a n d the m o n e y y o u p a y to get i n goes d i r e c t l y back to the artists themselves. We've m a d e n o artistic j u d g e m e n t s about any o f the p r o d u c t i o n s — that 's y o u r job! I f y o u like a show, tell y o u r friends, tell anyone o n the s t r e e t . . . i f y o u just sat t h r o u g h a terrible t w o h o u r s , t r y another show! Remember, the p r o d u c t i o n s y o u ' l l e n c o u n t e r o n the Fringe are not all for everyone — some w i l l appeal to y o u , some may a p p a l l y o u . . . So, to enable y o u to start finding y o u r w a y t h r o u g h t h i s nine-day t h e a t r i c a l maze, a f e w s u g g e s t i o n s . . . First, sit d o w n a n d s t u d y this p r o g r a m m e — all the events are listed, w i t h some s c i n t i l l a t i n g a n d seductive d e s c r i p t i o n s of t h e shows p r o v i d e d b y the artists. Decide w h a t y o u w a n t to see, c o n s u l t the master schedule i n the m i d d l e o f the book, fold-out the map, find the theatre a n d . . .that's really all there is to i t . Tickets f o r all shows are s o l d at the d o o r — n o advance sales — b u t y o u m i g h t w a n t t o c o n s i d e r b u y i n g a FringePass. T h e FringePass is available at the Fringe Info Centre (Princess Theatre lobby), costs t w e n t y dollars a n d enables y o u to a t t e n d five shows o f y o u r choice as w e l l as i n c l u d i n g a w i d e variety of d i s c o u n t c o u p o n s from local merchants. A FringePass also gets y o u a n official Fringe b u t t o n — a n d w i t h o u t that y o u w o n ' t be able to get i n t o the Fringe Club (Chickey's Place Lounge) w h i c h is the official watering-hole for weary, hungry, t h i r s t y a n d / o r lively p a r t i c i p a n t s . A n d , for those w h o like freebies, there's the Fringe Park, w i t h bands, gospel singers, puppets, c l o w n s a n d w h o e v e r h a p p e n s a l o n g . . . W h e w ! We m a d e i t — it's taken m a n y m o n t h s o f p l a n n i n g , we've m i x e d SummerFest staff a n d b o a r d m e m b e r s a n d local business people a n d a d m i n i s t r a t o r s a n d technicians a n d literally h u n d r e d s o f visual a n d p e r f o r m i n g artists (and even a p o l i t i c i a n or two) b u t n o w we're ready for the final, essential i n g r e d i e n t — y o u , the audience. It's y o u r s h o w n o w . . . E n j o y it!. Brian Paisley Producer
