In 2012, Fresno State added new scoreboards at two of its athletic venues - Bulldog Diamond and the Student Horse Center. The new scoreboard at the Bulldog Diamond came as a result of a planned gift to the Fresno State softball program from Vonnie Fogard, a long-time season ticket holder and member of the Bulldog Softball Diamond Club. The new Daktronics LED matrix color scoreboard replaces the old matrix board that was first installed when Bulldog Diamond was built in 1996. Meanwhile at the Student Horse Center, the scoreboard is the first to ever be installed at an NCEA (National Collegiate Equestrian Association) Equestrian venue. The project was spearheaded by the Saddle Club, the equestrian team booster club, who raised all funding exclusively through private funds. The electronic scoreboard is a 5’ x 12’ Daktronics LED.

TENNIS CENTER FACTS

16

Beginning in the summer of 2002, the Wathen Tennis Center underwent an expansion that enhanced the look of the facility. In addition to resurfacing all 12 courts and replacing all wind screens, the grass berm and wrought-iron fencing that runs along the east side of the Center was extended to the north end of the courts. This allows spectators to comfortably enjoy viewing on all 12 courts and makes the complex the ideal location for WAC and NCAA Tournaments. Additionally, a generous donation from the Wathen family allowed for the addition of lights during the summer of 2005. The six courts inside the stadium are now surrounded by light towers, making

the facility the perfect home for night matches. The Tennis Center was a result of a $250,000 donation from longtime Fresno State tennis supporter Spalding Wathen, an area homebuilder. The donation turned a good facility into a great one. Not long after receiving Wathen’s donation, three new courts were constructed and six existing courts were resurfaced. A raised earthen berm was constructed alongside the six southernmost courts and an elevated viewing platform consisting of steel reinforced concrete was built between the six main courts. Approximately 400 luxury chair-back seats atop the platform face the complex’s six main courts, making for easy viewing of all six courts while a dual match is in progress. Courts are also equipped with Colorado Time System scoreboards that keep running scores during matches, allowing spectators the opportunity to immediately know the score on every match at the facility. The facility is widely regarded as being unmatched in the San Joaquin Valley for ideal viewing for tennis matches.

’DOGS LOOK TO MAKE MARK IN MOUNTAIN WEST 2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW

As the Bulldogs enter the 2013 spring season, the team will face a mixture of new and old. After nine seasons under Simon Thibodeau, the ’Dogs have a new leader at the helm. Ryan Stotland is in his first season as head coach of the Fresno State women’s tennis team and the eighth head coach in the history of the program.

Under Thibodeau, the Bulldogs won seven WAC championships in nine years with the team finishing as the runner-ups the other two seasons. This experience in championship matches should give head coach Stotland much confidence leading into unknown conference play.

The sophomore class duo of Aishwarya Agrawal and Anne Susdorf are both looking forward to new roles this season. Agrawal played much of her time at the two and three spots last season, but with the departure of last year’s number one, she will likely be asked to step up in the top spot a be a tough point for the ’Dogs. Susdorf, who saw limited playing time last year, is looking to build off a solid fall during which she won the Bulldog Classic on the ’Dogs home courts. Stotland, who was hired in August and didn’t have much time to do fall recruiting, has added three new faces to the roster this January. Rana Sherif Ahmed joins the Bulldogs from Cairo,

ANNE SUSDORF

Egypt where she saw much success in the ITF Qatar Open by winning singles and doubles two years in a row. The other new additions are twin sisters, Anneka and Sophie Watts, hailing from Hitchin, England. These three freshman will not only add new spark to the team but also add depth that will make the ’Dogs a very tough team to beat. As the dual match season comes upon the ’Dogs, the team’s mixture of new and old could be the perfect recipe for winning their first Mountain West Championship.

Stotland was the assistant coach Arizona for the last four seasons where he coached five nationally ranked singles players, four nationally ranked doubles teams, posted a 5537 overall record and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. Another element of new comes in the

form of a new conference: the Mountain West. The ’Dogs, who have dominated the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) over the past nine season, will look to continue their success in conference play this year.

‘DOGS MAKE 12TH WAC CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCE 2011-12 SEASON REVIEW The Fresno State women’s tennis team, led by ninth season head coach Simon Thibodeau finished the 2011-12 season highlighted by an undefeated WAC record, a WAC Runner up title, a 21-4 record, a second-consecutive WAC Player of the Year, a six-time WAC Coach of the Year and five team members honored at the WAC Championships. The team consisting of only one senior, three juniors, two sophomores and two freshman showed that despite injuries and tough competition, the Bulldogs were ready to compete. The Dogs missed their 10th WAC Championship title in 11 seasons by a breath and went undefeated in regular season conference play, going 3-0. Fresno State entered into the ITA rankings pre-season at No. 66, climbed the rankings as high as No. 43 and finished the season ranked 57th. In a busy fall season, the Dogs competed in the Cal Nike Invitational, the ITA Northwest Regional, ASU Invitational and Fresno State’s annual Bulldog Classic. Junior Olga Kirpicheva was named the victor at the Bulldog Classic in both singles and doubles. The ‘Dogs closed the tournament season at the Cal Winter Invite in Berkeley, Calif. Sophomore Marianne Jodoin and senior Laura Pola competed in the ITA All-American Championships in October and defeated UCLA’s Skylar Morton and Carling Seguso, 8-5, and advanced to the round of 16. Jodoin also competed in singles, but fell to No. 31 Brynn Boren of Tennessee.

32

As the spring season approached, head coach Simon Thibodeau added freshman Aishwarya Agrawal (Indore, India) to his lineup which gave the team its first full roster since 2007. Thibodeau held high standards and set his sights high for the ‘Dogs. The ‘Dogs competed against some of the top-ranked teams in the country including No. 49 Sacramento State, No. 34 Saint Mary’s, No. 34 Texas A&M, No. 45 Pepperdine, No. 7 Miami and No. 10 California. There were many exciting moments throughout the season for the ‘Dogs against top-ranked foes. Jodoin went 3-4 against ranked opponents including her defeat of Saint Mary’s 82nd ranked Catherine Isip, 6-3, 6-3. Agrawal rose to the No. 2 spot on the team and then topped Pepperdine’s 123rd ranked Lorraine Granillo, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) and Agrawal and junior Bianca Modoc surprised the Miami team with a 8-6 win over 37th ranked duo Gabriela Meja and Lina Lileikite, which catapulted

The Dogs knocked-off nine non-conference competitors, including an outstanding performance against No. 50 Georgia State, No. 48 UC Davis, No. 69 CSU Northridge, No. 51 Santa Clara, No. 70 UNLV,UCSB, Cal Poly, Florida International and Loyola Marymount. The Bulldogs went undefeated in conference play throughout the regular season, defeating Hawaii, 5-2, Nevada, 6-1, and sweeping New Mexico State, 7-0. These victories gave the Dogs their 3-0 record and the No.2-seeded position for the WAC Championships. The victories continued for the Bulldogs in Las Cruces, N.M. for the WAC Championships. The ‘Dogs swept the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters, 4-0 in the first round of the tournament and advanced to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the team narrowly passed New Mexico State in a 4-3 victory. The Bulldogs and the Aggies battled to last point in the last match. The ‘Dogs took the doubles point from the Aggies with back-to-back wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams. Modoc and Agrawal defeated Jodie Wiliams and Annemieke Witte, 8-1, at No. 2 and juniors Olga Kirpicheva and Melissa McQueen defeated Ginet Pinero and RosPolly Nguyen, 8-5, at No. 3. In singles, the Aggies came back against the `Dogs at No. 6 singles where the Aggies’ Nguyen topped Pola, 6-4, 6-0. Agrawal answered back for the `Dogs beating Denise Van Der Ben, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2. New Mexico State struck again at the No. 3 spot where Pinero defeated Kirpicheva, 7-6 (7), 6-2. At the No. 1 spot, Jodoin bested Manon Sylvain, 6-3, 7-5. The Aggies’ Natalia Salum evened the score at No. 4, defeating McQueen, 6-4, 6-3, sending the deciding point to the No. 5 spot. In a three-set battle, Modoc earned a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Witte to clinch the win and send the `Dogs to the finals for the 12th consecutive year. In the final round, the Bulldogs battled Hawai’i. The ‘Dogs lost the doubles point to Hawai’i in a 2-1 decision. Pola and Jodoin started the match with an 8-5 loss to Hawaii’s Barbara Pinterova and Jamie Pawid at the No. 1 spot. At No. 3 doubles, Kirpicheva and McQueen defeated Martina Kostalova and Aglae Van den Bergh, 8-5, to even the score. However, the `Dogs lost at No. 2 when Modoc and Agrawal suffered a 8-3 defeat to Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa sending the Bulldogs into singles with a

1-0 deficit. In singles, Hawai’i continued to gain momentum as Poljakova topped Agrawal, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot and Pawid defeated Kirpicheva, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 bringing Hawai’i one point away from the sought after WAC title. However, 41st-ranked singles player Jodoin had other plans. She bested Pinterova, 6-2, 6-3, to inject energy back into the Bulldog team. At No.4, McQueen topped Kostalova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Then Modoc came from behind at the No. 5 spot to defeat Suworowa, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, to even the score and send the deciding match to No. 6 singles. Freshman Anne Susdorf started strong for the Bulldogs, taking the first set, 6-4, but Hawaii’s Van den Bergh came from behind to clinch the Hawai’i victory, 7-5, 6-2, ending the ‘Dogs 2011-12 season. It was the Bulldogs’ 12th visit to the WAC finals and only the second Runner-up title within that time despite late season injuries from Kirpicheva and McQueen and sophomore Tanya Murtagh, who did not play in the tournament. The loss also marked the second time in 17 years that Fresno State did not compete in the NCAA Tournament. However, Fresno State was still a winner by many means at the WAC Championships. Jodoin was named WAC Player of the Year for the second-consecutive time, Thibodeau earned his sixth WAC Coach of the Year honor, Jodoin made the WAC All-Tournament team and was named first team All-WAC in singles and second teeam All-WAC in doubles with partner Pola. Agrawal was honored as second team AllWAC for singles and made the All-Tournament team in doubles with partner Modoc, who was also named to the All-Tournament team in singles. Jodoin finished an outstanding sophomore year, where she was awarded WAC Player of the Week six times in the season, WAC Player of the Month in October and reached a highest ITA ranking of 39th in the country, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Singles Championships for a second consecutive year. No. 41 Jodoin took on Washington’s 17th-ranked Denise Dy. In an exciting match, Jodoin gained early leads in the two sets only to fall to the two-time All-American Dy, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Jodoin finished the season ranked 45th in the nation in singles. “We got off to a bit of a slow start,” said head coach Thibodeau. “However, we are still a young team and even though we did not make it to the NCAA Tournament I still think we had the best team we’ve had in three years. I’m proud of everything they accomplished.”

2012

With a proven track record of strong leadership, integrity, sound academic values and athletics achievement, Thomas Boeh enters his 31st year of athletics administration, 18th year as an NCAA Division I-A Director of Athletics and eighth year at Fresno State, including leading the Bulldogs’ transition into the Mountain West Conference. In July of 2005, Boeh was charged to stabilize, reform and revitalize the athletics program at Fresno State. As a result of this charge, the Department of Athletics has been entirely restructured with a new senior administrative team. Special emphasis has been placed upon a consistent and value-based approach to decision-making, as well as clearly delineating areas of responsibilities with built-in accountability. Considerable attention has been directed towards creating a progressive studentathlete environment and strict adherence to welldefined NCAA compliance protocols and standards. New polices have been developed regarding student-athletes recruitment, oversight and welfare. The Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and Substance Abuse Educational and Testing Program have been reviewed and strengthened, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council has been reenergized. Departmental and institutional protocols relative to admissions, financial aid and eligibility have all been restructured in conjunction with campus leaders. Fresno State’s student-athletes have benefited significantly from these measures and, in conjunction with enhanced support services, they have fostered a better-quality experience that is reflected in greatly improved Academic Progress Rates, fewer Code of Conduct violations and extensive community service activity. Additionally, all athletics fundraising activities have been consolidated within the new Bulldog Foundation and philanthropic gifts to Athletics have risen to record levels.

rankings. Since 2005, conference championships and advancement to NCAA Championship competition has been achieved in the sports of women’s basketball, track & field, women’s soccer, baseball, women’s golf, softball and men’s and women’s tennis, with four enjoying a Top-20 national ranking, and baseball capturing the 2008 National Championship. Additionally, Fresno State studentathletes have advanced to post-season competition in the sports of football, men’s basketball and equestrian. The success of Bulldog studentathletes led Fresno State to three Western Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cups in a five-year span (2007-08, 2008-09 & 2011-12). Additionally, Sports Illustrated’s SI.com ranked Fresno State the nation’s 18th most accomplished NCAA Division I athletics program for 2007-08. Prior to his arrival in Fresno in July of 2005, Boeh spent the previous 10 years as the Director of Athletics at Ohio University, where he led the program to exceptional levels in numerous categories and earning numerous conference championships. In 2001, The Sporting News ranked Ohio’s department 32nd among the 115 NCAA I-A institutions, the highest ranking of any non-BCS program. The ranking included evaluations for competitive success, fan support, integrity and equity. Ohio earned an “A” rating in graduation rates and NCAA compliance and posted an eight-year high graduation rate of 73 percent in 2004.

Prior to his tenure at Ohio, Boeh served as Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs at Northwestern University, overseeing areas such as development, marketing, ticket operations, sports publications, media services, game management and broadcast properties. Boeh also led the popular “Expect Victory” campaign, Northwestern’s firstever multimedia marketing effort. Preceding Northwestern, Boeh served the University of Maine as Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Administration and Development. He also spent time in a variety of roles with the Big Ten Television Network, The University of Illinois, and his alma mater, Loras College of Iowa. The Chicago-area native received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education with a minor in History at Loras in 1981, and a Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1988.

Under Boeh’s leadership, Ohio was extremely aggressive in its efforts to achieve gender equity and compliance with Title IX. Three women’s sports programs were initiated during Boeh’s tenure, and in 2004 The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that Ohio ranked second nationally among all NCAA I-A institutions relative to the equity of men’s and women’s sport program expenditures.

Fresno State Athletics has been working closely with a nationally renowned consultant, a broad-based President-appointed ad hoc committee, and the Office of Civil Rights to remedy all past gender equity issues and create at Fresno State a model Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletics program relative to Title IX compliance. One component of this effort is the addition of two new women’s sports; lacrosse and swimming & diving both began competition during the 2008-09 academic year. All athletics facilities have been evaluated and a 10year master plan, inclusive of the “Athletics Mall” and “Student-Athlete Village” has been developed and introduced to the community. Several projects have been completed to date, including a stateof-art aquatics venue, and construction scheduled for another cornerstone project, a sports medicine center.

Additionally, numerous women’s facilities were constructed; sports budgets were restructured and decision-making procedures were reorganized to establish what Boeh refers to as an “authentic gender-neutral environment.” Annual fundraising totals rose more than 500 percent and Ohio Athletics concluded the University’s Bicentennial Capital Campaign by exceeding its $10 million departmental goal.

Fresno State’s competitive level continues to be among the leaders in conference and regional play, and several teams have achieved national

In addition, Boeh served a term as the MidAmerican Conference (MAC) representative to the NCAA Management Council, the NCAA’s

2013

most prestigious governing body for athletics administrators. Boeh also served as the chair of the MAC Athletics Directors’ Group and member of the MAC Executive Council.

Some of the more visible changes on the Ohio campus during Boeh’s tenure were the facilities for student-athlete support services, practice and competition. In all, 44 facilities saw major renovation or new construction and Ohio’s athletics physical plant was recognized as being among the best and most efficient in the Midwest.

He has built with stronger media partnerships and spearheaded the addition of a new videoboard at Bulldog Stadium and creation of environmentally-conscious virtual team guides. Ladwig is also a leader in developing attractive value oriented experiences for fans. A strong advocate of the importance of social media (and extremely active on Twitter @ PaulLadwig), he has also increased the exposure of Fresno State Athletics through the creation of the Bulldog Sports Network, the Bulldog Insider (a weekly television show dedicated solely to coverage of Bulldog Athletics) and finding fresh ways to tell Fresno State stories through new and existing media partnerships. His vision continues to bring fans superior story-telling that incorporate the latest technologies. Collaborating with media rights holder as the department’s liaison to Learfield Sports’ Bulldog Sports Properties, new and additional programming for radio and television were developed. Ladwig led the search for the addition of a living four-legged mascot to the Bulldog family, Victor E. Bulldog. People around the world curious about the Bulldogs will continue to log onto a constantly updating Gobulldogs.com website with expanded content, video and increased participatory site interaction. Fresno State Athletics Communications took the lead nationally in developing a paperless media guide in 2009. Environmental awareness, cost containment, and the ability to provide instant information to the media are several factors in the implementation of this paperless delivery system. With a vast and varied career, Ladwig came to Fresno State after serving as the Assistant Athletics Director for Creative Services at Ohio University. At Ohio University, he was charged with ensuring an effective, consistent and progressive approach from game-day activities to marketing to image enhancement. Ohio saw a record-breaking sellout crowd at Peden Stadium when the Bobcats defeated Pittsburgh on ESPN in their 2005 home opener. Innovative, Ladwig was instrumental in creating the Ohio Sports Network, the refinement of Ohio University’s web presence and the production of programming for public television.
