THE BOLD LIP There’s a reason why a red lip is always in style; it exudes confidence, power, sensuality, and fun. Makeup artist Aaron Wozlowski gives us tips on achieving the perfect red pout.

1

Start by making sure your lips are wellhydrated with lip balm. If there is dry, flaky skin on the lips, gently exfoliate by massaging the skin with a hot, wet cloth, and then moisturize with plenty of lip balm right after.

2 3 4

Instead of applying lipstick right away which would slide off the lip balm, do the rest of your makeup routine while you wait for the moisture to absorb into your lips. Next, line your lips neatly with a pencil that matches your lipstick, or slightly darker. Fill in the rest of your lips lightly with the pencil to prevent getting a line around your lips as your lipstick wears off throughout the day. Layer your lipstick on top of the liner. Lightly blot your lips, and then re-apply the lipstick. Blot one more time, and then re-apply the final layer. Applying and blotting the lipstick multiple times will help your bold lip last longer.

5

Finally, clean up the edges with some makeup remover on a cotton swab, or with a bit of foundation or concealer.

If you’re wondering which shade of red is best for your skin tone, don’t worry about following the rules! As with any makeup, the most important thing is that you like the way it looks, so go ahead and test a few different swatches at the store. If you’re looking for a general guideline, bluer reds are a good place to start if you have a warmer skin tone, whereas orange-reds work well with cool skin tones. Not ready to try a fire-engine red? Warm up with a subtler red by dabbing the colour on your lips and blending it in with your finger. This will give you a softer, stained effect that will still stand out as you build intensity to a bolder lip.

THE BOLD EYE

The smokey eye is a dramatic and sophisticated way to dress up any evening look.

1 2 3

Start by applying eye cream on your lower lids, which will help moisturize and protect the sensitive skin under your eyes. Apply primer on your lids. This will help maximize the staying power of your smokey eye, as well as intensify the colour. Hold off on applying foundation until after you are done with your eye makeup—that way, you won’t need to worry about any loose shadow falling onto your cheeks that you’ll have to remove later.

4 5 6

Dust translucent powder over your lids to get rid of any excess oil. This will prevent your shadows from sticking and will allow you to blend the shades more smoothly. The key to the perfect smoulder is to layer your shadows on top of each other for more depth. Begin with the lightest shade, applying the shadow along your lash line, and then blending upwards. As you add your medium and dark tones, keep applying the shadows starting from the same spot along the lash line.

Like the red lip, there are no rules when it comes to choosing the best hue for your eye colour or skin tone. Play around with different colours and wear what makes you feel beautiful and confident. If you’re not sure where to start, try a colour that contrasts with your eyes and makes them stand out. Plums and greys are great on brown and green eyes, while bronze and chocolate browns look stunning on blue eyes.

S

tarting out with a Saturday afternoon job at Fairweather and working her way up to the renowned style expert she is today, Jeanne Beker remembers her roots and takes nothing for granted. Born to parents that were Holocaust survivors who immigrated from Poland with nothing but the clothes on their backs, she has truly achieved the Canadian dream. With an enviable career that spans three decades, Ms. Beker began as an actress before she moved into hosting television programs including TheNewMusic, CityPulse News and the wildly popular FashionTelevision that ran for 27 years in 140 countries. She’s a contributor to the Globe & Mail and numerous other publications, has authored five books, was editor-in chief of FQ and SIR magazine and remains a style guru who still finds time to make philanthropic work a priority and catch a yoga class. With each incarnation she has brought innovation and dedication and her latest endeavor as Style Editor and host of Style Matters on The Shopping Channel is no exception. Each episode will focus on a theme and bring together interviews with top designers and behind-the-scenes footage, as well as direct accessibility to garments and advice on how to put it all together. It is a culmination of Jeanne’s strengths and experience that she and the network are thrilled to embark on. Amid a hectic schedule, Jeanne was generous enough to talk to Fresh Magazine about how she got her start, the trajectory of her public life and, of course, what’s in her closet. Your parents wrote a memoir ‘Joy Runs Deeper’ about surviving the Holocaust. How do you think they influenced you and your drive to succeed?

Well it really toughens you up, there’s no question. Listening to all their tales of courage and survival made me a survivor. Learning that I don’t have anyone to rely on but myself gave me a great sense of independence. My parents came here with nothing and my father had to work like a dog just to keep a roof over our heads. To see them rise from the ashes was incredibly inspiring and his work ethic definitely rubbed off on me. My dad wasn’t ever crazy about what he did though, so he always stressed that it was important to really love what you do; consequently, I was determined to do a job that I really loved. Did you imagine that job would be in fashion? I actually wanted to be an actress. I thought fashion was a little too superficial. I didn’t consider it a great art form. I knew there were designers and that there was a certain amount of creativity inherent in the scene, but for me, I wanted to be a great actress and I saw fashion as a tool for that – costumes to really express yourself properly. I fell into fahion in the mid-eighties with Fashion Television, but even then it wasn’t about fashion to me. It was about people and reporting on a scene that was exploding and filled with the most colourful characters. It was about storytelling for me, but of course the more I got into it, the more I learned and the more I fell in love with the applied art and craft of it. The machinations of the fashion world became much more interesting to me. Do you remember your first awareness of clothes? I imagine it came long before FT. My mother was a big fashion lover. She used to make all of her own clothes or have dressmakers make them. I fell in love with the glamour of it all. My sister and I loved to play paper dolls and dress up like most young girls. For us, it was what being girls was all about.

Black and White Printed Blazer/ Zoe Jordan / Wardrobe Apparel / Price upon request Black leggings/ BCBG MAX AZRIA/$345

Was FT your first job in the industry?

dislikes you care to share?

Well, I did have a Saturday afternoon job at Fairweather at the Yorkdale Shopping Plaza, if that counts. That was a very glamorous mall in 1968!

I think anything goes. If there’s a look you love, you should embrace it. It’s great to see the waves of 70’s sensibilities coming back; I love the idea of art and fashion being so integrated. I like modernity and clean lines. I like colour but not as much as I love black. I like big, bold accessories. Overall, I’m into clothes that are easy to move through the world in and don’t take us over.

How did you get the Fashion Television job? Was there an audition? No, I didn’t audition. I was an established onair person on City TV doing a show called New Music and doing Much Music. One day I heard rumblings they were starting a fashion video show and I thought, ‘Oooh! That could be a fun change for me’ so I said: “Hey you should let me do this,” and they agreed. I think some people are scared to ask for what they want, but you’ve been a pioneer throughout your career, seemingly unafraid of risk and comfortable pitching new ideas. Where do you think you obtained the confidence to put yourself out there like that time and again? I grew up feeling very loved and I was always encouraged to dream big and to believe in myself. Although my parents had great expectations for me, I never felt pressured. I was encouraged to be an original. Both my parents had a lot of pride in the fact that I stepped out into the world on my own and that I was gutsy from a young age. I think that’s a big problem with a lot of young people today. We live in a very click-and-land society because of what the Internet has done to us. While it allows us to readily access information, it also encourages us to live vicariously and I think that that discourages some people from getting out there on their own to re-imagine their lives. Right, we’re comparing ourselves to other people so much now. Yes, exactly, because we’re exposed to so much. It’s true that ignorance can be bliss. If you don’t really think about what can go wrong or who you have to live up to, it certainly is much easier. Do you have a favorite decade for fashion? I would say the 60’s for me because that’s when I came of age and truly started to make my own wardrobe choices, moving from a girl to a woman. That decade was all about liberation and expressing oneself. There was ethnicity creeping into the clothes with the British invasion and of course Woodstock and the incredible effect that that had on music and fashion simultaneously. We were rebelling against our parents with mini-skirts and long hair; suddenly we weren’t wearing the kinds of things that they wanted us to. It was about peace, love, sexual liberation and being groovy. What about current trends, any likes and

Do you think a person’s style should reflect their age? I think the older we get, the more we get to know ourselves and the more comfortable we are in our own skin. I really applaud people that stop caring what other people think and just dress for themselves and I think that becomes increasingly easier the older you get. I believe in being body appropriate but there are ways of adapting things and people shouldn’t worry about being judged. We should be our own judges. I think too many people are victimized by fashion and it zaps the fun out of it. Look in the mirror and be honest about what you believe you can carry off and what you feel confident strutting. That’s what it’s all about. How did your current role at TSC come about? Initially, I started selling my own line on the channel and it was really fun. It was a great, modern way of selling and talking about fashion. It’s my worlds colliding: I love television and I love fashion and I’ve got a line to sell, so why not do it all in one unique experience on TSC? Then I pitched myself as a curator for them. There is so much being offered that I thought it would be great to help take people through it all and suggest different ways that things could be mixed and worn. For the most part it’s an hour of one particular brand but you don’t get to see how these things could mix and that’s really how fashion works, so that’s how the idea of the show evolved. It’s a style/chat show and we’ve got pieces from the field and interviews and clothes that we can sell. I just love it because it’s a very genuine, down-to-earth and accessible way to talk about fashion with a multiple generations of women that grew up watching me on Fashion Television. FT was a lot of people’s window into that world but Style Matters is a bit more friendly and approachable. It’s been a great joy because there can be a lot of snobbery in the fashion world that can make it intimidating and off-putting. Any up and coming Canadian designers that you are really wowed by? I don’t like to single people out, but there are a lot of great labels out there that I watch like Erin

Kleinberg, Bonfit and Sid Neigum and they’re not up-and-comers anymore, but I am a big fan of Greta Constantine. I was lucky enough to wear one of their outfits for the Fresh shoot. There is certainly no shortage of talent in this country. I just curated the exodus show for Ryerson University and I saw some incredibly talented kids on that runway. The challenge then becomes about getting these people backed and supported and promoted. With so much going on, how do you find balance in a day? Ultimately, I love what I do and it’s so multifaceted that it balances itself out. I get to interview interesting people, I write, I’m emceeing one or two events a week, and I have the show and a variety of special projects that are always exciting, including upcoming involvement with the Toronto Film Festival. When I’m not working I spend time with my 94-year old mom who is such a survivor and an incredible inspiration. I also have close friends that aren’t part of the fashion or media world and a great dog that keeps me grounded. I have some travel coming up that I’m looking forward to and a farmhouse just east of the city that I get to whenever I can. It’s a prism of wonderful things and it all kind of jives together. Can you tell us a bit about your charitable work? I’m very active with Gilda’s Club, which is a cancer support group for people living with cancer and their friends and family. It was started by Gene Wilder who was married to the late Gilda Radner; a dear friend of mine. I do a charity sale for them every year that is a lot of fun. I’m also involved in DareArts, an amazing organization that helps empower at-risk kids through art. I am also on the honorary board of Dress for Success. They are an outstanding organization that empowers women through fashion by getting them back into the work force. I am being honored this coming week by the Israeli Cancer Research Fund and last week I won the DareArts Cultural award. It all gives me a great sense of pride; I am so privileged to have this incredible life. I’ve worked really hard, but I have managed to reap some incredible rewards and to be able to give back is really important. Whether you are successful or not, to be involved in your community will make you feel more successful. All we really have in this world is each other and it’s an important feelgood thing to do.

SKIN-SAVING TIPS

By Amanda Hlatky

S

ummer is the perfect season to put our best face forward. The sun can affect us in many positive ways, including energy, happiness, and our desire to be social (patio season :)! Unfortunately, all this time in the sun can also have some negative effects on our skin health and lead to accelerated aging. The ultimate effect of the sun is degradation of collagen, hyper-pigmentation, loss of elasticity and premature wrinkles. The question is, what can we do to enjoy our summer, whilst keeping our skin youthful and healthy? Adopting these summer skin solutions can allow you to enjoy the sun without being left with long-term damage and unsightly skin changes. Preventative measures are always key in preventing and minimizing unwanted skin changes from sun exposure. Starting with a great skincare routine is key. However, sometimes the damage is done and we need a treatment solution to restore our skin health. SUMMER SKINCARE ROUTINE: 1 Sunblock NOT Sunscreen Your number one defense against sun damage is sunblock. Notice I did not say sunscreen. That is because sunscreen is made up of chemical based sun protectors that have the potential to cause damage to the skin. I advise clients to drop the sunscreen and adopt the sunblock. Sunblock is made of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. A physical sunblock in the 30-40 range provides exceptional protection in even the hottest climates. This is due to the way it protects the skin. Ultimately it leaves a shield on the skin, defending against the UV rays. This is something sunscreen cannot do. Recommended Sunblock: Elta MD UV Physical Broad Spectrum 41. This amazing sun protection is slightly tinted, so no more white mess on the skin, a common complaint with mineral based sunblock. 2 Load Up on Topical Antioxidants Next on the sun defense list is skin healthpromoting antioxidants. Vitamin C is one of

the most powerful antioxidants in skincare. It protects the skin from UV damage, assists in collagen synthesis and can help lighten existing pigmentation. If you are not prone to rosacea or have sensitive skin, L-Ascorbic Acid is the strongest and most effective form. Recommended Vitamin C Product: Bright Lights Potent “C” Powder by Skin Addix mixed with DailyFix Revival Serum by Skin Addix for enhanced antioxidant protection and rejuvenation. TOP 3 SUMMER SKIN CONCERNS AND TREATMENT SOLUTIONS 1 Hyperpigmentation (Pesky Sun Spots) The beginning stages of sun damage can appear as hyperpigmentation in the form of freckles and spots. This condition can progress over the years to cause UV damage at the cellular level, causing dermal pigment that can be resistant to superficial treatments. Solution: Undergoing a series of Forever Young BBL Photo-Facials is your post summer solution to restore the skin to a vibrant, healthy state. It treats the visible pigmentation and broken capillaries that are caused by sun damage. Evidence is beginning to show that aged skin cells begin to act more closely to younger skin cells after regular Forever Young BBL PhotoFacial treatments. When skin cells are responding in a younger manner, your skin can actually prevent skin cancers from occurring moreso than aged, damaged skin. Younger skin cells also produce more collagen and elastin than aged skin cells. 2 Skin Laxity A telltale sign of a long term sun lover is sagging skin. This is a result of collagen and elastin breakdown. Technology has come a long way to help remedy skin laxity. Sciton Skin Tyte is a really effective treatment for jowls and the dreaded “turkey neck” in the earlier stages. It is also a great preventative treatment to prevent laxity. Solution: Skin Tyte is all about firming the skin. It is a great preventative and corrective

18 | FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 11 | Fresh Vancouver Issue 30

18

treatment option to preserve and restore skin laxity and firmness. It is a quick and simple treatment that works by heating up the dermal layer of the skin, home to collagen and elastin. This instructs the elastin to contract and tighten, resulting in tauter skin. It is a safe treatment to have during the summer months and is a great treatment to fight against collagen degradation by the sun. 3 Rough Texture + Fine Lines and Wrinkles We’ve all heard the term ‘leather skin’, a term coined in the 80’s when tanning beds gained popularity. It’s no secret that prolonged sun exposure can leave us with a less desirable skin texture as well as fine lines and wrinkles. Solution: Dermapen is your ally to soften those lines, leaving you with a smoother brighter appearance. This treatment works by creating thousands of tiny micro channels that essentially lead to collagen formation that reduces and softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, it improves the health of the skin, restoring it to a more youthful state. CONCLUSION: So, fret not while you create your summer memories with these skin saving tips. Feed your skin nutrients, protect it with a good sunblock, and wear sunglasses and a hat. Lastly, make an appointment with a trusted SKN practitioner to discuss a skincare plan to keep your skin healthy all year long. Amanda Hlatky is an advanced SKN practitioner and laser technician at SKN Holistic Rejuvenation Clinic in Yaletown. A R T

to WEAR By Roop Dosanjh

fter working with a local designer in Vancouver for 27 years, Marianne Greaves decided to venture out on her own and start her own project, Art to Wear. Her drive and vision all started with wanting to create unique pieces that she struggled to find in retail stores. Marianne understands that women are looking for affordable and original fashion pieces, and that, accompanied by her love of nature, architecture, colour and texture, is what she strives to provide through her beautiful designs. Marianne’s passion lies not only in designing top-quality garments, but also in creating the fabrics. The process includes draping the fabrics, with many of her pieces cut on the bias, ultimately changing the way the clothing drapes on the body. All of the garments are hand-made and hand-dyed using different methods of twisting the fabrics. Currently, Marianne is designing a collection of beautiful tunics and wraps in natural fabrics such as bamboo and linen. Art to Wear is about creating a complete fashion look by incorporating one-of-a-kind jewellery to complement the clothing. The Art to Wear collection also includes Firma Energy Wear, a line of versatile activewear consisting of fashionable tank tops and leggings. Art to Wear’s newest item is a collection of hand-painted silks, which are all original pieces of art. Marianne prides herself on creating local, hand-made and custom designs that are available in an array of desired sizes and colours. Art to Wear is geared towards comfort, livability and everyday wear for the working and traveling woman.

CREATING THE MOOD FOR

THE BEST IN DENTISTRY By Dr Kelvin Mah

I

get so excited at the thought of my patients visiting my dental space for the first time. Don’t get me wrong, my main focus is on the health and maintenance of their smiles, but I’m so proud to show off my work environment because of the mood it brings forth in my patients. It immediately calls forth a calming mindset. I guess you could say that my office is comparable to my smile philosophy: the work you put in is what shines through to the outside. I believe that the physical environments that we put ourselves in say a lot about all of us. At Smile City Square, I’ve designed an area of relaxation and comfort, choosing to focus on the natural beauty of my favourite surroundings and emphasizing them throughout the space. I wanted to create the right mood and have it be apparent to anyone who walked through the door. There’s a serenity that comes with the professionalism and services that my patients can expect from choosing my practice over others. This space has allowed me to connect with me, and I feel like my vision emanates from every corner, which is exactly what I was looking for.

that this is a modern facility with modern services that will suit any of your needs. My dental space is filled with soothing, natural tones, bringing forth a serene awareness. Working with SSDG Interiors, my clinic won an IDIBC Award of Excellence for its design. I’ve emphasized the beauty of my office with the addition of bamboo, exposed beams, and natural lighting throughout. I want my patients to know that I’ve invested in my space much like they’ve invested in me; it goes hand-in-hand. My dental space is a reflection of the care and expertise they can expect at every visit. After all, I’m interested in enriching lives, one smile at a time.

Much like I sit down with my patients and listen to their smile desires, prior to designing my office space, I imagined all of my options to achieve optimal layout, composition, and harmony. And you know what? The answers my patients gave me about their smile desires and the look I envisioned for my office ended up being the same thing: natural beauty.

It’s safe to say that the dental experience at Smile City Square is greatly dependent on the atmosphere that I’ve created for my patients. A Japanese Torii Gate welcomes new patients at our reception area. Mobile art installations hang above each dental chair and they gently twirl, which gives an airy feel to the space (which has 40 foot ceilings!) and induces a calming mood while patients are being treated. The point is, I don’t want my patients to feel rushed while they’re in the dental chair, I want them to know that this is a dental space where we take the time to ensure your wellness is being taken care of appropriately. After all, wellness is so much more than clinical health; it’s an overall improvement that affects every aspect of our lives.

I’ve tried very hard to differentiate my dental space from most dental clinics for a simple reason: most offices are clinical. At Smile City Square, you’re instantly calmed and welcomed to a place where you can unwind while receiving treatment. At the same time, you realize

I had the desire to induce a peaceful mindset for all who enter, knowing that they’ve come to the right place. Not only does my office generate this feeling of serenity and enjoyment, it also accentuates the thought that has gone into the practice. We happily provide advanced ser-

vices for invigorating and enriching your life for the future. At Smile City Square, no detail has been left unnoticed, right through to the uniqueness you feel at first glance. As my design team, SSDG Interiors, so eloquently said, “Kelvin Mah decided he was going to change his current and future patients’ perspectives on their next appointment. And change it, he has.” My lifestyle consists of relishing in the natural beauty around me on a daily basis. I always try to notice the little details that make all the difference in our world and I think this mentality plays a big role in my personal, overall wellness. I know I’ve said it before, but it’s funny how your oral health can affect your overall wellness, and I’d say that mine definitely does. I take care of my oral health and the oral health of my patients, with joy and patience, and I know that that carries over. It’s a true connection. I’ve also formed a personal connection with my dental space, much like I form a personal connection with every patient that I have the pleasure of treating. I’ve created my dental space hoping that you can form a connection with me, too, and realize that my artisan craft is what is important to me. I take pleasure in the fact that I can welcome patients into Smile City Square, knowing that it’s a reflection of my lifestyle and approach to dentistry. In fact, one of the best compliments I received upon revealing my new office was from a long time patient who said, “this space just feels like you and what you’re about!” For me, it’s all about a natural well-being that can be translated to each of the people I see on a daily basis. I know that I’ve created the ideal mood for delivering the finest dental services to all of my patients.

THE ANCIENT HEALING PRACTICE OF

THALASSOTHERAPY By Sherina Jamal and Rod Mullholand

I

love this famous quote: “We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came…” – John F. Kennedy. It is a reminder of the connection we have to the ocean both on a spiritual and physical level. Over 10 years ago when I was researching natural skincare solutions and developing my next skincare line, I met local environmentalists and certified harvesters of wild Pacific seaweed. Through them and my own detailed research over the years, I learned about the amazing therapeutic properties and benefits that came not only from the seaweed, but also from other ocean elements including sea salts and intertidal Canadian glacial clay. During this research process, I came to understand more about the ancient healing practice of thalassotherapy that dates back at least 10,000 years, practiced first by ancient Egyptians. This made me very passionate about incorporating our local ocean elements in ways that would benefit not only the skin, but also the internal system. WHAT IS THALASSOTHERAPY? Thalassa comes from the Greek Word meaning sea. It involves the use of ocean elements including whole raw seaweeds, ocean water and ocean minerals on the body, allowing absorption of important vitamins and minerals in a chelated form, for the purpose of achieving mind, body balancing. From the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and the Romans, the ocean has been recognized for its healing properties and utilized by cultures situated near the ocean as long as we’ve recorded history. In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, thalassotherapy was experienced by the royal families, the rich and famous in both England and France. WHAT CAN THALASSOTHERAPY DO FOR YOU? Exposure to stress and environmental toxins can create deficiencies of nutrients and minerals. This can lead to issues such as premature aging, inflammation, chronic pain, and skin concerns such as eczema, acne and others. Ocean elements including seaweed can help by infusing minerals, vitamins

and other components, thereby restoring internal balance, supporting the body’s immune system and improving skin health. The benefits of thalassotherapy can be experienced through time spent in the ocean or bath. It can also be experienced through full body spa treatments that incorporate authentic ocean elements. In a spa treatment, seaweed, the intertidal clay and sea salts help to increase circulation, which opens pores and leads to the deep penetration of these active minerals. “The use of regular thalassotherapy treatments can benefit the body right away and after time can significantly increase the immunity to disease and longevity”. FOR THOSE OF US LOOKING FOR ONE OF THE BEST ANTI-AGING SECRETS Kelp contains every essential amino acid the body requires, plus a multitude of others. It converts these essential amino acids into proteins like collagen and elastin to help reduce the visible symptoms of aging. Seaweed, when used for skincare, can also help to hydrate, brighten, reduce redness and puffiness. To incorporate thalassotherapy into your daily life, here’s my advice: Eat more seaweed, cut back on processed salt and incorporate high quality sea salts into your diet, spend time in the ocean, soak in a seaweed or salt bath 2-3 times per week, and experience a true thalassotherapy spa treatment whenever you can! Sherina Jamal is owner of Ancient Secrets Inc., a natural skincare educator and developer of the Beauty Through Balance Spa Line. sherina@beautythroughbalance.ca www.beautythroughbalance.ca Co-author Rod Mullholand is a certified thalassotherapist practicing in Vancouver BC. SUPER LOCAL!

HOME-GROWN FOODS THAT PACK A NUTRITIONAL PUNCH By Connie Pretula

S

uperfoods are certainly getting their fair share of attention lately. It seems a new nutrient-packed food with health-boosting attributes tops the favourites list every other week. It’s wonderful we are learning about the healing benefits of food, but there can be a downside when the new fad food is from a far-off land. Unfortunately, some of these imported superfoods have caused great stress on the countries where they are grown. Local people who have used them for centuries as a staple in their diet, in some cases, can no longer afford them because of sudden demand in other parts of the world. Also, there can be negative effects on the local environment. The good news: we produce an excellent variety of superfoods right here in Canada. FROM THE PRAIRIES A few superfoods grown on the Canadian Prairies are flax, hemp, and buckwheat. All are excellent sources of high quality protein. Flax is an excellent source of Omega 3 oil, an essential fatty acid we all need as part of a healthy diet. Buckwheat is a rich source of flavonoids which help extend the antioxidant properties of vitamin C. Hemp is a perfect balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 oil. They can be a great grain alternative for people with gluten sensitivities if they are from a gluten-free source.

FROM THE GARDEN OR MARKET Superfoods that are easy to grow locally include asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, beets, carrots, garlic, onions, parsley, cilantro, apples, blueberries and cherries… just to name a few. Our Canadian superfoods are high in vitamins A, C, E, K, a range of B vitamins and minerals like magnesium, manganese, selenium, potassium, zinc – and this is only a partial list. The green vegetables also provide us with chlorophyll which is a beneficial phytochemical to assist our bodies with the natural detoxification process. All are excellent sources of fibre and most of us can use more fibre. I hope you feel inspired to revisit Canadian superfoods. Go ahead and explore our beautiful backyard, which has so much to offer in the way of healing foods. As always, please respect the land and ensure you leave it as beautiful as when you found it (or better!). Check out my website for delicious recipes using home-grown ingredients….

FROM YOUR BACKYARD If your lawn is free of dandelions, you are missing out on a great detoxifying food! Dandelion root helps support liver function, can improve blood sugar control, and is used as a diuretic.

Burdock is another little gem. Growing up on our farm in Manitoba, I remember my father on a vendetta to destroy all of the burdock. He considered it a noxious weed because of the burrs that covered our pants when we walked on our land. Our dog and horse did not appreciate the burrs either. Little did we know though, burdock has liver-and gallbladder-restoring qualities. It can also help to relieve gout and menopause symptoms.
