Transformational Skin Rejuvenation:

Merging the Worlds of Holistic Skincare and Injectables By Amanda Beisel

8

| fresh Vancouver Issue 16

I

njectables like BotoxTM have become big business. Millions of men and women are using Botox to obtain and maintain a youthful appearance. When performed by a well-trained doctor, Botox is very effective at targeting fine lines and wrinkles. Botox can be a great component of a skin rejuvenation program, but if you want long-term results, you must focus on the entire face and adopt a skin rejuvenation program that can provide positive, lasting change. A holistic skincare program does just that, by working at a deeper level to promote long-term results rather than a quick fix. Holistic skincare looks at the face as a whole rather than its individual parts. It takes into consideration the skin tone, texture, firmness, elasticity, and overall vibrancy and health of the skin. It follows the philosophy of providing the skin with what it needs to function through topical nutrition antioxidants, amino acids, key cell nourishing ingredients and effective skincare treatments. By acting at a deeper level, it works to not only address the visible signs of aging, but to prevent new signs of aging from appearing. An effective holistic skincare plan is scientifically proven to create positive, profound change without sacrificing the skin. Adopting a holistic skincare program in conjunction with your Botox treatments will provide incredible, long-term results and healthy, vibrant, long-living skin.

Transform Your Skin with Medical Skin Needling

Medical skin needling is the ultimate skin rejuvenation treatment. Medical skin needling uses very fine, surgical steel needles to create micro-channels in the skin, releasing growth factors that promote natural, scarless healing and the deposition of normal, woven collagen rather than scar collagen. It improves skin texture, tone and firmness while slowing down the thinning of the skin. It is great for face, neck, chest and hands. This treatment is very similar to Fraxel, except there is no potential destruction of melanocytes, growth factors or abnormal collagen. Medical skin needling is the safe and effective alternative because it does not compromise the health of the skin. Medical skin needling can be the perfect partner to Botox. While Botox is used to target specific lines and wrinkles, medical skin nee-

dling addresses the aging concerns of the entire face, improving overall skin texture, tone, firmness and boosting skin health. Performing medical skin needling post-Botox can extend the life of your Botox injections. The results are not seen overnight and can take three to twelve months for full effect. Medical skin needling is proven to effectively address the following skin concerns: • Wrinkles and thin skin • Hyperpigmentation • Rosacea • Premature aging • Acne scars • Epidermal density and strength • UV damaged skin

The Evolution of the Peel: The Vitamin A Infusion Peel

Vitamin A is a powerhouse antioxidant and the results are amplified when used in conjunction with other essential antioxidants and amino acids. Vitamin A promotes collagen regeneration, remodels scar tissue, increases skin firmness and elasticity, improves the texture of photodamaged skin, reduces fine wrinkles, and helps with hyperpigmentation. Lastly, it is one of the most important ingredients in the treatment of acne because it regulates sebaceous gland activity. Applying vitamin A topically in the evening provides a diverse list of benefits. The Vitamin A Infusion Peel is a unique and effective treatment that provides the skin with a high dose of concentrated vitamin A, pushing your skin into regeneration mode. The Vitamin A Infusion Peel is customized to your skin’s needs with the addition of potent antioxidants and amino acids that aid in repairing and remodeling your skin. Results are a healthier, more youthful complexion, with the following benefits: • Reduced fine lines • Improved skin tone and elasticity • Normalized oil production • Thickened dermis without trauma • Calmed acne and rosacea symptoms • Lifted hyperpigmentation

Topical Cell Nutrition: Hydrated and Nourished Skin is Healthy Skin

The skin is an amazing organ that can repair it-

9

| fresh Vancouver Issue 16

self; however, its ability to recover slows down as we age. The skin undergoes oxidative stress on a daily basis as free radicals penetrate skin cells, breaking down collagen and impacting your DNA. The daily use of sun block, topical antioxidants, amino acids, and lipids is essential in supporting, protecting and hydrating the skin while reversing the effects of aging skin. One common skincare myth is that you should only use one skincare line and not mix and match. This is simply not true. Your skin is an organ and requires specific ingredients to function and promote skin regeneration and healing. The ingredients are the most important things, not the brand. When the skin is depleted of hydration, it loses elasticity, plumpness, and lustre and is more susceptible to lines and wrinkles. The most effective hydration method is what I call “the three layers of hydration system.” This system provides hydration to all levels of the skin, providing all the essential lipids, GAGs and nutrients the skin requires to be supple, soft and glowing.

Best of Both Worlds: Holistic Skincare and Botox

The ultimate goal in any skin rejuvenation program should be to obtain great, long-term results without sacrificing the health of your skin. Bringing together the world of aesthetic medicine and holistic skincare has huge potential to transform the skin on every level, bringing both immediate visible change and healthy longlasting results. Healthy skin is long-living skin.

The Cleopatra

Lift By Dr Sachit Shah

A

ccording to world-renowned scholars, Queen Cleopatra VII was one of the most beautiful and powerful women that ever lived. Her legendary beauty moved nations and her allure was felt by some of the most powerful men in her time. Cleopatra was also a scientist and used many beauty remedies to keep her skin glowing and fresh, from her legendary milk baths to wrinkle treatments made with beeswax, maringa oil and cyprus grass. Cleopatra was said to possess the “Golden Ratio,” a combination of facial measurements that evoke the most attraction and positive emotion from a human being. It is roughly defined as a face that is one and half times as long as it is wide (1 : 1.618 to be exact). This isn’t that impressive on its own, until you realize that this ratio is the key to everything from encrypting computer data to the numbers of spirals on a sunflower head, our own limbs and why the Mona Lisa is so pleasing to the eye.

10

| fresh vancouver Issue 11

Other measurements are taken, but the Golden Ratio is the foundation used by many cosmetic physicians to enhance, correct and restore your facial beauty to its most appealing without giving your face an unbalanced or unnatural look. The Cleopatra Lift is a combination effect of Xeomin Cosmetic and Radiesse to restore your natural features with a natural collagen lift. Xeomin Cosmetic is the latest generation Botulinium Toxin type A treatment. Botox was the first of these types of products. Xeomin differs from Botox in one key area: it is free from the complexing proteins, hence its nickname “naked Botox” or “pure Botox.” Xeomin is equally effective in reducing and relaxing wrinkles. Comparing Botox to Xeomin is like comparing Coke to Pepsi. The taste is a personal preference, but the fact remains they are both colas that are very similar. Xeomin is used in exactly the same way as traditional Botox treatments, making it easy for physicians to treat patients as the duration, dosing and so on are all very familiar to them already if they have been using Botox. The recent availability of volumizing fillers has provided cosmetic physicians with the tools necessary to contour facial features non-surgically and cost-effectively. In addition to Xeomin, physicians also use a filler such as Radiesse to add back lost volume to facial features. As we age, we lose our natural collagen, resulting in less volume and elasticity in our faces and making us appear older and more tired – even though we may not feel that way. Radiesse volumizing filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to slow the signs of aging due to the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise the product. What is unique about Radiesse is that the filler itself provides a scaffold under the skin, a structure that stimulates your own collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effects of Radiesse. Stimulating your own natural collagen to grow gives you a very natural lift over time that lasts a year or longer, long after the calcium microspheres have disappeared. The Cleopatra Lift, a combination of Xeomin and Radiesse treatments, provides patients with the ultimate liquid facelift without surgery, a long-lasting treatment that combines the best of both of these procedures with minimal downtime.

Dr Sachit Shah is a physician with special interest in cosmetic medicine. He has a Diploma in Dermatology and has a large cosmetic clinic in Surrey, BC, with more than 20 medical esthetic devices to help you age the way you want to. Dr Shah has been practicing in cosmetic medicine for over 12 years and has been a trainer for Radiesse. www.bclaserandskincare.com

Resolve

to Treat Yourself Well in 2013 By Sarah Hughes

W

hat are you doing to take better care of yourself in 2013? Have you made the same old resolutions you make every year – revolving around unattainable diet, exercise and appearance goals? What about resolving to take better care of yourself? Women today face a barrage of responsibilities – work, kids, partners, cooking, household chores, aging parents, and the list goes on.... When was the last time you took an hour for yourself? When was the last time you took an entire day? A recent survey by skincare goliath Avon surveyed 20,000 women in 22 countries to find out just how well we women are taking care of our ourselves. When asked the question, “what do I do just for me?” the majority of women (42 percent) cited shopping as their favourite “me time” activity. Other indulgences included having their hair done, eating out and buying makeup. However, our willingness to indulge ourselves falls off as we get older. Women ages 15 to 24 take care of themselves far more frequently than their older counterparts, with 61 percent indulging in “me-time” activities at least once a week. Perhaps, in 2013, what we should really focus on is taking care of ourselves. That might mean diet and exercise. It might mean shopping or getting your hair done. It might even mean eating chocolate, or having a glass of wine in the tub. Whatever it is that you choose to indulge in during your “me-time,” the focus should be on taking time for yourself. If you’re going for a power walk, for example, enjoy the walk rather than focussing on what it’s doing for your glutes. Make “me-time” a priority – and make it something that happens on a regular basis. Dr Amy Przeworski, PhD, emphasizes the importance of taking “me-days” in Psychology Today. “We know that self-care is essential for people,” writes Przeworski, “and that chronic stress can contribute to health problems, anxiety, depression, and substance use.” Dr Przeworski provides the following tips to help us take better care of ourselves this year:

• Schedule me-days. Our schedules are packed with responsibilities and activities for others. Without scheduling time for ourselves, we will continuously wait for a time when things are less hectic or when we have achieved all of our goals. That time may never come. So plan a me-day ahead of time and put it in your schedule. Drop the kids off at a trusted family member’s home and take some time to do whatever you want to. • Give yourself permission. You can take a me-day but be so consumed by guilt during the day that you are unable to enjoy it. Instead, use what is known about self-care to fight the guilt that you feel about taking time for yourself. We are more productive, patient, and calm when we have allowed ourselves time to rest and unwind so taking a me-day benefits everyone. • Turn off your computer and only take phone calls that are emergencies. In this day where email is just a click away and you are accessible to everyone 24 hours a day, it is difficult to find a way to be entirely independent of others’ demands. A me-day should be demand-free, so disconnect from these technologies. • Schedule a little me-time every day; whether it’s an hour or a half-hour. This will keep you refreshed between your me-days. However, this should not be a substitute for a me-day. Taking time for yourself should not be considered a luxury; it should be a necessity. When we are relaxed and rejuvenated, we are happier, calmer and more productive. We are better parents, partners and people. Make 2013 the year you resolve to take care of yourself first, and everyone and everything else second. Portions of this article excerpted from the Psychology Today website: www. psychologytoday.com

Ask the Expert

Dr Jason K. Rivers, MD, FRCPC, FA AD

Q: I am considering having some anti-aging treatments this year, but I’m not sure where to start. I want to take off a few years but keep it looking natural. How do I improve my look without appearing overdone? A: That is an excellent and important question to address. Many peo-

ple will jump into an anti-aging procedure based on a friend’s recommendation without considering whether it’s the best treatment for their particular needs and skin. We recommend consulting a skin expert, such as a cosmetic dermatologist, as your first step. A dermatologist will look at your skin in a holistic manner, as an indicator of your general health. He or she will assess any skin damage and review how the aging process is progressing. From there, you will be provided with a skincare plan to not only correct the signs of aging but also to protect your skin from future damage. Your plan may involve only one treatment with a home skincare regimen or combination therapy over several months – either way, it will be customized to suit your skin’s particular rejuvenation needs, and to keep you looking fresh, age appropriate and natural. Working with a skin expert and developing a comprehensive skincare plan – rather than addressing issues bit by bit – is often more cost efficient and delivers better results in the long run.

Dr. Jason Rivers is considered one of Vancouver’s top dermatologists with over 25 years of experience in the field. A clinical professor of dermatology at UBC, Dr. Rivers is the founder of Riversol skincare and the owner of Pacific Dermaesthetics centre for dermatology and laser medicine. www.vancouverskin.com

Dr Lydia Waterson Q: Is Botox for me? A: BOTOX® botulinum toxin type A has been used for over 20 years for the effective treatment of many medical conditions. It’s been approved for medical use in Canada and more than 75 countries for 20 different medical applications. BOTOX® Cosmetic has become the most popular physician-administered cosmetic treatment in North America, receiving a 97 percent satisfaction rating among users. Approximately 5.4 million Botox procedures were performed last year in North America alone! This is an indication of how safe injecting Botox® is. Side effects and complications can occur and Botox® must be injected by doctors or qualified practitioners with specific skills, adequate training and experience to ensure safe, optimal results. It is advised that your treatment be done by a medical professional in a clinical setting, as it is a medical procedure and there is always the remote possibility of a side effect that needs to be handled in a medical setting. Botox® is an effective anti-aging preventative treatment that acts as a muscle relaxant with effects that last for several months. The FDA approved Botox® as a temporary treatment for frown lines and other facial wrinkles such as crow’s feet and forehead furrows, where it temporarily relaxes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles. Botox® treats chronic, persistent migraines, persistent muscle spasms in the eyelid, face, neck, shoulders and excessive sweating of armpits and hands. After three to six months, the effects fade. To maintain treatment, you will need follow-up injections every few months. Internationally accredited since 1986, Dr. Waterson MD has trained and practiced in Ireland, England, South Africa and Canada. She is now practicing at Lonsdale Medical Clinic and The Coliseum MediSpa.

Expert Tips for Thinning Brows & Lashes By Shannon Mann

B

rows and lashes are so important to frame the most beautiful and expressive feature of our faces: our eyes. By learning a few quick tricks, you too can master the perfect brow and lashes to frame your peepers. First, let’s start with a step-by-step demonstration on how to create the perfect brows.

Creating the Perfect Eyebrow

First, you will need a brow filler powder. You can usually find these in a palette that includes a darker shade and a lighter shade. If you are a blonde or redhead, you will need colours that are a beige/light brown combo. If you are a brunette, you will need a palette with a light ash brown and dark bark-coloured brown. Our favourite brand is the “Anastasia” brow filler available at Sephora.com. You will also need a flat-edge, short-bristle angle brush. Use the darker colour to fill in areas with less hair on the brow to create the illusion of fullness. Use the lighter colour to give your brow more shape where you already have hair on your brow but you would like more definition. You want to avoid creating very dark, heavy brows that are obviously drawn in. The purpose of the brow powder is to shade in the brows. Your brow should start directly above your tear duct (A), which should also be the thickest part of your eyebrow. Your brow should continue to narrow on an upward angle, and the highest point should reach directly above the edge of your iris (B). Many people wonder where the eyebrow should end (C). The question can be answered by holding a pen from the corner of your nose and aligning the pen along the outer corner of your eye. Follow the pen up your temple to find the point where your eyebrow should generally end. The illustration included here will help you create the perfect brows to frame your face.

How to Have Long, Full Lashes

When finishing your makeup, nothing completes your look like long, beautiful lashes. There are a few ways to create the illusion of heavier,

16

darker, fuller lashes. The quickest way to achieve this illusion is by “tightlining” your upper inner water line along your lashes with dark eye pencil after you have curled your lashes and applied mascara to them. This will make the upper lash line appear darker and close in any visible gaps between your lashes. The next method is something we do with most of our clients: we use false lashes that are glued along the lash line in order to enhance a client’s eyes. First choose a lash that complements the eye shape and suits the occasion (i.e., lighter lashes for older clients; denser, longer lashes for bridal clients). Our favourite brand, Red Cherry lashes, makes light, flexible lashes from human hair. Always trim the lashes so they fit along the lash line. If they are too long, they will be irritating and peel up through the evening. Once the lashes are adhered with lash glue (Duo brand is our favourite, available at MAC Cosmetics) and the glue has dried completely, use a lash curler to curl your real lashes with the false lashes at the base of your lashes. Then coat the natural and false lashes together at the base of the lashes with black mascara. These lashes will last the evening! Lastly, for those of us looking for a more permanent answer to longer lashes, there is LATISSE, a prescription medication used on your lashes to grow longer, fuller, darker lashes. It promises to double your lash fullness in 16 weeks. A one-month supply costs about $100 to $120, so the 16-week course will set you back over $400. There are possible side effects from this medication, so do discuss this product with your doctor if you are interested!

Dr Anita Fofie Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about a socalled “Botox in a bottle.” Are these creams for real or is this just a lot of hype? A: Good news! There is some data to the support the notion that nee-

dle-free Botox™ alternatives do work. There are new topical anti-aging peptides that are getting some very exciting results for fine lines. Botox™ has been used successfully for 25 years to soften the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines. However, BotoxTM can be on the expensive side, and some people may be averse to receiving injections. The new topical alternatives to Botox™ claim to block the communication between facial muscles and the nerves that tell these muscles to contract. Argireline® is probably the Botox™ alternative with the most evidence to date supporting its use in anti-wrinkle serums. Argireline®, a hexapeptide, claims to result in relaxed facial muscle activity by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that is responsible for facial muscle activity. Studies looking at Argireline® have demonstrated a reduction in wrinkle depth of up to 60 percent after one month of use. Look for anti-aging formulations with at least 10 percent Argireline® for optimal reduction of fine lines. The results you will see with these creams and serums are far less dramatic than any injectable can promise, and they take a little longer to appear. But I am happy to report that “Botox in a bottle” is more than just hype; it’s good science! Q: I am thinking about getting some Botox and fillers, but I’m concerned about the reactions I might get from friends and family. For example, what do I tell my husband? A: A number of patients have expressed similar concerns to me over the years, but there are two answers to this question that may put your mind at ease. First, injectable treatments today are subtle and controlled, and the results are more natural than ever before. You will look refreshed, relaxed, younger and better, but still just like you. Nobody needs to know the details of your personal choices. They might simply think you’ve been on vacation, or learned to meditate! Second, attitudes toward aesthetic treatments have changed dramatically in the last decade. A new study by the FACE institute, a group of Canada’s leading aesthetic physicians, surveyed more than 800 women across Canada. The survey showed that 57 percent of women are now receiving injectable treatments, and 81 percent believe that these treatments are more mainstream than ever before. Multiple studies show that women who address areas they are unhappy with (such as facial wrinkles) experience higher self-esteem. This growing acceptance of aesthetic procedures is making any associated taboo a thing of the past. As for what to tell your husband, that’s up to you! You might start the conversation by stating that cosmetic procedures today are common, accepted, safe and subtle, and have the ability to make you feel happier about yourself. Aging, Osteoporosis and Supplements By Dr Lydia Waterson M.D.

A

s we age, we become increasingly prone to osteoporosis, a disease that makes our bones thin and brittle. As many as half of all women over age 50 will break a bone due to a minor fall or trauma. Women at higher risk of osteoporosis are those of Caucasian or Asian descent, those who smoke or have smoked in the past, women with early menopause, women who have more than three drinks per day, and women with a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture. A bone density scan is the definitive test for osteoporosis and will decide whether you need preventative treatment or not. We can prevent or reduce fracture risk by ensuring we get enough calcium, vitamin D and protein daily. Doing regular weight-bearing exercise also reduces the risks of falls and fractures by helping improve agility, strength, posture and balance.

Getting Enough of the Sunshine Vitamin

How much supplementation do we need? Most of us living in BC need to take supplements to get enough. There is very little vitamin D in our food. It is found in fish, cod liver oil, eggs (a little) and added to milk in Canada; however, we would have to drink 10 glasses of milk a day to get adequate vitamin D. Although the body makes vitamin D during sun exposure, being in the sun for more than 15 minutes can be

18

| fresh Vancouver Issue 16

harmful to the skin. In our sun-starved environment, getting vitamin D from supplements rather than the sun is a blessing in disguise. We are all aware of the potential harmful effects of the sun on our skin. Daily exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer. I see skin cancers and early skin cancer spots daily in my older patients. This is completely preventable! Prevention, sun block and regular screenings by your doctor can prevent skin cancer from spreading and detect early melanoma.

Adequate Calcium is Key

Adequate calcium throughout your life is important, too. Adults under age 50 need 1,000 mg of elemental calcium a day. Adults over age 50, or women who have gone through menopause before age 50, need up to 1,200 mg of calcium per day. Take your calcium in divided dosages and take it with food to help your body absorb it better. Caution: do not take calcium with antibiotics or with iron supplements. With proper supplementation and some dietary vigilance, you can help ward off the dangers of osteoporosis.

A Thinner New You in the Dr Cynthia Kwong

New Year By Dr Cynthia Kwong

I

s losing weight your New Year’s resolution for 2013? If you are a seasoned dieter of commercialized diet plans and weight loss supplements, only to find that the battle of the bulge is an endless cycle of losing weight and gaining it all back, then the answer for all your failed weight loss attempts may lie in your DNA. The foods we eat and the level of physical activity we’re engaged in represent the two most significant life-long environmental impacts on human health. Nutrigenomics, a revolutionary scientific field that looks at the connection between nutrition and genes, is among the new-

est science-based platforms to promote health and lose weight. Effective weight loss strategies become increasingly important in today’s obesigenic society, because being overweight or obese places you at higher risk of developing serious medical conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Together, these medical conditions are the second leading cause of preventable death.

Evidence of Nutrigenomics

Nutrigenomics has delivered evidence of the principle that humans are different with respect

20

| fresh Vancouver Issue 16

to optimal diets. This explains why a low-fat diet may work well for some, while a low-carb or balanced diet works better for others. As nutrigenomics builds the scientific foundation for this, and as genotyping technologies become readily accessible, people may gain value through information on their personal genetic make-up. A now famous study conducted at Stanford University looked at the long-term effects of weight loss using a few different diets assigned at random. Results showed that some participants lost weight on one type of diet, such as low-fat, while others did not. The study then tested participants’ DNA for three specific

gene variations and found that those using a diet best suited to their DNA lost as much as 2.5 times more weight than those not using their best DNA diet.

DNA-Matched Diet and Exercise

So, how do you know what your best DNAmatched diet and exercises are to achieve your New Year’s weight-loss goals? Do a DNA test. The DNA test involves swabbing the inside of your cheek to collect DNA. Scientists at a laboratory then look for single nucleotide polymorphisms, or variations, in four different genes relevant to your metabolism. The test cost ranges between $150 and $200. The genes tested have been validated as significant modifiers of body weight and responsiveness to diet and exercise. The genes were selected from the Obesity Gene Map Database based on a comprehensive review of existing scientific literature. The genetic test panel evaluated for five variations in four genes. These gene variations can affect fat absorption, fat cell formation, fat mobilization for energy, and fat breakdown. Test results provide dietary (low fat, low carb or balanced) and physical activity level implications unique to your genetic make-up. According to Registered Dietitian Keri Glassman, there are physical, clinical, and also symptomatic measures that point to one of three DNA diets.

The Three DNA Diets

Whether using DNA testing or other measures to determine the diet that is right for your specific metabolism, one of the following three DNA diets will be your key to sustainable weight loss. 1. Low-Fat Diet: The low-fat diet may be best for your DNA if you have a family history of heart disease, low energy levels and high LDL cholesterol. Portion breakdown: 70 percent carbs, 15 percent protein, 15 percent fat. 2. Low-Carb Diet: The low-carb diet may be best for your DNA if you have weight around your midsection, high blood pressure and high triglycerides. Portion breakdown: 30 percent carbs, 40 percent fat, 30 percent protein. 3. Balanced Diet: May be best for your DNA if you have a family history of diabetes or heart disease, Mediterranean ethnicity, frequent indigestion or constipation. Portion breakdown: 50 percent carbs, 30 percent fat, 20 percent protein.

Bottom Line

DNA testing takes the guesswork out of food selection and exercise strategies for losing weight by properly matching diet and exercise to your personal genetic make-up. However, genetic testing is no one-stop solution for weight management, because losing weight is

much more complex than knowing about gene variations. Living in an obesogenic society, one must first adopt a healthy lifestyle that consists of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, optimize your detoxification systems to rid yourself of toxins that contribute to weight gain, and ensure sufficient quality sleep before investing in a genetic test. For more information on DNA testing for weight management, and how it may help you in your New Year’s weight loss goals, enlist the professional guidance of a naturopathic doctor. Your naturopathic doctor will educate you on the principles of healthy living and detoxification; identify and address any serious underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to your weight gain; provide medical super-

vision and monitor your weight loss progress, which may include a digital body composition analysis; and provide nutritional recommendations that fit within your DNA diet.

F

ashion correspondent for CTV’s eTalk, weekly fashion feature writer for the Vancouver Province, weekly fashion personality on City TV’s Breakfast Television: suffice it to say, Susie Wall knows a thing or two about fashion and style. She’s hob-knobbed with every celebrity under the sun, on red carpets across the globe, at the ultra-chic Paris Fashion Week, and anywhere her talent takes her. Yet Susie Wall is all about keeping it relatable, despite her glamorous life and polished appearance. She has two (well dressed) kids, a husband, a dog – a normal family life. She loves to ski and play tennis. She pairs bright Joe Fresh nail polish with sophisticated ensembles. And she wants to help real women put together great wardrobes for the real world – which means our beloved, sometimes overly casual, often too rainy Vancouver. Apparently, we can pull it off. Susie Wall spoke with Fresh Vancouver about her star-studded career and her best fashion tips, including plenty of style advice for the rain-sodden, real women of Vancouver.

Vancouver’s Fashion Scene

“I love it when some of the most talented artists in the world live here and stay here, like Hajnalka Mandula, who in my opinion is one of the most innovative designers Vancouver will ever see. I think Vancouver has its own message. Obviously we lean to the casual, but the real taste-makers in this city fuse laid-back and chic without looking pretentious or too junior. For me, it’s always about looking appropriate. Wearing a parka to a cocktail party doesn’t fly, but the converse is that people who criticize our lack of style haven’t necessarily tried to pull it together for their day at 6 am, taking care of kids, schlepping groceries, trying to look fantastic, all amidst our fourth straight week of pouring rain. Fashion is much easier in the sun – we all know that. You see these really glamorous vignettes in glossy magazines and think, that’s great, but how am I going to make that work with a bare leg and an open-toe wedge

Stars & Studs of eTalk

“I’ve been with CTV’s eTalk since the show started in 2000, reporting primarily on fashion and style. I’ve covered red carpets, premieres and fashion weeks. I love the one-on-one interaction with stars on the red carpet. I love the challenge. You’ve got 30 seconds to make this person your best friend, and sometimes the wind blows your way and sometimes it backfires like crazy! For me, it’s always a huge adventure with amazing experiences along the way. I’ll never get tired of talking to guys like George Clooney, who smells like fresh laundry, by the way. The true A-list movie stars treat everybody the same – guys like Clooney and Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. When the cameras aren’t rolling, they’re just fantastic. I’ve also interviewed some really inspiring women along the way. Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Reese Witherspoon are just what you’d expect: smart, shockingly gorgeous, the whole package.”

Fashion for Breakfast

“My Breakfast Television segments are for Chatelaine Magazine, which fits really well with what I’m doing these days – trends, gift ideas, entertaining. It’s really all about injecting style into the everyday. I love shooting local, live television with amazing hosts, like Riaz Meghji and Jody Vance. It’s a great connection to the city and a great way to bring my experiences home.”

The Susie Wall Philosophy “I’ve always said that people cannot humanely edit fashion dos and don’ts unless they’ve committed crimes themselves. I try not to judge too much. I’m here for positive feedback and direction and I try to keep it realistic and forward-moving. So let’s not look back at all of your mistakes, but instead try to tow you out of your rut, whatever it might be.”

quickly. The speed at which we’re able to produce things at a fraction of the cost has changed the industry so much. And lastly, social media has allowed for fashion sense to be a part of this really important artistic global community, to connect with total strangers over self-expression and the belief that style is a reflection of the modern age. And it allows us to be along for the ride, for a change, instead of watching things happen from the sidelines.”

The Perils of Online Shopping

“Online shopping is a slippery slope! It’s easy, but it’s also dangerous. And while it can be a great way to ensure you’re not dressing like everybody right next door, you might go to great lengths to find something online and then see it in a local shop. I really encourage people to support Vancouver emporiums – let’s get out and explore neighbourhoods like Gastown and South Granville and Main Street – the calibre and creativity are there, so let’s get behind them.”

shoe like she’s wearing? Well, I’m not. So, invest in a fantastic trench, a hat that dresses up well and booties that will withstand the elements. Just say to yourself, I’m glad I live in such a cool part of the world. Every city has its downside, and we all know ours.”

“Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll never look as young again as you do right now.” The State of Style Today

“Style today is much more democratic than it used to be. We’re not all trying to look like the same person anymore. Plus, the world of knock-offs has created a trickle-down effect from runway to real-way. It’s made things more attainable for the everyday woman, and

A black cashmere turtle or crew-neck sweater. Beautiful boots, whether they’re equestrian or motorcycle or Victorian. Perfect denim that looks amazing on you. A cross-platform carry-all that you can dress up or down. In Vancouver, a strong arsenal of coats. This is a coat city! A gorgeous over-sized scarf, for sure. A perfect cocktail dress that can work across seasons. A chic top that goes with denim or dressy. The oft-forgotten nude heel. A sexy pencil skirt. A hair stylist you trust with your life!

Those Unreachable Stars

“We’re so inundated with movie stars who have teams of experts navigating their images that there’s a feeling of unrelatability. They are totally out of reach to us. I think it’s best when women understand what their best features are and celebrate them. Take a look at street style in Paris: the hair’s almost messy; she’s got a subtle matte or stained lip, a little mascara and not much else. She’s wearing a wool coat, a giant scarf, carrying a leather satchel and wearing distressed flat shoes. To me that’s beautiful. Paris street style. Never too little; always just right.”

Counteracting Casual

“I think overall we are definitely more casual. I love a return to glamour and I love an excuse to get dressed up, but no one wants to arrive at an event to find that nobody else read the invi-

tation the same way. Yet who doesn’t want to be the best dressed woman in the room? I’m all for casual and chic but I’m also for celebrating fashion and celebrating how beautiful we can all look when we take an extra few minutes to get ready. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Dressing For Your Body

“I always tell people to be realistic about your body type, but also not to be too tough on yourself. You’ll never look as young again as you do right now. When my friends and I are away together, we clink glasses, look at each other and say we’ll never be this young together again. Let’s celebrate it! My grandfather was British and he was such a man of style, with his Burberry trench coat and tartan scarf, and he would say that life is to be enjoyed as well as endured. That’s the way I look at it. Be realistic and surround yourself with people whose advice you trust. Dress in an age-appropriate way and also a body-appropriate way. Go easy on yourself.”

Putting Your Personal Twist on Style

“It’s a process and I think it’s a really tough one for a lot of people who don’t work in the industry. I have friends who achieve incredible things personally and professionally every day, but they are exhausted by the thought of finding the right heels for their new dress. Try to shake it up a little. Take out your laces and replace them with ribbon. Rock a chunky cocktail ring with your jeans. Mix and match out of your comfort zone and you’ll feel like your wardrobe size has doubled overnight.”

What’s Hiding in the Back of Your Closet?

“I always say that even if something is out of style or out of date, if it’s a beautiful design and it’s well made, hang onto it. I won’t tell you that if you haven’t worn it in a year, you should get rid of it. I can name 30 things that I have either donated or consigned over the years that I miss like crazy. There’s always a new twist on an old classic, especially if you have access to a great seamstress. I wore a pair of boots to take my kids to school today that I bought in New York in 1991. Are they super on-trend? Doesn’t matter.”

vintage typography outside my kids’ rooms that says the exact same thing. In fashion, there are a lot of personalities; no question, there can be drama. But look at people who subscribe to the right mantra in the industry – guys like [Club Monaco and Joe Fresh creator] Joe Mimran. He’s a visionary, he’s kind to everyone and he deserves every ounce of his success. I’m inspired by Canadians like that who have done well on the world stage. And I’m even inspired by the interns I work with, who are so creative, so cool with their fashion and so tapped-in to what’s happening. They’re every bit as inspirational to me as the icons.”

Awaiting Spring

“Transitioning from winter to spring is never easy. We’re sort of creeping out of our houses, taking off our layers once the sun comes out. Trends that I’m noticing for spring include railway stripes and baggy Bermudas. There are some weird things like mid-section peek-aboo shirts and talk of the knee-high gladiator sandal coming back – maybe not at my house! Full skirts; I love the sheer panel skirt. Nineties nostalgia, a lot of white, and I think mint green is going to be big. But it all comes back to incorporating what’s realistic into your life. I’m all for investing in a special statement piece, but always work with what your budget will allow. And again, for transitioning, it’s all about coats. Invest in lighter jackets that will transition you across the threshold from winter to spring. At the same time, I’m a bit of a contrarian because I also love a pretty skirt with bare legs and a turtleneck. I love the idea of motorcycle boots and slouchy denim with a tee-shirt and a scarf. I love mix and match, high versus low and, most of all, just being interesting.” Follow Susie Wall on Twitter: @SusieWallStyle

Favourite Fashion Figures

“I’ve had a huge amount of access to such interesting figures throughout my career, but I’m most inspired by the real women in my life. Above all, I would say my late, great Auntie Mame influenced me the most. She had a morning wardrobe and an afternoon wardrobe. She always had a perfect pedicure. Her clothes were tailored to a tee, and she had these lovely long fingers that were always stacked with gorgeous rings. I adored her. “A few months ago, Rachel Zoe looked at me and said, you know it’s actually pretty easy: just work hard and be nice to people. And I thought that was so ironic because I have a

Secrets of Oprah’s Makeup Artist

DERRICK RUTLEDGE By Liberty Craig

T

he list of famous women whose faces he has blessed with his gift is long. It includes Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and Mo’Nique, and it culminates with the two most powerful, most recognizable women in America: Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama. Derrick Rutledge is arguably the most sought-after makeup artist in America. At 50, you might say he’s made it. He’s risen far beyond his humble

and landed on two feet squarely in the First Lady’s private quarters, or, depending on the day, Oprah Winfrey’s dressing room. Rumour has it that he earns up to $15,000 a day for his work. That’s not a typo. But this soft-spoken gentleman is far from the diva one might expect in his role. Derrick’s gentle nature, his innate understanding of people, and his ability to keep a secret are paramount to his success. Of course, his skill with a makeup brush ain’t bad, either. “He makes every day your prettiest day, and every woman is looking for her prettiest day,” Oprah Winfrey told the Washington Post. For Oprah, there’s only one small drawback: “The First Lady comes first. When she doesn’t need him, I get second dibs.” Fresh Vancouver was thrilled to chat with the fabulous Derrick Rutledge, to get an inside look at his relationships with these amazing women and his world-class makeup secrets.

Fresh Vancouver (FV): Let’s start by talking Derrick Rutledge, Wynona Judd beginnings and fulfilled the American dream of exceeding everyone’s expectations. He’s overcome adversity, lost most of the 600 pounds that restricted both his health and his career,

about how on Earth you came to be Oprah Winfrey’s official makeup artist!

Derrick: I was doing makeup for Michelle

Obama, and Oprah saw the June 2009 Time Magazine cover with the First Lady. At Time Magazine, they don’t like to do touch-ups; they

want people to look exactly like they actually look. It was such a close-up of the First Lady and everyone saw how she had been transformed. Oprah said that it was absolutely beautiful – she loved the eyebrows; she loved how clean it looked, how it was very defined and polished. Oprah thought, whoever is doing the First Lady’s makeup, I’d love to have them do my makeup. She brought me to New York and auditioned me, and after that she started pulling me in to do her makeup for more and more events. Then, she told the First Lady that she wanted to share. Michelle Obama would always have first dibs, but Oprah wanted me to give her that same beauty.

FV: Ever since you came into the picture, Oprah looks more gorgeous than ever. Can you let us in on some of your key secrets? Derrick: I appreciate that – thank you so

much. I didn’t think people would notice anything, but you’re not the only person who has been telling me that. It’s all due to a makeup line that I’ve been working on for the past eight years that I will be rolling out very soon, called Ooh. Because it’s mineral-based, it looks very natural and doesn’t look like you’re wearing a lot of makeup, yet it gives good coverage.

FV: Oprah is naturally beautiful and has amaz-

ing skin, but she has an enormously stressful life and must show signs of fatigue from time to time. How do you make women’s skin look so radiant when they’re struggling with stress and lack of sleep?

Derrick: It’s about having good products and good application. One thing about my clients is that because they have such stressful lives and such long hours of work, they do show signs of stress. But as long as you have a good concealer and good foundation, you can camouflage those signs of stress and no one will ever know.

Derrick Rutledge, CeCe Winan I have one of the best concealers, and one thing I like about it is the fact that it’s waterproof. So you can perspire, cry, be on stage, roll around... it’s not going to run! The key is to find a foundation that closely matches your skin tone. The mistake that most women make is finding a colour that matches their arm. Your body is always a little darker than your face. Find at least two different shades of foundation. One should be a little darker than the other, because your skin gets a little darker in the summer months and lighter in the winter months. Blend them when you need to. You need two good foundations to achieve the look you’re trying to achieve. You also need a concealer that has a bit of yellow in it, because yellow makes the skin look healthier. A concealer with a yellow base is great for all skin types to camouflage the bluish-grey under your eyes.

FV: Both Oprah and Michelle Obama have gorgeous eyes. What’s the best way to bring out these beautiful features?

Derrick: Start out with a good brow. I approach each face like a picture frame, and the eyebrows are the top of the picture frame. They should be identical twins, not kissing cousins. For many people, one side of the face can be different from the other side, so you want to make sure the brows are even. Good mascara and a good liner will bring the eyes out. From there, coordinate the colour of eye shadow to what the person is wearing and whether it’s a day look or an evening look. I use eye shadows ranging from blues to greens to purples to browns, depending on the event. For a day look, I use more natural colours and for evening, more sultry and jewel-toned colours.

FV: You are known for having not only the magic makeup touch, but a unique ability to personally connect with your clients. Where does this talent come from? Derrick: It’s been with me all my life. I love people, and my love of people comes through my personality, my touch and my presence. People can feel me as well as I can feel them. I can feel if they’ve had a stressful day and they need a hug or someone to listen to a problem. I’m always that shoulder they can lay their head on. They can also be assured that it stays with me; it doesn’t go anywhere else. That’s why I’ve been able to remain in this business as long as I have, working with high-profile people: they’ve never had anybody come back to them saying they’ve heard any of their secrets or personal information revealed. FV: People around the world would jump at the opportunity to spend just five minutes with Oprah Winfrey or Michelle Obama. After all that time in your makeup chair, what kind of relationship do you have with these highly respected and adored women? Derrick: One thing about Oprah is that she is

a wonderful teacher. Just like I can feel people, she can feel people as well. She can feel when you’re going through something and you need a

because they didn’t want to book two or three seats on the plane, or they thought I would have a heart attack or just wouldn’t be physically able. It’s a continuous journey because from carrying the weight for so long, I’d done a lot of damage to my bones, which is something I’m working on now. I would never let those issues stop me from doing my job. I don’t want my clients to think I can’t do it, so I push through the pain. I lost the weight because I wanted to be healthier, because I’m in the beauty industry, and because I wanted to live longer. And let’s be honest again: I plan on taking the Ooh Lifestyle System to places unknown and I want to be able to show people that my products instill health both on the body and in the body. I have to be a product of what I’m selling.

FV: Tell us more about the Ooh Lifestyle System... Derrick: I’m rolling out the hair product line first in Canada, which will be followed by my skincare line, then my makeup products. When I first started out in this industry, I was doing makeup and hair because you have to be able to do both in order to get the job. At some point, I had to choose which direction I wanted to go. But I never forgot about hair care, and I also realized that hair is an extension of the skin. Healthy hair; healthy skin. Anything that goes on your hair goes into your system and comes out on your face. I look at the hair just like I look at the skin, so the products have similar bases. The hair care products are organic and also contain glycolic acid, which helps to cleanse the hair and prepare it for the nutrients in the styling products that nourish the hair. FV: Your life has transformed even more dra-

matically than the faces you transform so beautifully. What is life like for you now?

Derrick Rutledge, Yolanda Adams shoulder to lean on. Oprah is like a sister. She is a wonderful personality, and a good role model as far as hard work, determination and dedication. The First Lady is also a role model. She is a mother first, who takes good care of her children and instills family values. She is also dedicated to helping other people, which is why she ran her campaign to help with childhood obesity. She knew that I came from that situation and encouraged me to continue on my road. Same thing with Oprah.

Derrick: People tell me, I want to be like you, I want to do what you do. What they don’t understand is that when I came to this profession, I wasn’t trying to work for famous people. I did it because I love what I do. I love makeup, I love hearing women say how much they love the way they look, and the joy I see on their faces when the makeup is done. But I never get caught up in “me.” That’s the important thing. I never put me in the picture; it’s always the other person. And because of that, big doors have been opening up for me.

FV: Can you tell us more about your personal struggles with obesity?

Derrick: We have to be honest: I work in a pro-

fession where people base your worth on your looks. I work in the beauty business. Once I lost the weight, I started hearing from people that they hadn’t wanted to hire me for certain jobs

The Power of Oprah: Vancouver Professionals Touched By Oprah By Liberty Craig

or any business or artist in the world, to be blessed by the power of Oprah’s recognition is to find success. Consider the example of Oprah’s Book Club, which for ten years put obscure writers on the map and made many of them very wealthy indeed – her most popular picks hit the two and even three million mark in book sales. For reference, a best-seller in Canada is defined by 5,000 sales. People across North America and beyond have experienced the power of Oprah when the most influential media personality in America called attention to them, whether with an invitation to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show, inclusion on one of her “favourite things” lists, or as one of the shows featured on her relatively new television network, OWN. Fresh Vancouver spoke with various Vancouver businesses, artists and individuals who have had their lives and work touched by the magical power of Oprah.

Oprah’s face?” remarks Sandi. “It’s incredible! When we’re working with the media, as soon as they hear who Derrick works with, we get a call back within half an hour. I’ve never seen anything like it!” “Oprah will tell it like it is,” she continues. “If she likes or doesn’t like a product, she’ll tell Derrick. I feel like we’re getting our products reviewed by her directly. I’m a single mom with kids 15 and 18, and I really believe in giving back. Oprah and Derrick are also about giving back. They were both raised by single mothers and grandmothers. We are designing Ooh Lifestyle seminars that will be the first in Canada to support young women ages 14 to 18, providing inspiration, celebration, motivation and mentorship about being a woman. It’s part of why I wanted to participate in this company – it’s everything I believe in.” “I always purchase O Magazine and have admired Derrick’s work on each amazing cover. I think Oprah looks better now than she ever has, for he captures her personal beauty and really brings out her best features. She looks fresh, alive and beautiful.” “It’s a dream come true for me to work with a fantastic line, following Oprah and spreading the word internationally.” Contact Sandi at sandi_lesueur@oohlifestyle.ca.

Sandi Lesueur is a sales and marketing professional who has helped multiple major skincare and makeup brands achieve true success. When an opportunity arose for her to become involved with Ooh Lifestyle, the new line being launched by Oprah’s superstar makeup artist Derrick Rutledge, she jumped at it. The “naturalceutical” beauty products are made with a philosophy that combines colour, texture, organic elements and pharmacological processes to be eco-friendly and designed to promote the beauty, health and well-being of the body. The line includes hair care, skincare and makeup products, and will roll out in Canada in that order. Sandi is an international business developer for the line. She has already established professional distributors in BC, the prairies, and other provinces across Canada, including Kingdom Beauty, which is based in Vancouver. You may know them as the erstwhile “Shopping Bags.” Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic have been through a few incarnations of their “try before you buy” show concept. In one of the more recent manifestations, Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag, the discerning duo tackle recipe books. end of the episode. Below, Anna and Kristina comment on what it was like to have the show picked up by Oprah’s OWN network. “Being a part of the launch of Oprah’s new network, as well as the first Canadian show that OWN US picked up, was definitely a coup for us and our company, Worldwide Bag Media Inc. It added to the cachet of our program, Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag, and we believe it resulted in more international sales for us worldwide. We also received a lot of high-profile and valuable media coverage, including mentions in the New York Times and the New Yorker. Overall, it felt like we received Oprah’s much coveted endorsement. We are all about breaking the rules and creating your own path, and it meant a lot to us that this meshed well with Oprah’s mantra of living your best life.” Luisa Marshall, Tina Turner Tribute Artist www.luisamarshall.com Pic courtesy of Daddy Cools Entertainment

Tina Turner impersonator Luisa Marshall has been singing and dancing as a Tina Turner tribute artist for many years with performances all over the world, including benefit shows for AIDS Vancouver, Third World Eye Care, United Way and Loving Spoonful. But, as she relates below, her appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show mark the defining moments in her life and career. “Oprah has greatly influenced my business because she is the biggest fan of the legendary Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner. I had a rare opportunity to be invited on her show twice when Ms Turner appeared to announce her comeback after several years of retirement. The first invitation was strictly as myself, and the second was for me to appear as Tina Turner. Being invited on stage to sing “Proud Mary” before a full house at Caesar’s Palace Colosseum in front of Oprah, Tina Turner and Cher was such a big accomplishment in my career as a Tina Turner tribute artist. I obtained a lot of fans all over the world and I was invited to fly to Amsterdam for a personal appearance for the prominent producers in Europe. There were many requests for newspaper, TV and radio interviews. That experience took my business as an artist to a higher level that I never expected. It meant the world to me! Oprah has influenced me in so many ways. I am totally grateful that she empowered my life not only as an artist but as a person.”

Nimisha Mukerji is an award-winning director whose debut feature, 65_ RedRoses, received critical acclaim and went on to be officially selected for Oprah Winfrey’s Documentary Club on OWN USA. Mukerji has described Oprah’s influence on her career as a “game changer.” Below, she shares her thoughts on Oprah’s powerful effect on her life and work. “Oprah has been a source of inspiration for many girls and women around the world, and I was no exception. I grew up watching her on television, and at a time when there weren’t many women hosting their own shows, Oprah made me believe that anything was possible. When my documentary 65_RedRoses was chosen to have its US premiere on Oprah’s Documentary Club, I had a chance to attend the launch event at Sundance with my producing partner Philip Lyall. In the middle of the party, Oprah herself arrived, and for the first time in my life I was completely star struck. The entire room was overtaken by her energy. She epitomizes professionalism, confidence and class. While it was total chaos around us, with everyone vying for her attention, she locked eyes with all the filmmakers and gave us her undivided attention. I think that’s a part of the magic of Oprah: she immediately connects with people and is an incredible listener. Her support of 65_RedRoses gave us a huge platform to spread awareness about organ donation, a cause close to my heart. I learned a lot from Oprah in that brief encounter at Sundance, and am truly grateful to have felt the power of O.” Dr Joti Samra, Host, Million Dollar Neighbourhood www.drjotisamra.com Photography: Vairdy Photography Wardrobe: Malene Grotrian Design Jewellery: LOLO Jewellery & Accessories Hair: Jessica Viel, Hype Hair Studio Make-up: Nadia Albano Style Inc.

She is a frequent media commentator and presents her work extensively at the invitation of organizations across Canada and the United States. Currently, Dr Samra is also the co-host of OWN’s Million Dollar Neighborhood – the show that helps a whole neighborhood at a time adjust their financial realities to improve their collective net worth by a million dollars in just 10 short weeks. “Money is one of the greatest sources of stress and relationship problems,” Dr Samra commented to Fresh. “Managing your finances is also emotional – there is a huge psychology to spending behaviours.” Season 2 of Million Dollar Neighborhood premieres on OWN on January 6, 2013. “I’ve always seen Oprah as a mentor,” said Dr Samra. “ She has done so much to put psychology issues on the table. I always say she needs to be given an honorary PhD in psychology! Oprah helps people tell their stories – the same as a psychologist. She has been a pioneer in bringing issues of sexual abuse, domestic violence and mental health to the forefront. I have a huge amount of respect for her as a very powerful black woman working in this industry – all the boundaries she’s pushed. It has been a real honour to get to the point in my career where I was approached to host a show on her network. The value and brand she represents is so amazing: feel good, do good, give back to community. And that’s what our show is all about.”

wo passionate, lifelong Oprah fans met during a 300-person “ultimate Oprah fan” trip to Australia. They struck up a friendship based on their common interest: Oprah Winfrey. It turned out they were both from Canada. Fast forward a little over two years to find the fruits of Liz Toole’s and Nada Smith’s friendship: an unofficial Canadian fan club that enthusiastically supports the OWN network in Canada—and all things Oprah. Through their website (canadasownviewers. com) plus Twitter and Facebook, Liz and Nada have reached out to fans across the country. “C’mon fellow Canadian OWN Viewers,” they write on their website, “let’s help grow OWN together… eh?” Fresh Vancouver caught up with Liz and Nada in time for Oprah’s Canadian tour to talk about why we love Oprah so very much.

Fresh Vancouver (FV): How did you come to form Canada’s OWN

Viewers?

supporters of Oprah and we wanted to spread the word about what’s happening on OWN. We blog, we tweet, we interact, we inspire and support.

FV: Do you define yourself as a “fan club”? Nada: We are much more than Oprah fans. The OWN Ambassadors

group has moved us all to want to be better than we already are... to push ourselves a little more to be a brighter force in the world, and whether we get together online or in person, the energy is there to change the world.

Liz: It really has turned into so much more. Friendships have been made, we have supported charities, we have completed random acts of kindness – all in the name of Oprah. It’s about friendships, encouragement, support and learning.

Nada: When Oprah began her OWN Network she asked for viewers to help increase the ratings. Liz Toole and I created Canada’s Own Viewers to raise awareness of Oprah’s new network. We also wanted to create a place for people to connect through programming. We are now a part of a larger group of people who are called OWN Ambassadors. This group is made up of OWN viewers from around the world including Canada, the US, Australia and the Netherlands. OWN has been a catalyst and the umbrella for OWN Ambassadors to find each other and move to a greater space. The programming and social media have brought us together and reminded us of lessons that may help us find what it means to live our best lives.

Nada: Oprah has been one of the best teachers I have ever had. I grew up watching Oprah and have learned so many valuable lessons from her and the Oprah Winfrey Show. She inspires me to be a better person and to always live my best life. And this is really cool: Oprah actually follows me on Twitter and we tweet one another quite often. Sometimes it’s about her network and programming, but sometimes it’s about life. She’s amazingly open and tweets a lot. If you’re not following her on Twitter, you should!

Liz: When Oprah finished the Oprah Winfrey Show and announced she was starting OWN, I truly wanted to support her. After all, she had been supporting women like me for over 25 years. I believed in her vision and I wanted to spread the word to Canadians that there were meaningful, inspiring television shows on OWN. Canadians have always been huge

Liz: Oprah has been a great teacher in my life. She has taught me to dream. She has taught me that anything is possible. She has taught me that there are no limits in this world. I have the greatest respect for Oprah. She is a hard-working woman who is blazing trails and making a huge contribution to humanity. She is making a difference in this world.

FV: What does Oprah mean to you personally?

Many of us invited Oprah Winfrey into our homes every afternoon, year after year. We got to know her, and in some way developed our own relationships with her. And we were most certainly touched, influenced, and moved by her. For some Vancouver women, these Oprahinspired “aha” moments were downright life-changing. “Like so many kids of working parents, I spent my late teens and early university years coming home to an empty house and Oprah in the late afternoons. Years before it would have occurred to me to seek out selfhelp information of any sort, here was this woman bringing it into our home. I credit her show with empowering me to turn around some of the more dysfunctional relationships in my life at a young age, as well as opening my eyes to the power of forgiveness. Truly, I believe many more 30- and 40-somethings were raised with Oprah’s influence than might admit it, just because she was in the home at a time when parents were not.” Jennifer B. “For me, the biggest lesson I learned from Oprah is that nothing is insurmountable. No problem is so big and so difficult to get over that we should allow it to ruin the rest of our lives. Through the many inspiring guests on her show and most of all through the personal stories she has shared over the years, Oprah taught me that there is a way out. Oprah herself came from very difficult beginnings and faced many challenges along the way. She faced issues of sexual abuse, drugs, body image, racism, sexism and more, and as a black woman in America, she still became one of the most powerful, recognizable and successful people in the world. If she can do that, surely I can get over a few things.” Hillary K.

“For about three years in my early twenties, I was in a very unhealthy relationship. The guy cheated on me relentlessly and I just took it and took it, with my self-esteem plummeting lower and lower with each discovery. My entire life revolved around being what I thought was desirable to him, while completely neglecting what I wanted. Perhaps the most extreme example of this was when I gave up my job at a law firm to become an exotic dancer because I thought it would make me more exciting to him. I might have hung in for God knows how long had he not had the latest girl he was sleeping with tell me that he no longer wanted to speak to me. Needless to say, after putting every ounce of my effort into the ‘relationship,’ I was devastated. Panic-stricken, I thought about suicide. I had a complete identity crisis on my hands. During this agonizing period, Oprah started her ‘Remembering Your Spirit’ segment. It was about taking time to nurture your insides; something that I had completely neglected for too long. Taking the time to breathe and take a walk and journal (all things Ms. O suggested) were simple but fundamental things that really saved me. She reminded me that I existed outside of the person I thought I loved, and that I needed to take care of myself. Good ol’ Oprah.” Rachael Biggs

5 Easy Tips

for Making the Switch to Natural Menstrual By Madeleine Shaw

A

dmit it: you’re curious. As a health-conscious woman, you’ve probably got questions about the health and environmental risks associated with disposable pads and tampons, and perhaps you’ve heard other women raving about their cozy cloth pads and convenient reusable cups. And yet the idea of washable, reusable products can be daunting at first. Here are some easy steps to having a new “period talk” with yourself.

3. Check out the buzz: One of the most common things we hear is, “I never thought I would switch to reusables, but I heard what a difference they made for other women, and I had to check it out.” Check out our website at lunapads.com to see what other Lunapads users have to say. You will find that someone out there with needs like yours has found a reusable solution that is making her periods, if not “perfect,” at least a whole lot better. 4. Connect with us! Lunapads empowers you to embrace your periods, fertility cycle and fabulous body in general. We think it’s cool, even divine, that that you are a blessed Earth Goddess who carries within her the same powerful rhythms as the moon and the tides and the seasons.

1. Gently check in with yourself: how do you feel about your period? As girls, we were taught that periods are gross and messy, necessitating a disposable approach. If your first reaction to the idea of reusable menstrual products feels uncomfortable, ask yourself why such an amazing and totally natural aspect of how your body works would freak you out. 2. Relax your ideas about the types of products that can meet your needs. Reusable products are designed to meet the same needs as disposables, plus provide more options that you may not be aware of. For example, have you ever heard of panties that have a pad built right into them? Did you know that you only need to change menstrual cups every 12 hours (instead of 3 or 4 with tampons)? Or that cloth pantyliners are available for thong panties as well as more traditional styles?

32

| fresh vancouver Issue 11

Want to talk about any of this on Twitter or Facebook? Bring it on: it’s @lunapads or facebook.com/lunapads, at your cervix! Questions? Love ‘em - let’s talk! 5. Give it a try, on the house! Lunapads offers FREE pantyliner samples (all you have to do is pay for stamps!), so what have you got to lose? Just try them at night, on light days, or when you’re at home to get the hang of it. The vast majority of women are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable, attractive, effective and easy to use and care for cloth pads actually are. 6. Bonus tip: Make a difference! I know we only said five tips, but consider this a bonus: did you know that most girls in the developing world lack access to menstrual products? As attached as western gals are to our applicators-this and wings-that, their reality is... well, zero. So what happens when they have their periods? They stay home, in some cases digging a hole in the dirt floor to sit on or using some form of (unsanitary) means (leaves, old newspaper, mud, etc). Vital days of school are missed, leading to earlier dropout rates, decreased career opportunities and increased risk of maternal mortality. For every eligible Lunapad purchased, a girl in need will receive a Ugandan-made AFRIpads pad to support her school attendance, the key to a brighter future for her and her community. Lunapads.com co-founders Madeleine Shaw and Suzanne Siemens are social entrepreneurs well known for their longstanding commitment to progressive business practices, women entrepreneurs and online marketing as well as Pads4Girls, a social change project that provides sustainable hygiene supplies to girls in developing nations to support their school attendance.

Resolve to Have a

Beautiful Smile in 2013 By Dr Kelvin Mah

A

s we flip open a new calendar and greet 2013, I’m reminded that this is the season for transformative possibilities, as folks across Vancouver and around the world forge their New Year’s resolutions. I’m also inspired to smile with pride and gratitude as I reflect upon my countless patients who have discovered that one of the easiest, quickest and (here’s the best part!) most “willpower-free” ways to achieve a permanent, positive lifestyle change is through a smile makeover. Just Dr Kelvin Mah ask Sherry! Sherry, a successful management professional with an engaging personality and an active social life, came to visit me for general oral care. Of course, as I do with all of my valued patients, I engaged Sherry as a person with dreams and goals – not merely as a patient with dental needs and wants. And through that enriching communication process, I learned that Sherry’s confidence and self-esteem had been negatively affected by her dental issues. Essentially, like so many of us, how she felt about herself was reflected in the image that she projected to the world; and in that image, she couldn’t help but see an imperfect smile. As you can imagine, the joyful energy that underlies everything I do surged into overdrive as I began talking with Sherry about the transformative possibilities of modern dentistry. After reviewing some of the cases that Sherry was familiar with (she’s a regular Fresh Vancouver reader!), we talked about my approach to smile makeovers, which are specifically designed to be affordable, non-invasive, and either completely painless or, at the very least, pleasantly comfortable. And, of course, we discussed the profound, inestimable value of transforming Sherry’s smile, both in terms of how it would make her feel, and how it would impact and influence those around her at work, at home, with friends – wherever her dynamic lifestyle would take her.

“Often in life, we invest in other people, but we neglect to take care of ourselves.” Equipped with accurate information, a practical plan, and a trusted expert to handle things every step of the way both clinically and esthetically, Sherry found it easy to decide that a smile makeover was the right,

35

smart step for her. We started with a thorough examination, which included models and photographs. Models are an important part of my work, because the design of a smile must take into account each patient’s unique bite. Photographs are also vital, as they help me communicate fine esthetic-related details. I noted that Sherry was missing two adult teeth near the front, and had retained one baby tooth. Minor work was done when she was a child, and while this helped in terms of functionality and bite, the overall appearance was less than ideal. Also, there was some obvious chipping and wear on her front teeth, along with a dark appearance around some older dental work. I began with a customized whitening program to brighten Sherry’s entire smile. I then reshaped her gum line around specific teeth, which gave her a more harmonious and youthful appearance. Lastly, I prepared her teeth for two bridges and porcelain veneers, using ultra-modern materials that allow me to create wonderful solutions as conservatively as possible. From beginning to end, Sherry’s smile makeover was completed in a few appointments. The final result was spectacular, and while I’d love to discuss (at length!) how delighted I am to this day with the outcome, Sherry’s own words speak much louder than mine ever could: “I’m extremely happy with my new smile, and I really like looking at the result in the mirror and in photographs. I also feel that my smile is broader and has improved my appearance in a subtle way, so that while people around me can sense that something has improved, they don’t know exactly what – and I like that! To be frank, before the smile makeover, I was starting to feel my age, and Dr. Mah helped change that anxiety into a feeling of confidence and happiness. Often in life, we invest in other people, but we neglect to take care of ourselves. My smile makeover was an investment in myself, and the rewards and payoff are so much bigger than I ever imagined. It’s hard to explain, but I didn’t realize how much my old smile was bothering me until it was gone!” This is an inspiring smile story about a special patient. Yet more than that, it’s a testament to the transformative possibilities of modern dentistry, and to my lifelong commitment to changing lives for the better – one smile at a time. That’s a resolution I’ll never grow tired of making. In fact, you might say it’s always New Year’s Day at Smile City Square Dental!

Dr. Kelvin Mah’s relaxing, stylish and ultra-modern practice, Smile City Square Dental, is located inside Vancouver’s City Square Shopping Centre. Dr. Mah and his warm and inviting team provide a variety of patient-first dental solutions, including general dentistry, smile makeovers, restorative dentistry, and oral health procedures. Ten Anti-Aging Secrets

Suzanne Somers Wants You to Know “Aging gracefully? How about not aging at all!” reads the back cover of Suzanne Somers’ latest book, Bombshell. The prolific queen of fitness, beauty and anti-aging is back with her twentysecond book on how to stop aging in its tracks. At age 66, the stunning Somers most certainly knows something the rest of us don’t. Her new book is filled with interviews and discussions with leading anti-aging doctors and scientists who reveal ground-breaking advancements, plus glimpses of what’s to come. Some of it may be more radical than the average woman might feel comfortable with. However, many of Somers’ anti-aging tips are simple, practical steps we should all be taking each and every day. Below are ten of the key pointers she provides in her list of age-reversing ideas to consider. 1. Take melatonin nightly and consider taking GABA for restful sleep. 2. Reduce stress by avoiding overworking. 3. Balance your hormones. 4. Use organic cosmetics as superfood for your skin. 5. Drink eight glasses of water each day and take daily vitamins, including vitamin C, and minerals (determined by blood test). 6. Eat an organic, anti-inflammatory diet containing plenty of fruits and vegetables, plus calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium to keep your body slightly alkaline. 7. Take a daily spoonful of natural fibre. 8. Keep your cells healthy by consuming quality foods, especially almonds, apples, avocados, beans, beets, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, grapefruit, kale, meat, olive oil, oranges, sea vegetables, sweet potatoes, tea, tomatoes and wild salmon. 9. Exercise regularly. 10. Avoid pharmaceutical drugs unless absolutely necessary. Sounds easy, right? Implement these 10 basic anti-aging strategies in 2013 and just see how wonderful you feel (and look!) by the end of this year!

Yoga

for Daily Energy By Zara Durrani

E

ven if I don’t have time for a full hourlong yoga practice, it’s nice to get my energy flowing before I start my day. Here are some of my favourite yoga poses. Try to hold each pose for 30 to 45 seconds, and remember to breathe!

Intention: Before starting the practice, I like to take a minute to set an intention for my practice, or simply check in to see how I’m feeling. If you are not used to meditating, just focus on your breath by bringing your attention to the inhale and exhale and feeling your belly move as you breathe. Cobra: Cobra pose is great to help open up the chest and a great back bend. You want to move slowly into this pose. If cobra is uncomfortable for you, try doing sphinx pose. While lying down, place your hands beneath your shoulders, legs are together as you inhale slowly coming up. If you like, bring a soft smile to your face and remember to breathe. Crescent Lunge: Start in a lunge position or you can flow into this from downward dog. If you want to challenge yourself, keep your back leg straight. Make sure to keep your hips square, and as you inhale, proudly lift your arms up towards the sky or you can also keep them on your hips. Warrior 2: From lunge, you can move into the strong Warrior 2 to help open up your hips and strengthen your quads. Turn your right foot in slightly to the right and your left foot out to the left 90 degrees. As you exhale, bend your front thigh over the ankle of your front foot. Keep pressing your left foot into the ground to help anchor you. Now lift your arms up like arrows with your torso in the middle, make sure it’s not moving forward as you gaze over your right hand.

Dancer’s Pose: Start in mountain pose, standing with feet hip-width apart. Shift your weight to your left leg; bend your right knee and hold your right foot from the inside with your right hand. Lift your left hand towards the sky. Breathe. If you like, you can stay right here. Otherwise, take a deep breath, lengthen the left arm and torso up and forward while the right leg lengthens back and up. See if you can allow your torso to become parallel to the floor as you keep kicking your back leg. This is a very active pose, and requires tremendous concentration. I always remind myself to breathe and smile. This is a fantastic pose to help stretch the shoulders, chest, thighs and abdomen. Needless to say, it is a great posture to help improve your balance and concentration. Tree Pose: Stand with feet hip-width apart, then shift your weight to your left leg as you bend your right knee. Reach down with your right hand and clasp your right ankle. You can place your foot up against either the ankle, knee or inner thigh of your standing leg. If you feel like challenging yourself and your foot is not slipping, take your right foot and place it on the outside of your left leg. You can hold it with your right hand, or bring both hands in prayer position. Bow Pose: Bow pose is an amazing backbend. We spend all day bending forward, that’s why I enjoy doing backbends a lot. Bow pose helps stretch the entire front of the body and strengthens back muscles. While lying on your belly, bend your knees and hold your feet in the middle. As you inhale, lift your heels up and away from the body and make sure to keep your shoulder blades down. Full Wheel Pose: Begin by lying on the ground with the soles of your feet on the floor, close to your sitting bones. Place your hands on the floor just above your shoulders with fingers

spread wide, finger tips pointing towards your shoulders. Take your time as you press your feet into the ground and press your palms down as you slowly lift your torso up evenly. To come out of this pose, bend your elbows, tuck your chin in and slowly lower down. Half Twist: Sit on the ground with both knees bent and heels pointing outward. Shift your weight to the left and take your right leg over the left knee. Keep the spine erect. Now bring the left arm down on the outside of the right knee and place your right hand on the floor behind you, close to your spine. As you exhale, twist to the right and look over the right shoulder. This is a great posture to help increase flexibility in your spine and also helps detoxify liver and kidneys, and stimulate digestive fire. Corpse Pose: It is truly very important to allow your body and nervous system to relax after your practice. Savasana, also known as the corpse pose, helps calm the brain and relieve stress and mild depression. This is the time for your body to reap all the benefits of your practice.

You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman W e all love to go to the spa, and our skin, hair, face and nails love it, too. But in these days where we are becoming more and more cautious about what we are putting in our bodies, we’re also realizing how important it is that we are careful about what we put on our bodies. Celebrating its twenty-first year, The Wellness Show is Western Canada’s largest trade show dedicated to helping you live a more balanced life. It includes 300 exhibitors and over 100 guest speakers, workshops and demonstrations. The show takes place February 15-17, 2013, at the Vancouver Convention Centre. A new feature at The Wellness Show this year is an entire section dedicated to natural beauty, including makeup, spas, workshops, demonstrations, makeovers, mini-facials, and alternatives to cosmetic surgery. You’ll also find lots of great food, drink and supplements to make you glow from the inside out.

Some of the highlights from this section include: Better than Botox: Safe Natural Anti-Aging Secrets from Ayurveda, a presentation by Kristen Ma, co-founder of Pure + simple Beauty, and named “Best Facialist” in the city of Toronto. Pure + Simple is a Canadian spa chain and skincare manufacturer whose mission is to provide clients with results-focused skincare products made with the most natural ingredients. Kristen is also an esthetician and Ayurvedic practitioner who has authored the book Beauty, Pure + simple. “When we assess a new client’s skin, we must look at them as holistic human beings rather than just focus on what is evident externally,” says Ms. Ma. “Yes, we need to look at their skin, but it is also important to review their lifestyles, their internal health, their emotional states, and their tactile and fragrance preferences. Choosing the right skincare is not like shopping for clothes. You don’t see something you like and get one in your size. Skincare is so specific to the individual, and sometimes it takes time to see results. That’s why we’re here. Not as sales people, but as consultants and guides.” Hormone Power: The Secrets That Will Keep You Vibrantly Alive: a presentation by Dr. Brian Martin. “Hormones act from the inside out,” says Dr. Martin. “Hormones are powerful messengers that affect every

44

cell in the body; without them we would not survive or thrive. Hormones must be at optimal levels throughout a person’s life for every cell tissue and organ to operate optimally. Imbalances or rapid decreases (such as menopause, excessive stress, or poor diet) will age a body and person rapidly. Optimal hormone balance is essential for disease prevention, optimal sexual function, soft elastic skin, a lean body (with less fat), memory, mood, sleep and overall quality of life.” Sex, Memory and Aging: a presentation by Dr Kwong; from Nourish Spa. Makeovers with True Natural Cosmetics: True Natural is a vegan, all natural line of skincare, including cleansers, sunscreen, and anti-aging treatments. Founded by Uli Jacob, this True Natural uses the highest quality, nontoxic ingredients combined with state-of-the-art technology to produce the safest and best performing personal care. Mini facial treatments with Jeff Ostheimer, an acupuncturist. Acupuncture? A natural beauty treatment? Yes! “The benefit of acupuncture is twofold,” says Ostheimer, who is a Registered Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner with his own private practice since 1999. “First, these tissues are “reset” by the acupuncture. Second, the needle puncture creates “microtrauma”. This activates and induces the migration of healing factors, including platelets and stem cells within the dermis and epidermis.” Ostheimer will finish up the “mini facial” with a high-tech serum that makes skin behave more youthfully, including improvements with skin elasticity, tone and texture. Earth Lab Cosmetics: created by Diane Peterson and Jennifer MacDougall, a mother-daughter team, Earth Lab Cosmetics includes makeup, brushes and skincare that is free of additives, fillers and preservatives. Their vision is to create a “clean” makeup line, full of color that works well for women of all different skin colors, tones and types, by offering the finest natural minerals and raw pigments, derived directly from nature and nothing more!
