about fremantle arts centre FAC is one of Australia’s leading arts centres, housed within an iconic heritage building and beautiful grounds. Enjoy contemporary exhibitions, a shop selling the finest WA-designed wares, an expansive live music program, art courses and an idyllic cafe. Open 7 days. Free entry.

director’s welcome In April, Fremantle Arts Centre marks the centenary of World War I with three diverse exhibitions which focus not on the conflict itself but rather the place of Gallipoli and its enduring role in shaping the Australian identity (p2); the earth and sky seen during battle (p4); and the effects of wartime service on artists long after their military careers are over (p5). Our music program shows no sign of slowing as the weather cools down. The City of Fremantle’s Street Arts Festival will vitalise the city over Easter with FAC hosting a number of free performances and a special ticketed show Pasaje, featuring the traditional band El Son Entero in their first ever shows outside Cuba (p15). Lost & Found Opera present Médée, an intimate and haunting opera based on the ancient Greek tragedy Medea, presented to a small crowd of 50 (p17). FAC’s learning program enjoyed its biggest term to date in term one, with more than 850 adult enrolments. We are delighted to offer more new courses in term 2, including an exciting songwriting workshop for teens taught by Kav Temperley, frontman of much-loved Fremantle band Eskimo Joe (p27). As always, there’s something for everyone in the coming months. I hope we will see you at FAC very soon. Jim Cathcart Director, Fremantle Arts Centre

'the beautiful city’ lev vykopal

OPENING FRI 10 APRIL | 6:30PM | BAR OPEN | FREE | MAIN GALLERY & HALL EXHIBITION RUNS SAT 11 APRIL – SUn 24 MAY One hundred years after the historic battle on its shores, Gallipoli ‘the beautiful city’ reflects upon Gallipoli’s contrasting history as a site of beauty, horror and for Australians, legend. Gallipoli, derived from the Greek ‘kalli-pollis’ meaning ‘beautiful city’, has been a thoroughfare for conflicting civilizations from the Ancient Greeks right up to the ANZACs. Valued for its strategic position and fertile soils, the land has led a dual life of prosperity and destruction. Lev Vykopal, a British born artist who migrated to Australia, was interested in these contrasts and the enduring symbolic importance that Gallipoli holds in the modern Australian psyche, inspiring a 2013 residency on the peninsula. The drawings, paintings, plein-air observations and graphic works exhibited are the result of that period. Drawing in-situ, Vykopal incorporated natural pigments from the landscape to document such iconic sites as the eroded gullies of Anzac Cove, the trenches at the Nek and the volcanic wilderness of Suvla. These beautiful and tranquil images show the peninsula as it exists today, and are at odds with the horrors experienced there one hundred years ago. Free audio tour available

Opening Fri 10 April | 6:30pm | free Exhibition Runs Sat 11 April – sun 24 May Image: gallipoli.8.05.1915. midnight.southernsky I, 2015, Paul Uhlmann, oil on linen, 35 x 44.5cm (detail)

In Gallipoli: earth & sky WA artists Paul Uhlmann and Lev Vykopal transport audiences back to the battle of Gallipoli, depicting the earth and sky that soldiers from both sides would have witnessed on the peninsula. Vykopal’s cold-cast bronze models of key topographical features across the Gallipoli Peninsula are exhibited alongside Uhlmann’s paintings of the night sky, as it looked on significant dates throughout the 1915 campaign. This perspective highlights some of the common experiences shared by every person involved in these battles – for regardless of side or rank, they were fighting under the same sky and treading the same earth. Breaking Cover is an exhibition of artworks by artists who served with the military in times of war. Rather than a pictorial record of wartime subjects, this exhibition draws together artworks from across the Collection created in peacetime, uncovering the intrinsic role that art making played in restoration of the artists’ well being in their post-war lives. The exhibition presents an eclectic selection of artworks by significant WA and national artists, some of whom continue to deal with the trauma of war. Breaking Cover includes works by seventeen artists who turned to art making after military service, or were commissioned Official Australian War Artists, covering both World Wars, the Korean War and a peace keeping mission to the Solomon Islands in 2009. Breaking Cover includes artworks by George Benson, RJ Dorizzi, Brian McKay, ex de Medici, Frank Norton, Guy Grey-Smith, Arthur Streeton and Trevor Woodward. Public Program Curator talk Sat 11 April | p11 The City of Fremantle Art Collection, established in 1958, is the largest municipal collection in WA with over 1,390 works. The Collection’s focus on Fremantle artists and Australian prints celebrates the enduring importance of the visual arts to Fremantle.

A story of Cuban music with traditional band El Son Entero in their first ever shows outside Cuba

Sat 4 April | Doors 7pm | Show 8pm | Inner Courtyard 18+ | Bar Open | Food Available | seated event | Tickets $44.40

Pasaje (Passage) is an extraordinarily evocative bi-lingual journey into Cuban cultural history told through music and film with a live performance by the outstanding traditional Cuban band El Son Entero. Touring Australia in their first ever shows outside Cuba, the seven-piece band will be accompanied by a captivating montage of rare footage from the archives of Cuba’s oldest recording company, EGREM. Popular Cuban musical styles such as son, bolero, cha cha, chanqui and trova are explored from their historical origins in Spanish colonialism and African slavery, to their current global popularity. Alternatively narrated in English and Spanish, Pasaje offers audiences a unique insight into a complex, often controversial and richly layered Caribbean culture – a cultural history that is rarely seen or heard on these shores. El Son Entero, from Camaguey in central Cuba, are a classically trained and deeply passionate group of exceptional musicians. With tightly woven string rhythms, full Afro-Cuban percussion, blistering trumpet and tight vocal harmonies, they inhabit their band name – they are ‘the full sound’.

In their newest production, Lost & Found has partnered with FAC to present Darius Milhaud’s (1892–1974) 1938 opera Médée. Taken from the final sections of the ancient Greek tragedy Medea, Médée explores a woman’s psychological state as it shifts from the contemplation of marital infidelity to exacting revenge and, in a chilling climax to the slowly wrought catharsis, the murder of her two children. FAC’s history, first as a lunatic asylum and later as a women’s home makes it an apt staging point. artists in residence With 11 studios and a residential apartment, FAC's Artists in Residence program attracts local, national and international artists who are experimenting and developing their practice. Many of the FAC studios are accessible to the public so you can meet the artists and watch them in action. Tim Woodward (VIC) will make an experimental film in the grounds and surroundings of FAC following his 2014 residency. Studio 1 Sally Bower and Rose Megirian (WA) are multidisciplinary artists and designers collaborating as Happy Yes. They will engage with the public to develop artworks, prints, fabrics and garments, reflecting on the way in which individuals are presented and understood through the clothes they wear. Follow them on Instagram @WeAreHappyYes to watch their progress and keep up to date about upcoming events and workshops. Studio 2 Ruth Johnston (VIC) will preserve and document local weeds and exotic species through stencilling, printing and sap-dye fixing, as she uses the life of weeds as an analogy for migration. Studio 2 Jacqui Monks (WA) will investigate the possibilities of the human consciousness, drawing over printed frames of video to create ‘parallel worlds’, simultaneously working with instruments of the present and the past. Studio 3 Carly Lynch (WA) will explore how the archives of local libraries and museums can be both the material and impetus for new drawing, sculpture, performance and installation works. Lynch is one of two recent graduates to receive the FAC Print Award Residency. Studio 3

Aaron Prior (WA) will explore print media as a bridge between fine art and mass culture, focusing on how decoration, art and craft are defined within popular culture. Studio 4 Matt McAlpine (WA) will develop and explore ideas of colonial history, materiality and the Australian landscape through painting and sculpture. McAlpine is one of two recent graduates to receive the FAC Print Award Residency. Studio 4 Antonia Radich (NSW) will use photography, film and smartphone applications to map walks and daily travels between, and around, the Fremantle Port and the Fremantle War Memorial to create narratives of movement between places. Studio 6 Tom Blake (WA) will explore human connection through technology, collating video and photographic information gathered whilst living alone for three months aboard a sailboat in Botany Bay. As part of this project Blake is looking for people who will be flying into Sydney Airport during daylight hours from 1 Mar – 5 May to participate in his work Boundless Planes. Contact the artist at boundlessplanes@gmail.com to participate. Studio 7 Jessica Wilkes (WA) is interested in the objects that we surround ourselves with and will work with discarded objects, reconstructing them to reflect upon imagined pasts and future possibilities. animation with steven aiton How did you first get into animation? As a child I enjoyed watching animations on TV. I first created animation during a Year 8 excursion to Scitech. They had a stop-motion animation station which had Lego encased in Perspex. Let’s just say no one else got to have a go! It was during my university studies that I bought my own computer and went about learning 3D animation and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been working in community arts and on animation projects for the past 14 years. I enjoy teaching and giving people of all ages the gift of animation.

What’s one of the most memorable moments you’ve had teaching a FAC course? We have a very talented student who has been attending animation classes for quite some time but is now a fair bit older than our advertised Animation Club age limit. So it was decided that he come back and mentor the younger kids. It reminds me how far we’ve come since that single FAC animation workshop one school holiday long ago. What do the kids learn in your courses? They learn how to make their own short animated film using technology they might be able to set up at home. It’s a combination of hands-on making, technology and some fun ideas. Anyone can do it. I like to focus on the principles of movement, especially with the older kids advancing through the levels.

What is the Animation Club? Animation Club is for kids who have completed Create & Animate levels 1, 2 and 3. It runs once a month and you get to spend a day with like-minded animation enthusiasts making shorts. Everyone has loads of fun. The more times you attend in a year the longer you have to work on something. The quality of the work is just astonishing for the ages involved.
