Welcome to the 108th Fremantle Festival! Fremantle has long been an incubator for artists and the Fremantle Festival is successful in bringing many of their grand ideas to fruition. Providing the stunning imagery for this year’s festival program is Art Adrift, an exhibition of floating artworks, vessels and photography that embodies life adrift on the ocean. (page 29) I look forward to a number of fantastic projects bringing our iconic heritage buildings to life. Viola Dana proves crime doesn’t pay at the Fremantle Prison, performing a unique sound track to silent film classics. ( page 22) WA’s oldest public building, The Round House, will be filled with musicians performing a response to the building each weekend of the festival opening with Ross Bolleter, Nu Jazz Ensemble and the Nova Ensemble. (page 34)

This year’s festivals sees a record number of Fremantle’s art studios: Art source, Fspace, PSAS and Bathers Beach art precinct throwing open their doors as a window for the public to see into Fremantle’s creative scene. Since introducing the Black Box Theatre Program we have been proud to support a plethora of artists to get a show up during the festival. Pop into the festivals theatre hub at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre or at Little Creatures Next Door. These inspirational events run alongside Fremantle Festival favourites: Blessing of the Fleet, Seafood Festival, Fireworks, Wardarnji, Coffee Festival, Children’s Fiesta, Norfolk Lanes and the street parade. With so much going on grab a program, find your favourite Fremantle cafe and plan your festival adventure!

Round House Music Series Ross Jazz at the Embedded Bolleter Round House

For the festival’s three weekends, Fremantle’s most iconic building, The Round House, will host three extraordinary concerts from some of the state’s leading musicians. Three very different musical interpretations will explore the history and haunting ambiance of this very special building. An experience not to missed. Presented by Fremantle Ports.

– Ruined Pianos

Ross Bolleter is an avant-garde composer and improviser, noted for his experimentations with ruined pianos. That is, pianos left exposed to the ravages of time and weather, a process that imparts unique qualities and unexpected musical possibilities. Ross’s performances in the Round House are a rare opportunity to experience a unique West Australian composer, improvising astonishing and haunting music in the State’s oldest, most iconic building. The Shoesmith Nu Jazz Ensemble

Premiering at the Fremantle Festival, Jazz at The Round House is a night of haunting new music that explores the dark side of Fremantle’s colonial past. The improvised compositions will debut over two evenings in Western Australia’s oldest building. Avant-garde jazz explorations will be shaped and inspired by its distinct architectural design and the ghosts of its past. Listen for the cry of the lonely prisoner, the anguished wail of the indigenous captive en-route to Rottnest Island, the clank of chains, the grind of hard labour or the crack of the guard’s whip. A night that will evoke a dark and mysterious history in what is quite possibly WA’s most unique music venue. In 2009, Australian musician Julien Poulson walked into a karaoke bar in Phonm Pehn and was stunned by a lone female voice singing Penny Lee’s ‘Johnny Guitar’. He invited the naturally gifted singer, Srey Thy, to start a band. That band became The Cambodian Space Project. Back at Kulcha by popular demand, they not only cover and preserve songs from the golden age of 60s Cambodian pop but also write dazzlingly original Khmer psychedelic rock of their own.
