The Town Hall will also host the 82nd Pioneers’ Foundation Luncheon and a concert by long-time Fremantle musician Bernard Carney, who will play some of his early songs and tell tales of his 30 years in the local music scene.

We celebrate our migrant heritage with the photographic exhibition Italians in Fremantle. Other exhibitions include Treasures from the Archives of the Fremantle Local History Collection, and a celebration of the City’s highly successful Artist-in-Residence program, which has run since 1974. As always the festival features many guided walks which are a fantastic way to get immersed in the city’s past. Take a walk through Fremantle’s Jewish history, explore the city’s West End and the Cemetery, join convict tours, experience Fremantle working clubs and hop on-board the ever-popular Don’s Tram which is back by popular demand. And don’t forget the academic side of the festival, where you can enjoy a number of public lectures, workshops and debates. These are complemented by many open days and special events. This year’s program is packed full of highlights and hidden gems and I urge you to get out and enjoy the many offerings that only a city as heritage-rich as Fremantle can provide. Heritage Architect Alan Kelsall leads visitors through the extensive conservation work done to this significant Fremantle heritage site.
See pre-1930 motorcycles in action as the Vintage Motorcycle Club of WA rides from the Town Hall in commemoration of the feats of local motorcyclist Arthur Grady who in 1924 became the first person to ride around Australia on a motorcycle. Come down and admire WA’s amazing motorcycling heritage at the ride and post-ride display in Kings Square.

Convict Exhibitions Guided Floor Talk
Following last year’s wildly successful event, John Dowson and Rob Campbell return to enthral listeners with stories and insights into the life and history of Fremantle’s old lunatic asylum, established 150 years ago in what is now the Fremantle Arts Centre.
Fremantle Prison’s Head Curator Sandra Murray gives a guided floor talk on two dynamic exhibitions. Women Transported: Life in Australia’s Convict Female Factories is a confronting and poignant insight into the lives of women convicts. The Catalpa Escape brings one of the most audacious prison breaks of all time to life, the extraordinary escape of Irish Fenian convicts 135 years ago.

Talks and Public Lectures Join us for a series of public lectures on topics relating to the history of Fremantle and The University of Notre Dame Australia Mr Terry Craig - 1 June & 3 - 6 June Currently Curator of the University’s art collection and University historian, Terry previously held the position of Director of Campus Development at Notre Dame. He was responsible, in collaboration with architects and builders, for the development of all the buildings on the Broome, Sydney and Fremantle campuses. Lecture title: Notre Dame’s Art and Architecture The University of Notre Dame Australia is located in the unique West End of Fremantle. The area was once the busy hub of port activity. The changes to containerisation in the shipping industry meant that many of the warehouse buildings, banks and hotels were left vacant and fell into disrepair. Terry gives his insight into how the University has carefully adapted these beautiful and historic buildings for University use. He also speaks on Notre Dame’s extensive Indigenous and religious art collections, which can be found throughout the campus. Ms Madison Lloyd-Jones, Student, PhD Candidate - 31 May Madison Lloyd-Jones is a PhD candidate in the School of Arts and Sciences at Notre Dame. Madison is developing a thesis that considers the homefront experience of women in Fremantle during World War II and the impact of the American presence during this period.

Dr Shane Burke - 28 - 30 May & 2 June Associate Dean School of Arts and Sciences Dr Shane Burke is a lecturer in Archaeology and History at Notre Dame. His research interests include the archaeology and history of Western Australia’s colonial period (1826 to 1900), particularly sites associated with the State’s first ten years of settlement showing settlers’ adaptive processes by their material remains. He is presently researching the 1830-dated Peel town site near Kwinana. Lecture title: Archaeological Excavations in Fremantle’s West End Fremantle’s standing buildings show the town’s rich heritage. However, what is not widely known is that these same buildings preserve the archaeological remnants of the early town. This lecture examines a suite of archaeological excavations undertaken in Fremantle – concentrating specifically on work carried out at the corner of Cliff and Croke streets– that show the City’s earliest European heritage is still well preserved beneath our feet. when

Melbourne-based artist Lily Hibberd looks at the historical relationship between asylums and rivers in a large-scale, rambling installation comprising video, posters, primary historical sources and sculpture. The work examines the story of confinement in Australia while questioning asylum practices that continue today. Moores Building The Moores Building represents a model of successful conservation within one of the oldest and most significant surviving groups of buildings in the metropolitan area. The conservation principles of new and old designed to create a harmonious whole are represented clearly. The building now houses a contemporary art gallery as well as a successful cafe.
Italians in Fremantle: a Photographic History offers a glimpse into the richness of one of our city’s most significant migrant groups. These fascinating photographs capture the essence of the working, cultural and social lives of local Italian migrants from the turn of the last century to the 1950s and ‘60s.

Women Transported: Life in Australia’s Convict Female Factories An estimated one in five Australians has an ancestor who spent time in a convict female factory. Women Transported is a confronting exhibition about the harsh lives of these female convicts. It tells their story through interactive multimedia displays, colonial artefacts, artworks, letters, photographs and domestic items. This exhibition is a University of Western Sydney and Parramatta Heritage Centre Partnership.
Arthur Grady Display Don’t miss a display of memorabilia commemorating the feats of Fremantle motorcyclist Arthur Grady from his 1924 ride around Australia. The display includes a replica of the motorcycle used by Mr Grady as well as newspaper clippings and photographs from the time.
