The Gibson Legacy An Exhibition in Second Life® May 2015 In 2008, Gibson Guitar Company had a presence in the virtual world of Second Life®. Managed by musician Von Johin and others, the sim offered several venues with live music. Also offered was an astounding collection of authentic and factory-authorized replicas of at least twenty-two of the company’s classic and contemporary guitars (and one F-style mandolin). The models were meticulously created by master virtual luthier Myriam Beck and were offered to the public for free. (Similar quality instruments were and are sold for as much as L$2,000.) This exhibit displays the entire genuine Gibson guitar collection (as far as is known) from the 2008 offering. As with many commercial enterprises experimenting with marketing in virtual worlds, Gibson’s adventure was not long lived. Those of us who were excited by their presence and the amazing products they were giving away now treasure their rare copies of these remarkable instruments.
