How to Choose a Credit Union

A

credit union is a fantastic way to avoid the hassles often experienced from conventional banks. In these economic times, many people are finding out that credit unions have a lot to offer. It is a great place to find a financial solution while helping your community. Credit unions are typically nonprofit operations owned by their members. They are not owned by individuals or conglomerates. The banks charge less in fees than for-profit banks. Any dividends go to the members instead of shareholders. These days, credit unions are a good deal. They usually offer better interest rates on savings accounts and competitive rates on various loans. You might get a fantastic rate on a student loan, mortgage, auto loan or credit card. Also, the federal government stands behind credit unions. Most deposits are insured up to $250,000.

24

HOW-TO GUIDE

Selecting a credit union is not difficult.

The first step is to research those in your community and their membership requirements.

These days, credit unions are a good deal. They usually offer better interest rates on savings accounts and competitive rates on various loans. area. Then narrow your possibilities by researching eligibility, services offer and fees charged by each credit union. Verify the current interest rates on their accounts. If you can’t find the rates online, call and ask them for the percentages

Find out if there are any fees associated with the accounts you want to open.

Some credit unions are available to employees of specific companies, groups of public service or school employees. But offers extend eligibility to anyone willing to follow their membership requirements. You may be asked to join a food co-op or other organization in order to qualify for membership.

As with traditional savings and loan banks, you might be required to pay a fee if you fall below a minimum balance. Check about other requirements. You might need to use your debit card a certain amount of times each month.

A simple Internet search is an excellent starting point.

If you are in the market for a specific loan, research to see if the loan is issued by the credit union.

unions offering that type of loan, compare interest rates and specials to see who has the best deal.

Of course, convenience is something to keep in mind. Check for availability of online services, weekday and weekend hours, where branches and ATMs are located.

You should also understand any fees associated with ATM or debit card usage. If you use ATMs frequently, those charges can add up fast.

Some credit unions belong to a nation network of credit unions for shared services. It might mean more access to ATMs and other services in case you move or go on vacation. If you have children attending college in other cities, this can be useful. Once you have completed your research, make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of each credit union. You can easily compare them. Upon choosing your credit union, visit the branch so you can understand all of the services. Learn more about the benefits of membership.

How to Choose a Computer Repair Specialist

I

n today’s technological era, a computer crash affects nearly every aspect of life. Modern society has become increasingly dependent on computers, so it is vital to find a professional to quickly and successfully repair your computer when the inevitable happens. Whether you use your computer for work or entertainment, it’s a good idea to find a qualified computer repair specialist you can trust. Here are some factors to consider before beginning your search:

Type of Device Do you use a PC (Windows based PC) or a Mac (Macintosh by Apple)? Most computer specialists will focus on only one system. If there’s an apple logo on your computer, you have a Mac. If you are unsure, then chances are you have a PC. PCs and Macs are quite different from each other, so choose a technician who focuses on your type of computer. Is it a desktop or a laptop?

July 27-August 2, 2016

Laptop repair is quite different than desktop work and is far more complex. Repairs, software and parts are very different for both Mac and PC, so it is vital to have the correct technician doing your repairs. This can make a big difference on getting your computer repaired quickly and affordably. If your tablet or smart phone is giving you trouble, be sure to find someone who specializes in those devices.

Training and Certification Microsoft and Apple give software certifications to technicians for completing a specialized training program. Anyone who has these certifications has demonstrated self-discipline; however, that is no guarantee of a technician’s ability. In the world of computers, experience and skill carry more weight than a diploma. Many repair “experts” come and go quickly, so find out how long their business has been operating.

Price

Experience The ideal specialist is someone who has successfully fixed many computers. You don’t want someone getting onthe-job training by fixing your machine.

free-times.com

Ask how long they’ve worked on computers and how they keep up with new innovations. Experienced specialists receive ongoing training to keep up with the latest hardware, operating systems and support processes. Check your social network for recommendations; someone has probably had service recently. You might also want to consult with the IT department at your workplace; they often know the local repair companies.

twitter.com/freetimessc

As with most essential services, don’t automatically choose the person who advertises the lowest rates. The old adage “nothing is free” is true. Many shops offer “free diagnostics,” but you

facebook.com/freetimes

A DV E R T I S I N G

may find that you’re paying someone to guess about problems with your device. This often leads to delays, frustration and higher costs. It’s usually better to pay a reputable shop to perform a thorough diagnosis of your computer before you commit to expensive parts; then you’ll know if it’s worthwhile to repair, or if it’s time to replace.

Make a Personal Visit Visit the repair shop where your potential specialist works. It is important that you feel comfortable and confident in the repair of your computer. Look around - if their shop is a dirty mess of computer piles with little organization, this may be a sign of your future! Be wary of sales representatives who might try to sell you products rather than actually fixing the problem. As you describe the problem, watch the technician’s response carefully including both words and body language. Do they build up your confidence by their knowledge and skill, and do you trust them with your computer? If not, take your business elsewhere. When you find the right mix of experience, skill and price, you can rest easy that the problem will be solved.

How to Choose a Gym

W

hen people think of fitness facilities, they imagine a bunch of thin, beautiful people wearing expensive workout clothes. In reality, people of all shapes and sizes join gyms. Do you find gyms intimidating? These facilities are a fantastic way to lose weight, stay fit and have fun. Gyms can help you achieve your health and weight goals. Experts at the facility will be happy to educate you about nutrition and wellness. And there are plenty of gyms out there where you won’t feel intimidated. A popular local option is Planet Fitness. Planet Fitness’ mission is to enhance people’s lives by providing a high-quality fitness experience in a welcoming, non-intimidating environment, which they call the Judgement Free Zone®. It is a welcoming atmosphere where anyone can feel comfortable working out. A good workout releases endorphins, which improve your mood and fights stress. Exercise also increases energy levels and improves sleep. Building

muscles helps you burn calories more effectively. Consistent workouts lower blood pressure, while reducing the risk of some types of cancer, osteoporosis and Type 2 diabetes. Many people have a hard time forming good fitness habits. Fitness regimens can be difficult to maintain. We often create excuses or our schedule simply doesn’t permit time to exercise. It can be hard to stay motivated. But when you have exhausted all of your excuses and a healthier lifestyle becomes a priority, then finding a gym is a fantastic first step on the path toward a happier life. Joining a gym will help cure the boredom you might feel when working out. These facilities have a variety of equipment, programs, classes and teachers. You can alter your workouts easily and keep exercise interesting.

A DV E R T I S I N G

Paying for membership increases your chances of working out. It is harder to form excuses to skip exercise when you’re paying for it whether you go or not. Becoming a member is a great opportunity to meet people with similar health goals who can offer motivation and support. Once you’ve decided to join a gym, the number of choices can seem daunting. Keep in mind that gyms should be inspiring places. You will need to feel comfortable and motivated to keep coming back. The right facility for you might not be the right place for someone else. Each gym has different classes, programs, amenities and services to help members work on their abilities and goals. Personal trainers can be especially helpful if you need instruction or encouragement. Each trainer will have his or her style of communication -- from mild and uplifting to severe and harsh. They will help you map out realistic goals that are tailored to meet your individual needs. A good personal trainer will offer a health assessment before working out with you. He or she will understand your physical limits and then work to expand those boundaries safely. He or she will

constantly ask you to do just one more rep, one more minute on the machine. If your trainer seems without compassion or pity, it is only because he is pushing you for your own good. These professionals will also give advice on nutrition, effective gym routines and proper stances for weight training. If you have health restrictions such as joint pain, low-impact workouts are available. One such low-impact workout is Pilates, as it uses smooth motions and gliding actions to tone muscles and improve flexibility. Many gyms have a pool. They might even offer aqua aerobics. This comprehensive workout uses the water’s resistance for extra toning. It is usually very safe for people with joint pain. If you can find a private instructor, you can get an excellent workout involving both cardio and endurance training. When choosing a gym, remember your future goals. Whether you opt for the services of a personal trainer, or participate in a Pilates, weight training or water aerobics class, your aim should be to improve constantly and have fun.

How to Choose an HVAC Company

P

rolong the life of your HVAC system and prevent equipment failure by hiring a qualified professional to service and maintain it.

When your heating or air conditioning system fails, it can be a nightmare. Whether it is a cold winter day or sweltering hot outside, the HVAC system in your home is important to your comfort and safety. Most people cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. The elderly and people with chronic health problems need to have the temperature stabilized in their homes. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Ask people in your social network whom they might recommend. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area.

After creating a list of candidates, call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency or weekend service? Does your contractor provide preventative maintenance with your equipment? Preventative maintenance is critical to the life and performance of your HVAC equipment. High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the AirConditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. How to Choose a Music Academy

T

he right music school will help you or your child accomplish your goals and become the musician you want to be. For children, music lessons are an essential part of childhood that can improve their grades, confidence, and self-esteem. Studies show that children who learn to play a musical instrument at an early age may also learn to read earlier, not to mention that playing music is just plain fun! For adults, it seems as though learning to play a musical instrument is on everyone’s bucket list. The good news is that it is never too late to learn. Playing an instrument can help you learn to be more alert. It stimulates the brain and helps improve memory. Whether you pick up a guitar, a set of drumsticks, or the piano, you can relax and have fun. So, how do you choose the right music academy? Look for an established music academy. Many aspiring music teachers start their own schools and after just a few years, they realize how hard it is to run a business, and they close. Look for a school

that has been in business for at least 10 years and that has an established track record. Also ask if they have received any awards for business or customer service. These are good indicators that the school is a quality institution. Ask about the director’s credentials. Lots of musicians that have never been to college start their own music studios. It’s important to choose a school that has a Director with at least a Master’s Degree in Music. If they’ve been a college professor that is also a great sign that you’re in good hands. So when doing your research be sure to ask about the Director’s credentials. Have they just been playing and teaching a long time, or do they actually have academic credentials inteaching music and have done so at the college level. Do they have a family safety plan? If you’re providing lessons for your family, putting your children in a safe environment is of the upmost importance. Ask the school if they have a “Family Safety Plan” to protect your children. The best family safety plans include

Looking for something fun to do?

A DV E R T I S I N G

background checks on all teachers, security cameras inevery room, office staff being present during every lesson with the teachers, large observation glass on the doors and an open door policy for parents if they want to sit in. Don’t be shy about finding out if the music academy you are calling has actually thought this through and has a plan in place.

Ask the music academy what they do to inspire student achievement and if there are any fees associated with student awards. Student achievement tests (similar to karate tests) can significantly inspire your child to be excited about and want to succeed at music. Many local karate studios will charge as much as $50 per belt test. Do your due diligence, and if the school offers a student achievement system with trophies, ask if there are any costs to the parent.

Ask if there are any recital fees. Having your child in a recital is one of the best ways to find out if they’re really progressing. All parents really just want to know how their child is doing. Music recitals twice a year are a great way to see if music is right for your child. Many schools charge parents “participation” or “showcase” fees for their child to perform. Look for a music academy that does not charge these fees, as they can really add up, especially if you have more than one child.

Do they have an office staff or an answering machine? As a customer, when you have a question or a need, you need to talk to someone and fast. Many music academies are small operations with call centers or answering machines. But the ideal situation is to find an academy that has full time administration. Not only can they answer your questions immediately and get you what you need, but they can be a great resource for support and further information as you embark on your musical journey. You’ll never know until you try! Look for a school that offers month-tomonth lessons versus semesters so you’re not over committed, and dive in!

Ask if they sell music supplies and if there are any student discounts. It’s a major convenience if the music school sells books, strings, etc. on site so you don’t have to travel to another place to get what you need. If they do offer music supplies on site, ask if they have a student discount program.

How to Choose a Power Equipment Dealer

S

ince 1944, Mann Tool and Supply, a local, family owned and operated business, has been specializing in power tool and accessory sales. Mann Tool offers a full line from many major name-brand power tool and woodworking equipment manufacturers. To complement their tool and equipment selection, Mann offers woodworking and construction supplies, lumber and other wood products, plus classes and demos in woodworking and wood turning. Below are some tips on how to select the right tool for the job. Whether you need durable power tools for a professional job or you want the best house on the block, it pays to find a quality power equipment dealer – like Mann Tools – in your area. A good power equipment dealer will make a difference in the life and longevity of your power tools.

PRODUCT LINE Brands and product lines will usually determine the quality of the power equipment dealer. Some brands have better reputations than others. Your friends, family and coworkers can guide you toward quality brands. Ask them which product lines are the best. Remember that is better to pay more for equipment that lasts rather than go through the hassle of replacing cheap tools every year. Some brands have product lines that are engineered to different standards. A good dealer will explain differences in

MANNTOOL

AND SUPPLY, INC

manufacturing, materials and which ones have the fewest problems after the sale. Also, consider getting a recommendation from other people who use tools professionally. People who use tools all day, every day will have thoughts about the advantages of certain brands. Pay attention to what’s labeled “commercial” or “professional” grade. These models typically come with longer warranties. They are usually built for use over long periods of time and under tough conditions. But they also have downsides, such as cost. Commercial or professional grade equipment may be heavier than standard models. If you want a longlasting tool, though, they are hard to beat.

KNOWLEDGE The best power equipment dealers have in-depth knowledge about their products. Find a store with employees and owners who understand every last detail about what they sell. They should be able to demonstrate the features of the equipment, explain how it works, inform you about warranty coverage, and offer advice on which accessories have the best value. They will also educate you

A DV E R T I S I N G

on how to make your equipment last for many years. Salespeople should be informative, not pushy. They will help you find the right product to match your needs, even if it’s a more affordable model. They know that is the best way to get repeat customers. In fact, that’s another sign that you’re dealing with a reputable retailer. If they’ve been in business for a long time, it’s usually for a good reason. Look for power equipment dealers who have a solid track record.

SERVICE All quality power equipment needs maintenance over time. Ask about what kind of services the store offers after the sale. Many equipment dealers offer repair services on site. If not, they should refer you to professionals who will do the job right, and for a good price. Be sure to inquire about how much maintenance and parts will cost. The best power equipment dealers are partners who will help you get the job done right for many years to come. They will help you save money and time.

How To Recycle

T

he average person generates more than four pounds of garbage every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. While you could just throw everything away, recycling can make a big impact in Columbia. Recycling helps save natural resources, conserves water and energy and saves landfill space. In Columbia, people can recycle items like plastic bottles, aluminum cans, magazines, newspaper, steel cans, cartons, cardboard and glass. Residents of the Columbia area can now recycle more with the 95-gallon roll carts that Columbia, Richland County and Lexington County offer for the residential curbside programs. The carts help make recycling easier by being able to throw all the recycling into one container. It is great not having to sort everything anymore. However, contamination is a big problem when it comes to recycling! Contamination means that there is more than just recycling in those carts. Contamination includes non-recyclable items, food

waste, yard waste, biohazardous material and plastic bags. Contaminates can break machines at the recycling facility and workers still hand sort some material. Here are some easy steps for good, clean recycling:

Flatten Flattening cardboard boxes, from your Amazon packages to your tissue boxes, can help save space in your cart and the collection truck. Plus, when material gets to the recycling facility, everything is sorted by shape first. Boxes could get

A DV E R T I S I N G

mixed in with aluminum cans or rigid plastics, like laundry detergent bottles. Flattened cans and bottles will get mixed in with the paper and cardboard. Keep those cans and bottles in their true shape and flatten boxes.

Rinse and replace Garbage is stinky, recycling is not. Recycling should be visibly clean of any liquids or food waste. Empty out that little bit of leftover soda in the can before recycling. Give a quick rinse to yogurt containers before recycling. Replace plastic caps on plastic bottles. Peanut butter jars can be tough. Run it in the dishwasher or let Rover lick it clean.

Keep out The recycling facility sees a lot of material that is not recyclable, which is called contamination. Keep out any garbage, food, yard waste, plastic bags, diapers, needles, garden hoses and more. The list goes on, but you can visit http://recyclemoresc.org to learn about the Dirty Dozen of Recycling.

mean it’s accepted in your curbside cart. Items like plastic bags, plastic wrap and Styrofoam are recyclable at most local grocery stores. There are containers outside the front door that you can drop off plastic bags and empty egg cartons. Electronics are banned from the landfill and need to be recycled properly. The City of Columbia and Richland County operate drop off sites for e-waste. Check online for locations and hours. Wondering how to remember the city’s collection schedule? There’s an app for that! The “Columbia, SC Solid Waste” app is for free on Androids and iPhones. Don’t have a smartphone? Visit www.columbiasc.net and print a calendar or sign up for different notifications like text, email, tweet or phone call. Looking for more information on what to recycle? Visit the Waste Wizard section of the app or website and find all sorts of information. How to Choose a Roofing Contractor

A

during regular business hours. Your initial contact with the contractor should be friendly, professional and helpful. Describe your needs with as much detail as possible in order for them to assign and send out the proper employee to address those needs. The more information you can provide upfront, the better. The roofing contractor should be flexible in setting up an appointment for your convenience.

re the shingles over your home or business damaged, discolored or even missing? Are you experiencing leaks in one or multiple rooms?

What may seem like a harmless drip during a rainstorm may just be the beginning of your problems. So, what do you do and how do you know if your roof needs to be replaced or repaired? Do you hire a handyman or a roofer? Choosing a roofing contractor shouldn’t be a crap shoot. Below, you’ll find a guideline to help you choose the right roofing contractor for you.

Start your search online. With just a few clicks, you should be able to find a variety local roofing contractors to choose from. Once you’ve found a few roofers that interest you, check to make sure they’ve got a functional website that provides up-todate contact information, a local address, multiple certifications, testimonials and

more. Websites like the BBB can provide valuable information like accreditation validation, customer reviews, up-to-date information, unresolved issues and overall customer relations. Also check to see if the contractor is a licensed general contractor. This comes in handy as many other related construction services are needed outside of roofing, e.g. drywall repair, wood replacement, siding, gutters, etc. Social media is also a popular place for contractors to gain exposure. If a social media presence is important to you, feel free to check there as well.

Making contact with any contractor should always be easy, via phone or by email. You should be able to inquire more information by placing a call to their office

Upon arrival, make sure the representative is on time, clean and friendly. If you feel inclined to ask for identification, contractor verification, local licenses and/or certifications, the representative should have no problem presenting these documents. Make sure their licenses and certifications are up-to-date and correspond with local municipalities. Allow the roofer to perform his or her duties in inspecting and measuring your roof. If interior damage is present, allow the contractor to view the damage, be it an interior room or attic space. This is vital in assisting them with their overall inspection.

Once complete, the representative should be able to clearly diagnose the

A DV E R T I S I N G

ody art, that centuries-old practice of using ink to decorate your skin, has been growing in popularity in recent years.

In fact, it’s become so popular that it’s now considered mainstream for the younger generations. It’s no longer a sign of rebellion or counterculture so much as a powerful means for people to express themselves artistically. That growth in popularity means there are more choices than ever for where you can get a tattoo. Here are some things to keep in mind when picking a tattoo studio.

CLEANLINESS The most obvious thing you need to look for is whether the studio is clean, and you can tell a lot about that just by looking around. See if the studio looks sanitary and well-organized. Any furniture in the

tattoo area that comes into direct contact with a client being tattooed should have a disposable cover that is changed between each client visit. The tattoo artist should use a clean needle for every customer, too. To be certain, you can ask them to open the needle in front of you before using it.

Every state has different rules and regulations for tattoo studios, and you need to do your homework to find out what those regulations are where you live. Believe it or not, there are some studios that will open up without a license and without doing the proper training to ensure a sanitary environment. Check whether the studio has the proper license and ask about any training the tattoo artist has gone through to do their job in a sterile, safe way.

CREATIVITY

The best tattoo artists are exactly that — real artists — and can take your idea and turn it into a gorgeous piece of body art that you can enjoy for the rest of your life.

Once you’ve ensured the studio is safe and licensed, then comes the fun part: choosing a tattoo design. There can be a wide variation in talent between different studios and even different artists working within the same studio. Check out the portfolios in the studio to see what kind of designs you can expect and make sure it’s up to your expectations.

PRICE It’s not a good idea to pick the cheapest tattoo studio. Like with anything else in life, you get what you pay for, and low-cost studios are bound to be cutting corners somewhere. Whether by employing low-time, low-talent artists or skimping on sanitation steps, you just don’t want to use a studio that’s known for being the cheapest in town. Ultimately, because tattoos are designed to be permanent, you want to pick the best artist you can find — even if it’s expensive. They should run their business in a clean, sterile way — almost with the cleanliness of a surgeon — but also have true artistic talent. That’s a rare combination to find, but it’s worth it to do your research and shop around until you find it.you they are authentic. Additionally, many dealers offer their regular clients better deals than they do to infrequent shoppers.

hen you take your pet to his doctor regularly, you can catch an illness in its beginning stages. As you know, catching a disease early can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. Most people think of their pets as members of their family. In fact, some people even refer to them as fur children. That’s why finding a veterinarian or veterinary clinic is so important. You need to find qualified care to ensure the longterm health of your pet. But in a difficult economy, pet care might get overlooked. Routine care might even seem unnecessary. After all, do humans skip medical and dental checkups if they seem like they’re in good shape? Unfortunately, pets age faster than human beings. Their bodies and internal systems can change rapidly, sometimes in a matter of a few months.

Routine veterinary care will help your pet to live a longer and happy life. Choosing a good veterinarian that suits you and your pet can seem like a difficult task. If you follow these guidelines, you should be able to find a professional that will give your pet the best care possible.

Ask for Referrals Your family and friends may know a good veterinarian. Listen to their experiences with a critical ear. You need to find someone who is professional, compassionate and timely. Ask specific questions, such as whether the clinic staff likes animals. Do they respond to concerns in a timely manner?

Research veterinary and veterinarian clinics on the Internet. Make a list of prospective candidates, then check with the Better Business Bureau in your state to see if there have been any complaints against these professionals. How were the complaints resolved? Some people need extra services, such as daycare, boarding facilities and pet training. You may also need to have your pet groomed. Find out if the prospective veterinary clinic provides these services.

After making a list of choices, visit the veterinary office or clinic. Call ahead and request a tour of facilities. The staff should have the time to answer your questions. You should see a clean and wellmaintained office. Observe how the staff interacts with clients and pets. Are they warm toward the animals and owners? The employees should have an affinity for animals. Sit in the waiting area and introduce yourself to other clients. Find out if they are happy with the services and staff. Also, inquire about prices to verify it is within your budget. If you feel uncomfortable during your visit, consider taking your services elsewhere. Finding the best vet for you and your pet will take time and research. You should put the same effort into finding a doctor for your animal as you would in finding one for yourself. The bottom line is that your pet’s health is a cooperative undertaking between you and your veterinarian. Finding the perfect vet for you and your furry, scaly or feathered friend will ensure your pet is with you for years to come.
